A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"I'm determined to make every possible effort to help
the growth of our newer members,
who respectively have great noble missions to fulfil,
so that they can become even more capable than I am."
Such a strong prayer and sense of responsibility
is what opens up the way to a great future.
Together, let's all grow in our faith and practice!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"If a person cannot manage to cross a moat ten feet wide, how can he cross one that is a hundred or two hundred feet?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The 'Emerging from the Earth' (15th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra describes the emergence of Bodhisattvas of the Earth 'as numerous as the sands of sixty thousand Ganges Rivers' (LSOC15, 252)—that is, infinite in number. Each of these bodhisattvas is also described as having 'a retinue equal to the sands of sixty thousand Ganges Rivers' (LSOC15, 252). 'Retinue' here means companions or fellow travellers through life, people who have a past connection to the Buddha's teachings. Each Bodhisattva of the Earth has an unending capacity to teach countless individuals about Buddhism, encourage them, and inspire them to stand up and work for kosen-rufu.

"A single drop of water can lead to the creation of a river as mighty as the Ganges. Similarly, each individual has limitless potential and their life has incomparable worth.

"Our members in India have deep conviction in this truth. That is why hope-filled encouragement has spread from one person to another and so many capable Bodhisattvas of the Earth with an awareness of their mission have emerged there.

"This is the direct and unchanging path to kosen-rufu. As Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'At first only Nichiren chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, but then two, three, and a hundred followed, chanting and teaching others. Propagation will unfold this way in the future as well. Does this not signify "emerging from the earth"?' (WND-1, 385)."

"Members of an SGI youth delegation who were invited to India last November (2015) by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) sent me joyful reports saying that wherever they went, they received a warm welcome and felt the Indian members' dynamic, youthful commitment to expand our movement for kosen-rufu.

"Why has the membership in India grown so much? When asked about this by the visiting youth delegation, the local members responded with pride that they all viewed kosen-rufu as their personal mission and took action to realise it; no one left it up to someone else to do.

"Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) stated: 'The greatest [people] of the world have always stood alone.'[1] I wish to declare that our members striving for kosen-rufu with a stand-alone spirit are the greatest and most respect-worthy people in the world."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 28 Jan 2016 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 29 Jan Daily Encouragement

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, Jan 28th, 2016
--- TO MY FRIENDS ---
Please be careful of
seasonal illnesses like colds and influenza!
By taking ample common sense measures
such as wearing a mask* in crowded places,
washing our hands frequently
and gargling when we come inside,
let's protect ourselves from sickness.
I hope that we can spend each day wisely
continually staying on top of our health!

* It's the norm in Japan to wear a mask if you have a cold or any other illness that you can pass on to others, at the same time it's popular to wear one in crowded areas when it is possible to pick up an airborne virus.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I hope you will cheerfully and wisely broaden your circle of friends year after year, in your youth and throughout your life. The key to doing that is to treasure old friends and make new ones. Friendship is the noblest and most beautiful thing in the world. It embodies all the victory and success to be had in life.

"Those who value friendship are true global citizens and creators of peace.

"Friendship exists between countries, too. Nations can have relationships based on politics and economy. Though such interactions are important, they are, by themselves, fragile, as powers and interests of countries can clash. That's why fostering friendship between nations on a grassroots level is vital. Ties forged through cultural and educational exchange between individuals, citizens, and youth of different countries are the foundation for unshakable peace."

"Commenting on the spirit that spurred the Chinese people to resist Japanese military aggression during World War II, a person who participated in the struggle articulated the confidence they shared as follows: 'The saying goes that when three people unite, they are as clever as Zhuge Liang.* Our people possess infinite creativity. We have thousands and tens of thousands of Zhuge Liangs. We have Zhuge Liangs in every town and village.'

"This holds true for the Soka Gakkai, too. There are Zhuge Liangs of kosen-rufu in every district. The wisdom and unity of Zhuge Liangs is found throughout our organisation. That's what makes us strong. We thoroughly discuss things together, devise the best way to proceed, and create the causes for victory. The essence of Buddhism pulses in wisdom and unity. . . .

"Let's advance in high spirits! Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion' (WND-1, 412). Lions are fearless, no matter what happens. I want each of you to become a lion, a champion who smiles in the face of adversity and triumphs over everything, with the confidence that you can successfully take on any challenge."

In terms of holding positions in the Gakkai organisation, always be aware that the time will come when your juniors will succeed to the post you're in at the present.
