---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In the 'Emergence of the Treasure Tower' (11th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, Many Treasures Buddha and the Buddhas of the ten directions who are emanations of Shakyamuni gather in the presence of Shakyamuni. Why do they do this? Citing the sutra, Nichiren Daishonin states in 'The Opening of the Eyes' that they do so in order to make certain that the Law will long endure and, more specifically, 'to insure the future propagation of the Lotus Sutra so that it can be made available to all the children of the Buddha in times to come' (WND-1, 286).

"The focus of the Lotus Sutra, in other words, is the future propagation of the Mystic Law. From the perspective of the Buddha, the main concern is leading 'all the children of the Buddha in times to come'--namely, all living beings of the future--to enlightenment. Kosen-rufu is the noble undertaking of 'enabling all living beings to attain Buddhahood in the ten thousand years of the Latter Day of the Law' (OTT, 41). Towards that end, it is essential that we foster a steady stream of capable individuals. This is why to encourage a single youth division or future division member serves to create incredible value for the sake of kosen-rufu.

"...Our efforts to foster capable individuals for kosen-rufu are extremely crucial in building the future. As the Daishonin states: 'If you want to understand what results will be manifested in the future, look at the causes that exist in the present' (WND-1, 279). What matters are the concrete actions we take now in order to ensure future victory."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The foundation of the lofty philosophy we are practicing is the Gosho, the writings of Nichiren Daishonin. The Gosho is a treasure house of wisdom that can open a hopeful future for humanity. Many of the issues facing the contemporary world--such as war, violence, discrimination, and environmental destruction--can ultimately be traced back to us human beings and our fundamental state of life. The Daishonin's Buddhism sheds light on this basic point and reveals the wisdom needed for creating a culture of genuine peace and coexistence.

"In his treatise 'On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land,' the Daishonin writes: 'If we wish first of all to bring security to the nation and to pray for our present and future lives, then we must hasten to examine and consider the [dire] situation [in society] and take measures as soon as possible to remedy it'
(cf. WND-1, 24).

"If you want to understand the causes that existed in the past, look at the results as they are manifested in the present. And if you want to understand what results will be manifested in the future, look at the causes that exist in the present."
(The Opening of the Eyes - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 279)

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"You don't have to put so much pressure on yourself or think that you need to be a certain way. In Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, attaining Buddhahood doesn't mean that we become something special or extraordinary. In fact, the life-state of Buddhahood could simply be described as having a character that overflows with the warmest humanity.

"The Lotus Sutra expounds that the nine worlds possess the potential for Buddhahood, while Buddhahood also retains the nine worlds. In other words, practising this Buddhism doesn't mean we'll no longer experience problems or obstacles. But by earnestly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and exerting ourselves for the sake of the Law, for others, and for society, we can manifest the noble life-state of Buddhahood, just as we are in our unadorned, ordinary selves. We can make the inherent nature of our lives from time without beginning shine as brilliantly as the morning sun. In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, Nichiren Daishonin states: 'Kuon [or time without beginning] means something that was not worked for, that was not improved upon, but that exists just as it always has' (OTT, 141).

"There's no need for pretension or conceit. We shouldn't compare ourselves with others and put ourselves down. The correct practice for self-actualisation in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is to contribute to society by joyfully and freely revealing our true self."
SGI Newsletter No. 8086, YOUTH AND THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN, Everlasting Victory Based on the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin--Part 2 [of 2], from the May 27th, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated Sep. 24th, 2010

"I, Nichiren, have inscribed my life in sumi ink, so believe in the Gohonzon with your whole heart. The Buddha's will is the Lotus Sutra, but the soul of Nichiren is nothing other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo."

Sunday, September 26th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In a letter sent to Toki Jonin, one of the central figures among his lay followers, Nichiren Daishonin sternly cautions: 'You must not spend your lives in vain and regret it for ten thousand years to come' (WND-1, 622). And he adds in the postscript: 'I hope all those who are serious in their resolve will gather in one place and listen to this letter [being read]' (WND-1, 622).

"As disciples, it's not enough that we simply read the Daishonin's writings or our mentor's guidance in quiet solitude. We should have the spirit to gather together in one place with our fellow practitioners. The earnest resolve in making an effort to assemble in this way has the power to defeat negativity and devilish functions. And by joining together with others to study the Daishonin's writings and our mentor's guidance, we can summon forth lionlike courage to undertake the task of actualising the great vow of kosen-rufu.

"Even if beforehand we don't really feel like attending a meeting, once we get there we invariably find ourselves refreshed and invigorated. Meetings have a wondrous power to draw us towards happiness and victory.

How we speak has a very big impact on others.
By speaking in a refreshing, vibrant voice,
speaking in a warm and caring voice,
or speaking in a courageous and confident voice--
let's all forge ahead together cheerfully!

What have you to complain of, if you are cherished by Shakyamuni Buddha, Many Treasures Buddha, and the Buddhas of the ten directions, as well as by Brahma, Shakra, and the gods of the sun and moon? As long as you are praised by the Lotus Sutra, what cause have you for discontent?"

"Throughout history, how many innocent people have been falsely charged and made to suffer? A society that harms the just and innocent and causes pain and suffering to decent, hardworking citizens must be changed. That is the purpose of our struggle to establish the correct teaching for the peace of the land.

"In the Lotus Sutra it states that those who propagate its teachings during the Latter Day of the Law must 'be patient' (LSOC10, 207) in the face of persecution. Clarifying this point, the Daishonin says: 'Now Nichiren and his followers, who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, think of the Buddha and [his decree], and for that reason, they respond with patience' (cf, OTT, 86). As long as we are deeply committed to fulfilling the Buddha's decree of kosen-rufu that is the heart of the shared struggle of mentor and disciple, we can endure anything and can win over every obstacle.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep.20th + Words of the Week Sep.20th-26th

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, September 20th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
When the seasons begin to change,
let's be careful about the frequent changes in temperature.
Maintaining a good rhythm in our daily lives,
let's make our being in good health our top priority
so that we can all continue to carry out our unique and noble roles.

Monday, September 20th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Whatever trouble occurs, regard it as no more than a dream, and think only of the Lotus Sutra."
(Letter to the Brothers - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 502)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, September 20th, 2010

September 20th-26th, 2010
---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
Each of our "Many Treasures" group members,
our SGI's pioneers and seniors in faith,
are endowed with the great wealth of the treasures of the heart.
Let us always make sure to tell each and every one of them
how so much we appreciate what they have done for us
and let's never forget to treat them with respect!
With a youthful spirit, together with them,
let's all advance along the golden path of
'eternity, happiness, true self, and purity'.*

*four virtues - Four noble qualities of a Buddha's life - eternity, happiness, true self, and purity. These describe the true nature of a Buddha's life, which is pure and eternal, and which manifests the true self and enjoys absolute happiness. Because ordinary people possess the Buddha nature, they too can develop the four virtues
when they attain Buddhahood by fulfilling the Buddha's teachings.

poison into medicine through our practice.**

"The antiwar activist Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919) was also imprisoned for her ideals. She wrote: 'I haven't been soft up to now, but now I am as hard as tempered steel.' While in prison, she wrote in encouragement to a friend: 'You shall not become discouraged!' and 'Take courage, we shall continue to meet whatever life has in store for us, come what may.' To have courage is to remain positive in all situations. It is to be invincible and free. On the other hand, to be overcome by cowardice is to be trapped and miserable.

"'If those in power wish to test me, let them! As a champion of Soka, I will not be defeated!'--this is my spirit. July 3 is my eternal prime point. It is the day I firmly pledged in my heart to dedicate my life to protecting my mentor, the Soka Gakkai, and our members.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The lion king fears no other beast, nor do its cubs' (WND-1, 997); and 'My wish is that my disciples will be cubs of the lion king, never to be laughed at by the pack of foxes' (WND-2, 1062). The mentors and disciples of Soka are all, without exception, courageous lions.

"Lions are not fearful! Lions are not defeated! Lions are always alert! Lions attack every challenge head-on! Lions win!"
SGI Newsletter No. 8083, OUR BRILLIANT PATH TO VICTORY, July 3rd and the Spirit of Mentor and Disciple--Part 1 [of 2], from the July 1st, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated Sep. 15th, 2010

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 17th + Daily Enc. Sep 18th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, September 17th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Now is the time for us SGI members,
with the courage of a lion,
to show our real strengths and abilities.
Let's courageously step forwards and take dynamic
action to spread our movement far and wide, now!
With the power of our strong faith and practice,*
let's open up the great path to victory!

*four powers - The power of the Buddha, the power of the Law, the power of faith, and the power of practice. In Nichiren's teachings, the four powers are known as the four powers of the Mystic Law, whose interaction enables one to have one's prayers answered and attain Buddhahood. The power of the Buddha is the Buddha's compassion in
saving all people. The power of the Law indicates the boundless capacity of the Mystic Law to lead all people to enlightenment. The power of faith is to believe in the Gohonzon, the object of devotion that embodies the power of the Buddha and the power of the Law, and the power of practice is to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo oneself and teach others to do the same. To the extent that one brings forth
one's powers of faith and practice, one can manifest the powers of the Buddha and the Law within one's own life.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) insightfully observed: 'Anyone moved by selfless sentiments in founding something great takes care that he raises heirs [to carry on his work].' Those who are only concerned with their own power and glory have no interest in fostering outstanding successors. But great undertakings dedicated to the welfare of the people and society must be passed to
successors or disciples who will carry on the work of its pioneers. This was Nietzsche's conclusion.

"The solemn path of mentor and disciple is not one where the disciples are carried on the mentor's back, but one where the disciples themselves walk on their own two feet and steadfastly advance on the same path as their mentor. Being determined to strive
in a spirit of oneness with the mentor is the driving force that enables the disciples to walk this difficult path throughout their lives with unwavering resolve."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 16th + Daily Enc. Sep. 17th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, September 16th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let us make our joyful and inspiring discussion meetings
the starting point for the great growth and expansion
of our movement for kosen-rufu.
Centred around the Youth Division,
let us together make a new departure towards the grand stage
of the centenary of the founding of the Soka Gakkai.

"Value the present. As German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) said to his young colleague Johann Peter Eckermann (1792-1854): 'Hold fast by the present. Every situation--nay, every moment--is of infinite worth.' These are the words of a true master of life who grew more vigorous with each passing year. This is the same spirit shared by the Many Treasures Group members, the pioneers of our Soka movement.

"The Buddhist principle of three thousand realms in a single moment of life teaches us that each moment contains possibilities as vast as the universe. Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'As life does not go beyond the moment, the Buddha expounded the blessings that come from a single moment of rejoicing [on hearing the Lotus Sutra]'(WND-1, 62).

"Don't let the present moment slip by. Like throwing the windows wide open, open your lives to the fullest and manifest the joy-filled wisdom and power of the Buddha. Faith in the Mystic Law enables us to do this. Every moment is a challenge; every moment is a win-or-lose struggle.

"It's a waste to limit your potential by locking yourself away and letting yourself be ruled by fear. Summon up your courage. Challenge yourself with an eager and optimistic spirit.

"When things are tough, warmly encourage one another as good friends in faith and move resolutely towards victory by bringing forth the invincible power of the Buddha and the Law through the dynamic power of faith and practice."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Sep. 11th + Daily Enc. Sep 12th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Now is the time for us to take on new challenges.
Let's set clearly defined goals and targets,
and then let's move forwards with the absolute conviction that
"No prayer will go unanswered."*

*"If you have faith in this Gohonzon and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo even for a short while, no prayer will go unanswered, no offence unexpiated, no good fortune unbestowed, and all righteousness proven."
(Commentary on "The True Object of Worship" by Nichikan Shonin)

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"This is similar to a tarnished mirror that will shine like a jewel when polished. A mind now clouded by the illusions of the innate darkness of life is like a tarnished mirror, but when polished, it is sure to become like a clear mirror, reflecting the essential nature of phenomena and the true aspect of reality."

(On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 384)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It is truly inspiring to see the way that you, my dear disciples, are persevering with courageous faith in the great and noble struggle to refute error and clarify the truth for the happiness of all people. I am joyfully watching the energetic endeavours of our members as they challenge themselves to achieve brilliant victories on the grand stage of the world. Together let's resolve to open the way for the boundless and everlasting development of kosen-rufu, our sights set on the glorious goal of the 100th anniversary of the Soka Gakkai's founding (in 2030).

"In the broadest sense, all people are Bodhisattvas of the Earth; in the depths of their lives they are seeking the Mystic Law. With this conviction firmly in our hearts, let's confidently share the Daishonin's Buddhism and great philosophy of human revolution with those around us."
SGI Newsletter No. 8080, Setting Our Sights on the 100th Anniversary of the Soka Gakkai's Founding, from the September 5th, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated Sep.10th, 2010
