The foundations for kosen-rufu are rock-solid, thanks to the efforts of those heroes and heroines who have worked so diligently behind the scenes to support our activities.
"..it is said that where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward."*
Let's make sure to wholeheartedly acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of those who may never stand out in the limelight, but who often work silently unnoticed behind the scenes.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 27th + Daily Enc. Sep 28th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, September 27th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Meeting people is what kosen-rufu is all about.
Let's summon up the courage and confidently share this
Buddhism and its philosophy with as many people as we can!
The conversations we have with others are all great opportunities
for us to sow the seed of Buddhahood in their lives.

*"Even if one should fall into hell, because one has heard the Lotus Sutra, which leads to Buddhahood, with this as the seed, one will invariably become a Buddha."
- "How Those Initially Aspiring to the Way Can Attain Buddhahood
through the Lotus Sutra", WND-I, page 882

"It is stated that 'the seeds of Buddhahood sprout as a result of conditions,
and for this reason they preach the single vehicle.'"

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Nevertheless, even though you chant and believe in Myoho-renge-kyo, if you think the Law is outside yourself, you are embracing not the Mystic Law but an inferior teaching."

Each of us must become a person who can state with unshakable conviction: 'I will not be defeated!'"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 26th + Daily Enc. Sep 27th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"The 'great vow' refers to the propagation of the Lotus Sutra."*
A life that is dedicated to achieving such a great and wonderful
purpose is absolutely indestructible.
Let's all advance proudly and boldly along the noble path of kosen-rufu.

*"Ongi-kuden" - Gosho Zenshu, page 736, The Record of the
Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 82

** A vow in Buddhism could be described as the power to sever the chains of karma, to free oneself from the fetters of the past, and to forge a self that can look with hope to a new future. In other words, the power of a vow enables us to develop ourselves through the Buddha's teachings, to take charge of our own future direction based on a solid sense of self, and to keep on making efforts towards that end. It could be said that making a vow is the fundamental principle of change.

"Making positive causes
in our noble undertaking day after day
assures us of accumulating
boundless good fortune
that will flow on forever to our successors.

"Nichiren Daishonin promises us that 'where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward' (WND-1, 907). All too often in the world, devious, dishonest schemes seem to prevail while sincere, honest efforts go unrewarded--a contradiction that has outraged the hearts of people of conscience in all times and places. However, the
Daishonin's Buddhism, which teaches that unseen virtue draws forth visible reward, guarantees that those who have worked the hardest behind the scenes will ultimately reap the greatest benefit and blessings. This is a strict and impartial principle. Unscrupulous individuals who inflict suffering on good, decent people cannot escape
the uncompromising workings of the law of cause and effect. In the end, they will be filled with misery and regret."

Let's make sure to hold the type of meetings where
every person who attends finds them both meaningful and beneficial and
feels: "I'm really glad I came!"
By chanting daimoku with all our heart and having a really effective and well thought out plan,
let's adorn each meeting we hold,
the noble gathering of Buddhas,
with great success!

"Gazing towards the sun of hope,
let's live with the fresh
and vibrant life-force
of time without beginning
again today.

"The renowned German author and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a master in the art of living a life of youthful vigour to the very end. In one of his poems, he wrote:

"If you wish to build a good life for yourself,
you must not grieve over the past,
even should you suffer loss,
conduct yourself as one born anew.

"Those who strive with all their might to fulfil their life's noble mission are free of regret, self-pity, or complaint. They press forwards day after day with a freshness of spirit and newborn resolve.

"Because the sun of time without beginning shines in the hearts of all who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we have been able to keep forging ahead towards kosen-rufu with dauntless hope, no matter what happens. This is the pride of our eight-decade Soka movement."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 24th + Daily Enc. Sep 25th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, September 24th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Kosen-rufu is a noble undertaking where we strive to
fearlessly and unhesitatingly use our voices and words
to communicate about the greatness of this philosophy!
The Gosho teaches us to hold a feeling of rejoicing in our hearts*
when we teach others about Buddhism.
Let's create a warm breeze of heartfelt conversation
in our local community!

* "Someone asked me the following question. Is it true that, even though members of the clergy or lay believers may not understand the exact meaning of the text of the Lotus Sutra, if they accept and uphold the entire sutra, or one volume of it, or the four most important chapters, or the verse section of the "Life Span" chapter,...or, if they do not do any of these things, but see others doing these things and have just a slight feeling of rejoicing in their hearts or are happy that the Lotus Sutra is being spread throughout the country - is it true that, if they carry out even one
of these acts, they will not be held accountable for their worldly offences, but will be aided by the benefits of the Lotus Sutra...
...
I would answer as follows...judging from what is expressed in the Lotus Sutra and Nirvana sutras and the commentaries by T'ien-t'ai and Miao-lo, if people happen to put their faith in the Lotus Sutra and do not in any way slander it, then they will not, as a result of other offences they might commit, fall into the evil paths of
existence."
Gosho - On Reciting the Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra, WND-2, Page 211,

Thursday, September 24th, 2009
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"(In the light of the above points, this shows,) my followers, that you had better cut short your sleep by night and curtail your leisure by day, and ponder this! You must not spend your lives in vain and regret it for ten thousand years to come."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"At times, Mr. Toda's guidance could be very strict. He used to say: 'Only someone who has given their all for a cause can understand another who has done the same.' I now keenly understand what he meant by those words.

"Selfless dedication is the heart of the Soka Gakkai. The complacent attitude that someone else will take care of the hard work can have terrible consequences. We have to do it ourselves. We have to set an example through our own actions. Only when we've done that can we call on others to do the same. But if leaders don't take action themselves and just selfishly push all the hard work onto others, they will undermine the very foundations of our organization."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 23rd + Daily Enc. Sep. 24th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The offering of daimoku by people
who strive wholeheartedly in propagating the Mystic Law,
is the highest form of memorial that can possibly be conducted
for the sake of our ancestors and dear ones who have died.*
Let us advance together with each other throughout eternity,
sharing the bonds of happiness across the three existences!

* Japan has a tradition of conducting memorial services as well as visiting graves of ancestors during the period of the spring and autumnal equinoxes.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) frequently emphasised the importance of making a new start every day. By living each day with a totally fresh attitude and resolve, we can liberate ourselves from lingering disappointment and complaint. By taking one steady step forward after another, we can lead a noble life of mission. This is the way of Soka, the path of mentor and disciple dedicated to the Mystic Law.

"Mr. Toda said: 'Everything we experience in our lives comes to have meaning. We realise that nothing, not the smallest thing, is ever wasted. This is the great benefit of the Mystic Law.' 'Nothing, not the smallest thing, is ever wasted'--how true Mr. Toda's observation is! From the perspective of faith, everything has a meaning.

"Soka Gakkai activities are a noble form of Buddhist practice in which our thoughts and actions are turned to others' happiness and well-being. At times, we may encounter insults and abuse in society, just as the Daishonin predicts in his writings. But please remember that those who have done their best and challenged themselves to the fullest are strong."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 18th + Daily Enc. Sep 19th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, September 18th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's do our utmost to help the development of our young people so that they can become even more capable than we are
and can carry on the noble task of achieving kosen-rufu.
The more earnest we chant daimoku for their growth
and the more sincere we encourage and support them,
the higher our own life conditions will become.

will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It was in May last year (2008) that Argentine human rights activist and Nobel Peace laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel and his wife Amanda Guerreño came to Japan....

"I first met Dr. Pérez Esquivel in December 1995 (in Tokyo). He had at that time expressed a desire to continue our dialogue through correspondence or other means. On the day of his return to Argentina, he sent me a message to the following effect: 'When someone I trust is being attacked, insulted or persecuted, I will say nothing to that person. But when that person stops being criticized, I express my
dissatisfaction to them because it means they have given up their fight.' He also shared a wonderful quote from the great novel Don Quixote by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616): 'The dogs are barking. That means we are riding forth.' Interestingly enough, this same quote has been cited to me by many of my friends from
around the world, including Club of Rome Honourary President Ricardo
Díez-Hochleitner, Brazilian pianist and composer Amaral Vieira, and former Chilean Ambassador to Japan Demetrio Infante Figueroa. Hearts that share the same convictions resonate.

"The Daishonin writes: 'The three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat.' (WND-1, 637). In the modern age, we who uphold the Mystic Law are the wise who, undaunted by obstacles, are putting this passage into practise."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Sharing the Daishonin's teachings with others is the essence of Buddhist practice in the Latter Day of the Law, and is the true mission of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth and disciples of the Daishonin....The movement to spread the Buddhist philosophy that
will enable all people to bring forth their Buddha nature is the basic struggle in contemporary society to revive humanity and firmly establish the dignity and value of all life.

"To carry this a step further, from the perspective of its social responsibility, the purpose of the Soka Gakkai, as an organisation of lay individuals upholding Buddhism, is to promote a flourishing culture based on respect for the dignity and value of life. Again, on the individual level, Soka Gakkai members should strive to make a
positive contribution to society by making their society a more harmonious place for all people and working to create communities and workplaces filled with humane values."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep 16th + Daily Enc. Sep 17th

The Gosho states:
"The deeper the roots, the more prolific the branches."*
The efforts that we put into building a meaningful "today"
go a long way into effecting the future.
Let us construct a solid foundation today for the sake of a
future that will last for ten thousand years and beyond.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Health is not simply the absence of illness. Nor is it simply physical well being. Genuine health is the state in which both body and mind are vigorously and soundly engaged in the process of creation. Real health is the ability to overcome every form of adversity and use even the worst of circumstances as a springboard for new growth and development.

"Simply put, the essence of health is the constant renewal and rejuvenation of life. The fundamental entity that makes this renewal of life possible can be perceived within us as the world of Buddhahood, or the life-state of the Buddha. And I believe that Buddhism, which opens the way to this renewal of life in the real world, teaches the way to keep health at the most fundamental level."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 13th + Daily Enc. Sep 14th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, September 13th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's make every effort to talk about justice and truth with others.
Let's earnestly chant the type of daimoku that will defeat erroneous teachings!
The endeavour to share Nichiren Buddhism with others
is certain to cause a great transformation in people's way of thinking and actions
and in the society in which we live in.

* "The heart of shakubuku is compassion; it is also the spirit to refute error because of the suffering it causes--a spirit that transforms our compassion into the courage to fight against that which is wrong."

"Hypocrisy is the exact opposite of compassion--specifically, the hypocrisy of knowing when wrong is being committed in the realm of Buddhism but doing nothing to address it. If such hypocrisy prevails, lies and pretence will become the norm and no one will speak the truth. This will ultimately lead to the spiritual and moral decay
of society. Without a sound spiritual underpinning like that provided by a humanistic religion, the fabric of society will crumble. If erroneous teachings spread and seek to enslave the exploit people, they will exert a harmful and poisonous effect on people's hearts and minds. That is why Daishonin stresses the importance of steadfastly and resolutely battling the 'enemies of the Lotus Sutra.'"

"Shakubuku, an act of supreme compassion, is a lion's roar directed towards the goal of reviving the goodness in people's hearts and bringing dynamic vitality and creativity to society for the benefit of all."
(Lectures on The Opening of the Eyes by Daisaku Ikeda published by Soka Gakkai Malaysia)

then two, three, and a hundred followed, chanting and teaching others."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Buddhism is a teaching that enriches our lives and helps us develop outstanding character and humanity. Employing the profound wisdom of Buddhism that is the starting point of human revolution, we can make a great contribution towards the happiness of ourselves and others, which is the original purpose of all religion. Any religious tradition that forgets to put people first invariably grows self-righteous and dogmatic.

"Ideally, the adherents of the various religions of the world should strive in a spirit of friendly competition to lead others to happiness. As members of the Soka Gakkai, we need to ponder how best to convey to people everywhere the true value of Nichiren Daishonin's humanistic Buddhism, which is based on the Lotus Sutra's lofty ideal of universal enlightenment. Today, as global pioneers of an age of humanistic competition, we are working hard to develop ourselves and also foster others. We are noble trailblazers spreading a religion for all humankind in the 21st century. Let's advance confidently with this pride."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep 11th + Daily Enc. Sep 12th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, September 11th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
We're off to a fresh new start.
And a chance to take on new challenges.
All of us, who strive together to achieve the noble task
of spreading the Mystic Law far and wide, are certain
to accumulate boundless good fortune and benefit that will
brilliantly adorn our lives.

Friday, September 11th, 2009
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In this chapter Shakyamuni Buddha revealed the foremost point he wished to convey to us. The Buddha preached the Lotus Sutra over a period of eight years, and eight characters sum up the message that he has left behind for living beings in this later age, the Latter Day of the Law. It is the passage that reads, 'Therefore, Universal
Worthy, if you see a person who accepts and upholds this sutra, you should rise and greet him from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha' (chapter twenty-eight), particularly the eight characters that make up the end of the passage, 'you should rise and greet him,' etc."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Anyone who seeks to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime and carries out faith aimed at achieving human revolution will be able to establish a firmly grounded self. We can develop a state of life that allows us to actualise happiness for ourselves and others. We can forge ahead undaunted by any adversity and enhance our capacity for
creating value out of every situation. Faith in the Daishonin's Buddhism enables us to cultivate an inner state of absolute freedom, undefeated by any karmic challenge. It is the means by which we can polish our lives."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Our life is like a stage upon which we enact the drama of kosen-rufu!
Just as Nichiren Daishonin says "you should all perform a dance"*,
let's all advance towards victory cheerfully and in high spirits.

* Gosho, Great Evil and Great Good - WND-1, page 1119, "Great events never have minor omens. When great evil occurs, great good follows. Since great slander already exists in our land, the great correct Law will spread without fail. What could any of you have to lament? Even if you are not the Venerable Mahakashyapa, you should all perform a dance. Even if you are not Shariputra, you should leap up and dance. When Bodhisattva Superior Practices emerged from the earth, did he not emerge dancing?"

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The blessings gained by practising the correct teaching, however, are so great that by meeting minor sufferings in this life we can change the karma that destines us to suffer terribly in the future."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin is a religion for ordinary people, aimed at opening an era of the people and helping everyone gain true happiness. For us, as its practitioners, the realisation of happiness for all people is not an abstract theory, but a concrete goal that we can achieve by focusing on each individual. By helping
one person become happy through faith in the Mystic Law, we can show actual proof of the validity of the Daishonin's Buddhism as a truly humanistic religion.

"Achieving an ideal society must ultimately begin with each individual carrying out their own great human revolution, or inner transformation. The Daishonin sought to foster such people, and in order to do so he taught that faith is a necessary and indispensable requirement."
