--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The most important thing in practicing the Buddhist teachings is to follow and uphold the Buddha's golden words, not the opinions of others."

(On Practicing the Buddha's Teachings - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin,
Vol. 1, page 393) Selection source: "Suntetsu", Seikyo Shimbun, Feb
28th, 2015

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT -----
"The Daishonin underscores the importance of continuous and steadfast faith, saying: 'Carry through with your faith in the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 319).

"One cannot start a fire by striking a flint or rubbing sticks together if one stops before a spark is produced. One must continue without stopping until the fire is going. In the same way, the Daishonin teaches, it is crucial to remain constant and steadfast in one's daily practice of Buddhism, to prevent any opportunities for devilish influences to gain ground.

"He stresses that to overcome adversity at life's critical moments and manifest the fruit, or benefit, of Buddhahood, we must strive continuously and steadily in our Buddhist practice."

SGI Newsletter No. 9201, Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [63] "Earthly Desires Are Enlightenment," Establishing a State of Absolute Happiness, from June 2014 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 18th Feb., 2015

"'The word kudoku [benefit] means to attain Buddhahood in one's present form. It also means the purification of the six sense organs. You should understand that to practise the Lotus Sutra as the sutra itself directs is to carry out purification of the six sense organs.'
- From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 148.

"None of the efforts we make in our Buddhist practice are ever wasted. They all become a source of light that makes our lives shine brightly on the most fundamental level. They enable us to bring forth the inner strength to serenely overcome any difficulty, and to develop a vast and untrammeled state of being in which our lives can range freely over the entire universe.

"This is the benefit of the purification of the six senses and proof of our human revolution. Just like the fragrant lotus flower that blooms unsullied by the muddy water in which it grows, let us create a great flowering of happiness and victory in our lives amid the challenging realities of society."

"'Those who have faith in and practice the Lotus and Nirvana sutras should never seek some other place [as the pure land]. The place where those who have faith in these sutras are is the pure land.'
- From 'On the Protection of the Nation' (WND-2, 144).

"The ideal realm of happiness described in the sutras as 'the land of Eternally Tranquil Light' does not exist in some faraway place. It is something we build for ourselves in the here and now.

"Bewailing our environment changes nothing. As practitioners of the Mystic Law, we can positively transform our homes, our communities, and our workplaces, moving them in a direction that shines with hope and happiness.

"Holding high the banner of Nichiren Daishonin's ideal of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land,' let's produce a great flowering of friendship and good fortune in the place where we have vowed to work for kosen-rufu. For that place is the pure land, the Buddha land."

"Every field—be it the arts, sports, or academia—requires earnest application and all-out effort to be successful.

"Similarly, to attain Buddhahood, we have to apply ourselves in our Buddhist practice.

"What is the essence of our Buddhist practice?

"In a letter addressed to Shijo Kingo, a samurai disciple from Kanagawa, the Daishonin clearly states:

"The heart of the Buddha's lifetime of teachings is the Lotus Sutra, and the heart of the practice of the Lotus Sutra is found in the "[Bodhisattva] Never Disparaging" chapter. What does Bodhisattva Never Disparaging's profound respect for people signify? The purpose  of the appearance in this world of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, lies in his behaviour as a human being. (WND-1, 851–52)

"The highest form of Buddhist practice, as taught in the Lotus Sutra, is behaving in a way that is respectful of others."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 23rd Feb. - 1st March 2015 Words of the Week, 23rd Feb. Daily Gosho + 24th Feb. 2015 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shinbun and more

February 23rd - March 1st, 2015
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
It all starts with our mens and young mens division members
bringing about a transformation in society and the community
based on taking courageous action.
The Gosho says:
"To discard the shallow and seek the profound
is the way of a person of courage."*
Let's burn with a courageous spirit
and advance based on the powerful bonds
between the mens and young mens divisions!

* Gosho: On the Buddha's Prophecy - WND1, pg. 402,
"Shakyamuni taught that the shallow is easy to embrace,
but the profound is difficult. To discard the shallow and
seek the profound is the way of a person of courage."

Monday, February 23rd, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Just as all the different kinds of plants and trees come forth from the earth, so all the various teachings of the Buddha are spread by persons."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'The Law does not spread by itself: because people propagate it, both people and the Law are respect-worthy' (GZ, 856),[1] as the Daishonin says.

"No matter how supreme the Law is, without practitioners who will propagate it into the eternal future of the Latter Day, people will not be able to enjoy its benefits. Kosen-rufu advances only when there are individuals who teach and transmit the Mystic Law to others, in accord with the instructions of a correct teacher.

"'Following me [Nichiren]'—in the passage 'following me, you [Shijo Kingo], as a votary of the Lotus Sutra, have told others of this Law' (WND-1, 319), refers to the unity of mentor and disciple.

"Those who strive with the vibrant spirit of oneness of mentor and disciple are true votaries of the Lotus Sutra, true envoys of the Buddha. Even if they communicate to another just a single phrase of the sutra, their actions are infinitely meaningful and they will therefore receive immense benefit."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd Feb. 2015 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 23rd Feb. 2015 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, Feb 22nd, 2015
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Until we have achieved the goals we set out to achieve
let's steadfastly challenge them with dogged persistence!
It's in the midst of such constant daily efforts
that remarkable growth takes place.
Advancement equals victory!

Sunday, Feb 22nd, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"More valuable than treasures in a storehouse are the treasures of the body, and the treasures of the heart are the most valuable of all."

(The Three Kinds of Treasure

Seikyo Shimbun, Feb 22nd, 2015

Monday, Feb 23rd, 2015
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Mr. Toda often spoke about the purpose of life. It's quite common for us to establish goals based on our wishes for future happiness—our plan for the coming year, goals such as finding a job, getting married, finding a new home, and so forth. Mr. Toda said: 'True, these are all naturally goals we make in the course of living our lives, but viewed in terms of the highest goal, they are all no more than a means to an end. Put another way, if you don't have an ultimate goal, you can't establish the proper means.'[1]

"There is the ultimate goal of life, and then there are the various challenges we face along the way. The supreme and ultimate goal is the grand undertaking of kosen-rufu. Upholding and spreading Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the great Law for attaining Buddhahood, means us and others sharing supreme happiness. Once we are clear about our true purpose in life, we can create the best possible value from every challenge that appears along the way. When we are dedicated to realising the great vow for kosen-rufu, we can transform everything without exception into a source for creating something positive. This is the true meaning of 'earthly desires are enlightenment' and 'the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana.'"

SGI Newsletter No. 9201, Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [63] "Earthly Desires Are Enlightenment," What Is the Purpose of Life?, from the June 2014 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 18th Feb., 2015

Until we have achieved the goals we set out to achieve
let's steadfastly challenge them with dogged persistence!
It's in the midst of such constant daily efforts
that remarkable growth takes place.
Advancement equals victory!

"More valuable than treasures in a storehouse are the treasures of the body, and the treasures of the heart are the most valuable of all."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 21st Feb 2015 To My Friends & Daily Gosho plus 22nd Feb 2015 Daily Enc

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Our deepest appreciation and gratitude
to our ladies of kosen-rufu
who are always spreading hope in the local community.
Today yet again, may our women and young women of the SGI
keep safety as their top priority as we conduct our activities,
and advance cheerfully and harmoniously
on good terms with each other!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter, but winter always turns to spring. Never, from ancient times on, has anyone heard or seen of winter turning back to autumn. Nor have we ever heard of a believer in the Lotus Sutra who turned into an ordinary person. The sutra reads, 'If there are those who hear the Law, then not a one will fail to attain Buddhahood.'"

(Winter Always Turns to Spring
- The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 536)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Everyone inherently possesses the Buddha nature, which is the cause for attaining Buddhahood. But shrouded in delusion arising from innate darkness or ignorance, we ordinary people fail to bring forth that inner brilliance.

"When those who embrace the Mystic Law 'sow the seed of Buddhahood'—that is, talk about Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with others and plant the seed for enlightenment in their hearts—they touch people's lives and awaken the Buddha nature within them.

"In this way, the Daishonin established chanting and propagating the seven characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo—a practice for oneself and for others—as the method of practice for attaining Buddhahood in the Latter Day of the Law. There is no need to read or recite all the difficult-to-understand Buddhist scriptures or to master countless teachings. All we need to do is chant the seven characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Nichiren Buddhism is a teaching that all people can practise into the eternal future of the Latter Day of the Law."

SGI Newsletter No. 9201, Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [63] "Earthly Desires Are Enlightenment," Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Is the Fundamental Law for Attaining Buddhahood, from the June 2014 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 18th Feb., 2015
