-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's be determined to
have a truly meaningful time
during this holiday period,
free from any accident or incident.*
Let's be sure to drive safely (when and if we drive)!
At the same time, whenever we go out,
let's double check all fire sources
and be sure to lock up,
physically pointing to each lock point!

*In Japan, the week known as "Golden Week" with four national holidays between April 29 and May 5 has just started and many people like to go somewhere during this period.

"Even if you think you're hopeless and incapable, I know you're not. I have not the slightest doubt that each of you has a mission. No matter what others may say, I will always respect you and believe in you. No matter what your present situation is, I am absolutely certain that a wonderful future awaits you.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho April 29th, 2016 + Daily Enc. April 30th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shinbun and more.

Friday, April 29th, 2016
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Come on let's get out and about!
To the exact extent that we meet with others
and engage in meaningful conversation,
our kosen-rufu movement expands.
Let's start off
with a resolute prayer and chanting.

Friday, April 29th, 2016
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Now for the past twenty-eight years, since the fifth year of the Kenchō era [1253], cyclical sign mizunoto-ushi, the twenty-eighth day of the fourth month, until the present, the twelfth month of the third year of the Kōan era [1280], cyclical sign kanoe-tatsu, I, Nichiren, have done nothing else, but have laboured solely to put the five or seven characters of Myoho-renge-kyo into the mouths of all the living beings of the country of Japan."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"When we look at the lives of famous people, we find that many had a far from perfect youth. For example, Sir Winston Churchill was well known for failing in school. Mahatma Gandhi, too, was a mediocre student. He was shy, timid, and found it difficult to talk to others. Albert Einstein also didn't do well in some of his school subjects—though, of course, he was brilliant at mathematics. Wilhelm Röntgen, who discovered X-rays, was expelled from technical college because his classmates falsely accused him of something they themselves had done.

"But what did all these individuals have in common in their youth? They never gave up on themselves. People who get poor grades, who are bullied, who are betrayed by their friends, who fail, who have to deal with such problems as illness or poverty, are more likely to be able to understand others' feelings and have deep insights into life. The important thing, therefore, is not to be defeated. If you can do that, whatever suffering you have had to endure will definitely contribute in a positive way to your growth in the future.

"You must love, respect, and treasure yourself. You'll be miserable if you allow yourself to be swayed by the prejudices, passing trends, and contradictions of society. Never forget to be who you are, to be true to yourself."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 28th April, 2016 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 29th April Daily Encouragement

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, April 28th, 2016
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Having lofty ideals
helps to create a greater self.
Let's never forget the pledge
we made in earlier days
and strive steadfastly,
even more so,
along our chosen path!
Doing so is certain
to make us true victors in life.

Thursday, April 28th, 2016
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"All the characters in which the Lotus Sutra is written represent living Buddhas. But because we have the eyes of common mortals, we see them as characters. It is like the example of the Ganges River. Hungry spirits see the waters of the river as fire, human beings see them as water, and heavenly beings see them as amrita. The waters are the same in all cases, but each type of being sees them differently, according to the effects of its karma."

"'If only you chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, then what offence could fail to be eradicated? What blessing could fail to come? This is the truth, and it is of great profundity. You should believe and accept it.'
 - From "Conversation between a Sage and an Unenlightened Man" (WND-1, 130).

"Everything starts with prayer. Prayer in Nichiren Buddhism is not some vague wish, but a strong and profound vow to achieve our goals. It is the key to developing an indestructible state of life.

"Through the power of daimoku, of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can transform our karma and bring forth good fortune and benefit in our lives. Embracing the true and profound teaching of the Mystic Law, let's keep pressing forwards. If we earnestly continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, then no matter what difficulties we may encounter, we will definitely win in the end."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27th April, 2016 To My Friends & Daily Gosho plus 28th April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, April 27th, 2016
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To inherit the responsibility for taking action
and to propel a way into the future.
These are the essential qualities and hallmarks
of true successors.
Youth,
courageously hold aloft the banner of Soka.
Now is the time for us to create a surge
of fresh new waves of expansion!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Therefore, I say to you, my disciples, try practising as the Lotus Sutra teaches, exerting yourselves without begrudging your lives! Test the truth of Buddhism now!"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The past is is the past; the future is the future. Look to the future and keep moving forwards, telling yourself: 'Everything starts from today—it starts from now, this minute, this moment!' This is the essence of Nichiren Buddhism, the Buddhism of 'true cause.'[1]

"True success or failure in life will not be apparent until you reach your 40s or 50s.

"Don't allow your immediate situation to make you lose hope or panic. Though you may do something you regret, have problems, or make mistakes, the future is long. Don't be a fainthearted person who frets or despairs over every little thing.

SGI Newsletter No. 9388, The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 2: Human Revolution, Chap. 17: Message for Youth [Part 2 of 4], 17.6 Keep Moving Forwards, from the January 2016 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 22nd April, 2016

[1] True cause: Also, mystic principle of the true cause. Nichiren Buddhism directly expounds the true cause for enlightenment as Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, which is the Law of life and the universe. It teaches a way of Buddhist practice of always moving forward from this moment on based on this fundamental Law.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 26 April To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 27 April Daily Encouragement

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
I urge the Young Women's
and Women's Division members
to honour the
"home by 10 p.m. after Gakkai activities!" guideline.
Being casual or blase about this,
thinking that a little bit over is alright,
creates the room for accidents to occur.
Exercise diligence in following the Daishonin's words:
"..be even more careful than usual."*

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Living without working to improve oneself leads to stagnation and, ultimately, self-defeat.

"There are those who fail to work on their own growth and development, using only their wits and wiles to get by. But the closing chapter of their lives is often empty and sad. They end up regretting the choices they made. They wish they could go back to their youth and do things differently.

"There is a time for everything. If you have every material comfort and the freedom to do anything you please from the time of your youth, you are actually rather unfortunate. It's important that you forge inner strength and develop yourself in your youth. With such a foundation, it's only natural that once you reach a certain age your life will blossom, and you'll enjoy both spiritual and material rewards. This is the correct path in life."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] April 25th - May 1st, 2015 Words of the Week, April 25th Daily Gosho + April 26th Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

April 25th - May 1st, 2016
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
May all living beings have happiness,
peace and security!
This lofty spirit with which
Nichiren Buddhism was established
is being practised by SGI members
all over the world.
The Daishonin states,
"But still I am not discouraged."*
With such a steadfast and unyielding spirit,
let's challenge ourselves to engage in dialogue
with as many people as we possibly can!

*"Because I have expounded this teaching, I have been exiled and almost killed. As the saying goes, 'Good advice grates on the ear.' But still I am not discouraged. The Lotus Sutra is like the seed, the Buddha like the sower, and the people like the field." - "The Essentials for Attaining Buddhahood", WND-I, page 748

Monday, April 25th, 2016
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The Buddha wrote that one should become the master of one's mind rather than let one's mind master oneself."

"The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) wrote: 'Let where you are going, not where you come from, henceforth be your honour! Your will and your foot that desires to step out beyond you—let them be your new honour!" [1]

"His message is that everything starts from now! Always look to the future! Buddhism also teaches the spirit of focusing on the present and the future.

"A meaningful life…is built not by focusing on the past, but on how you live from now on. That positive, forward-looking attitude is the key to greatness and victory."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's praise with the utmost of respect
those members who are selflessly devoting themselves
to achieving kosen-ruru behind the scenes!
Our kind heartfelt words of appreciation and
warm thoughtful considerate attitude towards them
will definitely become the driving force for our advancement.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"There may be some members who are not able to attend as many meetings as they would like right now. There may be others who have distanced themselves from the organisation for a long time. But they are all Bodhisattvas of the Earth who have embraced the Mystic Law, being 'blessed with great good fortune from past existences' (LSOC27, 356). The seeds of Buddhahood sown in the fields of their hearts cannot fail to sprout, grow, and flower. That is why we must chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with strong faith and send waves of 'the greatest of all joys' (OTT, 212) into the hearts of our fellow members, why we must persevere in our sincere efforts to visit and encourage them.

"Soka experts in the art of encouragement don the 'robe of gentleness and patience' (cf. LSOC10, 207) and display the compassionate spirit of warmly embracing and accepting everyone.

"Even if someone doesn't immediately make a fresh determination to stand up in faith and participate in SGI activities, there's no need to be impatient. Based on the principle of 'three thousand realms in a single moment of life,' your every prayer and action, and the message you impart, will function to produce future changes."

SGI Newsletter No. 9370, Joining in the Joyous Dance of Kosen-rufu, from the April 2016 issue of Daibyakurenge, the Soka Gakkai monthly study journal, translation released 18th March, 2016.
