[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 28th Feb. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 28th Feb - 6th March Words of the Week

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, February 28th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
If we have even a small inclination
to hang on to someone else's sleeve,
our capability will be reduced by half.
Rather, it is the determination to stand up by ourselves
that enables us to bring forth boundless strength and ability
from within.
Let's each be the one who cheerfully, and independently,
takes the initiative in all of our activities.

---- Words of the Week ----
The increase and development of our youth division members
and the dedicated efforts of our men's division members
is what really makes our Soka mothers happy.
To all of our gallant men and young people,
who have the equivalent strength of ten thousand,
let's create a surge of victories one after another!

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Today again, happily and cheerfully,
let's help as many people as we possibly can to connect with this Buddhism.
The Daishonin states,
"I entrust you with the propagation of Buddhism in your province."*
Let's be determined to make the happiness of our local community
our responsibility!

"Even under such circumstances, as a woman you have inherited the life of the Lotus Sutra. In fact, you have inherited the life of the parents of Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, and the Buddhas of the ten directions. Is there anyone else in the entire land of Jambudvipa who possesses such good fortune?"

"All it takes is just one person. If one person rises to action, everyone else will follow suit. Nichiren Daishonin offers this allegory: 'The situation is like the joints in a piece of bamboo: if one joint is ruptured, then all the joints will split' (WND-1, 512).

"It's not about comparing ourselves with others, but how we are challenging ourselves. We need to summon courage from within and break through our limitations. That's how the vast frontiers of kosen-rufu are opened."

"Great accomplishments are not achieved in a day. Our goal of kosen-rufu, in particular, is a never-ending challenge that we will continue striving to accomplish into the eternal future of the Latter Day of the Law. That is why each day we must have courage, take action, advance, and win. Let's strive unceasingly and patiently to create a wonderful history of value creation together!

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 25th Feb. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 26th Feb. Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, February 25th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The basis for fostering capable people
is, first of all, the improvement in our own lives.
That single wave of transformation created by one individual
gives rise to the momentum for ten thousand waves and more.
Let's all perform glorious dramas of human revolution!

"When great evil occurs, great good follows."
(Great Evil and Great Good - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 1119)
Selection source: Soka Gakkai member's experience, Seikyo Shimbun, Feb. 25th, 2011

Saturday, February 26th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In 'Letter to Gijo-bo,' the Daishonin refers to the verse section of the 'Life Span' (16th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra that we recite each day in gongyo as follows:

"The verse section of the ['Life Span'] chapter states, '...single-mindedly desiring to see the Buddha, not hesitating even if it costs them their lives' [LSOC16, 271]. As a result of this passage, I have revealed the Buddhahood in my own life....

" I, Nichiren, say that 'single' stands for myo, or mystic, 'mind' for ho, or law, 'desiring' for ren, or lotus, 'see' forge, or flower, and 'Buddha' for kyo, or sutra. In propagating these five characters [of Myoho-renge-kyo], practitioners should 'not hesitate even if it costs them their lives.

"'...Single-mindedly desiring to see the Buddha' may be read as follows: single-mindedly observing the Buddha, concentrating one's mind on seeing the Buddha, and when looking at one's own mind, perceiving that it is the Buddha. (WND-1, 389–390),

To seek the Buddha single-mindedly means, in other words, to strive earnestly to spread the Mystic Law. This spirit of selfless dedication is the hallmark of a Buddha.

"...Naturally, to 'not hesitate even if it costs us our lives' does not mean that we should recklessly discard our lives or not care about what happens to us. Rather, it means manifesting our potential to the fullest. Doing so requires that we break out of the shell of our small self that is dominated by ego and cowardice, and throw ourselves into the effort to widely spread the Mystic Law.

"...The renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-73) wrote: 'Present and past humanism has strengthened and proliferated through dispute, when the debate has been dignified and profound.'

Let's cut through all the hurdles in life
and open the way forwards using the "sharp sword" of faith.*

"'The voice does the Buddha's work' from The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings (cf. OTT, 4). In other words, our voices can awaken people's Buddha nature, the supremely noble life-state of Buddhahood within. That is why it is important to chant vigorous daimoku and speak to others unstintingly, our voices ringing with courage, sincerity, truth, and inspiration. It is essential to meet and talk with people, and increase the number of those who have a connection with Buddhism."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 23rd Feb. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 24th Feb. Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The dawn on a new age
will begin starting with the great islands of Okinawa.*
With voices ringing out loud for kosen-rufu,
may you dance and rejoice, and I will too!
By being absolutely sincere in all that we do,
let us advance victoriously.

* Okinawa is one of Japan's southern prefectures, and consists of hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 km long, which extends southwest from Kyushu (one of Japan's main four islands) to Taiwan.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"A hundred years of practice in the Land of Perfect Bliss cannot compare to the benefit gained from one day's practice in the impure world. Two thousand years of propagating Buddhism during the Former and Middle Days of the Law are inferior to an hour of propagation in the Latter Day of the Law. "

"When we chant powerful daimoku, make a firm resolve in faith, and keep pressing forwards in the face of trying situations, the indestructible life-state of Buddhahood will pulse in our lives at each moment. It will rouse the protective forces of the universe, and enable us to transform even evil demons and their minions--the negative functions of life--into allies.

"The Ikegami brothers, along with their wives, united together solidly and strove in their Buddhist practice in exact accord with the solemn instruction of the Daishonin. Eventually, they were able to guide their father, who had been deceived by corrupt, self-serving priests, to the correct teaching. They demonstrated undeniable proof of victory by achieving a happy and harmonious family, and further by putting Buddhism into practice in their endeavours in society."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 23rd Feb. Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
A life dedicated wholeheartedly
to the realisation of a pledge is indeed a beautiful one!
Truly victorious heroes are those
who uncompromisingly stick to their youthful beliefs and ideals
and see the pledges they made during their youth,
all the way through to fruition!

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Rather than offering up ten thousand prayers for remedy, it would be better simply to outlaw this one evil."
(On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 15)

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Each and every aspect
of your Buddhist practice
is a cause
for your accumulation
of great benefit.

"'He who steps on his misery stands higher' -- I engraved these famous words of the German poet Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) in my heart in my youth.

"The times in which we live are growing ever more troubled and confused. Many people are struggling with work, family finances, and complex human relations. None of us can avoid the fundamental sufferings of the human condition, including sickness, aging, and death. People who have a great mission and responsibility are bound to encounter great challenges and difficulties.

"In a letter to the Ikegami brothers who were facing daunting obstacles, Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Put into flames, a rock simply turns to ashes, but gold becomes pure gold. This trial [confronting you], more than anything else, will prove your faith genuine, and the ten demon daughters of the Lotus Sutra will surely protect you' (WND-1, 497). Times of difficulty test our faith. Genuine faith in the Daishonin's Buddhism means remaining steadfast and unfaltering, no matter what happens."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 20th Feb. To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 21st Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, February 20th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The only limitations we have are the ones that we ourselves create!
By chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the courage of a lion king,
let's break through all the obstacles that exist within ourselves.
Come, let's take one courageous step forwards.

Sunday, February 20th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbour doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood. Do not have doubts simply because heaven does not lend you protection. Do not be discouraged because you do not enjoy an easy and secure existence in this life. This is what I have taught my disciples morning and evening, and yet they begin to harbour doubts and abandon their faith. Foolish men are likely to forget the promises they have made when the crucial moment comes."

(The Opening of the Eyes - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 283)
Selection source: Soka Gakkai member's experience, Seikyo Shimbun, February 20th, 2011

Monday, February 21st, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It is crucial that leaders of kosen-rufu cast aside any sense of self-importance and pretence and give their all on the front lines of our organisation. As leaders, your warmth will warm the hearts of others, your passion will inspire others, and your sincere actions will bring out the sincerity of others.

"Praising the seeking spirit of a female disciple who asked him a question about Buddhism, the Daishonin writes: 'Moved to heartfelt admiration, I thought that I would like to add just one word or one expression of my own rejoicing, endeavouring in this way to enhance your merit' (WND-1, 69). In other words, he wishes to encourage her even a little more in order to increase the 'good roots' of her faith.

"I hope you will continue to sincerely encourage others in the same spirit as the Daishonin. In this way, everyone will be able to summon forth the power of faith and the power of practice and increase the power of the Buddha and the power of the Law towards the dynamic advance and victory of kosen-rufu."

"Everything starts with raising capable people.

"I am presently engaged in a dialogue with Gao Zhanxiang, chairman of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society (CCPS). In our discussions, one of the topics we are focusing on is fostering youth. Mr. Gao is a past leader of the largest Chinese youth organisation, the All-China Youth Federation (ACYF). With that as his starting point, he is now devoting his energies to the development of youth.

"Mr. Gao has suggested four guidelines for interacting with youth: warmth, respect, trust, and responsibility. First, 'warmth' means engaging young people with a warm, humanistic manner. Young people do not respond to a stiff, cold attitude. "'Respect' means respecting youth as individuals, not treating them in a condescending way or looking down on them. Those who respect young people will have that respect returned. 'Trust' means believing in and trusting young people. Trust nurtures self-confidence and ability. 'Responsibility' means taking on the responsibility to raise youth.

"Mr. Gao emphasises: 'Youth are like seeds growing towards the future. When you nurture them with warmth like a gentle spring breeze, they will come to flower and bear fruit."

"I agree wholeheartedly. More than ever, we need to impart a warm spring breeze of encouragement to the youth."

"The times are changing at a dizzying pace. The sincere dedication of wise people will become even more important. My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, was always very strict with leaders. His strictness was actually an expression of his compassion.

"He once said: 'The slightest things can determine the course of your life. It can be ruined by behaving even a little bit rashly or arrogantly or being the smallest bit negligent.'

"In the organisation, there may be people who have different personalities from our own, and there may be times when there are clashes and misunderstandings as a result. But part of our Buddhist practice is uniting our hearts in a shared purpose with others, even when it may be challenging. That is how we do our human revolution, expand our life-state, and together accumulate benefit.

"The Daishonin writes:

"Bodhisattva Never Disparaging of old said that all people have the Buddha nature and that, if they embrace the Lotus Sutra, they will never fail to attain Buddhahood. He further stated that to slight a person is to slight the Buddha himself. Thus, his practice was to revere all people....

"Take these teachings to heart, and always remember that believers in the Lotus Sutra should absolutely be the last to abuse one another. All those who keep faith in the Lotus Sutra are most certainly Buddhas, and one who slanders a Buddha commits a grave offence. (WND-1, 756)"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'In order to repay my debt to my mother'--what a beautifully succinct yet profound expression of the humanistic spirit of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism! To repay our debt of gratitude to our mothers who gave birth to us, raised us, and protected us, is an important principle of Buddhism. It could be said, in a sense, that Buddhism seeks to teach us to emulate this spirit of motherly compassion in our interactions with others.

"In an early Buddhist scripture, Shakyamuni Buddha instructs: 'Just as a mother would protect with her life her own son, her only son, so one should cultivate an unbounded mind towards all beings, and loving-kindness [compassion] towards all the world.' It may be no exaggeration to say that 'motherly compassion' is identical to the 'heart of the Buddha,' which all living beings inherently possess. A mother's compassion or love for her only child is directly linked to the concern or loving-kindness of the Buddha for all living beings. To experience a mother's love and compassion is to experience the heart of the Buddha. All of us are beneficiaries of the great spiritual blessings of motherly love and compassion.

"It is an unfortunate reality of our human world, however, that the lot of many mothers is one of suffering and sorrow. This is because people's hearts are ruled by self-interest, calculation, and rivalry--which are the polar opposite of compassion. Consequently, as a youth deeply sensitive to the profound debt he owed his mother, the Daishonin embarked on studying the teachings of Buddhism in order to fundamentally free his mother from suffering. Referring to the basic aspiration that should be cherished by those who would renounce secular life, he writes: 'When a man leaves his parents and home and becomes a monk, he should always have as his goal the salvation of his father and mother' (WND-1, 228).
