[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct 29th + Daily Enc. Oct 30th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's all live out our lives, to the very last moment,
dedicating ourselves to achieving kosen-rufu
and to practicing this faith.
Cheerfully and enthusiastically,
let's continue to advance forever!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do
not harbour doubts in our hearts, we
will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood. Do not have doubts simply
because heaven does not lend you protection. Do not be discouraged because
you do not enjoy an easy and secure existence in this life."

283) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, October 29th, 2008

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin writes: 'It is the power of the Buddhist Law that enables the
deities of the sun and moon to make their rounds of the four continents'
(WND-1, 685). The entire universe moves in accord with the fundamental
rhythm of the Mystic Law. By vibrantly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as we
keep moving forwards and striving to surmount all hardships and problems
that come our way, our lives fall in sync with the ultimate law of the
universe.

"Just after being released from my unjust arrest in Osaka in 1957, I sent a
letter to the members in Kansai, in which I wrote: 'Let's pledge to press
ahead undaunted by any difficulty or setback. Life is a struggle to the very
end.'

"Our times are growing more troubled day by day. Losing courage will only
leave one at the mercy of ever-changing circumstances."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct. 28th + Daily Enc. Oct 29th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"The lion king is said to advance three steps, then gather
himself to spring, (unleashing the same power whether he
traps a tiny ant or attacks a fierce animal.)"*
Our own personal advancement, small or large,
has a very serious effect on the achievement of kosen-rufu.
By taking on any and every single challenge that confronts us,
giving it always our best shot,
let's all live out our lives victoriously and successfully!

*"Reply to Kyo'o" - WND-I, page 412

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"If in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of
millions
of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three
Buddha bodies with which we are eternally endowed. Nam-myoho-renge-
kyo is
just such a 'diligent' practise."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In 'On Persecutions Befalling the Sage,' Nichiren Daishonin
encourages his
disciples, who were struggling amid the Atsuhara Persecution, not to
be
defeated by fear or terror in the face of the three obstacles and four
devils. He urges them to be courageous in faith; otherwise, their
lives will
continue to be dominated by a state of Animality resembling that of 'a
pheasant sighted by a hawk, or a mouse stalked by a cat' (WND-1, 998).

"The members of the Soka Gakkai, however, are a dauntless gathering of
Buddhas. Uniting firmly with their mentor, they summon forth the
courage of
lion kings and forge ahead toward kosen-rufu. Not even the threats of
the
three powerful enemies can faze them."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct 27th + Words of the Week Oct 27th - Nov. 2nd

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and
"Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and
more.

Monday, October 27th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin states,
"To have faith like water means to believe continuously
without ever regressing."*
It's in our day to day lives that the main arena for us to promote
the advancement of kosen-rufu exists.
Those who unceasingly continue to make an effort,
no matter whether their dedication is recognised or not,
are the true heroes and heroines.

*"Today, there are people who have faith in the Lotus Sutra. The belief of
some is like fire while that of
others is like water. When the former listen to the teachings, their passion
flares up like fire, but as time
goes on, they tend to discard their faith. To have faith like water means to
believe continuously without ever
regressing." - "The Two Kinds of Faith", WND-I, page 899

Monday, October 27th, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"This is what the sutra means when it says, 'You should rise and greet him
from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha.' You should
respect one another as Shakyamuni and Many Treasures did at the ceremony in
the 'Treasure Tower' chapter."

(The Fourteen Slanders - The Writings of Nichiren
Daishonin, Vol.1, page 757) Selection source: "Kyo no
Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, October 27th, 2008

October 27th-November 2nd, 2008
---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
What kind of results we will achieve in the future is
determined by what causes we are making right now.*
Let's take action now.
Let's plant the seeds (for a successful future) now.
This is the strategy for victory.

*"If you want to understand the causes that existed in the past, look at the
results as they are manifested in the present. And if you want to understand
what results will be manifested in the future, look at the causes that exist
in the present."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct 26th + Daily Enc. Oct 27th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, October 26th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It is 'our powerful enemies' that actually assist us in
strengthening ourselves.*
Let's courageously head right towards where things are
seemingly hard and difficult for us to deal with.
Chanting daimoku with strong determined resolve,
let's take on whatever challenges there are and open up
the path to glory!

*"Devadatta was the foremost good friend to the Thus Come
One Shakyamuni. In this age as well, it is not one's
allies but one's powerful enemies who assist one's
progress. We find examples before our very eyes. The
Hojo clan in Kamakura could not have firmly established
itself as the ruler of Japan had it not been for the
challenges posed by Yoshimori and the Retired Emperor of
Oki. In this sense these men were the best allies the
ruling clan could have. For me, Nichiren, my best allies
in attaining Buddhahood are Kagenobu, the priests Ryokan,
Doryu, and Doamidabutsu, and Hei no Saemon and the lord of
Sagami. I am grateful when I think that without them I
could not have proved myself to be the votary of the Lotus
Sutra." - "The Actions of the Votary of the Lotus Sutra",
WND-I, page 770

"My mentor Josei Toda explained the importance of courage in a way that was
easy for all to understand: 'We ordinary mortals may find it difficult to be
compassionate. But we can substitute courage for compassion--the courage to
help others, to do our human revolution, to advance kosen-rufu in Japan and
around the world. That courage itself is equivalent to compassion.' Courage
is the key to achieving any goal. No one can take our courage away from us."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
In those groups, districts, etc. that are successfully
developing and growing,
you'll always find that it is clear, and specific, what each member is
responsible for and what everyone's targets are.
It is vital that our leaders take the initiative at the
very forefront of our activities and show a good example
of how we can dedicate our efforts towards expanding our movement.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The mystic principle of the true aspect of reality is
one, but if it encounters evil influences, it will
manifest delusion, while if it encounters good influences,
it will manifest enlightenment. Enlightenment means
enlightenment to the essential nature of phenomena, and
delusion, ignorance of it."

celebrity! What matters is how you are as a human being, and what you've

or titles that matter. Truly admirable are those who dedicate themselves to
helping others."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct 25th + Daily Enc. Oct 26th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, October 25th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
In those groups, districts, etc. that are successfully
developing and growing,
you'll always find that it is clear, and specific, what each member is
responsible for and what everyone's targets are.
It is vital that our leaders take the initiative at the
very forefront of our activities and show a good example
of how we can dedicate our efforts towards expanding our movement.

"I'm reminded of something Mr. Toda said: 'Who cares about social status or
celebrity! What matters is how you are as a human being, and what you've
done for others.' I agree completely. It isn't one's educational background
or titles that matter. Truly admirable are those who dedicate themselves to
helping others."

The Daishonin encourages us,
"Each and every one of you should be certain deep in your
heart (that sacrificing your life for the Lotus Sutra is
like exchanging rocks for gold or dung for rice)."*
Especially when the crucial moment comes,
let's summon up all our courage and resolutely challenge ourselves
to overcome any situation,
for the sake of achieving kosen-rufu
and for the sake of our own lives!

"The section from the 'Expedient Means' (2nd) chapter of the Lotus Sutra
that we recite during gongyo each morning and evening includes the phrase
'exerting oneself bravely and vigorously' (cf. LS2, 23). Shakyamuni uses
this phrase in describing his practise in past lives to his disciple
Shariputra. Later, in the 'Emergence of the Treasure Tower' (11th) chapter,
Shakyamuni declares that all Buddhas will praise those who uphold and
propagate the Lotus Sutra with 'valour' and 'diligence' amid great hardships
in future ages after his passing (cf. LS11, 180-81).

"Exerting oneself bravely and vigorously--with valour and diligence--is the
essence of Buddhist practise and the hallmark of the shared commitment of
teacher and disciple."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
This Buddhism is the Buddhism of 'True Cause'*.
"I'm going to advance even more, from now!"
"Right, from this moment, I'm going to start afresh!"
Always renewing our resolve with such spirited fresh determination,
let's all develop a great future!

*Regarding the spirit of true cause, SGI President Ikeda
said in a dialogue with young people, "The past is the
past and the future is the future. You should keep moving
forward with a steady eye on the future, telling yourself,
"I'll start from today!' 'I'll start afresh from now, from
this moment!' This is the essence of Nichiren Daishonin's
Buddhism of True Cause, the spirit of starting from the
present moment. This is the heart of our daimoku" (World
Tribune, November 1, 1996, p.11).

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct 21st + Daily Enc. Oct 22nd

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Buddhism concerns itself with victory or defeat.
Those who emerge victorious (from challenging adversities)
will certainly accumulate great benefit and good fortune for all eternity.
Courageously putting our faith into action,
let's stand up on our own two feet.
And by carefully making sure to have ironclad unity between us all,
let's be absolutely victorious!

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"A hundred years of practise in the Land of Perfect Bliss cannot compare to
the benefit gained from one day's practise in the impure world."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Expressions of gratitude can be looked upon as evidence of a person's way
of life and philosophy. Those who do not allow themselves to become
self-centred, who realise that every positive accomplishment is in part due
to the support of others, naturally feel gratitude for the assistance they
have received. In contrast, self-centred people who take the efforts of
others for granted do not feel appreciative. They're always filled with
complaints and dissatisfaction.

"Friendship is deepened by feeling grateful for another's support,
expressing that feeling to others, and trying to reciprocate that support in
some way."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Our dear young people,
we count on you, through the power of your youth,
to make a revolutionary change to our society.
What will create history is our sincere, honest and
earnest voices that move and inspire people's hearts.

your body moves. When a strong wind blows, the grass and trees can no longer
remain still; when the earth shakes, the seas are atremble. Thus if one can
move Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, can the grass and trees fail
to respond, can the waters remain calm?"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct 18th + Daily Enc. Oct 19th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, October 18th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
We are practising the principle of Buddhism,
"substituting faith for wisdom."*
Let's therefore chant daimoku faithfully and earnestly!
Then immeasurably profound wisdom will definitely well forth
from within.
Today also, with unshakable faith and confidence,
let's advance courageously and dynamically!

*President Toda explained the meaning of the line "his
intention is difficult to understand" as it applies to our
practise:

Whereas the Buddha sees what is to come, for us the future
is totally dark, and we can only see what has already
passed. For this reason, it is difficult for us to awaken
to the heart of the Gohonzon. It is enough that we
believe wholeheartedly in the Gohonzon, no matter what.
If we do so, then we will definitely receive benefit. It
is no good if we start doubting along the way.

He is discussing the ultimate meaning of faith. Firm
faith in the Gohonzon leads to the highest "wisdom." This
is the principle of "substituting faith for wisdom."

"Education will decide the future of humankind. Only education enables us to
live properly, in a fully human way. Without sound education, evil will run
rampant, the law of the jungle will prevail, and our society will become
shallow and superficial, its values skewed by the pursuit of empty fame and
popularity. This will lead to turmoil, suffering, and deadlock. In every
age, sound education is absolutely crucial for the sake of society, the
world, and people's happiness. Education is the springboard to happiness, to
justice, and to peace.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Living as we do in the evil age of the Latter Day of the Law*,
it is essential that we advance boldly and with strong conviction.
Regardless of what kind of situation we might be in right now,
it is important that we firmly determine that "We will definitely win!"
Let's be courageous champions who never cease to advance,

*Buddhism calls our present age the Latter Day of the Law.
It is a period described in the sutras as an evil age
defiled by the five impurities, in which people's lives
are muddied, and their confusion of thought is extreme.

"The German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) wrote this line that
was his creed later in life: 'Out of suffering, joy.' These are very
inspiring words. Everyone has problems. The important thing is not to allow
problems to defeat us, but to use them instead as a springboard to help us
forge a more expansive life-state.

"The Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin teaches the principles that the
sufferings of birth and death are none other than nirvana and that earthly
desires are none other than enlightenment. Precisely because we experience
sufferings, we can bring forth the life-state of Buddhahood."

let's make today a day of victory!

**Therefore, each day we return to the point of departure at life's
wellspring, and from there we begin to advance anew. Doing gongyo and
chanting daimoku is the secret teaching for returning to the world of kuon
ganjo. Every day, we set forth from kuon ganjo. Faith to continually set
forth from this eternal prime point is faith of the Buddhism of the true
cause. (Lectures on the "Expedient Means" and "Life Span" Chapters of the

feelings of pity and compassion. Since we are taught that
the Buddha mind is a mind of great pity and compassion, a
bow of obeisance is made in acknowledgement of this pity
and compassion."

Taking the very best of care not to be involved in any type of accident or
incident
is the key stone to victory and success.
Through chanting daimoku with the strong determination to
never let any type of accident occur in our activities

kinds of accident from occurring,

"Since my youth, I have engraved in my heart countless meaningful passages
that I have come across in my readings. I have deepened my real-life
learning by earnestly pondering works of literature and world events. It is
important to read good books and learn from wise and insightful individuals.
Such efforts are vital if we are to truly fulfil our mission amid the often
harsh realities of society.

"The Japanese novelist Shugoro Yamamoto (pen name of Satomu Shimizu,
1903-67) wrote: 'A battle is a living thing, and victory or defeat is not
known until the decisive moment. Being confident of victory is what decides
victory. Those who are convinced they will triumph, do.' In the old days,
everyone memorized famous passages like this that offer important lessons,
even political leaders and educators would cite them."
