---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Of course, you're free to live your lives how you like, but don't forget the fundamental path of life.

"The Soka Gakkai teaches us this fundamental path--a path for accumulating good fortune, helping others, and working for peace. That's why we now have so many members around the world, and why our numbers continue to grow steadily. Support and praise for our movement promoting peace, culture, and education is spreading across the globe, transcending all boundaries and divisions.

"Nichiren Daishonin expounded his teaching for the eternal future. There's no need for us to rush or hurry. All the pieces are in place. The tide of history is moving in the direction of humanism. With profound conviction in this truth, please advance with a calm, relaxed, and broad-minded attitude."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It might be nice to live an ordinary life, or spend our days enjoying ourselves as we please. But our moods and emotions change from moment to moment. We also have to
deal with the effects of our karma and the troubled times in which we live. Unless we develop inner strength and richness, we can end up leading lives that, while they may appear free and easy on the surface, are actually the very opposite.

"Where can we find life's true glory and victory? Their brilliance shines in dedicating ourselves to the welfare of society and the world and to the cause of peace. Without a solid central pillar of a greater purpose such as the happiness and
solidarity of the human family, we will end up alone, leading an aimless life without any profound meaning or direction. When we take action to carry out our noble mission of kosen-rufu--working to help others become happy and spreading the Mystic Law--the drama of our own human revolution begins."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb. 26th + Daily Enc. Feb 27th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, February 26th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all the members of the SGI fife and drum corps,
brass band, orchestras and chorus groups,
thank you so much for giving us such encouraging
and rousing performances all the time!
To the "Wonderful Sound" that emanates from your great joy,
let's all advance, advance and advance!

"Bodhisattva Wonderful Sound represents cultural activity. I think we can say that Bodhisattva Wonderful Sound's actions symbolize the SGI's movement for peace, culture and education. We are moving forwards, giving rise to a brilliant heavenly song.... In any case, the fife and drum corps, brass band and chorus groups of the SGI have all developed splendidly. I am particularly proud to witness the growth of all those capable people who accomplished their human revolution through such musical training."

"The Daishonin writes: 'Even one seed, when planted, multiplies' (WND-2, 602). Seeds cannot sprout if they aren't sown. We need to sow one seed of the Mystic Law after another, sparing no effort. It is through such continuous, tireless actions that kosen-rufu will advance."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb. 24th + Daily Enc. Feb. 25th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's enthusiastically continue to meet with as many people as we can
and at the same time develop really heart-to-heart relations.
All of our efforts to engage in such dialogue is a great movement
to spread trust and friendship between people in society.

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In the light of the above points, this shows, my followers, that you had better cut short your sleep by night and curtail your leisure by day, and ponder this! You must not spend your lives in vain and regret it for ten thousand years to come."

(The Problem to Be Pondered Night and Day - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 622)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, February 24th, 2010

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"What is the purpose of life? What is the purpose of our Buddhist practice?

"Some live filled with joy. Some live steeped in suffering. Some live overwhelmed by sadness and sorrow. Some live trapped in unhappiness. Some live with exuberance, vigorously triumphing over all. There are so many ways people live their lives.

"Sometimes society or one's family situation, such as poverty, may be partly to blame for the circumstances one faces.

"The joy and ease of victory. The pain and hellish torments of defeat. Certainly, there are all kinds of lives and all kinds of circumstances. But what is the dividing line between success and failure in life, between joy and suffering? This is extremely complex and difficult to answer. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, however, directs us on a course to absolute victory. The Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin enables us to develop a serene life-state of inner abundance pervaded by the noble virtues of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity. Those who embrace faith in Nam-myoho-renge-kyo possess far, far greater wealth than those who have the most staggering fortunes or the most luxurious mansions. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the life and fundamental Law of the universe. When we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we have nothing to worry about. The Daishonin's words are never false. The purpose of our faith and practice is to achieve happiness and victory in our lives. This is the reality of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin, the one and eternal Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law.

"With this great Buddhism, we can make our way through life with imperturbable confidence, ever triumphant. We can advance along the road to happiness without the slightest fear, our hearts filled with optimism and hope, together with our family, friends, and loved ones.

"We are here to enjoy our lives. We mustn't lead unhappy lives pervaded by sadness, suffering, or defeat. Indeed, if we base our lives on the Mystic Law, that will never be the case anyway. This is the teaching of Nichiren Daishonin, the foremost sage in all the universe. How wonderfully reassuring this is!

"Let's live out our lives joyously, triumphantly, and cheerfully. Let's make them lives of great fulfilment and meaning! That's the purpose of our Buddhist practice."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb. 23rd + Daily Enc. Feb. 24th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"Iron, when heated in the flames and pounded, becomes a fine sword.*
To all of our youth,
confront hardships head on!
Challenging to overcome all difficulties and suffering,
without giving up, no matter how hard things might be,
will definitely strengthen us and
make us shine like treasured swords.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Treating one's friends with courtesy means that, although one may encounter them ten or twenty times in the course of a single day, one greets them courteously as though they had travelled a thousand or two thousand miles to see one, never showing them indifference."

(The Four Virtues and the Four Debts of Gratitude - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.2, page 636)
Selection source: "Suntetsu", Seikyo Shimbun, Feb. 23rd, 2010

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Following the path of mentor and disciple will always enable us to overcome the tendency towards arrogance, and thereby keep growing and achieve victory in our endeavours.

"The 'Encouraging Devotion' (13th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra describes the three powerful enemies--arrogant lay people, arrogant priests, and arrogant false sages --that will assail practitioners of the correct teaching. A more literal translation of the Sanskrit title of this chapter is 'Ceaseless Effort.' Devilish functions are ceaselessly active, which is why the Bodhisattvas of the Earth need to engage in ceaseless efforts even more earnestly to combat them. We must, therefore, strengthen our faith day by day and month after month (cf. WND-1, 997), as the Daishonin urges. We must become ever stronger.

"My mentor Josei Toda declared: 'We were born to keep progressing and to win in our lives. Our Buddhist practice enables us to quickly change ourselves for the better.'

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb. 21st + Daily Enc. Feb 22nd

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, February 21st, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
An organisation where everyone is on good terms with each other
always brims with joy and happiness
and shines with good fortune and benefit.
All of us are the precious children of the Buddha.
By praising and admiring each other's efforts,
let's launch a harmonious and wonderful advancement of the wise!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The lion king is said to advance three steps, then gather himself to spring, unleashing the same power whether he traps a tiny ant or attacks a fierce animal."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Zeami Motokiyo (1363-1443), who perfected the traditional Japanese art of Noh drama, wrote: 'If even a skillful actor is conceited, his abilities will probably decline.' And warning his students against having a false sense of superiority, he also quoted a famous passage from the Lotus Sutra that describes the tendency of people of overbearing arrogance: 'What they had not attained they supposed they had attained, what they had not understood they supposed they had understood' (LSOC2, 63 [LS2, 30]). In every area of human activity, arrogance is an impediment to growth. We must be constantly vigilant against succumbing to this tendency. History teaches us that arrogance is the beginning of decline for both individuals and organisations."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin encourages us to "strengthen our faith more than ever."*
Let's chant daimoku, with absolute confidence and conviction,
even more so than ever before.
Let's make every effort to have as many sincere and heartfelt conversations as we can.
And in our local areas, which we are so proud of, let's hoist the flag of Soka high!

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
My dearest fellow members of the great Kanto region*,
let us muster up our challenging spirit!
It is my fervent prayer that each and every member stands up resolutely like a lion,
and fearlessly uses their voice to create a better understanding of what our organisation is about!
As long as each one of us possesses a strong challenging spirit, victory shall certainly be ours!

* Kanto is the geographical region of the main island of Honshu, Japan that includes Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures.

"The American philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-82) observed: 'It is very certain that sincere and happy conversation doubles our powers.'

"The Daishonin's Buddhism exists so that everyone can become happy, and the purpose of discussion meetings is to inspire each person in faith. The main focus of the discussion meeting should be on every single one of the participants. Therefore, the determination and commitment of the central figures and attending leaders are crucial. In the lead-up to the meeting, they need to chant earnestly for the happiness of the members, and make thorough preparations. It is important that leaders show sincere respect and appreciation to each person participating, especially praising those who have worked hard behind the scenes."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Feb. 14th + Daily Enc. Feb. 15th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, February 14th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's make every effort to reach out and talk with others,
happily, open-mindedly
and in our own unique and individual ways.
Let's make our lives shine gloriously by building trust
and friendship with as many people as we possibly can!

Sunday, February 14th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"On the other, it is to voice what one truly has in mind. Thus one's thoughts are expressed in one's voice. The mind represents the spiritual aspect, and the voice, the physical aspect. The spiritual aspect manifests itself in the physical. A person can know another's mind by listening to the voice. This is because the physical aspect reveals the spiritual aspect."

"This is the same spirit with which our discussion meetings are conducted. As such, they are free of cruel malice and contempt, intimidation, authoritarianism, discrimination, or petty emotionalism. Our meetings are marked by a warm spirit of trust and support based on deep mutual respect. They are occasions where we confirm our shared conviction that everyone has the right to happiness and can become happy without fail, no matter what their problems."

As leaders, let's devote ourselves to studying deeply and thoroughly
and always maintaining a fresh, vibrant spirit in faith.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It is rare to be born a human being: the number of those born with human life is 'as small as the amount of earth one can place on a fingernail.' In addition, human life is as hard to sustain 'as it is for the dew to remain on the grass.' The Daishonin thus indicates how irreplaceable our lives as human beings are, and how precious every single day and moment is.

"'It is better to live a single day with honour than to live to 120 and die in disgrace' (WND-1, 851), the Daishonin declares, thereby highlighting the criterion for true merit in life. Our true merit as a human being arises from what we decide to make our life's purpose and how we go about achieving it.

"Accordingly, the Daishonin offers this specific guidance to his disciple out of a wish for him to succeed on a fundamental level: 'Live so that all the people of Kamakura will say in your praise that [Shijo Kingo] is diligent in the service of his lord, in the service of Buddhism, and in his concern for other people' (cf. WND-1, 851). It implies three particular areas in which Kingo needs to be victorious: (1) rebuilding a relationship of mutual trust with his lord, (2) continuing to make unwavering efforts as a practitioner of the Mystic Law, and (3) winning the trust of those around him. The treasures of the heart will shine in all these three endeavours. In other words, we are truly victorious when we bring forth the brilliance of our Buddha nature in all aspects of our life."

SGI Newsletter No. 7929, LEARNING FROM THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN: THE TEACHINGS FOR VICTORY, [12] 'The Three Kinds of Treasure'--Part 3 [of 3] The Ultimate Key to Victory in Life Is Accumulating the Treasures of the Heart, from the December 2009 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translated Feb. 5th, 2010

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The "time" has come!
The final touches to the kosen-rufu movement
is the mission of my dear members of the great Tohoku region!*
From the castle of capable and talented people
who share the deep bond of mentor and disciple,
unleash a mighty lion's roar for truth and justice.

"The accepting and upholding of this original Law is expressed in the single word "belief" or "faith". The singe word "belief" is the same sharp sword with which one confronts and overcomes fundamental darkness or ignorance. The commentary [Words and Phrases] says, "Belief means to be without doubt." You should think about this."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Do not go around lamenting to others how hard it is for you to live in this world. To do so is an act utterly unbecoming to a worthy man.' (WND-1, 850)

"Here, the Daishonin especially castigates lamentation and self-pity. This passage gets at the heart of people's readiness to bewail matters that are beyond their control. Everyone is susceptible to doing this. Even Kingo, who was prepared to lay down his life alongside the Daishonin at a crucial moment, tended to have trouble with human relations because of his rigidity and single-mindedness, and may have given in to complaining in spite of himself. In advising Kingo not to go around lamenting to others, the Daishonin underscores that moaning about one's troubles or misfortunes is not the way of life of the wise, but the foolish.

"The Daishonin writes:

"'If a man behaves in this [unfortunate] way, then after he dies, his wife, overcome with sorrow at losing her husband, will tell other people about the shameful things he did, though she has no real intention of doing so. And that will in no way be her fault, but solely the result of his own reprehensible behaviour.' (WND-1, 850)

"Complaining nurtures one's inner weakness and negativity, and becomes a cause for stagnation. Here, the Daishonin is teaching Shijo Kingo that doing away with complaint and instead challenging his own human revolution head-on is the sure path to victory in life."

"We can manifest the brilliance of the world of Buddhahood anywhere. This is the teaching of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. Our first two presidents, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda, united by the bonds of mentor and disciple, demonstrated this with their own lives. In a prison cell that he described as 'cold to the extreme,' Mr. Makiguchi wrote: 'Depending on one's frame of mind, even hell can be enjoyable.' And Mr. Toda, who accompanied him to prison, remarked: 'Even if I should fall into hell, it wouldn't matter to me in the least. I would simply share the correct teaching with the inhabitants there and turn it into the Land of Tranquil Light.' This spirit is the very quintessence of faith in the Daishonin's Buddhism."

* We have a Japanese press holiday today so we have held on to yesterday's "Words of the Week" to cover the gap. Hope that has not caused too many problems!

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

February 8th -14th, 2010
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
"The voice carries out the work of the Buddha."*
Let's chant daimoku resonantly,
speak with the same courage as that of a roaring lion,
and have the type of conversations that really move others' hearts.
Let's be victorious with a resounding ring of conviction in our voices!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Moreover, in spite of the fact that even such men of past ages as these puzzled over the doctrine of attaining Buddhahood in one's present form, your having inquired about this doctrine again and again in this way in your situation as a woman is surely no ordinary thing. Has Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, taken possession of you?"

- The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.2, page 892)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In 'The Three Kinds of Treasure,' the Daishonin praises his disciple's faith, explaining that Kingo was able to take the first step towards victory based on the principle of 'manifesting the Buddha nature from within and bringing forth protection from without' (cf. WND-1, 848). The moment Kingo stood up with unwavering faith, his inner Buddha nature manifested, this activated the heavenly deities--the benevolent functions of the universe--and resulted in external protection in the form of Lord Ema's renewed reliance on Kingo.

"But Kingo still found himself in a rather hostile environment. In this writing, the Daishonin offers a variety of detailed instructions and advice to help Kingo solidify the victories he has achieved thus far. He urges his disciple to remain vigilant against attack, to interact with others in a courteous and sincere manner, and to foster good relations with his brothers and fellow practitioners and make them his allies. The Daishonin also warns Kingo to keep a tight rein on his short temper, sternly pointing out that if he succumbs to an outburst, it could cause a serious rift in his relations with those around him and destroy all the positive progress he has made.

"To achieve unshakable victory, we need to challenge ourselves in earnest to change our karma. This is also the practice of human revolution, in which we strive to break through our inner darkness or ignorance. Carelessness is the greatest enemy. If we allow ourselves to grow complacent and lose our fighting spirit, then the shortcomings or negative tendencies that arise from our fundamental darkness will resurface. For that reason, the Daishonin consistently stresses the point that faith is life's ultimate treasure."
