and to take courageous action with a firm resolve.
Let's all stand up and take action now, and be victorious!

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27th Jan. To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 28th Jan. Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, January 27th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The only limitations that exist in our lives
are the ones we ourselves create!
When we determine to change our way of thinking,
then there is absolutely no obstacle that we canot overcome.
Today again,
let's take one courageous step forwards
(and break those seemingly impossible limits we have set!)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Work and employment serve as a form of proof that one is necessary to society. Even if it does not bring particular recognition or fame, work can be a source of fulfillment and pride, realised through the steady pursuit of the role that is ours and ours alone to play. For people who have lost their homes and possessions in a disaster and are dealing with the strains of life as evacuees, the loss of work not only represents a severing of the economic lifeline but can further undermine the spiritual grounding necessary to move forwards.

"For this reason I believe that we all share the responsibility to support people in rebuilding their lives, enabling them to regain a sense of hope, and in particular, for those who have been compelled to change their place of residence or work, to rediscover places where they can feel a sense of belonging."

"'With the appearance of this teaching [the great Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo], all the teachings advocated by the scholars and teachers of Buddhism during the Former and Middle Days of the Law will be like stars after sunrise, or an awkward apprentice beside a skilled craftsman. It is stated that, once this teaching is revealed in this era [of the Latter Day of the Law], the Buddha images as well as the priests of the temples built in the Former and Middle Days will all lose their power to benefit people, and only this great teaching will spread throughout the entire land of Jambudvipa [the entire world]. Since all of you have a bond with this teaching, you should feel reassured.'
- From "Letter to Misawa" (WND-1, 896).

"Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is the Buddhism of the sun that will illuminate the entire world into the eternal future. It is a teaching of limitless hope that enables us to surmount the challenges of any time or age.

"We were born with a profound mission and a deep karmic connection to this great Buddhism. Let's walk the path of victory with confidence and joy, together with our fellow members around the world, holding high the banner of the Mystic Law."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 24th Jan. To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 25th Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The basis for developing capable people
is for us to undergo our own human revolution.
Let's always, from the bottom of our hearts, have the utmost of respect
for those who are newer to this faith,
and help foster them into becoming even more capable than ourselves.
Let's healthily compete with each other to develop and surpass ourselves!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, the Daishonin is recorded as saying: 'And now the place where Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-
renge-kyo, 'whether . . . in mountain valleys or the wide wilderness' [LSOC21, 316], these places are all the Land of Eternally Tranquil Light. This is what is meant by 'the place of practise [for the attainment of Buddhahood]' (OTT, 192).

"Since that's the case, we need to work for kosen-rufu wherever we are, expand a network of trust and friendship, and demonstrate actual proof of happiness and victory. Wherever our life takes us, we should think of ourselves as having been sent there by the Buddha to carry out kosen-rufu."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It's the victories within our district that decide the future of kosen-rufu.
By pooling everyone's wisdom,
let's all advance in one mind!
Let's build an ideal solidarity in our district.

Let's take the utmost of care when it snows
and let's watch out for those icy roads!
In particular we need to look out for our senior citizens,
let's take every possible measure we can to
protect them from slipping and falling.
As there is more risk at night when it's dark,
let's also make sure to remind each other
to be absolutely careful when going out.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"When you lose your livelihood, the common tendency is to feel depressed, and if you have no apparent future prospects, you can easily become apathetic and despairing.

"If you're able at such a time to remain filled with life force, energised, and ready to face the challenges before you, you can impart tremendous courage to others. Courage spreads with a ripple effect. In addition, when Gakkai members are positive and energetic, actively taking on life's challenges, they demonstrate proof of the power of Buddhism to others. The power of religion is manifested in the way people live their lives.

"In many cases the technical skills and specific experience that you acquired when working... will probably not be transferable when you have to change jobs and begin a new occupation. That makes having a vibrant spirit of challenge, vigor, perseverance, and optimism all the more important. Companies aren't interested in hiring people who are negative and apathetic.

"In other words, the tougher the situation, the brighter the 'treasures of the heart' will shine in a life that has been rigorously forged. ...the economic situation may be bad, but the 'treasures of the heart' cannot be destroyed. They don't disappear. And we can build anything with those 'treasures of the heart.'

"Adversity is a magnificent opportunity for each of us to demonstrate the greatness of our Buddhist faith and practice. Whether we win or lose is determined from now. All that matters is winning in the end. And our Buddhist practice ensures that we can win.

"Please tell those who are struggling with such difficulties, 'You can overcome whatever challenges you're facing right now. You can definitely win. I am looking forward to hearing your victories.'"

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's all do our utmost to avoid catching a cold
or any other seasonal infection!
Let's protect ourselves by being practical
such as frequently gargling, washing our hands and wearing a mask.*
It's also important to keep an eye on the air quality and humidity when indoors.
Using our wisdom and common sense, let's forge ahead in the very best of health!

* In Japan people often wear masks to avoid spreading any germs they might have or when travelling in crowded places. It also is becoming quite a fashion statement in some cases - pictures on the masks, colours, different styles, etc..

Something uncommon also occurs when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood. At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The bond between the common people is the great force
that will break through the despair and darkness of the times.
Never shut yourself off from others!
Never allow your friends to suffer in isolation!
Now is the time to spread the great solidarity of Soka.

"The Daishonin writes: 'Now, however, we have entered the Latter Day of the Law, and the daimoku that I, Nichiren, chant is different from that of earlier ages. This Nam-myoho-renge-kyo encompasses both practice for oneself and the teaching of others' (WND-2, 986). When we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo ourselves and teach others to do the same, both we ourselves and those we lead to the practice can realise the dreams we cherish as individuals for the future. This is the consistent, unchanging Soka philosophy and path to happiness."

"I am praying that, no matter how troubled the times may become, the Lotus Sutra and the ten demon daughters will protect all of you, praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It is not "someone" else who will do it!
Rather, it is we ourselves, as "leaders",
who need to take the initiative in developing
good relations with others.
Let's take a courageous step forwards today
and try to meet as many new faces as we can
and begin to help them form a connection with this Buddhism.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"When we look from time to time at a person's face, we find him or her sometimes joyful, sometimes enraged, and sometimes calm. At times greed appears in the person's face, at times foolishness, and at times perversity. Rage is the world of hell, greed is that of hungry spirits, foolishness is that of animals, perversity is that of asuras, joy is that of heaven, and calmness is that of human beings."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) declared: 'If one is not to stagnate, one must be constantly changing, regenerating oneself, growing young again.'[1] A person who continues to grow and develop is called a youth.

"Inazo Nitobe (1862–1933), the renowned Japanese diplomat and educator who was born in Tohoku 150 years ago this year, asserted: 'If you wish to stay youthful, hold lofty ideals.'[2] It is especially important that we keep growing, day after day, aiming for the realisation of the highest ideal of kosen-rufu. Each step in that process will shine as a golden achievement."

To all of the Shirakaba-kai members (nurses group),
the trailblazers of the century of human life,

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'From the indigo, an even deeper blue'—~this is a well-known expression in the East that refers to a student or disciple surpassing their teacher.

"Alluding to this principle, Nichiren Daishonin writes in one of his letters to the lay nun Ueno, the mother of Nanjo Tokimitsu: 'The Lotus Sutra is like the indigo, and the strength of one's practice is like the deepening blue' (WND-1, 457). To personally endeavour to keep advancing with more vitality and enthusiasm today than yesterday, this year than the last, is the hallmark of a genuine leader of kosen-rufu."
