"In reality, our ever-changing state of mind is itself, an entity of the Mystic Law. And though we may be told that our life is an entity of the Mystic Law, it is 'fundamental ignorance'* that prevents us from believing this. Such ignorance is the cause of all suffering, which only the 'sharp sword' of faith can dispel (cf.OTT, 119–20)."

"Our mind, our life at each moment, is an ineffable thing, without colour or form and transcending the categories of being and non-being, existence and non-existence. The Buddhist sutras teach that 'a single person in the course of a single day has eight million four thousand thoughts' (WND –2, 307). Our momentary thoughts or states of mind, arise and fade in constant succession, triggered by various causes and conditions.

"The question is whether we elevate these constantly changing life moments, and direct them towards good, towards happiness or allow them to spiral in a cycle of suffering that leads to a life state of hell."

Nichiren Daishonin called this truth the Mystic Law and taught that by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, all people, just as they are, can attain Buddhahood in this lifetime without fail."

"Faust's words express the spirit to boldly take on life's turbulent challenges. Isn't this the same spirit that has pulsed in the Soka Gakka since its earliest days?"

Buddhism expounds,
"Like the lotus flower in the water"*.
Like the lotus flower that blooms 

unsullied by the muddy waters in
which it grows,
let's live out our lives 

by fulfilling our unique missions 

in reality, 
full of hardships.
In such a life, 

a large flower of happiness 

is most certain to bloom!

*When we become lotuses, we can change the muddy swamp of earthly desires into joyous enlightenment. The "Emerging from the Earth" chapter describes the Bodhisattvas of the Earth as being "like the lotus flower in the water".  As Bodhisattvas of the Earth, we dwell in the "swamp" of society; we certainly do not seek to escape from reality. And what's more, our lives are in no way stained or tainted by society. Why is this? It is because we never forget our mission.

"The Soka Gakkai guideline of 'Faith for a harmonious family'* is derived directly from the teachings of the Lotus Sutra. Families of all kinds are able to enjoy the wonderful benefit of the Mystic Law and proceed along the path of eternal happiness without fail.

"We are connected to our families by deep karmic bonds. Let's avoid getting into arguments with them about faith. Instead, let's brightly and compassionately illuminate them with the warm light of our daimoku, whatever happens. Let's make uplifting melodies of hope resound from our homes and flow out into our communities and society."
