— TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's give our very best possible support and encouragement
to all those members
who are selflessly devoting themselves
to achieving kosen-rufu.
"You can do it!"
"Let's challenge it together!"
With such words of warm encouragement,
let's chant together and advance together!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,'cannot be false in any way."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'No matter what may happen, you must not slacken in the least. You must raise your voice all the more and [speak intrepidly]' (WND-2, 597). In any undertaking, those who persevere with unflagging determination to the very end will succeed."

Try not to be flustered
or controlled by immediate happenings.
The Daishonin teaches us,
"Buddhahood lies in continuing faith."*
To continue our faith and practice is indeed
what enables us to attain absolute happiness**.

*"The Difficulty of Sustaining Faith" - WND-I, page 471
**President Toda used the term "absolute happiness" to describe the state of mind in which we can feel that life itself is a joy. If you persevere in faith, you will definitely come to experience this. (ref.: http://www.sgi.org/sgi-president/writings-by-sgi-president-ikeda/on-practice.html)

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27th May 2015 To MY Friends & Daily Gosho + 28th May 2015 Daily Encouragement

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's put our very best into preparing for meetings
so that all who attend can leave feeling
"Right, from here on I am going to give it my best shot!"
From our joyful gatherings
emerges an unstoppable momentum for victory!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"This passage refers to the great joy that one experiences when one understands for the first time that one's mind from the very beginning has been a Buddha. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the greatest of all joys."

(The Essential Passage
in Each of the Twenty-eight Chapters
of the Lotus Sutra, Prophecy of Enlightenment

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Courageous people are positive and cheerful. Gandhi often laughed, making those around him feel happy and brave.

"Courageous people don't give up. Gandhi was very patient, saying that 'Good travels at a snail's pace.'[1]

"Courageous people stand at the forefront. Gandhi believed that 'what is possible for one is possible for all,'[2] and took the lead himself in taking on great challenges.

"…Maybe some of you think you don't have courage. But all people do. Everyone, without exception, has courage inside them. The key is being able to draw it out.

"Everyone can do this by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion.' (WND-1, 412). Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo awakens the lion's heart inside you. When that happens, you'll feel wisdom, hope, and courage well up from inside."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Those who use violence may seem powerful, but it is actually the weapon of cowards. They use it because they are afraid of their opponents. Violence only causes more violence. This creates a vicious cycle, until both parties are deeply hurt. And when this happens between countries, it leads to continuous brutal wars.

"Engaging in dialogue and taking sincere action is the way to build peace. To carry out such efforts, we first need the courage to overcome our own fears. When our attitude changes, the attitude of the other person will change, too. Nonviolence is the 'weapon' of the brave."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
First, let us as leaders challenge ourselves
to break out of our shells.
The waves of courage and joy that are created by
using our initiative and setting an example to others
naturally inspire and motivate our fellow members.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The ten directions are the 'environment,' and living beings are 'life.' To illustrate, the environment is like the shadow, and life, the body."

(On Omens - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 644) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, May 24th, 2015

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"As our society ages, people are more earnestly seeking the right way to live and the path for making the final period of their lives more fulfilling and worthwhile. For this reason, it is becoming more important than ever to accumulate the treasures of the heart. And through our personal examples of dealing courageously with the sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness, and death that are an inherent part of human existence, we can impart precious hope and courage, as well as the conviction of faith, to our families and the young people who will succeed us."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 23rd May, 2015 To My Friends & Daily Gosho plus 24th May, 2015 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, May 23rd, 2015
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Daimoku chanted for our friends with a sincere heart
and actions that are taken with honest concern for them
definitely reach their hearts.
"I want to encourage that person somehow."
"I really want this friend to become happy."
With such a faithful heart and unwavering sincerity,
let's develop trustworthy relations with as many people as we can!

Saturday, May 23rd, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"When we have this mandala with us, it is a rule that all the Buddhas and gods will gather round and watch over us, protecting us like a shadow day and night, just as warriors guard their ruler, as parents love their children, as fish rely on water, as trees and grasses crave rain, and as birds depend on trees. You must trust in it with all your heart."

(On Upholding Faith in the Gohonzon - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 624)
Selection source: SGI President Ikeda's guidance, Seikyo Shimbun, May 23rd, 2012

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin sternly warns that even if one calls oneself a disciple of Nichiren, one mustn't be of 'two minds,' practising both the Nembutsu and the Lotus Sutra (cf. WND-1, 82). He seeks to drive home to Hyoe Shichiro the importance of establishing unshakable faith in the correct teaching.

"'Two minds' refers to the confusion and weakness that prevents one from being able to believe solely or fully in the Lotus Sutra.

"Buddhism is rigorous. There can be no compromise in its faith and practice. One must always remain completely committed to it, and not be of two minds.

"Being of two minds is having weak faith that can be affected by things and events around us. Being unable to denounce the 'enemies of the Lotus Sutra'—that which constitutes slander of the Law—out of fear of opposition, or leaving things up to others, hoping they'll do the hard work, are both cases of being of two minds, in today's terms."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd May, 2015 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 23rd May, 2015 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, May 22nd, 2015
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Buddhism teaches the principle of
"cherry, plum, peach or apricot blossom".*
Each and every one of us has a unique mission
that only we ourselves can fulfil.
On the stage of our very own lives,
let's perform victorious dramas
as celebrated actors and actresses!
Let's play the leading role
with the never give up spirit!

*Each of us is as unique as a cherry, plum, peach or apricot blossom, like Nichiren states in the Gosho. Cherry blossoms are cherry blossoms and plum blossoms are plum blossoms. Accordingly, you must bloom in the way that only you can. Without a doubt you possess your own jewel, your own innate talent inside of you. The question is: How can you discover that talent? The only way is to exert yourself to the very limits of your ability. Your true potential will emerge when you give everything you have to your studies or sports or whatever you are engaged in.

The most important thing is that you get into the habit of challenging yourself to the limit in this way. In a sense, the results you obtain are not so important . . . But the efforts put forth by those who make a habit of pushing themselves to the limit will in time bear fruit. They will distinguish themselves from others without fail. They will bring their unique talent to shine. (Excerpted from Discussions on Youth)

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Whatever trouble occurs, regard it as no more than a dream, and think only of the Lotus Sutra."

(Letter to the Brothers - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 502)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, May 22nd, 2012

Saturday, May 23rd, 2015
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"As the Daishonin writes in his letter, devilish functions can enter the lives of high-ranking Buddhist priests, parents, or siblings and, through them, attempt to cause practitioners to discard their faith in the Lotus Sutra (cf. WND-1, 81). This is an unchanging formula that holds true today as well.

"Such negative influences deviously seek out people's weaknesses and pretend to be acting out of concern as they try to obstruct the attainment of Buddhahood. We must never allow ourselves to be swayed by the whisperings of such destructive negative influences and lose our faith. Once we move away from the realm of kosen-rufu, we also veer off the fundamental path to attaining eternal happiness. We end up depriving ourselves of benefit, growth, and victory. This is just how frightening "evil companions"[1] can be."

SGI Newsletter No. 9244, Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [66] "Encouragement to a Sick Person," Strong Faith That Is Impervious to Negative Influences, from the September 2014 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released 19th May, 2015

[1] Evil companion: Also, evil friend or evil teacher. One who causes others to fall into the evil paths by misleading them in connection with Buddhism. An evil companion deludes others with false teachings in order to obstruct their correct Buddhist practice.
