[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 31st March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 1st April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, March 31st, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Illuminating the hearts of those you meet with words of encouragement
that uplifts people's spirits like the sunshine of spring --
our dear members of the Young Women's Division,
the benefits you are accruing through all your efforts
will certainly stay with you throughout eternity.
I press my palms together in deep gratitude to
all of our sisters of the Kayo-Kai family*
who are making tireless noble efforts for the sake of others.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo no matter what happens."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Ultimately, all phenomena are contained within one's life, down to the last particle of dust. The nine mountains and the eight seas are encompassed in one's body, and the sun, moon, and myriad stars are found in one's life' (WND-1, 629). The Daishonin is saying that everything in the universe--the mountains, seas, sun, moon, and stars--is found within our own lives, not somewhere outside us. Indeed, our lives encompass wisdom and power as vast as the universe itself.

"While tapping this supreme power within you and making allies of heaven and earth, you are striving wholeheartedly to fulfil your admirable mission for the happiness of others, the welfare of your communities, and a better future. I applaud you for living truly noble lives in which hard work leads to victory and perseverance leads to glory."
SGI Newsletter No. 8194, Strive to Build Wonderful Realms of Peace and Happiness, from the February 17th, 2011, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated March 29th, 2011

"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,'cannot be false in any way."

"[With regard to the term, the 'lion's roar' (shishi ku):] The first shi [which means 'teacher'] of the word shishi, or 'lion,' is the Wonderful Law that is passed on by the teacher. The second shi [which means 'child'] is the Wonderful Law as it is received by the disciples. The 'roar' (ku) is the sound of the teacher and the disciples chanting in unison.
From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings (cf. OTT, 111).

"As disciples, it's important that we make our mentor's heart our own and let our voices ring out powerfully with our shared commitment to realise the highest good.

"The lion's roar of mentor and disciple chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo has the unrivalled power to knock back all adversity and transform troubled times."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 29th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 30th March Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all leaders who are making tireless efforts
for the sake of all our friends,
racing along on the very front lines of kosen-rufu -
your sincere efforts have gone and are going a long, long way
in encouraging and rousing the spirits of all those around you!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"What is the poison? It is the three paths of earthly desires, karma, and suffering that are our lot. What is the medicine? It is the Dharma body, wisdom, and emancipation. And what does it mean to change poison into medicine? It means to transform the three paths into the three virtues: the Dharma body, wisdom, and emancipation.... This is what the attainment of Buddhahood in one's present form means."

"The Gohonzon exists within us. The supremely noble life-state of Buddhahood shines nowhere but in our own lives as people dedicated to the cause of kosen-rufu. Consequently, no matter what happens, as long as we maintain strong faith, we will be fine. There is nothing to worry about. Nothing is more precious than the individual human beings who uphold and practice the Mystic Law."

* Here in Tokyo...every effort now is being made to conserve our energy sources, the Eastern Section of The Japanese National Railways, inclusive of Tokyo, has been able to cut its required electricty by 30%, up north more and more people are being long-term housed while others face the reality that it would be best to move out of the area into public housing in other areas of the country. Government measures are also hastily being implemented to give financial relief and to help people stand up again.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 28th March Daily Enc.

* Here in Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan, we move to the next stage of rebuilding - the rebuilding of people's mental health and well-being. TV programmes have returned to normal, non-stop news coverage has been reduced to scheduled programming, commercials have restarted and comedy programmes are now being aired....With this we will reduce the number of "Here in Tokyo..." postings unless something happens...hopefully not!

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, March 27th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Our youth,
who are making every effort to challenge this severe trial,
we are all so proud and thankful for everything that you have done.
The Soka spirit definitely shines in your selfless and dedicated work
that might even be unknown or unseen by others.
We are sincerely chanting daimoku for your good health and victory.

"In a letter to the lay nun Ueno, mother of the young Nanjo Tokimitsu, Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Neither the pure land nor hell exists outside oneself, both lie only within one's own heart....One who embraces the Lotus Sutra will realise that hell is itself the Land of Tranquil Light' (WND-1, 456).

"When we are consumed by the sufferings of our small lesser self, our heart is trapped in the restrictive, confining state of hell. But deep within each of our lives, we possess the free and untrammelled world of Buddhahood, which is vaster than the ocean and wider than the sky. Courage derived from faith in the Daishonin's Buddhism enables us to manifest this expansive state of Buddhahood and build a 'Land of Tranquil Light' right here, in the world in which we live.

"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, said: 'The courage of the Buddha can withstand all misfortune. It can prompt even the most negative and devilish forces to support the cause of Buddhism. If we intrepidly take action, a strength we never knew we had will emerge from within, allowing us to overcome every obstacle.'"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 26th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 27th March Daily Enc.

* Here in Tokyo at the weekend the roads would normally be crowded with shoppers and people driving here and there but instead there are so few, maybe because they are trying to conserve gas/petrol, cutting back out of concern and respect for those people in the badly hit areas who now have next to nothing or worried about the rumoured nuclear fall-out from the reactors. Further north supplies are now finally getting through and requests for certain things have changed from food and water to such things as shampoo and sanitary goods.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 25th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 26th March Daily Enc.

* Two weeks have now gone by since the great earthquake in the Tohoku region. Hours and hours of news programmes today have been covering a lot of the suffering and heroic efforts of many, it is quite an emotional handful to watch! In Tokyo more and more people are arriving to be looked after. Further south other parts of the country are having power outages to save energy and keep the country going. In the north the death toll is now over the 10,000 mark and there are now nearly double that number still missing - many unaccounted for anywhere and others in places where their families have not been able to connect with them yet. For the survivors in a survey done by NHK - Japan National TV - many expressed little hope about what they will do, how they will survive or where they will live and others, as worried as they are, are determined to have hope and fight on. A 29 year-old-woman gave birth the day after it all happened with her contractions coming constantly during the after-shocks, she named her new born "Hikari" meaning Ray of Light, her husband caught up with relief work didn't find out until three days later that he was a father but it certainly encouraged him and the other evacuees! Long-term temporary housing for just over a thousand people will be completed next week and other areas are close behind.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, March 25th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Hope is found precisely within our own hearts.
The lives of those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
are treasure towers themselves.*
Let's therefore, encourage each other and advance together!

*In essence, the appearance of the treasure tower indicates that on hearing the Lotus Sutra the three groups of voice-hearers perceived for the first time the treasure tower within their own lives. Now Nichiren's disciples and lay supporters are also doing this. In the Latter Day of the Law, no treasure tower exists other than the figures of the men and women who embrace the Lotus Sutra. It follows, therefore, that whether eminent or humble, high or low, those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are themselves the treasure tower, and, likewise, are themselves the Thus Come One Many Treasures. No treasure tower exists other than Myoho-renge-kyo. The daimoku of the
Lotus Sutra is the treasure tower, and the treasure tower is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. (On the Treasure Tower, WND-I, page 299)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'When one becomes aware of the Buddha vehicle [the Mystic Law] within oneself, one can enter the palace of oneself [i.e., one's Buddhahood]. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is what is meant by entering the palace of oneself.' (cf. OTT, 209) From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings.

"We who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are ourselves Buddhas. A magnificent palace exists in the depths of our being--a palace that no one can destroy and nothing can desecrate.

"Bringing our lives to shine and working to create beautiful realms of peace and happiness in our beloved communities--this is the invincible spirit of establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 24th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 25th March Daily Enc.

* Today here in Tokyo and in various places not only up north but along the eastern coast line of Japan from Tokyo up, we are still experiencing lots of earthquakes some you can clearly feel, often waking you if they are at night and others you have to look carefully to see if something is moving but it is making many people feel physically sick and of course is understandably making people very anxious. Scamsters are beginning to surface now, pretending to be relief donation collectors not only in person but also on the Internet - please be careful to double check bank account numbers & web-sites before sending anything. Also yesterday's government volunteer web-site address was slightly wrong, sorry! It should be www.tasukeaijapan.jp.... Here's today's To My Friends...

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 23rd March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 24th March Daily Enc.

* Here in Tokyo the panic buying is finally easing up but not fast enough as traces of radioactivity is discovered in the drinking water in Tokyo and, as a precautionary measure, bottles of water are being issued by the government to parents with children less than one year old as stocks have run out in the shops. Soka University has joined the list of universities that will now open one month later in May...but we at Soka High will carry on and start in April! Up north in Tohoku businesses that are still functioning are beginning to fold as vital elements of their industries cannot get through and others refuse to leave the area as they want to be a part of the rebuilding of their towns and villages. The volunteer service has now finally been set up...look out for www.tasukeiajapan.jp for further information, but at the moment it is for people living in Japan who have an ample level of Japanese language ability if nothing else because the web-site is only in Japanese. That may change but if you
are in an area anywhere in Japan where there are foreigners please ask if they are OK! Here is today's To My Friends...

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Now is exactly the time when we really must touch a friend's heart,
speaking in reassuring words, that puts them at ease,
and equips them with great courage!
As we embrace and support each other now in times of such suffering,
let us speak in the type of way that uplifts each others' spirits.
As the Gosho says - "The voice carries out the work of the Buddha."*

"Misfortune will change into fortune. Muster your faith, and pray to this Gohonzon. Then what is there that cannot be achieved? (WND-1, 412) From "Reply to Kyo'o."

There is no hardship or suffering that we cannot overcome, no darkness that we cannot break through. Now is the time to bring forth the vast and immeasurable power of the Buddha and the Law.

"The more challenging the times, the more important it is that we take a step forwards based on powerful prayer. Courageous faith is the very heart of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 23rd March Daily Enc.

* Here in Tokyo today we are feeling more of the 'after-effects' of what has happened, several universities have announced that the new school year (Japan starts in April) will be postponed by one month to enable everyone to get used to the new circumstances we face, this includes young people that would be attending such institutions who would be coming from the most badly hit areas, some private schools might also follow suit. Up north in Tohoku, one positive breaking news in the last hour or so is that electricity has been restored to one of the more seriously effected nuclear reactors so cooling might be possible. Elsewhere in Tohoku they are discussing long term rebuilding using materials and construction methods, learning from what has just happened and more reliance on solar power energy.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 21st March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 21st March - 27th March Words of the Week

* Here in Tokyo and neighbouring prefectures we prepare for many of the refugees to arrive, opening up facilities that had been closed down or had not been used due to a decrease in the Japanese population. Up north many people are very reluctant to leave what they call "home" though, especially those who have lost loved ones and still cannot find them. People are spread out all over the place and in many cases they cannot find each other as they have no internet connections or phones and don't know where to look. Rescue operations are still being hampered by the tremendous distances they have to cover (500 kilometres and more) and many many roads are still blocked.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, March 21st, 2011

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 20th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 21st March Daily Enc.

* Here in Tokyo life gradually is getting back to "normal" but we have many challenges ahead and a new life style we are going to have to accept for a long time. Up north, in Tohoku, things are creeping forwards but the second "Tsunami" is now beginning to kick in, the insufficient rescue of those who have survived, the number of homeless is virtually beyond anyone's ability to look after, people, especially the elderly are in great need of medical and physical help, many are now dieing in the evacuation centres. Helpers & volunteers are working way beyond what they can cope with. Food also is just not around, many are living off one rice ball or piece of pastry for the day, if that. Donations are really needed which hopefully your local SGI organisation can you let you know about and will of course be gratefully appreciated.

NHK - national government TV - has now put up a click on its main web-site where you can find where people have moved to in especially the most devastated areas. It is constantly being updated so if you need to find anyone and cannot find them today, come back later and you may find they are there. You'll need Japanese software to read and input. Here is today's To My Friends...

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, March 20th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
We are all eternal comrades advancing together
throughout the three existences towards kosen-rufu.*
We are indeed the SGI family that transcends birth and death.
Let's always take the time out to encourage one another,
and to advance together brimming with great strength!

* The SGI is truly a sublime gathering of the Buddha's children. It is itself "the assembly on the Holy Peak that continues in solemn state and has not yet disbanded."
The SGI is a gathering of Bodhisattvas of the Earth who, just as in the ceremony on Eagle Peak, have appeared in order to lead all people of the Latter Day to enlightenment and so fulfil their eternal vow. We are eternal comrades advancing together over the three existences toward kosen-rufu. Here in Tokyo...things are day by day looking better. The non-stop news programmes have stopped. Found a loaf of bread yesterday. The kerosene trucks were driving around although the petrol/gas stands were closed for the most part. Convenience stores' charity boxes are absolutely full to the brim with not coins but big denomination notes. Up north they have started to build long-term temporary housing and many people are being moved out to better accommodation. Sadly though the number of dead is increasing to a very big number and a similar number is still unaccounted for. BUT people are still being found alive!

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Mothers,
who light up their surroundings,
under any kind of circumstances,
you are our hope!
You are, without a doubt, our sunshine!
Everyone is so thankful for
and is so encouraged by your warm beautiful smile.

Those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and live in accord with the Mystic Law can remain undefeated, even when faced with the most painful grief and sorrow, since they possess within them the indestructible life-state of Buddhahood."

http://www.sgi.org/news/h-relief/relif2011/soka-gakkai-president-visits-evacuees-in-sendai-relief-efforts-continue.html

Here in Tokyo today we have had less detectable earthquakes. Local communities have been praised by the local governments for using even less electricity! Trains have been reduced on every line to reduce energy consumption. Slightly fewer people are panic buying. We still have great worries about the nuclear power plant in Fukushima although there has been some positive change. Up north, sadly, the second phase of such a great disaster is beginning to kick in, disease, mental stress and the end of emergency fuel supplies. We battle on though!...

Here in Tokyo we have had a very cold day, not so bad as further north where energy supplies are running out, and this has caused a power surge which means that tomorrow we may have to experience two long power outages. Tokyo battles on though like elsewhere in Japan to keep the economy going.... No matter what we will come through!
Absolutely!...here's today's To My Friends...

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Even if we should meet with disasters and calamities,
they cannot destroy our hearts!*
The good fortune that we have accumulated thus far
is an integral part of our lives across the three existences
and across eternity.
(Firmly believing in this,) with strong and courageous hearts
let us advance on!

* From President Ikeda's message on March 16th, 2011 - Nichiren Daishonin writes that even if we should meet with disasters and calamities, they cannot destroy our hearts (cf. WND-2, 135). Nothing can destroy the treasures of the heart. Every adversity is but a trial for us to overcome so that we can attain eternal happiness. The Daishonin 's Buddhism, our practice of faith in the Mystic Law, enables us to transform all poison into medicine without fail.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 16th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 17th March Daily Enc.

* Here in Tokyo today we had our graduation ceremony and President Ikeda sent us a very long and in-depth message, most encouraging. Only those graduating, their parents and students living nearby came. We started the ceremony off with a minute's silence and then the whole building shook... as we continue to experience many earthquakes although less and less. Power outages are going on very irregularly in the suburbs to keep things going in central Tokyo.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I offer my sincerest condolences to those of you who have been affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunamis that struck north-eastern Japan five days ago (March 11th, 2011) and have left many people still missing and unaccounted for. I can only imagine the fatigue and exhaustion you must be suffering. My wife and I, along with the members throughout Japan and the world, are sending daimoku to you with all our hearts, earnestly praying for your health and well-being and that all Buddhas and bodhisattvas--the positive forces of the universe--will rigorously protect you.

"I wish to deeply thank those of you who are selflessly devoting yourselves to the rescue and relief efforts in the stricken areas. I also truly appreciate those of you who are supporting your communities as solid and reliable pillars during this difficult time. Takuboku Ishikawa (1886-1912), a renowned, youthful poet who hailed from Tohoku, the north-eastern region of Japan, declared: 'Helping one person is a far greater achievement than becoming the ruler of a country.' I, therefore, express my deepest respect and gratitude to all of you.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes that even if we should meet with disasters and calamities, they cannot destroy our hearts (cf. WND-2, 135). Nothing can destroy the treasures of the heart. * The latest on Soka Gakkai activities is available in English on
http://www.sgi.org/news/h-relief/relif2011/soka-gakkai-relief-activities-continue-in-northeastern-japan.html
Here in Tokyo the power outages have begun, shorter than announced although rather sudden. It is getting cold again and bad weather - snow and rain is expected in Tohoku. Mobile electric power stations have arrived in Tohoku so people are now able to recharge their mobile phones and use them! So if you have not been able to get through you might be able now but remember it will be crowded so if you know their mobile E-mail address you might be more successful. Fall-out levels from the nuclear power stations have dropped this evening. Earthquakes are still happening and this evening a strong one was felt that originated west of Tokyo in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka...no serious damage reports in yet. We are still getting a lot of mis-information from overseas sources in particular about the nuclear reactor situation and this is causing a lot of panic especially amongst the international community in Japan. If people wish to find out the latest, up-to-date information NHK - the Japanese government TV channel is operating "NHK World" on cable and satellite in English and there are other services in other languages on the radio also operated by NHK.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 14th March To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 14th - 20th March Words of the Week

* Here in Tokyo power outages are beginning to occur although "scheduled" ones are fortunately not occurring as people try to make an effort to conserve energy. Communication systems are improving. The number of strong aftershocks has also greatly decreased. But there is still a battle to re-establish some kind of "normal" life-style. Up north the battle goes on to find loved ones and to survive. The government though is doing a much better job than when the Kobe earthquake hit but it is being absolutely stretched to its limits with many many challenges.

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Ours is the practice of the greatest Law
that enables us to "change poison into medicine."

---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
Everyone is so encouraged by and so grateful for
the selfless dedication and actions
of our gallant youth members in Tohoku*
and all of our other Soka Gakkai young people,
helping in many ways those who are suffering from this great disaster.
Now is the time for you to uphold the spirit of "March 16th",*
and use your courageous voices as the young successors of kosen-rufu!

* Tohoku is basically the north eastern side of Japan where the earthquakes were strongest and where the tsunami hit.
*On March 16th, 1958, more than 6,000 youth attend a ceremony at the head temple where President Josei Toda passes responsibility for the spread of the Daishonin's Buddhism to all youth division members. (More details are in the "Successors" chapter of the Human Revolution, Vol. 12.)
