-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all of my dear SGI friends,
who are at the very forefront of kosen-rufu,
let's take on every challenge and win in every one of them!
Let's create a great tidal wave of victories,
throughout Japan and the world,
and inspire others to follow our lead.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Therefore when we speak of withdrawing or departing, it
refers to a 'departure that is not a departure.'"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"To one of his trustworthy lay disciples, the Daishonin writes: 'Can it be
that Shakyamuni Buddha or the Bodhisattvas of the Earth have entered into
your body? I entrust you with the propagation of Buddhism in your province'
(WND-1, 1117). Carrying out kosen-rufu in our communities is the sacred task
entrusted to us directly by the Daishonin, the Buddha of the Latter Day.
That is why the wisdom and power of the Buddha to share the Law with many
others flows vibrantly in our chapters, districts, and groups, which are
striving in the same spirit as the Daishonin. There is absolutely no doubt
that capable Bodhisattvas of the Earth will continue to joyously emerge, and
that the heavenly deities will always staunchly protect us.

"The activities of SGI members everywhere and their sincere contributions to
society are beacons of hope and reassurance for their local communities.

"Contribute to the enduring prosperity
of your beautiful communities,
through fostering harmonious relations,
enjoying long, fulfilling lives,
and bringing happiness to bloom."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"Where you stand, dig deep and pry!
Down there is the well."*
The very basis of what creates bonds of the heart, between us and our
neighbours, is nothing but sincerity and integrity.

* Quote by Friedrich Nietzsche, German philosopher

** My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda,
often said: "What matters is being firmly grounded. If
your feet aren't planted firmly on the ground, it's all
empty theory. Never lose your grounding in reality! Raise
the banner of the Mystic Law and keep your feet solidly
planted in the community. Those with strong community ties
will be the victors." (SGI Newsletter No. 7696, SGI

"A compassionate life
dedicated to working
for the welfare of
all living beings
is a joyous one.

"In his treatise 'The Opening of the Eyes,' Nichiren Daishonin writes: '[In
his earlier teachings, Shakyamuni Buddha] spoke of the present world as an
impure land. But now, in the 'Life Span' chapter [of the Lotus Sutra], he
has reversed this, revealing that this world is the true land' (WND-1,
256). Our communities are the 'true land' of our mission. We should,
therefore, not lament about the places where we find ourselves right now.
The challenge falls to us to transform them, through our own efforts, into
victorious Lands of Tranquil Light--realms of Buddhahood. Such is a way of
life based on the essential teaching of the Lotus Sutra."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It is important that leaders discern what the
decisive points for victory and success are.
Every single action that is apt and pertinent to each
situation we are in right now,
creates ten thousand waves for the cause of justice and truth.
Let's be the type of leaders who can take care of matters with
lightning speed.

"The places where
you are striving tirelessly
as worthy emissaries of the Buddha
are pure lands,
Buddha lands.

"As African environmental activist and Nobel Peace laureate Wangari Maathai
notes: 'A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky.' A tree that
sends its roots deep into the earth can grow in size and strength. The same
is true of both individuals and organisations. Those who drift around like
rootless plants are swept away by the current of the times. In order to
withstand even the most powerful storms, we must sink down solid roots into
the earth of our immediate communities.

"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, often said: 'What

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & daily Gosho Jan 27th + Daily Enc. Jan 28th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo
Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
SGI meetings are a grand stage upon which
each one of us has a chance to play a lead role!
The success of every meeting depends on the determination that each one of
us makes,
the personal experiences in faith that each of us brings along,
and the efforts we all make to work together in harmony and unity.
Playing out our respective parts, let's adorn our meetings, the noble
gathering of Buddhas*,
with victories and successes.

* If we examine the "Treasure Tower" chapter of the Lotus Sutra, we find
Shakyamuni Buddha, Many Treasures Buddha, and the Buddhas of the ten
directions who are emanations of Shakyamuni Buddha gathering together. And
why? As the sutra itself says, "Each . . . has come to this place on purpose
to make certain the Law will long endure."
(Opening of the Eyes Part I - WND-1, Page 286)

* "When the times are dark and gloomy--indeed, precisely at such times--we
should advance with dynamism and good cheer. We should strive to brighten
and lift the spirits of those around us. Soka Gakkai meetings should be the
most energetic, inspiring, and vibrant gatherings in the world. If the
meetings are filled with people who are tired and listless, thinking 'Not
another meeting,' 'Not another activity,' even their applause will sound
weary. [Laughter.] Meetings in the early days of our movement were
incredibly lively, and the applause, too, was always enthusiastic and
powerful. Such meetings are energizing, and that's good for our health, too.
(SGI Newsletter No. 7644, 22nd Soka Gakkai Headquarters Leaders Meeting,
Sep. 30th, 2008).

courage."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The English poet Robert Browning (1812-89) wrote: 'I was ever a fighter,'
and 'We fall to rise, [buffeted] to fight better.' I have treasured these
words since I was a youth.

"As you know, I have adhered to the challenging path of kosen-rufu since the
age of 19. Over those long years, I've faced harsh and bitter times. But one
who is dedicated to the mission of spreading the Mystic Law will be
protected by all of the benevolent forces in the universe. No way of life
could be more exhilarating than this.

"There is no defeat for those who practice the Mystic Law. One who is not
defeated is an eternal victor, a monarch of happiness, and a master of life.
This is what our Buddhist faith is for, and this is why we proceed along
this path. A veritable mountain of treasures and innumerable benevolent
deities joyfully await all who push ahead."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan 25th + Daily Enc. Jan 26th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, January, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Faith is, without question, the very source of absolute victory.
In our work, in our SGI activities,
let's all put forth our very best effort and play out
a thrilling drama of "making the impossible possible"!

* "Anyone would think that victory is impossible," Shin'ichi said, "and
that's probably how you feel right now. But don't forget this marvellous
Gohonzon we have. It has the power to transform what you'd normally think
impossible into something possible. Those who give up before they try don't
really know the power of the Mystic Law."

"As long as we look at our situation with only ordinary reason, there won't
be the slightest chance for us to win. But the Daishonin tells us plainly
that the Gohonzon has infinite power. The only question is whether or not we
believe him. If we think that we are really disciples of the Daishonin, we
first have to pray powerfully to carry out the kind of courageous practice
that can make the impossible possible."
(The Human Revolution, Vol. 10, "Determination" chapter)

"If you are half-hearted about your job, you can never put your full
strength into your religious activities,
either."

"Now is the time for you to clench your teeth and exert yourself both in
your work and in your faith, no matter how hard pressed you are. As the
Daishonin assures us, 'Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in
winter, but winter always turns to spring' (WND-I, p.536). Don't worry. The
Gohonzon knows everything. You are now in winter. To you it may seem to last
forever, but no winter ever fails to turn into spring. All you need to do
now is to muster your courage. I hope you'll do your best."

"This year will mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of American
President Abraham Lincoln (1809-65), who paved the way for the abolition of
slavery in the United States with his Emancipation Proclamation. One of the
qualities that characterised this outstanding leader was his humility and
unaffectedness.

"The American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919)
praised Lincoln's warm humanity, saying: 'I never met a great man who so
thoroughly made himself one with all men as Mr. Lincoln.' He also remarked:
'His manners were perfect because [they were] natural.... His attentions [to
others] were not graduated. They were the same to all, as deferential in
talking to the messenger boy as to [the secretary of state]. His charm lay
in the total absence of [pretension].... He was the most perfect democrat,
revealing in every word and act the equality of men.

"Genuine leaders in a democracy are humble and don't think they are better
than others. They listen to others and are dedicated to serving them."

"'If it [the oak] grows up snugly sheltered from the wind and weather, it

astonishment and admiration.'

"Offering a similar message, Mr. Toda once said to a youth division member:

"'As the Daishonin says, in the face of hardship 'the wise will rejoice
while the foolish will retreat' (WND-1, 637). You mustn't take the course of
the foolish. Use hardship as an opportunity to reflect upon yourself.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan 22nd + Daily Enc. Jan 23rd

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Gosho, the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin,
is the Buddhist scripture about winning.
"Buddhism primarily concerns itself with victory or defeat."*
If we engrave the Buddha's golden words deeply in our hearts,
it will definitely enable us to open up an "ever-victorious" path.

*"The Hero of the World" - WND-I, page 835

**"The Gosho is the Buddhist scripture for the Latter Day
of the Law."

"The sutra (the Great Collection Sutra) also describes the Latter Day as an
age of unceasing conflict in society. In short, it is a critical time when
both Buddhism and society have reached a deadlock and that, if left in such
a state, will likely lead to further confusion and societal collapse.

"Nichiren Daishonin saw the Japan of his day as the exact description of the
Latter Day illustrated in the sutra. He thus searched for a way to enable
people living in such an age to change their lives fundamentally and realise
absolute happiness, and at the same time transform society. And his
discoveries are just as relevant today."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I hope our leaders will be people who are liked and admired by many. Those
of you who are veteran leaders have now reached a fine age. Now everything
hinges on whether you can feel a warm affection and desire to treasure the
younger members much in the way grandparents dote on their grandchildren.
Those who have this spirit can truly be called worthy seniors. Those who don
't will only lose out in the end.

"I call on everyone to praise their juniors. Commend them, encourage them,
and greet them warmly. Don't angrily berate them or look down on them. Get
on well with each other as brothers and sisters. I hope you will all take
this to heart.

"It's also important for juniors to show respect to their seniors. Sometimes
there may be leaders whom you don't like, but the important thing is to
unite with them for the sake of kosen-rufu.

"I wish to remind those of you who are senior in years to absolutely do your
utmost to support and protect your juniors. It is my dearest hope that the
Gakkai will always advance together as one, big, happy and harmonious Soka
family."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan 20th + Daily Enc. Jan 21st

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo
Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The lives of each and every one of us are perfect embodiments
of the Buddhist principle of "cherry, plum, peach and damson blossoms"*.
Be assured that each one of us has a special, unique mission that only we
ourselves can fulfil.
Advance boldly along your chosen path in life
and shine brilliantly like kings and queens of happiness!

*"When one comes to realise and see that each thing -- the cherry, the plum,
the peach, the damson -- in its own entity, without undergoing any change,
possesses the eternally endowed three bodies, then this is what is meant by
the word ryo, 'to include' or all-inclusive." (Ongi kuden - Gosho Zenshu,
page 784, The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 200) )

* How often do you feel that you aren't good enough? How many times have you
felt that because of who you are, you won't be able to succeed or because of
your background or lifestyle you won't be accepted? Most people feel this
way at one time or another. When we are faced with an obstacle or challenge,
our insecurities rise up within us. Some of this fear is of being different,
but what is important is how we express our differences and how we accept
others' differences.... SGI President Daisaku Ikeda says, "Nichiren
Daishonin's Buddhism deeply respects each person's individuality, situation
and character and shows the way to display one's particular abilities to the
fullest"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan 19th + Words of the Week Jan 19th - 25th

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and
"Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, January 19th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
When we go out, take a bath, etc.,
let's be careful about the sudden change in temperature.
Let's make sure to remind ourselves that "Hey we're going out into the cold,
we need to take all the right precautions."
Our health is also protected by our strong determination.

* We have said this before, but it is especially important
for the elderly to be careful in cold weather when they go
from a heated room into a cold room or go from indoors to
outdoors. The former is of particular concern in Japan,
where most homes are not centrally heated and rooms, such
as the kitchen and bathroom tend to be very cold in
winter. (Humanism and the Art of Medicine by Daisaku
Ikeda, page 194)

Monday, January 19th, 2009
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"No matter how earnestly Nichiren prays for you, if you
lack faith, it will be like trying to set fire to wet
tinder. Spur yourself to muster the power of faith."

(The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra - The Writings of
Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 1000) Selection source:
"Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, January 19th, 2009

January 19th-25th, 2009
---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
Let's chant daimoku to achieve kosen-rufu, sincerely
and seriously.
Let's be perfectly united with the spirit of "many in
body but one in mind."
Let's continually base our actions on the selfless spirit
of "never begrudging our bodies or lives."*
What is important is to have the same faith, the same prayer, as our
mentor, committing ourselves together to the same cause.

* fushaku shinmyo (Japanese) - "never begrudging our
bodies or lives" as in the passage "But although it will
be difficult to teach and convert them, we will summon up
the power of great patience and will read and recite this
sutra, embrace, preach and copy it, offering it many kinds
of alms and never begrudging our bodies or lives."
("Encouraging Devotion" chapter of the Lotus Sutra)

** The ultimate meaning of faith is to treasure
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo even more highly than our own lives.
It is to devote ourselves entirely to achieving the
widespread propagation of the Mystic Law. Concretely
speaking, this means advancing together with the SGI,
thoroughly protecting the SGI, and practicing together
with the SGI, in both times of hardship and times of joy.
Apart from the SGI, there is no kosen-rufu of the Mystic
Law. (The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, Volume 3, page 146)

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan 18th + Daily Enc. Jan 19th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, January 18th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"There may not be a second time to meet."
With such determination,
let's form a bond of friendship with the person
who is right in front of our very eyes.
Let's share our thoughts on justice,
(of fairness and what is important in this world).

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"...wherever we spread the Mystic Law, all Buddhas and bodhisattvas
throughout the universe will gather joyously to praise and protect us. The
teachings subsequently expounded by Shakyamuni in the Ceremony in the
Air--which begins with the 'threefold transformation of the land'--clearly
attest to this.

"Kosen-rufu is the process of spreading the Mystic Law in this troubled,
strife-filled world. Dedicating our lives to kosen-rufu means taking on the
struggle inherent in the 'threefold transformation of the land'--the
struggle to fundamentally transform society--a place afflicted by the three
poisons of greed, anger, and foolishness--into a Buddha land.

"And, further, from the standpoint of life-condition or state of being, the
'threefold transformation of the land' is a demonstration of the boundless
virtues possessed by the two Buddhas Shakyamuni and Many Treasures. It also
represents the unification or merging of all the Buddhas throughout the
three existences who are emanations of Shakyamuni. Buddhas and bodhisattvas
from every corner of the universe, seeking the Law and their teacher, travel
from afar to assemble in the saha world. This gives us an indication of the
towering life-state of Shakyamuni, brimming with infinite wisdom and
compassion, as he preached the Lotus Sutra. This is a testament to the
greatness of the Mystic Law that underlies this life-state--a life-state
that all of us who dedicate our lives to the Mystic Law are also able to
attain."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan 17th + Daily Enc. Jan 18th

* Apologies for the slight delay today. Hope you have a great day!

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, January 17th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
In order for us to be victorious and successful
it's imperative that we be absolutely sincere in what we are doing
and that we muster up all the courage that we can!
It's also important that we develop the type of conviction
that is completely unshakable, under any circumstances.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"...from the perspective of Nichiren Buddhism, the moment we decide to
transform our environment, our lives undergo a tremendous change. This is
because when we forge a deep and unwavering resolve to embark on this
undertaking, we immediately vanquish all of the three categories of
illusions.* As a result, our environment, or the land, also changes without
fail.

"The 'threefold transformation of the land' essentially represents the
challenge of doing our human revolution to smash through the tiny shell of
our lesser self..This means vigorously chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and
courageously initiating efforts for kosen-rufu with the same spirit as our
teacher or mentor in faith. Victory lies in taking action right here and
now, not sometime in the future."

SGI Newsletter No. 7688, THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN AND THE
MENTOR-DISCIPLE RELATIONSHIP [NEW SERIES] {2} The "Threefold Transformation
of the Land" --Part 2 {of 2}, from the Dec. 12th, 2008, issue of the Seikyo
Shimbun, translated Jan 15th, 2009

* T'ien-t'ai also interpreted the threefold transformation as corresponding
to the eradication of each of the three categories of illusions,
respectively--illusions of thought and desire, illusions as innumerable as
particles of dust and sand, and illusions about the true nature of
existence. He viewed it as being symbolic of triumphing over these
illusions and manifesting the state of Buddhahood.

The important point, however, lies in the fact that Shakyamuni proceeded in
swift succession, without any interval, to transform first one sphere of
lands, and then a second, and then a third. Great change can only be
realized through constant and continual effort.

"Those who strive to 'establish the correct teaching for the peace of the
land' as taught by Nichiren Daishonin and achieve kosen-rufu will no doubt
face obstacles and hardships. As the Daishonin writes: 'Without tribulation
there would be no votary of the Lotus Sutra' (WND-1, 33). The Daishonin
teaches that the world is ruled by the devil king of the sixth heaven. The
term 'devil' indicates the negative functions of life that cause unhappiness
and misfortune. Discrimination, domination, the desire to harm and kill--all
these are due to the devilish functions operating within the human heart and
mind.

"Buddhism teaches that the origin of these devilish functions is the
fundamental darkness or ignorance residing at the very foundation of life.
The life-state of the Buddha is the key to overcoming this ignorance or
darkness. Kosen-rufu is the struggle to awaken the life-state of Buddhahood
in all people and vanquish the darkness and ignorance that is the root of
all unhappiness. Because of that, wherever kosen-rufu is advancing, there is
a tremendous struggle going on between the Buddha and devilish functions,
which appears in the form of persecutions of those who uphold and spread the
Mystic Law."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Goshoi Jan 13th + Daily Enc. Jan 14th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo
Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
I would like all of our leaders to be brimming with the spirit to challenge,
to boldly take on anything and ensure victory in all of our endeavours.
Never forget to resolutely and triumphantly advance along the path of mentor
and disciple,
that has been built upon a succession of victories after victories.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Misfortune comes from one's mouth and ruins one, but fortune comes from
one's heart and makes one worthy of respect."

(New Year's Gosho - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 1137)
Selection source: President Ikeda's Speech at the Headquarters' Leaders
Meeting held on January 8th, 2009 and covered in the January 13th edition of
the Seikyo Shimbun.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Tolstoy said that when we look up into the heavens, we see infinite numbers
of stars and planets, similarly, when we look inside ourselves, we see
something that we call the spirit, and realise that it is even greater and
more wondrous than the star-filled universe. This is an idea that has much
in common with the Buddhist view of life and the cosmos.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Winter always turns to spring' (WND-1, 536).
Our Russian members, bracing themselves against winter blizzards, are
especially fond of these words. From within our lives, we can bring the sun
to shine forth, undefeated by the adversities of winter, and we can bring
the flowers of spring into bloom."
