"'This faith is the basic requirement for entering the way of the Buddha.'

"The daimoku of the Lotus Sutra—Nam-myoho-renge-kyo—is 'the very heart of all the eighty thousand sacred teachings of Buddhism and the eye of all the Buddhas' (WND–1, 141). Faith is the key to unlocking its boundless and immeasurable benefit.

"Those who put daimoku first are never deadlocked. They turn every problem into prayer. They transform it into a source of hope and victory and greatly expand their state of life. Even illness will not be an obstacle for them, the Daishonin declares (cf. WND–1, 412).

"Today again, let's forge ahead on the great path leading directly to the attainment of Buddhahood in this lifetime as we chant to spread the Mystic Law far and wide."

"My" February Campaign* 

is about to begin.
Let's start off with 

  some serious chanting,
second let's take good care 

  of the neighbours
and third let's share with others

our personal experiences 

of our faith and practice.
Let's make history together 

and break through the limits 

within ourselves!

*In the beginning of 1952 on Toda's instruction, Ikeda became chapter advisor to the Soka Gakkai's Kamata Chapter in Tokyo and led an effort that resulted in 201 new households joining during the month of February. This represented a breakthrough, far surpassing the monthly membership increases achieved by any chapter until then and became known as the historic February Campaign. It marked a turning point after which the Soka Gakkai's progress towards achieving its membership goal of 750,000 households accelerated rapidly.

from right where we are.

let's initiate taking action!

*Buddhism teaches the principle of cause and effect in our lives—that our present situation is the effect caused by our past actions. Nichiren Buddhism, however, teaches the "true cause"—that we are not bound by our past but are always embarking from the present moment into the future.

'The actions you have taken, then, are the very height of filial piety and concern.'

"The beneficial power of the Mystic Law is eternal. Here, the Daishonin assures us that our deceased love ones who chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo while alive attained Buddhahood, just as they were.

"The light of the daimoku we chant for our deceased family members will definitely reach them, whether or not they embraced faith in Nichiren Buddhism in life.

"United by the Mystic Law, we will serenely advance together on the path of eternity, happiness, true self and purity, savouring joy in both life and death.

"Let's honour the memory of our departed loved ones in the best possible way by helping others form positive connections with Nichiren Buddhism and accumulating the treasures of the heart in our lives."

"The wisdom of the Buddha is boundless and immeasurable. When we fuse our lives with the Gohonzon [through chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo], we can limitlessly tap the 'water of wisdom' from the wellspring within us.

"Referring to this passage in The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, the Daishonin says: 'The word "think" indicates that the Buddha thinks of the Buddha nature inherent in all living beings' (OTT, 160).

"The daimoku we chant for ourselves and others is the sound and rhythm of our unswerving faith in the Buddha nature of every member of the human race and our commitment to awaken one person after another to that enlightened potential with courage, sincerity and perseverance."

Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo' (WND–1, 4).

"At that meeting, I spoke about how to create a model organisation, reaffirming that, just as the Daishonin teaches in this passage, the key lies in doing gongyo and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. And in response to my call, everyone challenged themselves to help their fellow members develop a solid daily practice of gongyo and daimoku. Three years later, Katsushika had grown to three general blocks."

"Throughout the Osaka campaign of 1956 as well, I made the Daishonin's writings my foundation, knowing that I could only attain victory by studying the principles of leadership for winning in every kind of struggle or challenge taught by the Daishonin.

"When spirits faltered in the face of some daunting obstacle, I shared the Daishonin's encouraging words that we should pray 'as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood or to obtain water from parched ground' (WND–1, 444). This reignited everyone's lionhearted resolve to make the impossible possible.

"Declaring that we could realise our great vow without fail if we were united in purpose, I shared the Daishonin's words: 'If the spirit of many in body, but one in mind prevails among the people, they will achieve all their goals, whereas if one in body but different in mind, they can achieve nothing remarkable' (WND–1, 618)."

"It was, Shin'ichi concluded in his poem, because Melos had triumphed over his inner weakness. He also pointed out that once one takes a sad step in retreat, 'then comes the logic of self-justification / that leads him to retreat still further,' and that 'in the idle ease of one who has cast off friends / there is a pain of remorse that will last until the end of life.'* In his closing lines, he wrote:

I would remember this:

'Only the race of truly great valour.

can destroy the obsessions of suspicion and scheming

and bring about the ultimate flowering of human truth.'** 

"... Don't let life's temptations lead you astray! Don't let your own laziness defeat you! Keep running admirably as long as you live on the path of the vow and mission you have chosen!"
