September 28th-October 4th, 2015
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
One-to-one dialogue is the very driving force
for the advancement of kosen-rufu.
Let's make every possible effort to make time
and try to inspire each member with personal encouragement.
At the same time let's cultivate our friendships with others
and help them also to form a connection with Buddhism!

"The verse section of the 'Life Span' (16th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra that we recite every day in gongyo contains this passage: 'Jewelled trees abound in flowers and fruit / where living beings enjoy themselves at ease' (LSOC16, 272). Our movement for kosen-rufu is an unceasing endeavour to sow the seeds of the Mystic Law, foster the growth of jewelled trees of capable individuals, and spread rich and fertile fields of peace and peaceful coexistence, brimming with the joy of life, all across the globe."

"There is an SGI-USA women's division member who moved from Hiroshima to the United States after the war, having married an American serviceman. In those early years, she continued to practise Nichiren Buddhism steadfastly in spite of her husband's fierce opposition, enthusiastically sharing her Buddhist practice with others. Though struggling with economic hardship and family discord, she sincerely reached out to support and help one individual after another, driven by the conviction: 'I have come to America in order to meet this person.' Today, her entire family and the almost 400 households she has helped receive the Gohonzon are all enjoying wonderful benefits. She has also helped foster many youthful successors. 'I can't stop myself from sharing the joy of faith,' she says with a beautiful, beaming smile. 'I want to introduce this Buddhism to everyone I meet.'

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27 Sep 2015 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 28 Sep Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, September 25th, 2015
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's carefully listen to the opinions of women
who abound with sensitivity.
It's the sharp keen wisdom of ordinary people
whose lives are based on what goes on in the local community
that are the strength behind eternal development.

Friday, September 25th, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Concerning the 'peaceful' practices of the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law and the practices carried out by Nichiren and his followers now in the Latter Day of the Law, you should understand that, when one practises the Lotus Sutra under such circumstances, difficulties will arise, and these are to be looked on as peaceful' practices."

(Chapter Fourteen: Peaceful Practices, Five important points
- The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings,
page 115)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin",
Seikyo Shimbun, September 25th, 2015

Saturday, September 26th, 2015
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Buddhism is the Buddhism of sowing. Sowing the seeds of the Mystic Law in the troubled age of the Latter Day of the Law represents the unprecedented challenge of shining a light on and reaching out even to those whose hearts may seem like barren wastelands where no seeds could take root.

"The Daishonin declares: 'Only the seven characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are the seed for attaining Buddhahood' (WND-2, 804). Everyone, no matter what their circumstances, can manifest the state of Buddhahood in their lives by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. That is why we sow the seeds of the Mystic Law, the seeds of ultimate happiness. We continue to sow these seeds in our own hearts and those of others. We refuse to be shaken by even the harshest destiny, confidently proclaiming that faith in the Mystic Law assures us of attaining Buddhahood and urging our friends to walk the path to happiness alongside us."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Throughout the four seasons, I continue to chant for all of our admirable members who work in the farming and fishing industries. [1] Growing up in a family of seaweed farmers as I did, I am deeply aware of how challenging and arduous their professions are.

"Food is life itself. We need to express our gratitude anew to all those engaged in the sacred labour of producing our food, persevering dauntlessly in the face of natural disasters and the vagaries of the weather as they exert themselves in supporting and fostering life, the most precious treasure of all.

"Citing an analogy to the fact that, though crops may be early or late, depending upon conditions, they are all harvested within the year of planting, Nichiren Daishonin assures us: 'If votaries of the Lotus Sutra carry out religious practice as the sutra directs, then every one of them without exception will surely attain Buddhahood within his or her present lifetime' (WND-2, 88)."

SGI Newsletter No. 9298, Our Pride and Joy: Sowing and Fostering the Seeds of Happiness, from the October 2015 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released Sep. 18th, 2015

[1] October is the founding month of the Soka Gakkai's Farming and Fishing Division, which was originally established as the Farming and Fishing Communities Division in October 1973. The division's name was changed in December 2011.
