[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] Aug. 31st - Sep. 6th 2015 Words of the Week, Aug. 31st Daily Gosho & Sep. 1st Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

August 31st - September 6th, 2015
--- WORDS OF THE WEEK ---
The Daishonin encourages us,
"(Strengthen your faith)
day by day and month after month."*
Let's advance by chanting daimoku
with unyielding determination!
Let's brim with strong life force and
manifest bright clear wisdom!
This is how to develop a good rhythm
towards achieving victory and success.

*"Strengthen your faith day by day and month after month. Should you slacken in your resolve even a bit, devils will take advantage." - "On Persecutions Befalling the Sage", WND-I, page 997

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In this chapter Shakyamuni Buddha revealed the foremost point he wished to convey to us. The Buddha preached the Lotus Sutra over a period of eight years, and eight characters sum up the message that he has left behind for living beings in this later age, the Latter Day of the Law. It is in the passage that reads, 'Therefore, Universal Worthy, if you see a person who accepts and upholds this sutra, you should rise and greet him from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha', particularly the eight characters that make up the end of the passage, 'you should rise and greet him,' etc."

(Chapter Twenty-eight:
Encouragements of the Bodhisattva Universal Worthy
- The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 192)

Seikyo Shimbun, August 31st, 2015

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Mr. Makiguchi began practising Nichiren Buddhism at the age of 57. In his efforts to share the Mystic Law with others, he travelled throughout the country, visiting Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Shin'etsu, Kansai, Chugoku, Kyushu, and Shizuoka.

"He declared: 'Dialogue is the only way to truly communicate with people on questions about life. Isn't [the Daishonin's treatise] "On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land" presented in the form of a dialogue?'

"Even when he was imprisoned by the Japanese militaristic authorities, Mr. Makiguchi courageously spoke about Buddhism to the guards in prison and the prosecutors interrogating him, endeavouring to persuade them of the rightness of the Daishonin's teachings.

"In his last letter from prison, we find him saying: 'I am avidly reading the philosophy of Kant,' and 'It is only natural that the three obstacles and four devils should have assailed me; it is just as the sutra states.'

"Such fearless courage is the noble spirit of Soka. Let us also speak to others about Buddhism with the same dauntless confidence as Mr. Makiguchi. Let us share our experiences, our conviction, and our joy, assuring others that they possess within them the life state of Buddhahood; that chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the fundamental Law of life, enables us to connect with the universe; and that the Mystic Law is the source of tremendous life force."

Where people are united,
there is joyful advancement.
If we pull together in what we are chanting for,
there is no obstacle that cannot be overcome.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'The words "four sides" [of the treasure tower] stand for birth, ageing, sickness, and death. We use the aspects of birth, aging, sickness, and death to adorn the towers that are our bodies. And when, while in these four states of birth, ageing, sickness, and death, we chant Nam-myoho- renge-kyo, we cause them to waft forth the fragrance of the four virtues [eternity, happiness, true self, and purity].'
- From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 90.

"Birth, ageing, sickness, and death are inescapable aspects of human existence. The teachings of Buddhism, which were expounded to help people overcome the sufferings inherent in the human condition, set forth the way by which all people can attain a state of life imbued with the four noble virtues of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity.

"Those who align their lives with the Mystic Law have nothing to fear. For those of us who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, ageing, sickness, and even death become precious jewels adorning the treasure towers of our lives; they become joy-filled adventures.

"Let us make even greater efforts to spread this fragrant breeze [of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] that can give supreme hope to all humanity!"

"The Daishonin writes: 'Can anything exceed the sun and moon in brightness? Can anything surpass the lotus flower in purity?' (WND-1, 186). --- DAILY GOSHO ---
"All disciples and lay supporters of Nichiren should chant
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim. This spiritual bond is the basis for the universal transmission of the ultimate Law of life and death."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I have discussed with Kansai members on numerous occasions the significance of the phrase from the 'Life Span' (16th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, 'where living beings enjoy themselves at ease' (LSOC16, 272).

"True ease is a condition in which life is inherently enjoyable, and fulfillment and joy well up from the depths of our being. It is a state of absolute happiness that cannot be destroyed, no matter what circumstances we encounter. The source of this immense life force is chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for ourselves and others. Those who make daimoku their top priority will never be defeated. They are guaranteed to triumph over every obstacle and truly enjoy all that life brings."
