Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The activities of the SGI can be said to be the "good among all good"*
Let us consider ourselves really fortunate to be members of such an
organization (dedicated to world peace)
Let us never pause in our efforts to advance proudly and confidently,
on our great mission towards achieving world wide kosen-rufu!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It has been one of history's great tragedies that people, failing to
recognise the enormous power they possess, have often been subjugated, or
divided and set against one another. In contrast, the mentor-disciple
relationship of the Soka Gakkai is dedicated to inspiring, uniting, and
guiding people in a positive direction. There is no more lofty human bond
than that shared by mentor and disciple.

"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, encouraged members who
were facing adversity: 'You should be proud that you possess within yourself
the same life-state as Nichiren Daishonin. Maintain a noble spirit and
triumph in life. Never belittle yourself.'"

"The aim of Buddhism is to enable all human beings to awaken to, tap, and
actively manifest the incomparably noble Buddha nature within them. As the
Daishonin says: 'One becomes aware of the Buddha vehicle [the Law] within
oneself and enters the palace of oneself [the highest life-state of
Buddhahood]. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is what is meant by entering the
palace of oneself' (OTT, 209). This is the essence of a Buddhism that is
truly open to all people and illuminates the world with the light of hope.

"Our faith and practise--
as ordinary people
who refuse to accept defeat--
are smiled on by the Buddhas
and protected by the heavenly deities."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Nov. 27th + Daily Enc. Nov. 28th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, November 27th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all who are in positions of leadership
or who are responsible for leading or conducting various activities in the
SGI:
It is said that lack of preparation or negligence is one's greatest enemy!
True to these words, let us always chant earnestly and sincerely
for the absolute safety of all of our precious members.
Let us take every possible action so that we can be sure to
protect our members from any type of accident or incident!

Lotus Sutra would go unanswered"

"Guiseppe Mazzini (1805-72), a leader in the movement for Italian unity and
independence, observed: 'Great ideas create great peoples.' The confusion
caused by false ideas and doctrines has inflicted terrible damage on the
people's spirit, promoting widespread feelings of powerlessness and apathy
on the one hand, and encouraging rampant prejudice and egotism on the other.
Our effort to 'establish the correct teaching for the peace of the land' is
a spiritual struggle to transform this bleak situation.

"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, Nichiren Daishonin
states: 'Generally speaking, the term 'Thus Come One' refers to all living
beings. More specifically, it refers to the disciples and lay supporters of
Nichiren' (OTT, 124). A Thus Come One or Buddha is not some sort of
supernatural being far removed from us. We, ordinary people, who uphold the
Daishonin's Buddhism, dedicated to the highest good, are Thus Come Ones or
Buddhas."

concern of Buddhism is always the human revolution of a single individual. A
single individual initiating an earnest struggle for kosen-rufu can create
dynamic and all-encompassing change. That is why it is so important to
encourage and support those striving on the front lines, no matter how
inconspicuous their efforts might seem."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It is important that we plant deeply the roots of
our faith and practise in the place where we each have our own
unique missions to fulfil.
Those who strive, patiently and consistently,
to build a solid foundation in life will
ultimately triumph, without fail.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Everything starts with dialogue; it is the first step towards fresh
value-creation.

"The 'Expedient Means' (2nd) chapter of the Lotus Sutra--part of which we
recite morning and evening in gongyo--is a paean to life that begins with
the Buddha embarking on a dialogue with his disciples: 'At that time the
World-Honoured One calmly arose from his samadhi and addressed Shariputra'
(LS2, 23). The Lotus Sutra describes an assembly that takes place on the
ultimate level of life and embraces the entire universe, starting on Eagle
Peak and moving to the Ceremony in the Air expounded in the 'Life Span'
(16th) chapter [a portion of which we also recite in gongyo]. When we sit in
front of the Gohonzon, we ourselves become part of that assembly. Gongyo is
a ceremony of dialogue between teacher and disciples, between the Buddha of
the Latter Day of the Law and us. It is a ceremony watched over by all
Buddhas and heavenly deities of the ten directions and three existences.

"In a letter to the lay nun Myoho, the Daishonin writes:

"When with our mouths we chant the Mystic Law [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo], our
Buddha nature, being summoned, will invariably emerge. The Buddha nature of
[the heavenly deities] Brahma and Shakra, being called, will protect us, and
the Buddha nature of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas [throughout the universe],
being summoned, will rejoice. (WND-1, 887)

"There is no more powerful sound than the chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
No force can obstruct the advance of our movement as we chant and spread the
Mystic Law, cheerfully reaching out to others in dialogue based on the
shared commitment of mentor and disciple."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's maintain close communication with one another especially in regards
to information and reports on our activities.
Let's respond speedily, first and foremost.
This has always been one of the great traditions of the SGI.
Swiftness is what best develops trust between people.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"How noble are those who base their lives on the unparalleled philosophy of
the Mystic Law. All without exception who practise as the Buddha teaches
will attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. Nichiren Daishonin writes:

"'In the case of rice plants, there are three types--those that ripen early
in autumn, those that ripen in a middling time, and those that ripen
late--and yet all are ready to be harvested within a single year. In the
same way, although persons [who follow the Buddha way] fall into three
different categories of superior, middling, and inferior [capacity], all
alike, within the space of a single lifetime, can come to the realization
that they themselves are identical and in no way at variance with all the
Buddhas, the Thus Come Ones. (WND-2, 79-80)'

"Buddhism also teaches that there are five types of vision, or five types of
eyes--the physical eye, the heavenly eye, the wisdom eye, the Dharma eye,
and the Buddha eye. The Daishonin writes: 'These five types of vision are
naturally acquired by one who upholds the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 683).

"He also declares: 'The votaries of the Lotus Sutra, men and women alike,
are all Thus Come Ones' (OTT, 83). This is an affirmation that all of you
who are working selflessly for kosen-rufu are Buddhas.

"And elsewhere he says: 'All those who keep faith in the Lotus Sutra are
most certainly Buddhas, and one who slanders a Buddha commits a grave
offence (WND-1, 756). You are people worthy of the greatest respect. Anyone
who ridicules or harasses you will reap stern karmic effects. From
everything that I have witnessed in the course of my long practise, I can
attest to this with utmost conviction."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Hooray to all of our noble and esteemed fellow SGI members!
I put my palms together in the utmost appreciation and respect
for everyone's selfless dedicated and painstaking efforts.
I pray for glory and victory for all our members
who share both the good times and the bad times
and who strive together to achieve kosen-rufu.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have
destined you to become my disciple at a time like this.
Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this
truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those persons who had
heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha
lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,'
cannot be false in any way."

"Different times in life require different responses. There are times when
we'll need to wisely save our energy. There are times when we'll need to
strive with all our dedication and sincerity. There are times when we'll
need to rest to prevent exhaustion. I hope you will always proceed with
wisdom. But no matter what the situation, never lose sight of kosen-rufu and
the path of faith--promise me that. I'm counting on you!

"When we challenge ourselves in trying times, we can accumulate tremendous
benefit. Benefit is manifested in many different ways. Sometimes undergoing
a trial that seems more like punishment opens the way to happiness. It's
like surgery or an injection--they may hurt, but they can restore your
health. Even in the most desperate of circumstances, if we challenge
ourselves through strong faith, we can gain true great benefit. This is the
profound teaching of the Daishonin."

"Having good friends is all the Buddhist way."*
Let's do our very best to cultivate friendships with as
many people as we possibly can!
A good friend is indeed the most valuable treasure we
can have in life.

*Ananda, one of Shakyamuni Buddha's closest disciples,
once asked him: "It seems to me that by having good
friends and advancing together with them, one has already
halfway attained the Buddha way. Is this way of thinking
correct?"

Shakyamuni replied, "Ananda, this way of thinking is not
correct. Having good friends and advancing together with
them is not half the Buddhist way but all the Buddhist
way."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's be very careful not to be deceived by
bank-transfer scams or any other form of fraud.*
Let's never be careless or overconfident
(in the case you do receive such types of phone calls).
If you sense that something doesn't sound right or something is unusual,
first of all, before taking any action,
check things out and confirm the facts carefully and
don't hesitate to consult someone whom you can trust and who is
knowledgeable about such things.

* In Japan, it was reported that between January and
August, 2008, 21.3 billion yen was swindled out of people throughout the
country through bank-transfer scams.

Such incidents include the "It's me" scam, con artists typically telephone
people and pretend to be a relative in trouble who desperately is in need of
money.

In more recent methods, the fraudsters pretend to be calling from
a social insurance office or tax office. They tell their
potential victims that they will receive refunds for
overpaid public health insurance premiums or taxes. They
then dupe the victims into making money transfers at an ATM.

"Buddhism is concerned with winning. This is a point that Nichiren Daishonin
made emphatically clear. The law of cause and effect operating within our
lives is very strict. We cannot fool ourselves; we know in our hearts when
we have won or when we have given in to defeat. Those who win through faith
plant the cause to attain Buddhahood deep within their beings. When we
earnestly challenge ourselves and are able to declare with all our hearts,
'I have won!' the tremendous good fortune we gain as a result will adorn our
lives eternally. This is the life-state, the strength, and the life-force of
a Buddha.

"Those who succumb to self-defeat cannot accumulate good fortune. They
create the cause to feel regret in their lives. That is why it's so
important to win, to triumph in our lives. That is the direct way to
experience the true power of Buddhahood within us. There is no greater joy
than this."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
For the sake of society,
for the sake of kosen-rufu,
let's make every effort to develop our young people's abilities and talents!
From within our very own local community,
let's create a wave that really helps develop lots of capable people.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Our minds are like the water. Faith that is weak is like muddy water, while
faith that is brave is like clear water."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Speaking in an easily comprehensible way that reaches people and touches
their hearts--this is a vital point for a successful dialogue and an
important quality for leaders to have.

"Also, when you're standing in front of a large crowd, you don't need to
shout at them or speak in an exaggeratedly forceful manner. Look at your
audience with genuine warmth and smile at them when you speak. Your spirit
should be to inspire everyone to join in and work harmoniously alongside
you. When you shout or speak too forcefully, you may think you're
demonstrating your impassioned commitment, but all your audience sees is a
frightening grimace!

"The great Japanese educator and reformer Yoshida Shoin (1830-59) instructed
his students on how they should address others: 'In your everyday
conversations with people, speak in a tone closer to that of a gentle,
refined woman. That way, at a crucial moment, you can make your voice ring
out with powerful vigour.' He urged them to smile at people warmly. Given
the stern visage with which Yoshida Shoin is often depicted in portraits,
many of you must be astonished that he would say such a thing! But truly
accomplished leaders put people at ease and impress them with their warmth,
gentleness, and consideration. You need to have a generous and open spirit
that makes people feel able to say anything to you, even to complain.

"I would especially like the leaders of the youth division, on whose
shoulders the future will rest, to take this to heart."

to fill the gap we held over "Words of the Week." All the best and hope you
have a GREAT week!

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
Let's give a refreshing, cheerful greeting that opens people's hearts.
It is so important that we look out for and respect our neighbours.
Through a sincere attitude and thoughtful actions,
let's develop good relations with more and more people
and help create trust between each other.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Everything begins with changing our own attitude or mind-set. This applies
equally to forging solid unity. If members of an organisation are constantly
at loggerheads, always blaming and criticising each other, there will never
be any unity among them. Since organisations are made up of individuals, we
are bound to encounter all kinds of people. At times, there may be cases
when our personalities just don't mesh with certain individuals. That is why
unless we do our human revolution, we will not be able to forge bonds of
shared purpose with each other, rising above various differences. In 'The
Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life,' the Daishonin urges his followers to
unite 'in the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all
differences among themselves [free of distinctions of self and other] to
become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim' (WND-1,
217).

"It is only natural that people will have different personalities and
temperaments. But that doesn't mean that because people are different from
us, we should discriminate against them or exclude and reject them. The
important thing is that we respect each other and accept each others'
differences, with an all-embracing heart that is free of discrimination or
distinctions of self and other."
