"I am praying that, no matter how troubled the times may become, the Lotus Sutra and the ten demon daughters will protect all of you, praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Worthy persons deserve to be called so because they are not carried away by the eight winds: prosperity, decline, disgrace, honour, praise, censure, suffering, and pleasure.'
- From 'The Eight Winds' (WND-1, 794).

"Faith in the Daishonin's Buddhism enables us to forge a solid and unshakable self. A life easily swayed by short-term gain or loss and the opinions of others is shallow and empty. Those who dedicate themselves unwaveringly to the great vow for kosen-rufu for the sake of people's happiness and the welfare of society are people of genuine substance.

"Please purposefully walk the path of your mission unaffected by the eight winds to the very end. When you do so, not only will you be protected by the positive forces of the universe, but you will also be able to perform a proud and victorious drama of human revolution and write a history of triumph that is free of all regret."

SGI Newsletter No. 8502, Living the Gosho: Words of Encouragement from SGI President Ikeda, (76) Forging a Solid and Unshakable Self, from the 24th April, 2012, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated 27th April 2012

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The aim of the Lotus Sutra is to enable all living beings to attain enlightenment. To make that possible in the Latter Day, the Daishonin uttered the mighty lion's roar of the daimoku, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, revealing the fundamental Law of the universe on April 28, 1253. From that time on, while battling great persecutions, he strove tirelessly to teach and convert all people.

"The Daishonin understood that the enlightenment of all people, including eminent priests and samurai warriors, could only be possible through having firm conviction in the Buddhist teachings and establishing unshakable faith based on selfless dedication to the Law.

"On September 21st, 1279, twenty farmers who were followers of the Daishonin were arrested on false charges of stealing rice in Atsuhara, Suruga Province (present-day central Shizuoka Prefecture), a region where the Daishonin's followers were facing a storm of harsh oppression. The incident is known as the Atsuhara Persecution.

"Those farmer-believers, however, remained unflinching in their faith, refusing to recant even when they were tortured. In the end, three central figures in the group—Jinshiro, Yagoro, and Yarokuro—who remained passionately committed to their faith to the end, were executed by the authorities.

"They were all farmers, not priests. In addition, they'd been practising this Buddhism for less than a year. Even so, they had been able to establish selfless faith that enabled them to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. Twenty-seven years after the Daishonin began to chant daimoku, they stood as proof that his vow to lead all living beings to Buddhahood could be fulfilled. The Daishonin's conviction, 'Can there be any doubt that . . . the great pure Law of the Lotus Sutra will be spread far and wide throughout Japan and all the other countries of Jambudvipa [the entire world]?' (WND-1, 550), was no doubt further reinforced by this.

"'The Law does not spread by itself: because people propagate it, both people and the Law are respectworthy' (GZ, 856)."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 25th April 2012 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 26th April 2012 Daily Enc.

Pres. Ikeda has an article in today's Japan Times...Toward 2015 -- calling for a Nuclear Weapons Convention
URL: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/eo20120425di.html

Might like to check it out. And here is today's TMF and more...

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun.

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The times that we live in are extremely turbulent.
That is precisely why it is important for us to
manifest the principle of "faith equals daily life,"
and live out each and every day to the fullest.
Not allowing carelessness or neglect to set in,
let us live safe and accident free lives.

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?"
(Reply to Kyo'o - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 412)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'What is called faith is nothing unusual. Faith means putting one's trust in the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions, and the heavenly gods and benevolent deities, and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as a woman cherishes her husband, as a man lays down his life for his wife, as parents refuse to abandon their children, or as a child refuses to leave its mother.'
- From 'The Meaning of Faith' (WND-1, 1036).

"Faith is one of the most natural expressions of the human heart. We can simply chant to the Gohonzon with the same spirit of devotion as one cherishes one's family or as a parent seeking to protect one's child.

"The members of the Young Mothers Group[1] are striving valiantly amid often challenging realities. It is our immediate environment, our daily life, that forms the stage on which we live out our drama of human revolution.
I hope that, today again, you will wisely and cheerfully shine as bright suns of happiness!"

SGI Newsletter 8496, Living the Gosho: Words of Encouragement from SGI President Ikeda. (74) Shine as Bright Suns of Happiness, from the 11th April, 2012, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated 24th April 2012

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 24th April 2012 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 25th April 2012 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The essence of our Buddhist practice
lies in the pledge made between mentor and disciple.
Those who remember this resolve and resolutely uphold it,
throughout their lives, are eternal victors.

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only a single sentence or phrase."

(The True Aspect of All Phenomena - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 386)
Selection source: Myoji no Gen, Seikyo Shimbun, April 24th, 2012

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Mr. Toda said: 'True greatness means that, even if you forget what you've done for others, you never forget what others have done for you and always do your utmost to repay your debts of gratitude. Therein shines the light of Buddhism. Such people radiate integrity, depth of character, generosity, and charm.'

"This, too, is the conclusion at which I have arrived after more than 60 years of Buddhist practice. I have seen many different people—people who have lived lives of gratitude, people who have been ingrates. Those who have a sense of appreciation and gratitude are loved and trusted by everyone and lead lives of tremendous fulfillment and satisfaction. Based on the Daishonin's teachings, it is clear that the inner radiance of those who embody true gratitude will imbue their lives with indestructible good fortune and benefit throughout the three existences."

By making the profound vow to achieve kosen-rufu,
let's joyfully engage in dialogue as the forefront of our activities.
Everyone has the potential for positive change. *
By reaching out to others with a courageous voice,
let's help as many people as possible to form a connection with Buddhism!

*"Everyone has the potential for positive change. Because we believe in the Buddha nature of each person, we don't prejudge others or write them off... When we help someone form a connection to Buddhism, they will change in a positive way without fail through the power of the Mystic Law... Courage is the key!" ---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Life is eternal, extending through the three existences of past, present and future; the sutras teach that we have been born in this world after having undergone the cycle of birth and death infinite times. From that point of view, at one time or another in the past, all men have been our father and all women have been our mother (cf. WND-2, 637). Buddhism sees us all as related and owing debts of gratitude to each other.

"The Daishonin indicates here that this is why we should wish for the happiness of all people. Since supreme happiness lies in attaining the life-state of Buddhahood, the best way to repay our debt of gratitude to others is to teach them Buddhism, the ultimate means for gaining enlightenment."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Gratitude entails knowing to whom we are indebted for our present life and circumstances and, by dedicating ourselves to our Buddhist practice, repaying that debt of gratitude. In another sense, repaying our debts of gratitude means elevating our state of life from one of being supported by others to supporting others and drawing the power to do so from the innermost depths of our being.

"In Sanskrit, there is the expression krita-jna, which literally means 'acknowledging (jna) what has been done on one's behalf (krita).' After one acknowledges and appreciates what has been done for one, the next step is to live a life dedicated to the welfare of others. This is the origin of the term 'repaying debts of gratitude' that appears in the Chinese sutras.

"Knowing and having appreciation for the fact that who we are now is the result of the actions and support of many others can powerfully affirm our sense of self and establish a solid foundation for our life, which creates the basis for ongoing personal growth.

"Repaying our debts of gratitude is the challenge of human revolution, the process by which we can develop our potential to the greatest possible extent."

"Anyone who teaches the principles of Buddhism to others is bound to incur hatred from men and women, priests and nuns. Let them say what they will."

(The Embankments of Faith - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 626)
Selection source: Kyo no Hosshin, Seikyo Shimbun, April 18th, 2012

Thursday, April 19th, 2012
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin discusses 'treating those who are less fortunate with pity and kindness [or compassion]' (WND-2, 636). We should always have compassion for the vulnerable or disadvantaged, he says, and show care and concern for them as if they were our own children (cf. WND-2, 636). The phrase 'less fortunate' does not imply that such people are in any way inferior, but only recognises the differences in social position, age, and experience that objectively exist and indicates that there are times when we should take the initiative in helping others.

"The Japanese word for compassion, jihi, is comprised of two characters which respectively represent the Sanskrit words maitri, meaning 'friendship,' and karuna, meaning 'pity' or 'sympathy.' The Nirvana Sutra, Nagarjuna's Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom, and other Buddhist scriptures define compassion as 'relieving suffering and imparting joy.' As such, Buddhist compassion constitutes true friendship and the wish for the happiness of one's friends.

"As the ancient Roman philosopher Cicero wrote: 'You might just as well take the sun out of the sky as friendship from life.'[1] Cicero also said that people should not 'want such a friend as they are unable to be themselves, and expect from their friends what they do not themselves give. The fair course is first to be good yourself, and then to look out for another of like character.'[2]

"Friendship and compassion, then, start with becoming a good friend yourself.

"Mr. Toda said: 'There is no stronger force in the world than compassion.' And he often taught us: 'Courage is the face of compassion.'

"Concerned about your friends' happiness, you actively reach out to them. You say what needs to be said. You think about your friends, do whatever you can for them, chant for them - truly, sharing the Mystic Law with others and spreading the teachings and principles of the Daishonin's Buddhism are actions of supreme courage and compassion."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 17th April 2012 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 18th April 2012 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all of my dear friends who have just started out in a new direction,
now is the time to develop your skills and enhance your capabilities.
Patiently, carefully and steadily,
even if it seems to take long,
continue to make every effort to improve yourselves
and prepare for the time when you can really show your strengths!
The most important thing to do now though,
is to establish a solid foundation in your life.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The first shi of the word shishi, or 'lion' [which means 'teacher'], is the Wonderful Law that is passed on by the teacher. The second shi [which means 'child'] is the Wonderful Law as it is received by the disciples. The 'roar' is the sound of the teacher and the disciples chanting in unison."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Although one may encounter them ten or twenty times in the course of a single day, one greets them courteously as though they had traveled a thousand or two thousand miles to see one, never showing them indifference' (WND-2, 636).

"This resonates with the spirit of discussion meetings and other SGI activities. If someone rushes in late, we should greet them warmly and thank them for making the effort to attend in spite of their busy schedule. The SGI must always be a realm of warmth and reassurance.

"Courtesy doesn't mean empty formality. It's our sincerity that counts, our respect for the other person, which manifests in our voice, our expression, and our actions.

"'The purpose of the appearance in this world of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, lies in his behaviour as a human being' (WND-1, 852), asserts the Daishonin. It would be no exaggeration to say, therefore, that the aim of Buddhism is to teach us the highest path of human behaviour, which is exemplified by the practice of respecting others demonstrated by Bodhisattva Never Disparaging[1] in the Lotus Sutra.

"Referring to the passage from the Lotus Sutra, 'If you see a person who accepts and upholds this sutra, you should rise and greet him from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha' (LSOC28, 365 [LS28, 324]), the Daishonin describes it as 'the foremost point [Shakyamuni] wished to convey to us' (OTT, 192).

"Underlying the teaching of treating one's friends with courtesy is the importance of respect for all people."

SGI Newsletter No. 8487, Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [36] "The Four Virtues and the Four Debts of Gratitude." Youth, Become Champions of Humanism Who Shine with the Supreme Philosophy of the Mystic Law!, from the January 2012 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translated April 6th, 2012

[1] Bodhisattva Never Disparaging: A bodhisattva described in the "Bodhisattva Never Disparaging" (20th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra. This bodhisattva, Shakyamuni in a previous lifetime, would bow respectfully to the four kinds of believers—monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen—greeting them with the words: "I have profound reverence for you, I would never dare treat you with disparagement or arrogance. Why? Because you will all practice the bodhisattva way and will then be able to attain Buddhahood" (LSOC20, 308 [LS20, 266–67]). However, he was attacked by arrogant people, who beat him with sticks and staves and threw stones at him. The sutra explains that his practice of respecting others' Buddha nature became the cause for him to attain Buddhahood.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 16th April 2012 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 16th - 22nd April 2012 Words of The Week

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, April 16th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
One of the most important tasks of a leader
is to be constantly on the alert, looking out for members
who are quietly and earnestly devoting their time and energy
behind the scenes to kosen-rufu.
Let's be absolutely sure to let them know
just how much we really do appreciate their efforts
and to praise them with words that really do come from the heart!

"Now, no matter what, strive in faith and be known as a votary of the Lotus Sutra, and remain my disciple for the rest of your life."

April 16th-April 22nd, 2012
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
Three cheers on the anniversary of the publication of the Seikyo Newspaper!*
To all of the deliverers of the Seikyo Newspaper
and all our other SGI publications
and the local reporters, our uncrowned heroes and heroines,
thank you all so very much, from the bottom of our hearts,
for your constant hard work and selfless dedication.
Today, again, let's strive to realize President Toda's dream
of having people throughout the world read our organizational newspaper.

*Seikyo Shimbun newspaper was first issued on April 20th, 1951.
**"Newspapers are supposed to be mirrors of society, but the average paper reports only on accidents and tragedies. I am well aware that the world is an unhappy place, but these papers do not suggest at all how to make it any happier.

"The Seikyo Shimbun, however, does write about how one can become happy. It also carries articles about how to view social phenomena from the perspective of Buddhism. There is no other newspaper like it. I, for one, would like to let people throughout Japan and, indeed, throughout the entire world, to read our paper. For this in itself would enable them to form a connection with Buddhism. In other words, it would be a form of propagation." (The Human Revolution, Vol. 11, "Osaka" chapter)
