* In the "Former Affairs of the Bodhisattva Medicine King" (23rd) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, the Buddha states: "After I have passed into extinction, in the last five-hundred-year period you must spread it [the Lotus Sutral abroad widely throughout Jambudvipa [the entire world] and never allow it to be cut off" (LSOC23, 330).
