-- TO MY FRIENDS --
This is the time to make progress!
"Here I come! I'm going to do it!"
With such enthusiasm,
let's spur ourselves into action.
Each and every day,
let's give it our all
so that we can proudly say at the end of each day,
"Today again I was successful. Today again I won!"

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Thus the word kudoku means to attain Buddhahood in one's present form. It also means the purification of the six sense organs. You should understand that to practice the Lotus Sutra as the sutra itself directs is to carry out purification of the six sense organs."
(Ongi kuden - Gosho Zenshu, page 762, The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 148 The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page )

---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
February-- the traditional month for our dynamic development in propagation.
Wisdom is found within the actual challenges we take on.
The joy is in the struggle at the forefront of our activities.
Let's stand up, right now, and take courageous action,
let's break through that impasse!

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin states,
"(If you propagate it, devils will arise without fail.)
If they did not, there would be no way of knowing
that this is the correct teaching."*
By, most importantly, having firm faith,
let us find a way to overcome every obstacle!
It is precisely when we are confronted by hardships
that we can bring forth boundless strength from within.

*"Letter to the Brothers" - WDN-I, page 501

**"No matter what worries or sufferings we may have, it is important that we pray honestly about them to the Gohonzon."

"As we live out lives of mission, we are certain to encounter a variety of painful difficulties. But as long as our hearts remain firm, as long as we are not swayed in our faith, there is no hardship we cannot overcome, there is no ordeal that we cannot break through. People inherently possess immeasurable power. This is the power of the Buddha of limitless joy who has been enlightened since time without beginning.

"Therefore, the more we struggle, the more power we can draw forth. Faith is the means for drawing forth this hidden treasure. Great hardship leads to attaining enlightenment. Great persecution ensures that we will quickly become Buddhas."
(The World of Nichiren Daishonin's Writings, Vol. 2)

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"What is most important is that, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo alone, you can attain Buddhahood. It will no doubt depend on the strength of your faith. To have faith is the basis of Buddhism."

If you notice that your health is not at it's best,
it may be better to take it easy
and not push yourself so unreasonably.
At such times head home early and go to bed as soon as you can
so that you can give your body time to rest and recover.
If we find someone in such a situation,
let's be considerate of them and encourage them to get the rest.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 23rd Jan To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 24th Jan Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
One person at a time, let's meet with others
and build a warm heart-to-heart connection.
Let's spread hope widely in our local community.
The dialogue we have with others is like the sun
brightly lighting up the era.

"For example, if one lights a fire for others, one will brighten one's own way."
(On the Three Virtues of Food - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.2, page 1060)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The French historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874) keenly observed: 'When the home is shaken, everything is shaken.' Even if we talk about peace and happiness, if we ignore the family, it will only be empty words.

"The Soka Gakkai has continued to focus on the real-life challenges of the 'human revolution' of each individual and the "family revolution' of each family. These efforts may be arduous and painstaking, but they are precisely why our membership is so solid and unshakable.

"...The Great Teacher Dengyo of Japan states: 'When, in the family, honour is paid diligently to the teachings [of the Lotus Sutra], the seven disasters will most certainly be banished' (WND-2, 1026). How important it is therefore that the sound of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo comes to resound in more and more homes and the philosophy of the sanctity of life becomes more widely established in our communities.

"Where there is a network of people who encourage, protect, and support one another, safe havens of hope that are undefeated by disasters will spread throughout society. And this will lead to the construction of a peaceful and prosperous society based on the life-affirming principles of Buddhism and soundly grounded in the family and the community.

"...There's no need to be impatient or in a hurry. When I first joined the Soka Gakkai, my father disapproved of my practice. I remember my mother went through great pains to mediate between us.

"The Daishonin writes: 'When ordinary people in the latter age hear this doctrine [of the Lotus Sutra], not only will they themselves attain Buddhahood, but also their fathers and mothers will attain Buddhahood in their present forms. This is the highest expression of filial devotion' (WND-2, 744).

"It's important to start with your own human revolution and make your inner Buddhahood shine forth. It's also vital to cherish your family. By showing that you have grown, you will reassure your parents. The Daishonin states: 'Nothing is more certain than actual proof' (WND-1, 478), and 'Even more valuable than reason and documentary proof is the proof of actual fact' (WND-1, 599)."

who may not have been able to come for various different reasons.
Every single one of us, without exception,
is an extremely precious capable person.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Many lament the alienation of contemporary society, characterised by a pervasive loneliness and isolation and the loss of the ties of warmth and affection holding people together.

"Back in Nichiren Daishonin's day, during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the Pure Land school's practice of chanting the name of Amida Buddha--which the Daishonin described as the 'melancholy drone of the Nembutsu' (GZ, 96) --gave rise to a widespread sense of apathy and impotence. The Nembutsu teaching urged people to seek rebirth after death in a distant, illusory pure land, which only reinforced the prevailing tendency to reject positive involvement with the real world. It was at such a time that the Daishonin embarked on a course of dialogue to establish the correct teaching for the peace of the land. He did so, he says, 'solely for the sake of the nation, for the sake of the Law, for the sake of others' (WND-1, 164).

"In that same great spirit, we are striving with sincerity and courage to hold lively, heart-to-heart dialogues with as many people as possible. The highest hope for illuminating our alienated society is none other than the Mystic Law."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, January 21st, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The dynamic development of kosen-rufu begins with daimoku.
Let's make the joyous chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
resound from our districts and groups.
Let's open up the gateway to victory!

*Three points offered by President Ikeda towards 2030, the Soka Gakkai's Centennial:
1) Let's make the joyous chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo resound from our districts.
2) Let's bring forth many capable Bodhisattvas of the Earth from our districts.
3) Let's raise the banner of victory from our districts.

"Life is action. Buddhism means moving forwards. If we don't take action, nothing happens. If we don't make an effort to speak with others, nothing begins. Shakyamuni Buddha was a person who initiated conversations with others in an open and friendly manner. In an early Buddhist scripture, he is described as speaking in order to promote harmony: 'Thus does he live as a binder together of those who are divided, an encourager of those who are friends.' There is no such thing as a haughty and self-satisfied Buddha who does nothing for others. A Buddha is one who works tirelessly for people's happiness.

"Those who go out and strive with all their might to help and aid the suffering and troubled are truly admirable. Our members are a gathering of Buddhas of just such noble altruism."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 19th Jan. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 20th Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The essential spirit and attitude of a leader for kosen-rufu
is to take concrete action.
Let's all advance with powerful momentum
based on chanting daimoku, taking action,
studying (the Daishonin's Buddhism) and speaking with people.
With absolutely boundless joy I depend on you to lead the way!

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It also states that, if the minds of living beings are impure, their land is also impure, but if their minds are pure, so is their land. There are not two lands, pure or impure in themselves. The difference lies solely in the good or evil of our minds."
(On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 4)
Selection source: "Member's Experience", page 4, Seikyo Shimbun, January 19th, 2011

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"You are all challenging yourselves valiantly to realise great victories for kosen-rufu, by diligently studying Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, speaking with others, chanting daimoku, taking action, and going to meet people. Carrying out such activities for kosen-rufu as Soka Gakkai members is not only an important key to personal happiness, but is also the surest, truest, and most honourable way to cheerfully lead your parents, family members, friends, and others in your environment to genuine, lasting happiness.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'When the sun rises in the eastern sector of the sky, then all the skies over the great continent of Jambudvipa [the entire world]... will be illuminated because of the vast light that the sun possesses' (WND-1, 169). The Mystic Law is the light of the sun illuminating all life. No matter how dark the times, when Bodhisattvas of the Earth appear, chanting and spreading the daimoku of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they will illuminate the community and the land in which they live with the vast light of hope."

"Even towering Mount Sumeru began from a single speck of dust, and the vast ocean began from a single drop of dew. All things start from small steps or beginnings. This is the central theme of 'The Blessings of the Lotus Sutra.' As an old proverb says: 'One is the mother of ten thousand' (WND-1, 131). In this writing, we also find the words: 'One added to one becomes two, two becomes three, and so on to make ten, a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand, or an asamkhya. Yet 'one' is the mother of all' (WND-1, 667). In the same way, the widespread propagation of the Mystic Law in the Latter Day began with the single person of Nichiren Daishonin."

Let's make sure to lock up securely
and check all possible fire hazards very carefully
before we leave our SGI centres and other facilities.
At the same time,
it is very important to make clear who is responsible for what.
Always having appreciation for those members
who voluntarily guard our treasure-castle-like centres,
let us all make every possible effort
so that we don't help create any kind of accident or incident
and can advance victoriously together!

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, January 13th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Win in the morning!
A good rhythm of life is the driving force for victory.
Let's start each day off by doing a vigorous gongyo and daimoku
with the rhythm like that of a galloping white horse!*

* "In addition, a person's attitude in doing gongyo reveals itself in how that person lives. A person whose gongyo is weak will lack vital energy and will lapse inevitably into a feeble way of living. If you do gongyo only as if it were a chore or out of a sense of obligation, it will be hard for you to feel joy in your faith. Therefore, let's encourage one another to do a refreshing and rhythmical gongyo, like a mythical white flying horse galloping through the sky. Together let's aim to do a superb, powerful gongyo each day, one that will move the entire universe and is infused with our earnest prayers."
(Human Revolution, Volume 12, "Declaration" chapter)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"We who uphold the Mystic Law believe that all people--both ourselves and others--innately possess the supreme life-state of Buddhahood. When we strive as emissaries and disciples of the Buddha--chanting the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra ourselves and encouraging others to do the same--we can spread the philosophy of genuine respect for the sanctity of life far and wide and enrich the world through the workings of Buddhist compassion.

"What our world needs today are more and more genuinely committed people who embody the life-affirming ideals of the Lotus Sutra. That is, individuals who can teach others through their personal experiences and actions that all people alike are endowed with infinitely noble potential. By awakening to that inner potential, we can defeat the discrimination that is the fundamental source of all evil and arises from the darkness or ignorance in human life. Also, only by deeply recognising the inherent dignity of the lives of all human beings can we triumph in the struggle to fundamentally overcome the perennial problem of war that plagues humanity."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 12th Jan To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 13th Jan Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
A "leader" in the true sense of the meaning is
someone who talks sincerely and straight from the heart.
Let's therefore all work on becoming maestros of leadership
who can lift up people's spirits, help them to experience joy
and make everyone feel relaxed and at ease!

"Each of you should summon up the courage of a lion king and never succumb to threats from anyone. The lion king fears no other beast, nor do its cubs."

Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, January 12th, 2011

Thursday, January 13th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"...Kosen-rufu is realised through one person reaching out and sharing the correct teaching with another--as indicated by the passage 'two people, three people, ten people, a hundred people will join in chanting [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo]' (WND-1, 672). This is because kosen-rufu is a movement to awaken the lives of one person after another.

"In exact accord with the Daishonin's words, we of the Soka Gakkai have spread the correct teaching by talking with others and telling them about our Buddhist practice. The cornerstones of our movement are one-on-one dialogue and discussion meetings.

"It was Mr. Makiguchi who began this tradition of dialogue and discussion meetings. To a youth who suggested that holding large-scale lectures might be more effective than discussion meetings, Mr. Makiguchi said with keen insight: 'No, it wouldn't. Dialogue is the only way to communicate with another about life's problems. At a lecture, listeners inevitably feel uninvolved. Even Nichiren Daishonin's treatise 'On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land' was written in the form of a dialogue, you know.'

"Mr. Toda often said: 'Kosen-rufu begins with one-on-one, face-to-face dialogue.' With this same conviction, I have made constant efforts to engage in one-on-one dialogue.

"The important thing is encouraging each person one on one with genuine warmth and humanity and inspiring them in faith. As long as this tradition stays alive, the Soka Gakkai's continued development is assured."
