[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 31st Oct. 2012 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 1st Nov. 2012 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's try to read the Gosho daily, even if only a single passage!
The wisdom of Buddhism is like the sun of hope
that nourishes our lives.
Having a seeking mind is what leads to victory.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Believe in this mandala with all your heart. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The unity of 'many in body, one in mind' doesn't impose restrictions on the individuality of each person. Everyone is free to be who they are, demonstrating their own unique personality, joining with others in a dance of mission for the sake of kosen-rufu. That's the unity of 'many in body, one in mind.'

"In contrast, 'many in body, many in mind' produces chaos, while 'one in body, one in mind' produces totalitarianism. 'Many in body, one in mind,' however, is different from either of these two. Each person strives freely for kosen-rufu in their own unique way—just as the cherry, plum, peach, and damson all bloom beautifully in the way that is true to themselves.

"It's like the stones in an old Japanese castle wall. Each has its own unique shape, and by combining those different shapes so that they all complement each other, an unshakable structure is built. That's what makes the wall strong and beautiful.

"Mr. Toda said that we must build a citadel of capable people. In the citadel of kosen-rufu, no one is unimportant or unnecessary. Everyone is a precious, talented individual. Every single person is indispensable. A great, indestructible citadel of kosen-rufu is built by sincerely valuing and combining the talents and gifts of each person."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Naturally, there are many different kinds of people. The organisation is a place for cultivating one's character and humanity, so I hope members will make wise and persevering efforts. Those efforts will all become lifelong treasures.

"Though unity is important, in the end it all comes down to the courage to stand up as an individual. Instead of focusing on what others are doing or not doing, we ourselves need to stand up, brimming with courage and hope.

"Mr. Makiguchi said: 'Give me a single lion over a thousand sheep.' The SGI shouldn't be a gathering of conformists. We need to build it into an organisation of individuals of lionhearted courage and fighting spirit."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27th Oct. 2012 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 28th Oct. 2012 Daily Gosho

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, October 27th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The most important thing in our Buddhist practice is the "heart".*
If we continue to challenge ourselves with a willing mind and positive attitude,
we will definitely make outstanding progress and
manifest enormous benefit in our lives.
Brimming with enthusiasm, let's take action now!

*"It is the heart that is important." - "The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra", WND-I, page 1000

Saturday, October 27th, 2012
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In this world, we owe four debts of gratitude. One who understands this is worthy to be called human, while one who does not is no more than an animal."

(Conversation between a Sage and an Unenlightened Man - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Volume 1, page 122) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, October 27th, 2012

Sunday, October 28th, 2012
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I once spoke with a leader who was having a hard time getting members together. I told him: 'If you yourself chant for kosen-rufu and for each of your members, and persevere in faith not only for your own happiness but also make efforts to share the Daishonin's Buddhism with others, your daimoku will draw people to you.'

"By steadily carrying out dialogues like this with one person after another, we were able to expand the young men's division membership from about 300 to 1,000 in the space of a year. That was also the result of the power of unity.

"When we aim to achieve a big goal, there are bound to be big obstacles, too. That's the time to encourage and help each other. Nichiren Daishonin writes that a transplanted tree will not be blown down if it has a firm stake or support to hold it up (WND-1, 598).[1] Even if a person faces some unbearable adversity or suffering, they will be able to keep on going if they are supported by the people around them. Conversely, even someone who is doing quite well can grow disheartened and lose their way if they are isolated and alone.

"One person solidly connecting to another—this is how we have built the vast, magnificent gathering of capable individuals that is today's SGI."

SGI Newsletter No. 8654, To My Young Friends - Leaders of a New Age. [6] Working Together in Harmonious Unity - Part 2 [of 3], from 3rd Oct., 2012, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated 24th Oct., 2012.

[1] The Daishonin writes: "When a tree has been transplanted, though fierce winds may blow, it will not topple if it has a firm stake to hold it up. But even a tree that has grown up in place may fall over if its roots are weak. Even a feeble person will not stumble if those supporting him are strong, but a person of considerable strength, when alone, may fall down on an uneven path" (WND-1, 598).

It's a leader's energy and enthusiasm that is the driving force to rock the era.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Organising or uniting efforts for the sake of a positive cause is the essence of an organisation or network dedicated to good like the SGI. It is a mistake to interpret unity or the idea of an organisation as something necessarily restrictive or oppressive. All organisations grow out of personal relationships or connections. Unity is ultimately built on mutual trust between individuals.

"As youth division members, for instance, such ties can be forged through listening sympathetically to someone's problems and helping them find a solution; participating in activities together; or even going out for a meal or coffee together.

"Please remember that SGI gatherings should also be enjoyable and harmonious.

"When we look at Nichiren Daishonin's behaviour, we can't help but be impressed by how much he cared about each person he interacted with. Even while in exile on Sado, as soon as he learned of disturbances breaking out in Kamakura and Kyoto, he asked to have news regarding the safety of a number of individual followers sent to him (cf. WND-1, 306).

"It is important for us to treasure each person we encounter and work together."

"In our dialogue, the eminent British historian Arnold J. Toynbee (1889–1975) said to me: 'We must not be defeatist, passive or aloof in our reaction to the current evils that threaten mankind's survival.'1]

"We are all Bodhisattvas of the Earth. We were born into this world in accord with our vow to contribute to the happiness of humanity. As such, we must not be indifferent to people and events around us or what is happening in society at large. If we were to live with such disinterest, we would no longer be bodhisattvas."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 24th Oct. 2012 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 25th Oct. 2012 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
A warm, invigorating greeting
opens the doors to people's hearts.
Let's strengthen our bonds of friendship and trust with those around us
by being the ones to initiate pleasant and refreshing interactions.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"I, Nichiren, have inscribed my life in sumi ink, so believe in the Gohonzon with your whole heart. The Buddha's will is the Lotus Sutra, but the soul of Nichiren is nothing other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo."

(Reply to Kyo'o - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 412)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, October 24th, 2012

Thursday, October 25th, 2012
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The great distances these persons traveled are indicative of their devotion' (WND-2, 1030). Let us always warmly greet and commend those who have travelled long distances out of their noble seeking spirit towards Buddhism, 'showing them the same respect we would a Buddha' (cf. LSOC28, 365)."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Gosho reminds us to:
"Employ the strategy of the Lotus Sutra before any other."*
If we chant, wisdom will well forth.
If we take action, our momentum will increase.
Let's win in all our endeavours through a positive change in our inner resolve!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"We must start by chanting with unity of purpose or shared commitment. In all my efforts, I chanted with the powerful resolve to win for the sake of kosen-rufu and my mentor. I also chanted for my fellow members who were striving valiantly alongside me. And even in leading the members in chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo three times, I earnestly strove to get everyone to chant together in solid unity for our goal.

"When people work together in this way, their combined power grows not by the simple arithmetic of 1 + 1 = 2, but exponentially to become 10 or 100. This positive multiplication effect is the wonder of unity in faith. Teamwork based on mutual trust and support is a source of tremendous momentum."

When we activate the very strongest of powers of faith and practice,
we manifest the boundless power of the Buddha and the Law.

and give it our all without hesitation.

Autumn, a perfect season to go out
and develop friendships with others.
When we leave the house,
let's always make sure to lock up
and double check all possible fire sources
in and around the house.
At the same time,
take extra care while on the roads.
Let's start each day by chanting sincere and earnest daimoku
focused on these points!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Unity does not mean forcing everyone into a single, uniform mold. Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'If the spirit of many in body but one in mind prevails among the people, they will achieve all their goals, whereas if one in body but different in mind, they can achieve nothing remarkable' (WND-1, 618). He says 'many in body,' not 'one in body.' It is important for us to respect each other's individuality, assist and support each other in a spirit of friendship and goodwill, and enable everyone to make the most of their unique qualities."

"We are all living in this troubled world together. How important it is to engage in frank and friendly dialogue with open hearts and minds! All people possess the Buddha nature. The sincere, courageous voices of Bodhisattvas of the Earth who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo cannot fail to resonate with the inherent Buddha nature of each individual.

"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, said: 'We're all human beings who each have our share of problems and sufferings. No matter how negatively others may respond, everyone in the depths of their lives is seeking the teaching of Buddhism. Once we've spoken to someone about the Mystic Law, we've helped them form an eternal connection to it. As a result, they'll definitely come to change for the better eventually.'"

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's hold our monthly discussion meetings full of joy and harmony
overflowing, as always, with a strong resolve for kosen-rufu.
Let's always be sure to show how deeply we appreciate those
who offer their homes as meeting places.
Let's also be considerate of the neighbours,
being careful not to cause them any inconvenience.
It is time now to embark upon the last lap of our endeavours
as we put the finishing touches on an amazing year!

"It is rare to be born a human being. The number of those endowed with human life is as small as the amount of earth one can place on a fingernail. Life as a human being is hard to sustain— as hard as it is for the dew to remain on the grass. But it is better to live a single day with honour than to live to 120 and die in disgrace."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It is those trying circumstances
that give us the "chance" to grow and develop.
Let's transform any negative karma we have into our missions!
With strong powerful daimoku,
let's break through even the most impossible of walls!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Nevertheless, even though you chant and believe in Myoho-renge-kyo, if you think the Law is outside yourself, you are embracing not the Mystic Law but an inferior teaching."

"We who believe in and chant the Mystic Law are ourselves the Treasure Tower. If we persevere in faith, we will attain a magnificent state of life endowed with the treasures of the universe.

"There is no retirement age in faith. There is no retiring from our mission. This is the way of life of genuine practitioners of the Daishonin's Buddhism."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 16th Oct. 2012 To My Friends and daily Gosho + 17th Oct. 2012 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
We have entered the season when the weather gets chillier.*
Let's make a conscious effort to prevent
catching a cold or any other infections.
One way to do that is to make a point of
gargling and washing our hands frequently.
It's also important to have a balanced rhythm of life
- sleep, food, exercise, etc..
I hope we will all keep our good health a top priority!

(*)Japan is beginning to enter the autumn season.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Steady, persistent efforts are the source for all victories in kosen-rufu. Let's advance—steadily, like flowing water.

"Those who keep making steady efforts are truly admirable. Those who always apply themselves earnestly to their studies or anything they take on are unbeatable.

"In leading our movement for kosen-rufu, it's important to burn with the spirit to share the Daishonin's Buddhism, and to keep a strong focus on the basics of morning and evening gongyo, meetings, personal guidance, and inspirational dialogue.

"Doing what needs to be done, and continuing to do so steadily and persistently—such conduct is truly respectworthy. Don't allow yourselves to be swayed by the ups and downs of the times.

"When a train leaves its tracks, it's a disaster. In the same way, we should stay on track in our daily Buddhist practice and keep moving forwards to our destination, come rain or shine. This is the best and most certain path."

SGI Newsletter No. 8648, On Our Shared Journey for Kosen-rufu, (18) Gratitude to Those Working Behind the Scenes, from the 17th June, 2012, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated 12th Oct. 2012

It has always been the SGI's proud tradition that "leaders"
take the initiative.
With unyielding determination,
let's open a great path to the future!
The time is right now to spur ourselves on,
brimming with a fresh challenging spirit.

"Were they not Bodhisattvas of the Earth, they could not chant the daimoku."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin writes: 'I say this not out of arrogance, but because I am deeply committed to the correct teaching' (WND-1, 302).

"Being deeply committed to the correct teaching gives us the strength to surmount all hardship and adversity.

"What does it mean to have 'deep commitment to the correct teaching'? Our commitment to uphold the correct teaching must be very deep and strong. The state of Buddhahood wells up in the lives of those who have such commitment and resolve. It is important to have the spirit to treasure the Mystic Law and the Soka Gakkai. This spirit will ignite the passionate wish to strive for kosen-rufu. Courage will well forth from within your life."
