--- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ---

"'On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime':

"Your practice of the Buddhist teachings will not relieve you of the sufferings of birth and death in the least unless you perceive the true nature of your life. If you seek enlightenment outside yourself, then your performing even ten thousand practices and ten thousand good deeds will be in vain. It is like the case of a poor man who spends night and day counting his neighbour’s wealth but gains not even half a coin.

(WND-1, 3)

“Only by polishing your lives and bringing forth the Buddha nature from within, can you establish an indestructible state of absolute happiness. But if you don’t truly believe you are an entity of Myoho-renge-kyo, you won’t develop real self-confidence. Instead, you’ll end up seeking the path to happiness outside yourselves.

“And what happens then? You’ll be swayed by others’ opinions or your circumstances. You’ll feel elated one moment and discouraged the next. You’ll begin to compare yourselves to others in everything—social status, position, financial situation, personality, appearance and so on. If you think you’re even slightly better off, you may develop a false sense of superiority or excessive pride, unable to see yourselves objectively. On the other hand, if you think you’re falling short, you’ll become dejected, self-critical or even lose all motivation.

“Worse still, if you care too much about how others see you, even petty words or actions can deeply wound you. ‘They said something so cruel,’ ‘They don’t appreciate me.’ ‘They are so unkind.’ Such thoughts lead to resentment and bitterness. You may even resort to flattery or manipulation to gain approval.

“At the root of envy and resentment lies an inherent delusion—a failure to believe, despite practising Nichiren Buddhism, that your life itself is the treasure tower, that you are a Buddha. Instead, you seek happiness outside yourselves. That delusion allows devilish functions to take hold.

“Every one of you is a wonderful, shining Buddha. You have a unique and precious mission. Rather than comparing yourselves with others, cherish your own lives and keep polishing your true, authentic self.

“Just as you are a Buddha, so is everyone around you. So please respect and value your fellow members to the utmost. That is the essence of unity in the Soka Gakkai.”
