and throughout the world!

If we examine the nature of Myoho-renge-kyo, we see that the treasure towers are none other than all living beings, and all living beings are none other than the complete entities of Nam-Myoho-renge-kyo."

"The lay nun Myoshin was one of the Daishonin's women disciples. Thought to be the wife of the lay priest Takahashi Rokuro Hyoe, she lived in Suraga province (present-day central Shizuoka Prefecture). She was also the aunt of Nikko Shonin, the Daishonin's direct disciple and successor.

"While the lay nun Myoshin was taking care of her husband, who was very sick, the Daishonin sent her a letter of heartfelt encouragement. Founding Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi underlined as important the following passage of this letter in his personal copy of the Daishonin's writings: 

"'Could not this illness of your husband's be the Buddha's design, because the Vimalakirti and Nirvana sutras both teach that sick people will surely attain Buddhahood? Illness gives rise to the resolve to attain the way. (WND–1, 937)

"Everyone falls ill. It is not a sign of defeat. In fact, Nichiren Buddhism enables us to use the experience of illness to become stronger, deeper and wiser people."

"'In the "entrustment" chapter [of the Lotus Sutra], the heavenly gods and benevolent deities pledge to protect the votaries [practitioners] of the Lotus Sutra. Of all the guardian deities in heaven, it is the gods of the sun and the moon who visibly protect us. How can we doubt their protection?'

"From 'The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra' 

(WND–1, 1000).

"Shijo Kingo, to whom these words are addressed, triumphed in an intense struggle with powerful opponents. Why was he able to do so? The Daishonin attributes it to his disciple's 'usual prudence and courage, as well as his firm faith in the Lotus Sutra' (cf. WND–1, 1000).

"Those who practice the Mystic Law can activate the protective functions of the universe and make allies of everyone they encounter.

"'No treasure tower exists other than Myoho-renge-kyo. The daimoku of the Lotus Sutra is the treasure tower, and the treasure tower is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.'

"From 'On the Treasure Tower' (WND–1, 299).

"Our founding president, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, was born in Niigata Prefecture [on June 6th, 1871], exactly 600 years after Nichiren Daishonin was exiled to Sado Island, which today is part of the same prefecture. He selflessly dedicated his life to spreading the Mystic Law, just as the Daishonin taught. This was a passage he regarded as very important, underlining it in red in his copy of the Daishonin's writings.

"Making our founder's courageous spirit our own, let us continue to engage in respectful one-to-one dialogue as he did! So that we can create growing forests of treasure towers—our own and others' lives shining with supreme dignity—and build treasure realms of peace and security in our societies, based on the humanistic principles of Nichiren Buddhism."

*"August 24 was an unforgettable day for Shin'ichi. It was not only the anniversary of his joining the Soka Gakkai, but it would also become the day that he made a deep commitment to dedicate his life to following the eternal mentor-disciple path as Mr.Toda's disciple. … Men's division members are strong. They are the golden pillars of their families, society and the Soka Gakkai. And the effort of men's division members is a decisive factor in the struggle for the victory of kosen-rufu. That's why Shin'ichi completely agreed with the proposal from the men's division to make August 24 Men's Division Day."

"'Bound as we common mortals are by earthly desires, we can instantly attain the same virtues as Shakyamuni Buddha, for we receive all the benefits that he accumulated. The [Lotus Sutra] reads, "Hoping to make all persons equal to me, without any distinction between us" [LSOC2, 70].

"Helping all people attain the same state of happiness as the Buddha is the great vow of Soka mentors and disciples. Through our power of faith and practice based on that vow, we can limitlessly bring forth the power of the Buddha and the Law—power equal to and in no way different from that of the Buddha.

"In this letter, the Daishonin also writes: 'A cub [of] a lion king will become a lion king' (cf. WND–1, 323). Let's demonstrate our compassion through courageous action based on the Mystic Law, the 'great wisdom of equality' (LSOC11, 210). Let's help one person after another form a connection with Nichiren Buddhism as a cause for their happiness, thereby bringing benefit to others and also ourselves."

"'Wherever one may be, whether in the mountains, on the seas, in the skies or in the cities, one cannot escape death. Nevertheless, a sutra explains that even one's fixed karma can be changed. T'ien-t'ai's commentary also states that one can prolong one's fixed span of life.'

From "Propagation by the Wise" (WND–1, 753).

"'Faith for health and long life' is one of the Soka Gakkai's eternal guidelines. I hope that you will live wisely based on the Mystic Law so that you can enjoy healthy and fulfilling lives. It is also important to have regular checkups and seek appropriate treatment when you are ill.

"When battling sickness, you may at times feel scared and anxious, but please be assured that the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law steadfastly protects all who strive with courage as Bodhisattvas of the Earth. Moreover, the Daishonin teaches that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the heart of the Lotus Sutra, has the immense beneficial power to even prolong our lives. With deep awareness in your mission for kosen-rufu, resolutely defeat the devil of illness!"

"'This saha world is a land in which one gains the way through the faculty of hearing. And, as I indicated earlier [the Great Teacher Miao-lo states], "You should understand that one's life and its environment at a single moment encompasses the three thousand realms." It is clear, then, that the bodies of all living beings encompass the hundred worlds and thousand factors, and the three thousand realms.

"Therefore living beings whose ears are touched by the daimoku [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] are living beings who will gain merit [benefit].

From 'The Doctrine of Three Thousand Realms in a Single Moment of Life" (WND–2, 87 and 88).

"All on our planet can attain Buddhahood through coming in contact with the Mystic Law. Our voices, therefore, have the power to move people's hearts and change the world.

"Dialogue infused with a sincere prayer for others' happiness will sow the seed of Buddhahood in their hearts. The more we speak about Nichiren Buddhism, the more we gain benefit ourselves and help others do the same. We can create realms of peace and security in accord with the principle of three thousand realms in a single moment of life. All our efforts help people form precious connections with Buddhism.

"All who embrace faith in the Mystic Law can cause their lives, which embody the principle of 'three thousand realms in a single moment of life,' to shine brightly. They can freely bring forth the power of the Buddha and transform any negative karma without fail.
