[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 30th + Daily Enc. July 1st

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let always be very careful to wholeheartedly praise those
who make sincere efforts for kosen-rufu!
And let us also remember to express our heartfelt gratitude to those
who work so tirelessly behind the scenes.
Acknowledging and praising each other's efforts helps each one of us
to expand our capacity to advance and accomplish so much more.
This is the noble way of leaders.*

* Gosho: "When praised highly by others, one feels that there is no hardship one cannot bear. Such is the courage that springs from words of praise. " The True Aspect of All Phenomena - WND-1, page 385

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"(When you shake your head, your hair sways; when your mind begins to work, your body moves.) When a strong wind blows, the grass and trees can no longer remain still, when the earth shakes, the seas are atremble. Thus if one can move Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, can the grass and trees fail to respond, can the waters remain calm?"

(Concerning the Statue of Shakyamuni Buddha Fashioned by Nichigen-nyo - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.2, page 811)

Thursday, July 1st, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The reason for valuing small meetings is that only when people can discuss matters freely and fully, until they are completely satisfied, can the movement grow extensively. If large meetings can be likened to arteries and veins, then small meetings represent the capillaries. Only when the capillaries are functioning smoothly can blood flow through the entire body. If small meetings aren't fulfilling for members, the spirit of Buddhist faith and practice will not flow throughout the entire organisation. Any organisation that ignores small meetings is doomed to collapse in the end."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 29th + Daily Enc. June 30th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's transform the hardest and most trying moments
into the most enjoyable and memorable ones.
This, in fact, is the way to live life!
Let us together make an all out effort
to create and leave behind a history
that stands out, as the Gosho says,
as a "memory of our present life in this human world."*

* Gosho: Questions and Answers about Embracing the Lotus Sutra – The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, page 64, "Single-mindedly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same; that will remain as the only memory of your present life in this human world."

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered."

"One particular lesson to be learned is having the courage to leap directly into the most challenging places on the front lines for the sake of people's happiness. Someone can be skilled, bright, and clever, but if they don't have the courage to stay on the right path, the path of good, then they're lacking in one of the qualities that is most essential of all."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 28th + Words of the Week June 28th - July 4th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, June , 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's shine a light of hope in front of
each one of our district members
by offering warm and sincere words of encouragement.
By chanting and taking on challenges together,
let's, with great cheer and enthusiasm,
play out life's dramas happily and joyfully.

Monday, June 28th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement,'Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,' cannot be false in any way."

(The Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 217)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, June 28th, 2010

June 28th-July 4th, 2010
---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
To stand up for the sake of justice takes a lot of courage.
Just as the Daishonin encourages us,
"(From now on, too, no matter what may happen,)
you must not slacken in the least."*
Let's indeed speak out, without hesitation,
for the sake of justice and truth with confidence and conviction.
By making such great tenacious efforts,
let's open up that way to victory!

"Xi'an Jiaotong University has produced a mighty river of capable people, who embody this deep and ardent spirit of always remembering the source and returning to the starting point, of advancing and working unstintingly to repay the debts of gratitude they owe to others."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 24th + Daily Enc. June 25th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, June 24th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Both in life and in our journey for kosen-rufu,
it is those who make up their minds to "win, no matter what"
that are victorious in the end!
Let our voices ring out as we unsparingly speak the truth,
overflowing with hope
and enjoying every single moment of our great advance!

Thursday, June 24th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The first shi of the word shishi, or 'lion' [which means 'teacher'], is the Wonderful Law that is passed on by the teacher. The second shi [which means 'child'] is the Wonderful Law as it is received by the disciples. The 'roar' is the sound of the teacher and disciples chanting in unison. The verb sa, 'to make' or 'to roar,' should here be understood to mean to initiate or to put forth. It refers to the initiating of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in the Latter Day of the Law.

(Ongi kuden - Gosho Zenshu, page 748, The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 111)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, June 24th, 2010

Friday, June 25th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In a letter to the young Nanjo Tokimitsu at the time of the Atsuhara Persecution, Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'My wish is that all my disciples make a great vow....Since death is the same in either case, you should be willing to offer your life for the Lotus Sutra. Think of this offering as a drop of dew rejoining the ocean, or a speck of dust returning to the earth' (WND-1, 1003). The 'great vow' of which the Daishonin speaks here is the vow to realise kosen-rufu--the noble undertaking to spread the Mystic Law far and wide. It is also, by extension, the vow to establish the correct teaching for the peace of the land--a lofty endeavour to build and defend the bastion of the happiness of the people. To achieve this great vow, we need to challenge ourselves wholeheartedly and courageously. When we do so, we will break out of our tiny shells, and be able to develop a boundless state of life as vast as the ocean, an indestructible state of life as solid as the earth."

SGI Newsletter No. 8021, Editorial - Youth, Break through Obstacles!, from the July 2010 issue of Daibyakurenge, translated June 22nd, 2010.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 17th + Daily Enc. June 18th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, June 17th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
No matter how fiercely the rough seas of society
threaten to overwhelm you, never ever give up!
Have confidence and believe in your strengths and abilities..
As long as you've determined never to give up hope,
the path before you will most certainly open up!

Thursday, June 17th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The place where the person upholds and honours the Lotus Sutra is the 'place of practice' to which the person proceeds. It is not that he leaves his present place and goes to some other place."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"This inner sun exists within the lives of all people. In a letter to Nichigen-nyo, the wife of Shijo Kingo, Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The sun breaks through the pitch-black dark,' and 'The Lotus Sutra is [like] the sun' (WND-1, 315). No matter how great our problems, the moment we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, in accord with the principle of the simultaneity of cause and effect, the sun of the Mystic Law rises in our hearts and the power of the Buddha surges forth from within us.

"Consequently, there is no way that you...will end up unhappy. The more problems you have to chant about and the more hardships you have to challenge, the more you can develop and grow."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 15th + Daily Enc. June 16th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Buddhism is about winning and being successful!
First, let us chant earnestly and wholeheartedly
(to make the impossible possible).
Second, let us be strongly united in our efforts,
with the spirit of 'many in body, one in mind'.
Third, let us muster up all our courage
so that we may leave no stone unturned
in our efforts towards achieving our goals.
Based on these three very important ingredients,
let's strive to achieve complete victory in our lives.

* SGI President Ikeda outlined these three very important ingredients for success in his message to the June headquarters' leaders' meeting.

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Nichiren and his followers are few, because they are different in body, but united in mind, they will definitely accomplish their great mission of widely propagating the Lotus Sutra. Though evils may be numerous, they cannot prevail over a single great truth."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 12th + Daily Enc. June 13th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, June 12th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Now is the time for all disciples to stand up
and fulfil the vow they made to their mentor.
Courageously, enthusiastically and in high spirits,
let's go to the very forefront of activities
and help create a wave of joy and happiness!

Saturday, June 12th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It is said that, if a teacher has a good disciple, both will gain the fruit of Buddhahood, but if a teacher fosters a bad disciple, both will fall into hell. If teacher and disciple are of different minds, they will never accomplish anything."

(Flowering and Bearing Grain - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 909)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, June 12, 2010

Sunday, June 13th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is a religion of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land.' 'Establishing the correct teaching' means establishing the Buddhist principles of compassion and respect for life in the hearts and minds of each protagonist of social change--in other words, each individual in society. Establishing the correct teaching consequently brings to the people 'the peace of the land'--or, a peaceful and prosperous society. 'Establishing the correct teaching'--carrying out the religious mission of practitioners of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism--can be considered to be attained through realising 'the peace of the land'--that is, achieving the social mission of practitioners.

"There can be no individual happiness unless society is peaceful and prosperous, which is why Nichiren Daishonin declares: 'If you care anything about your personal security, you should first of all pray for order and tranquillity throughout the four quarters of the land, should you not?' (WND-1, 24).

"'Tranquillity throughout the four quarters of the land' means social stability, or on a broader scale, world peace and prosperity.

"Religion does not exist for its own sake. Only when religion results in 'the peace of the land,' or social peace and prosperity, can it be said to exist for the sake of the people and its basic purpose-- relieving the sufferings of all humankind.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho June 10th + Daily Enc. June 11th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, June 10th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Around areas where we hold meetings
it's important that we exercise some good common sense.
Let's show the utmost of consideration
towards the people living in the neighbourhood.
making sure that we never inconvenience or bother them,
particularly by talking in a loud voice
or by parking our means of transportation in an inconsiderate manner!
The advancement of the Soka Gakkai, throughout eternity,
depends completely on the level of trust we enjoy with our neighbours!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The teaching to be spread in the Latter Day to free people from suffering is the great Law of the Daishonin's Buddhism of sowing--that is, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo--which has the power to directly activate the Buddha nature in each individual's life, irrespective of their capacity for understanding. As the fundamental 'seed of Buddhahood' by which all Buddhas are born, the Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo enables people of this defiled latter age to positively transform their lives on the most fundamental level."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Ah Miyagi* that brings to mind the vigour of fresh, glistening leaves.
The place where a whole castle of capable people
overflowing with the mentor-disciple spirit are.
Send out waves of daimoku for our complete and absolute victory!
With the unwavering tenacity of a roaring lion,
now is the time for us all to stand up and fulfil our pledge for kosen-rufu!

* Miyagi Prefecture is located in the northern part of Japan. It is famous for Aoba Castle (the jpn.word "Aoba" literally translates as "Fresh Leaves")

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"(Now when Nichiren and his followers perform ceremonies for the deceased, reciting the Lotus Sutra and) chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the ray of light from the daimoku reaches all the way to the hell of incessant suffering and makes it possible for them to attain Buddhahood then and there."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"When we awaken to the equal and impartial Law of Nam- myoho-renge-kyo, we come to feel a deep connection to others, and as more people share this kind of kinship, it will bring humanity closer together. We also gain the strength to triumph over the tumultuous times of the Latter Day and create peace and happiness. The key is for each of us to manifest in our lives the power of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the fundamental Law of enlightenment. This is the purpose of our efforts for kosen-rufu. Further, through our continuous efforts to spread the correct teaching, we can overcome the crisis of the decline of the Law--a situation in which 'quarrels and disputes prevail, and the pure Law is obscured and lost' (WND-1, 391)."

LEARNING FROM THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN: THE TEACHINGS FOR VICTORY, [16] 'The Selection of the Time'--Part 1 (WND-1, 538-42). The Time for Worldwide Kosen-rufu, for World Peace, from the April 2010 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translated June 8th, 2010.
