-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Thinking that we can do things just as we have always done is
not going to create anything great other than another habit!
By totally changing our way of thinking and doing things
let's approach each activity carefully and considerately,
and open up a whole new future.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Or again we may say that our head corresponds to myo, our throat to ho, our
chest to ren, our stomach to ge, and our legs to kyo. Hence this five-foot
body of ours constitutes the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo."

Teachings, page 28) Selection source: Soka

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Those who have strong faith and conviction are always
cheerful and positive no matter what kind of situation
they are in.
Let's remember to express how much we respect and how grateful we are to
our mothers, who dispel our fears and bolster our confidence
with the strength of their wonderful smiles.

"A single character of the Lotus Sutra is like the great earth, which gives
rise to all things. A single character is like the great ocean, which
contains the water from all rivers. A single character is like the sun and
moon, which illuminates all four continents."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"There is no Buddhist organisation comparable to ours in all the world, none
with a network so vast and far-reaching and so dedicated to spreading the
light of peace, culture, and education for the happiness of all humankind.
Many leading figures around the globe are observing the activities of the
SGI with the highest hopes. All of you have a much bigger mission than you
think. We have entered an amazing age.

"I was able to build the Soka Gakkai into the organisation it is today
because I devoted myself to its construction with unceasing effort and
selfless resolve, braving every storm along the way. I hope that our younger
members will not take for granted the fortunate circumstances our
organisation enjoys today.

"Please do not become foolish people who are arrogant and self-conceited or
who are lazy and remiss, leaving all the hard work to others."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb 25th + Daily Enc. Feb 26th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo
Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let us always exert ourselves to advance one more step,
going forwards even if only by half a step!
Those who challenge everything with a strong seeking spirit*
are indeed the ultimate victors in life!**

*A seeking spirit gives rise to courage and strength, and it is advancing
with a seeking spirit that enables us to grow as human beings. (The New
Human Revolution, Vol. 20, Chap. 1, Path of Friendship 54)

*"The Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) said: 'Those who live life in
perfection look only forwards, those who have stopped moving forwards look
back on their achievements.' Moving forwards--this is what all of you are
doing. Those who keep pressing ahead for their own growth, for the happiness
of their friends, and for the development of kosen-rufu are the most
praiseworthy; they are the ultimate victors in life. If, on the other hand,
we become arrogant and self-satisfied, thinking that we've already done
enough and can just sit back and relax, we begin to stop growing. Not
advancing is regressing. (19th Soka Gakkai Headquarters Leaders meeting -
June 18th, 2008)

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Believe in this mandala with all your heart. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like
the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Buddhism also teaches about gratitude. In Buddhism, gratitude is not
something that reinforces society's hierarchical relationships. Rather,
Buddhism speaks of gratitude for all living beings, advocating a philosophy
of being open to society, accepting others, and cultivating a spirit of
mutual trust.

"Shin'ichi Yamamoto asked Konosuke Matsushita* about his view of gratitude.
Matsushita placed great importance on this virtue, saying that gratitude and
appreciation were the foundation for his faith and life, and also among his
fundamental business principles to share with his employees. 'The spirit of
gratitude,' he wrote, 'imparts immeasurable joy and vitality to our hearts,
and as long as we have a keen sense of it, it serves as a wellspring that
enables us to overcome every form of adversity and welcome true happiness
into our lives. Gratitude enriches our lives to an incomparable degree.'"

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
When we face something that we feel rather reluctant to deal with,
let's tackle that problem first and foremost.
It's through confronting what seems to be so difficult
and achieving victory that we
gain even more trust and respect from others.

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

ultimately aspire to is the Buddhaland."

---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
By believing and practising the Mystic Law,
we can definitely change poison into medicine.*
Although some of us might be facing a great struggle in
weathering the economic storm right now,
let's never give up, no matter what!
The inner strength of your Buddha nature is absolutely
infinite.

* Changing Poison into
Medicine-http://www.sgi.org/changing poison.html

**When we believe in the fundamental Mystic Law, it
becomes manifest within us, and our state of life changes
at the very core. The karmic relations arising from
ignorance are eradicated, with the Mystic Law enriching
our lives and overflowing into our environment. The world
is transformed at the fundamental level. This is the
basis of the benefit of the Gohonzon. (The World of
Nichiren Daishonin's Writings, Vol. 2, page 179)

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb 21st + Daily Enc. Feb 22nd

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, February 21st, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Enthusiastically and in cheerful spirits,
let's live out our lives to the fullest.
It is on the noble path of achieving kosen-rufu and justice,
that we can perform the great drama of our
own human revolution.

Saturday, February 21st, 2009
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"When someone reported to me, however, that you had been
taken with this illness, day and night, morning and
evening I addressed the Lotus Sutra on the matter, morning
and evening I implored the gods of the blue heavens. And
now today I have received word that you have recovered
from illness. Could any tidings be more joyful than
these?"

""...one of the titles of the Buddha is 'One Who Can Endure.' With the great
power of endurance, build a life as indestructible and imperishable as a
diamond.

''Don't be defeated!'
'Resolutely take the lead!'--
my mentor's voice
still resonates powerfully
in the depths of my being.

"My mentor Josei Toda rousingly encouraged a suffering friend, saying:

"All people face periods of despair. But if we endure such times and ride
them through, then all those problems and worries will later come to seem
small and insignificant. Nothing can obstruct the tremendous power of the
Mystic Law. If you rise up boldly in the face of devilish functions with the
firm resolve to battle them head-on and win, they'll beat a hasty retreat.
No matter what happens, just keep sending them flying!"

of Daibyakurenge, translated Feb.17th 2009

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The solidarity of the SGI will forever grow with joy
and happiness based on our perfect unity in faith.
Courageously and with great enthusiasm,
let's gather all the unique strengths and talents that we each possess
for the sake of realising the great ideal of achieving kosen-rufu!

* "The Daishonin uses the term 'many in boy but one in mind' to express
unity in which the individuality of each person is valued and given full
play."

"The ideal organisation is one in which many different people are united by
the same spirit. And with this spirit as their foundation, they engage in
activities as a diverse group."

"The Soka Gakkai is neither held together by economic interest nor
controlled by power. It is the embodiment of the essence of humanity united
by the great ideal of realising the widespread propagation of the
Daishonin's Buddhism, a teaching that brings the potential of the individual
to shine. It is the crystallisation of profound heart-to-heart bond of
trust."

"Nichiren Daishonin says, 'When both oneself and others have wisdom and
compassion, this is called joy.' (Gosho
Zenshu, pg 761)"

Writings, Vol. 1, p.134-156)

"Making one's way through life actively avoiding hard work and tough
challenges will produce nothing of true lasting value. Young people, in
particular, need to throw themselves into their chosen task, roll up their

indomitable, invincible spirit is the highest honour a youth can earn."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb 19th + Daily Enc. Feb 20th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, February 19th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
A person of true faith is someone who makes an unceasing effort
to improve him or herself.
Day by day and month after month,
let's continually challenge our weaknesses and win!
That is how we will be crowned with happiness.

* "Strengthen your faith day by day and month after month. Should you
slacken in your resolve even a bit, devils will take advantage."
- "On Persecutions Befalling the Sage", WND-I, page 997

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Consider this: if one cannot cross a moat ten feet wide,
can one cross a moat that is twenty or thirty feet wide?
If you cannot bring about rainfall, which is easy, how can
you attain rebirth in the pure land and achieve Buddhahood, which is
difficult?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In Buddhism, the world we live in is called the 'saha world.' 'Saha' means
'endurance.' We all struggle with various problems and difficulties that
press in upon us. What is crucial is whether we can endure and triumph over
them. Life is a struggle for which we need an invincible spirit.

"Nichiren Daishonin, too, placed utmost importance on an invincible spirit.
Indeed, we can see this spirit burning brightly throughout his writings.

"In 'On Prolonging One's Life Span,' he says in praise of his loyal disciple
Shijo Kingo, an exemplary predecessor of our men's division members: 'He is
a man who never gives in to defeat and who greatly values his friends'
(WND-1, 955).

"The Buddha is known
as 'One Who Can Endure.'
Our perseverance then
is clear proof that we are
Bodhisattvas of the Earth."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
History is made in small gatherings!
It is important that we value the presence of each participant,
rising and greeting them from afar and showing them the same respect we
would a Buddha.*
Warmly welcoming and sincerely applauding members,
(for the efforts they made to be able to come or contribute to a meeting,)
let us create waves of appreciation and joy!

* "The Fourteen Slanders", WND-1, Page 757, "Even an ignorant person can
obtain blessings by serving someone who expounds the Lotus Sutra. No matter
if he is a demon or an animal, if someone proclaims even a single verse or
phrase of the Lotus Sutra, you must respect him as you would the Buddha.
This is what the sutra means when it says, "You should rise and greet him
from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha."You should
respect one another as Shakyamuni and Many Treasures did at the ceremony in
the "Treasure Tower" chapter."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"

Sunday, February 15th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The inner strength of our Buddha nature is infinite.
With such conviction and confidence,
let's be courageous in our faith!
That is how we will most definitely be victorious!

* In chanting daimoku, the first important thing is having the challenging
spirit to act with courage. This could be described as arousing deep faith
from the innermost reaches of our life in accord with the Daishonin's words,
firmly believing that we can summon forth the mystic truth within us,
manifest our inherent Buddhahood, and attain enlightenment in this lifetime
without fail. It also means directly taking on the three obstacles and four
devils that seek to obstruct us from chanting daimoku. We need to have a
fearless, tireless, and unremitting challenging spirit to confront and
overcome the diverse array of obstacles that rise up to assail us.

ways in which it [the pressing task at hand] can be helped, but it can never
be helped merely by talking about it. We must act, and act quickly." Swift
action is always critical."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb 14th + Daily Enc. Feb 15th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, February 14th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"Winter always turns to spring."*
It is in the midst of persevering in our struggles,
in the face of adversity,
that the causes for victory and success are made.
Let's each win on our own respective stages of life
and open up the way to a springtime filled with happiness and good fortune.

*"Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter, but winter
always turns to spring."
- "Winter Always Turns to Spring", WND-I, page 536

**Winter can function to awaken inherent power and latent potential--this
principle applies to both life and Buddhist practice. All living beings
possess the seed of Buddhahood, otherwise known as the Buddha nature. This
seed contains potential as vast and boundless as the universe itself. It is
awakened from dormancy and brought to fruition by faith in the Lotus Sutra,
which enables us to surmount the trials of winter. In other words, it is
achieved through our struggles against the obstacles that arise in the
course of our Buddhist practice--namely, against the three obstacles and
four devils, and the three powerful enemies. We can bring brilliant flowers
of victory to bloom in our lives when we weather the hardships of winter and
emerge triumphant based on our practice of the Mystic Law.

believer, and a good teaching--before prayers can be

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The French author Victor Hugo (1802-85) declared: 'Isolated forces cancel
each other out.' Working together in unity is very important. For the
continued success of our movement, we need to keep building a solid alliance
for truth and justice.

"Religion is often seen as being self-righteous and isolating. However, the
Daishonin writes: 'What does Bodhisattva Never Disparaging's profound
respect for people signify? The purpose of the appearance in this world of
Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, lies in his behaviour as a human
being' (WND-1, 852). Buddhism seeks to enable all people to behave with the
utmost humanity.

"As our practice and understanding of the principles of Buddhism deepen, we
develop the ability to transcend all differences and open our hearts to
anyone, helping them form a connection with Buddhism. We are able to forge
warm bonds of friendship with those we meet and interact with them
sincerely. This leads to the expansion of a network of good people and the
creation of the values of peace, culture, and education. This is the
humanistic path of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. The SGI is a great
alliance for peace bringing people together everywhere."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb 12th + Daily Enc. Feb 13th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, February 12th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The SGI is the world's leading religious community
of courageous lion kings.
Let's talk with pride and confidence about what we believe
is true and righteous for world peace and people's happiness.
Let's create a tidal wave of 'courageous dialogue' among
people all around the world.

* "From the standpoint of the Mystic Law, everyone is equal. And for
individuals and the nation to achieve prosperity and happiness, there is no
other way but to make the True Law our foundation. To achieve this, it is
our mission to accomplish kosen-rufu without fail.'"

"The Soka Gakkai is the king of the religious world. We are afraid of
nothing. Never forget that you are heirs to this legacy. I want you to fight
and advance bravely, as valiant young warriors, in the proud battle to
spread the Law."
(The Human Revolution, Volume 12, "Successors" chapter)

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Regard your service to your lord as the practice of the Lotus Sutra. This
is what is meant by 'No worldly affairs of life or work are ever contrary to
the true reality.'"

Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, February 12th, 2009

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"A Buddhist text states: 'As practice progresses and understanding grows,
the three obstacles and four devils emerge in confusing form, vying with one
another to interfere...One should be neither influenced nor frightened by
them' (WND-1, 501). Devilish forces arise in the most troublesome and
confusing of forms, but if we can see them for what they are, we can defeat
them. If we courageously face them head-on, they will retreat. Then we can
experience a bright, clear, expansive life-state resembling the blue skies
after a storm.

"One of my favourite Brazilian sayings goes to the effect: 'The greatest
trials inspire the greatest courage."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb. 11th + Daily Enc. Feb 12th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
My dear friends of the youth division:
develop your expertise and become first rate in something!
If you really consider yourself to be a true disciple,
then it is important to be passionate and earnest in all of your endeavours,
pursuing them with the ferocity of an advancing lion*,
and ensuring a succession of victories that people will know and remember
you by.**

* "Reply to Kyo'o", WND-1, Page 412, "The lion king is said to advance three
steps, then gather himself to spring, unleashing the same power whether he
traps a tiny ant or attacks a fierce animal. In inscribing this Gohonzon for
her protection, Nichiren was like the lion king. This is what the sutra
means by "the power [of the Buddhas] that has the lion's ferocity.""

** "Earthly Desires are Enlightenment", WND-1, Page 31, "Carry through with
your faith in the Lotus Sutra. You cannot strike fire from flint if you stop
halfway. Bring forth the great power of faith, and be spoken of by all the
people of Kamakura, both high and low, or by all the people of Japan, as
"Shijo Kingo, Shijo Kingo of the Lotus school!" Even a bad reputation will
spread far and wide. A good reputation will spread even farther,
particularly if it is a reputation for devotion to the Lotus Sutra."

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might
bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun
rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the
practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] Words of the Week Feb. 9th-15th + Daily Gosho Feb 9th + Daily Enc. Feb 10th

* As there was a Japanese press holiday today there is therefore no "To My
Friends" but, as mentioned yesterday, we held over "Words of the Week" to
cover the gap. All the best...

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

February 9th-15th, 2009
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
""When one practices the Lotus Sutra under such
circumstances, difficulties will arise, and these are to
be looked on as 'peaceful' practices."*
It is precisely when we struggle to overcome hardships that
our faith is truly strengthened.
Let's muster up our courage and take on all challenges
ahead of us,
so that we can attain victory and true happiness!

* "Concerning the 'peaceful' practices of the Lotus Sutra
of the Wonderful Law and the practices carried out by
Nichiren and his followers now in the Latter Day of the
Law, you should understand that, when one practices the
Lotus Sutra under such circumstances, difficulties will
arise, and these are to be looked on as 'peaceful'
practices." - Ongi kuden, Gosho Zenshu, page 750, The
Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 115

Monday, February 9th, 2009
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In the light of the Buddha's prophecy, 'the last
five-hundred-year period' has already begun. I say that
without fail Buddhism will arise and flow forth from the
east, from the land of Japan."

Daishonin, Vol.1, page 401) Selection source: Learning

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Let us wave the banner of victory in the clear skies! 'Buddhism primarily
concerns itself with victory or defeat' (WND-1, 835). As genuine Buddhists,
we have a mission to become victorious champions. My friends, awaken to your
mission in this existence and the meaning of life. We weren't born to spend
our days in despair, lamenting our sad fate. We weren't born to waste our
lives in self-indulgence and sloth, our days eventually filled with regrets.
We were born to dance in joy and happiness in a great drama of the victory
of the people, overcoming innumerable trials and tribulations and dispelling
the clouds of darkness. As Bodhisattvas of the Earth, there is no struggle
we cannot win. The final victory is already assured. Be brave! Though we may
encounter adversities resembling blizzards, angry waves, or raging storms,
these cannot hold us back. Through our own efforts, let us vibrantly make
the impossible possible, confounding all expectations to the contrary. That
is the great and noble Soka path of mentor and disciple. Stand up with firm
resolve. Advance with vigour. The spirit of indefatigable challenge is the
spirit of youth. To achieve success in our own lives and open a new age of
Soka, let us valiantly uphold the banner of victory!"

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
We have this faith and practice in order to help us battle with our old
habits
and apathetic nature and to help us challenge new things.
Let's break down those barriers that tend to hold us back
and limit our potential.
Then with a totally fresh new perspective and spirit,
let's create our very own personal record of outstanding
growth and victory.
