---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Lotus Sutra has long been praised as the 'king of sutras.' Recently, an SGI-sponsored Lotus Sutra exhibition was held in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India (in August 2010). Among the items on display was a first edition copy of the first published Sanskrit version of the Lotus Sutra (by Kern and Nanjio). Dr. Lokesh Chandra, director of the International Academy of Indian Culture, had presented this copy to us as a gift. It is the very same edition that was once read by Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948).

"Dr. Chandra has said:

"Nichiren stated that the true Buddha land is not some distant, unknown pure land but the saha world, the actual world in which we live. He also taught that in order to transform society, which is filled with problems and suffering, into the ideal realm of the Buddha, we need to spread the spirit of the Lotus Sutra and bring it to life in the world.

"Dr. Chandra has also remarked that his esteem for the Soka Gakkai is based on its positive engagement with society, its commitment to translating Buddhism into action in the real world, rather than indulging in abstract theories.

"We must never veer from this fundamental course of putting the Daishonin's Buddhism into practice in the real world. We must continue boldly advancing on the path advocated by founding Soka Gakkai president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, who declared:.'Buddhism is a teaching for daily life.' As I once confirmed with a group of SGI-USA leaders some years ago, the initials 'SGI' could also be thought of as standing for 'social good institution'--in other words, an organisation that exists for the betterment of society.

"Recently, I received a letter from a Japanese women's division member--she is a vice group leader and also a Soka Schools alumni. She shared an experience she had while living in Taiwan with her husband who had been transferred there for work. On a visit to the city of Taichung, she wrote, she happened to meet and talk with a young Taiwanese woman who was not a Soka Gakkai member. When she told the young woman that she was a Soka Gakkai member, the young woman smiled broadly and reached out to shake her hand, saying: 'I'm very grateful to you.' Surprised, the member asked her why, and the young woman replied that she was deeply appreciative of positive contributions the local Soka Gakkai members were making to the city. Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior has recognized the Taiwan Soka Association (SGI-Taiwan) as an excellent community organisation for 16 years in a row.

"The Daishonin encourages his followers to live in such a way that they will earn the praise and admiration of others, and our SGI members around the world are doing just that."

"The reason why the Soka Gakkai has survived troubled times and emerged victorious is that we have continually exerted ourselves in the 'two ways of practice and study' (WND-1, 386). Earnest study of the Daishonin's writings gives momentum to our movement for kosen-rufu and is the key to the solid foundation of the Soka Gakkai's people-centred organisation. It is also the driving force for fostering capable individuals and promoting dynamic development for an eternally youthful Soka Gakkai."

"Through the power of faith
in the Mystic Law,
triumphantly achieve happiness
for yourself
and your loved ones.

"The teachings and writings of Nichiren Daishonin constitute a crystallization of wisdom encompassing the philosophies and ideals of all ages and countries. In his treatise 'The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind,' the Daishonin writes: 'When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated. Similarly, when one knows the Lotus Sutra, one understands the meaning of all worldly affairs' (WND-1, 376).

"The purpose of the Daishonin's Buddhism is to enable us to win in life and in society. Especially when we're faced with hardships or challenges, that's the time to read the Gosho, the writings of Nichiren Daishonin. By doing so, our outlook will brighten. The light of hope will dispel the darkness. And the bright sun of courage will rise in our hearts.

"When we embrace the Daishonin's Buddhism of the sun, which illuminates the entire world, there is no knotty problem that we cannot surmount.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 28th Dec. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 29th Dec. Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin encourage us to "treat our friends with courtesy."*
Let us always treasure our long time friends
and at the same time forge new friendships,
helping as many people as we can
to establish a connection with Buddhism.
Interacting with everyone based on sincerity in what we say and do,
let us fruitfully see out this year and see in the new!

*The Daishonin teaches in his letter to Nanjo Tokimitsu the four virtues of Confucian-Taoist ethics: (1) filial piety toward one's father and mother; (2) loyalty to one's lord; (3) courtesy towards one's friends; and (4) pity and kindness towards those less fortunate than oneself. He states, "Third, treating one's friends with courtesy means that, although one may encounter them ten or twenty times in the course of a single day, one greets them courteously as though they had travelled a thousand or two thousand miles to see one, never showing them indifference."

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Just as flowers open up and bear fruit, just as the moon appears and invariably grows full, just as a lamp becomes brighter when oil is added, and just as plants and trees flourish with rain, so will human beings never fail to prosper when they make good causes."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
Tanano: "Many youth today struggle with human relationships in the workplace. Some are unable to get along harmoniously with co-workers, avoiding personal connections with them, while others quickly become emotional and often find themselves in conflicts."

President Ikeda: "I'm sure this can be looked at in many different ways, but I think at the root of such problems lies a mistrust towards others on the one hand and a lack of self-confidence on the other. Of course, it may also be related to the timeswe live in.

"The Daishonin writes: 'The extremity of greed, anger, and foolishness in people's hearts in the impure world of the latter age makes it difficult for any worthy or sage to control' (WND-1, 1121). The Latter Day is an age in which people's minds are confused and impure. Furthermore, it is an age when society is unstable and deadlocked, and conflict between people is rife. This is precisely why we need a solid philosophy on which we can base our lives.

"Shijo Kingo, one of the Daishonin's followers, also struggled in his place of employ. He encountered opposition as a result of sharing the Daishonin's Buddhism with his lord and was the target of slanderous rumours by jealous colleagues. Many around him harboured malice and resentment towards him.

"However, the Daishonin writes to the embattled Shijo Kingo: 'A fire burns higher when logs are added, and a strong wind makes a kalakula grow larger' (WND-1, 471). A kalakula is a mythological insect that is said to grow larger when a strong wind blows. Here, the Daishonin is encouraging his disciple that the harsher the winds of adversity blow, the more he will be able to develop himself and strengthen his faith.

"Complaining won't get us anywhere. Faith in the Daishonin's Buddhism is the driving force for doing our human revolution and becoming stronger and wiser. Our practice enables us to transform even the negative relationships in our lives that cause us suffering into positive relationships that help us grow."
SGI Newsletter No. 8134, YOUTH AND THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN, The Soka Network: An Alliance of People Dedicated to Good--Part 1 [of 2], from the Oct. 24th, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated Dec. 21st, 2010

"Everyone possesses within their life an incredible potential to touch people's lives through dialogue.

"In the Lotus Sutra, the Bodhisattvas of the Earth are described as 'clever at difficult questions and answers, their minds knowing no fear' (cf. LSOC15, 263). All of you, youthful Bodhisattvas of the Earth, have appeared in this defiled age with the ability to surmount obstacles and pioneer new paths for the sake of realising kosen-rufu.

"Everything starts with courage. For us ordinary beings, courage substitutes for compassion. We show compassion to others by having the courage to speak with them. Steadfast dialogue is a sure way of doing good. It is a path of spreading happiness. And it leads to a magnificent revival of the human spirit, elevating the life-state of humankind and connecting the hearts of people everywhere."

"Regard your service to your lord as the practice of the Lotus Sutra. This is what is meant by 'No worldly affairs of life or work are ever contrary to the true reality.'"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin states: 'The Buddha is also called [One Who Can Endure]' (WND-1, 41), and 'This mind of forbearance is called Shakyamuni Buddha' (OTT, 169). Soka Gakkai members have embodied these golden words in this age that is described in the sutras as the evil age of the Latter Day of the Law.

"We continue to share the Daishonin's Buddhism with others, even if at first they may react negatively, because we believe in their inherent Buddha nature. Fundamentally, by doing so, we are expressing our deep respect for them. Sharing the Daishonin's Buddhism with others is a way to expand both our own life and that of others. The more efforts we make towards this end, the more we awaken and activate other people's Buddha nature, while simultaneously strengthening our own Buddha nature.

"The Daishonin writes: 'Because one has heard the Lotus Sutra, which leads to Buddhahood, with this as the seed, one will invariably become a Buddha' (WND-1, 882). By introducing others to the Daishonin's Buddhism, we plant the seeds of Buddhahood in their lives--seeds that will definitely come to bloom in the future.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 24th Dec. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 25th Dec. Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, December 24th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
For those who are making a desperate and passionate effort to achieve
their goals or to overcome their problems,
there is no wall, no obstacle that can get in their way.
All the hardships that you experience along the way
will definitely become your treasures in life.
Let's all do our absolute utmost to challenge what we're up against
and emerge the victors, the ones who have succeeded!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The spirit within one's body of five or six feet may appear in just one's face, which is only a foot long, and the spirit within one's face may appear in just one's eyes, which are only an inch across."

(The One Essential Phrase - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 748)
Selection source: SGI President Ikeda's message, Seikyo Shimbun, December 24th, 2010

Saturday, December, 25th 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"...our efforts for dialogue aim to deepen and broaden the bonds between people. This could be called, I suppose, an expansion of an alliance of people dedicated to good.

"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, the Daishonin states: ''Joy' means that oneself and others together experience joy.... Both oneself and others together will take joy in their possession of wisdom and compassion' (OTT, 146).

"What is the aim of our dialogues? It is to manifest our Buddha nature and help others do the same. In other words, it is to reveal the supreme good within us that shines with wisdom and compassion.

"...But if this were a simple task, we wouldn't have to strive so hard.

"The Lotus Sutra describes the wisdom of the Buddha as 'difficult to believe and difficult to understand' (LSOC7, 173). Most people can't believe that they inherently possess the noble life-state of Buddhahood within them. They don't realise that their own life is a precious treasure with infinite potential.

"While there are some people who put themselves down, there are also others who look down on others, thinking arrogantly that they are special, and unable to believe that all people are equally respectworthy. I'm sure many of you...have had experiences in which you shared the Daishonin's Buddhism with others, but they just didn't seem to understand it.

"Ultimately, the dialogues we in the Soka Gakkai undertake are a struggle against the devilish functions within life that create unhappiness and division, a struggle against the delusion or ignorance that gives rise to mistrust and hatred,

"The Daishonin writes of the intensity of this struggle:

The devil king of the sixth heaven has roused the ten kinds of troops and, in the midst of the sea of the sufferings of birth and death, is at war with the votary of the Lotus Sutra to stop him from taking possession of and to wrest away from him this impure land where both ordinary people and sages dwell. (WND-2, 465)

"Sharing the Daishonin's Buddhism, expanding friendship, doing home visits--all of these are an expression of respect for others' Buddha nature. In our society where egoism and mistrust seem to abound, a gathering like the Soka Gakkai that believes in and takes action for others to this extent is surely difficult to find."
21st, 2010

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Giving guidance or encouragement in faith
basically means to teach someone about the greatness of the Gohonzon.
Based on our own experiences in faith,
let's enthusiastically share the great confidence
and conviction we have (in the power of this practice.)

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"You also are a practitioner of the Lotus Sutra, and your faith is like the waxing moon or the rising tide. Be deeply convinced, then, that your illness cannot possibly persist, and that your life cannot fail to be extended! Take care of yourself, and do not burden your mind with grief."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"People today seem more isolated and disconnected and human ties are increasingly growing weaker.

"Human beings need each other to survive. No matter how tough one tries to act in being all alone, a lonely life is sad and unhappy. It doesn't bring a true sense of happiness. If the number of isolated youth increases, society, too, will invariably face many problems. Now, more than ever, a philosophy that unites people and dialogue that forges heart-to-heart connections are essential for leading truly rich and fulfilling lives."

The SGI's foundations are rock solid
thanks to all the efforts of our friends
who work so diligently behind the scenes to support our activities.
All the Buddhas and protective forces of the universe
are applauding all your efforts with great applause!
Our most sincere gratitude

May laurels of appreciation and victory always adorn you.

"The Daishonin observes: 'Ultimately, all phenomena are contained within one's life, down to the last particle of dust. The nine mountains and the eight seas are encompassed in one's body, and the sun, moon, and myriad stars are found in one's life' (WND-1, 629).

"Our life at each moment encompasses all phenomena and is endowed with potential as vast as the universe. When we awaken to this fact, our life starts to open up to others, to society, and to the universe as a whole. Our efforts for kosen-rufu based on the great principle of the Mystic Law cause our body and mind to brim with the power of the universe. Our heart pulses with a timeless beat--the irrepressible desire to help our fellow human beings who are suffering and give them hope and courage.

"A Buddha is one who brings forth compassion, wisdom, and courage as boundless as the universe.

"No matter what challenges we may face, let us look up at the vast heavens above, take a deep breath, and continue to advance victoriously along the proud path of our respective missions."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 17th Dec. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 18th Dec. Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, December 17th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
In order to make sure that we create value,
especially in a hectic holiday season/year end like now,
it is vital that we always start the day, every morning,
by chanting fervent daimoku.
Then, brimming with great life force,
let's spend a meaningful day, each and every day,
writing our autobiography without any feelings of regret.

The purpose of our faith and Buddhist practice is to be victorious. And kosen-rufu is the victory of good and justice.

"As Mr. Toda's disciple, I have exerted myself without cease to spread the Daishonin's Buddhism in this age of the Latter Day of the Law--described in the sutras as an age of quarrels and disputes--and raised the victory banner of kosen-rufu around the globe.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 16th Dec. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 17th Dec. Daily Enc.

* We must apologies for yesterday's "3 guidelines being "Faith for a harmonious family, etc..." The three guidelines which Sensei is referring to are the guidelines he gave in a message to the last Headquarters Leaders Meeting and they are: "1. Let's make joyous daimoku resound from our districts. 2. Let's bring forth many capable Bodhisattvas of the Earth from our districts. And 3. Let's raise the banner of victory from our districts." The background to each of these was /is / and will be carried in the Daily Encouragement section. Once again our apologies for any confusion this might have caused!

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Talented and able people certainly do abound.
What is important though if for us to discover,
encourage and nurture them.
Let us make every effort to take the lead
in encouraging each person to reveal their hidden and full potential
and truly bloom!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Let's bring forth many capable Bodhisattvas of the Earth from our districts.

"When second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda vowed at his inauguration six decades ago (in May 1951) to achieve a membership of 750,000 households during his lifetime, most of our members took his words as an impossible dream. But I, 23 years old at the time, set about launching a powerful groundswell of propagation from my local district in order to make the vow of my mentor a reality.

"All of the members in our districts are Bodhisattvas of the Earth who have a profound mission. Our districts are infinitely noble assemblies that are actually calling forth Bodhisattvas of the Earth, one after another.

"All over our planet, we will see more and more Bodhisattvas of the Earth emerging in steady succession--'first one, then two, three, and a hundred will follow, chanting and teaching others' (cf. WND-1, 385). The Daishonin firmly assures us of this."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's make our districts the home-ground
from where joyful and vibrant daimoku emerges!
Let it be the soil from which many capable talented people,
(Bodhisattvas of the earth,) emerge!
And let it become the place where the banner of victory flies high!
By using the three eternal guidelines of Soka,*
let's break through any and all forms of difficulty!

* Faith for a harmonious family, Faith for each person to become happy, Faith for surmounting obstacles.

"Let's make joyous daimoku resound from our districts.

"Some of our members are struggling with financial difficulties or health issues. But, as the Daishonin writes. 'Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?' (WND-1, 412). The power of chanting even a single daimoku is immense. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the sound of 'the greatest of all joys' (cf. OTT, 212). It is the fundamental law of the entire universe.

"The Gakkai overflows with boundless good fortune accumulated as a result of our members earnestly chanting daimoku for the happiness of themselves and others.

"I hope you will continue chanting vigorously through good times and bad, and always warmly support and encourage each other. Please make your districts brim with the great benefit of faith and bring forth wonderfully inspiring experiences of changing poison into medicine."
