[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] Words of the Week April 30-May 6, 2018 + Daily Gosho April 30 & Daily Encouragement May 1st

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

April 30th - May 6th, 2018
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
Hooray for our glorious May 3rd
(Soka Gakkai Day)
and Hooray for SGI Mother's Day!
Just as the Daishonin's declared,
"Here I will make a great vow,"*
with the life-state of the Buddha
from time without beginning,
let's all start anew,
together with our youth
who have the spirit of
"from the indigo, an even deeper blue."**

*"The Opening of the Eyes" - WND-I, page 280
**In his Great Concentration and Insight, the sixth-century Chinese Buddhist teacher T'ien-t'ai used the phrase "from the indigo, an even deeper blue." This employs the example of the ancient process of dyeing cloth using a blue dye made from the indigo plant, where the dyed cloth takes on a deeper blue than the plant from which it was derived due to repeated immersion in the dye. In the same way, if the mentor is likened to the indigo plant, by absorbing the mentor's teachings, the disciple can achieve an even more splendid "blue." This illustrates that the ultimate goal of the relationship is to enable the disciple to surpass the mentor.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"A woman who takes this efficacious medicine will be surrounded and protected by these four great bodhisattvas at all times. When she rises to her feet, so too will the bodhisattvas, and when she walks along the road, they will also do the same. She and they will be as inseparable as a body and its shadow, as fish and water, as a voice and its echo, or as the moon and its light."

(On Offering Prayers to the Mandala of the Mystic Law
- WND, Vol. 1, page 415)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"To be treated well is, of course, essential to a persons experience of dignity. But even more important is being looked to by others as an irreplaceable source of spiritual support. It is this that brings our dignity to an even brighter luster. The significance of such bonds remains unchanged even by grave illness or dependence on others for nursing care. Being surrounded by people who derive joy and happiness from your presence is itself a source of dignity."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Lotus Sutra depicts a series of scenes in which Shakyamuni's disciples, moved upon hearing his teaching of the dignity of life, one by one begin to voice their vow to live by this principle. This sets off a chain reaction of jubilation—described in such phrases as 'their hearts were filled with great rejoicing' and 'their minds danced with joy' — by which will deepen their sense of the ultimate value and dignity of life.

"The People's movement of the SGI is powered by this same sense of mutually shared joy. It arises from efforts to support each person across differences, so they may continue advancing as they take on life's challenges. It flows from witnessing friends shine with dignity as they persevere in the face of difficulty, from celebrating another's growth and progress as though it were our own. This sharing and mutual savouring of joy has been the wellspring of our movement."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] April 27th, 2018 To My Friends & Daily Gosho plus April 28th Daily Encouragement

A translation of "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Golden Week in Japan
is just around the corner.
Let's use this vacation time as
an opportunity to meet and bond with people
whom we don't normally
get an opportunity to interact with,
such as our relatives and old friends!
Initiating many new episodes
of interactions with people
let's spend each day meaningfully!

* Golden Week in Japan starts from April 28th through May 6th with several national holidays in this period. May 1st & 2nd are normal school days though, but many working people use this chance to use up their "holiday allocation" and take time off.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Passive tolerance is far removed from coexistence in the truest sense. There is a danger that people's actions will remain superficial and minimal--limited to acts such as permitting others to live in the same neighbourhood or complying with the relevant laws and rules. Such passive tolerance falls short of leading people to actively recognise the common humanity in those they perceive as different, making it an ineffective counter to exclusionist impulses in times of heightened social tensions. This has impelled a fresh approach, led by the UN, to create a human rights culture based on jointly working to transform public awareness towards a society where all can live in dignity.

"In Buddhism, we find the phrase: 'Authentic joy is that which is shared by oneself and others.' Based on this principle, I believe that the wellspring for creating a society of mutually enriching coexistence can be found in a way of life where we experience joy in seeing one another's dignity radiate its full potential."

A translation of "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

Thursday, April 26th, 2018
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
When we take action
for the sake of others,
greater energy is brought forth
from within rather than
doing things just for our own sake's.
This is the way of life of Soka.
Together, let's live out our lives
with strong conviction and faith!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Though numerous, the Japanese will find it difficult to accomplish anything, because they are divided in spirit. In contrast, although Nichiren and his followers are few, because they are different in body, but united in mind, they will definitely accomplish their great mission of widely propagating the Lotus Sutra. Though evils may be numerous, they cannot prevail over a single great truth."

"Therefore, those who become Nichiren's disciples and lay believers should realise the profound karmic relationship they share with him and spread the Lotus Sutra as he does. Being known as a votary of the Lotus Sutra is a bitter, yet unavoidable, destiny."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"To a certain degree, it is only natural to feel a sense of attachment to a group composed of people with whom one shares common attributes. It is likewise perhaps to be expected that we should feel some apprehension at welcoming people of different national origins into the community we call home. However, we must recognise how such feelings can lead to exclusionist behaviour and human rights violations as feelings of enmity and hostility are externalised in hate speech and other forms of discrimination.

"While increasing our capacity to connect with others, the rise of a post-industrial information society in recent years has also led to a phenomenon where people only associate with those who share the same frame of reference. Among the causes for what is known as the 'filter bubble' are data searches that return information already attuned to the user's preferences, thus obscuring other sources. Gradually, without realising, one is enveloped in an isolating membrane of pre-selected information.

"What is troubling about this phenomenon is the degree to which it can impact a person's understanding of social issues. Even if one actively seeks out information on an issue of particular concern, the content encountered on websites and social media feeds will end up bearing a close resemblance to the views one already holds. In this way, from the outset one is distanced from differing opinions, which never become the object of careful consideration.

"Internet activist Eli Pariser cautions: 'In an age when shared information is the bedrock of shared experience, the filter bubble is a centrifugal force, pulling us apart.' The ability to make good decisions depends on situational awareness and context, and yet, he writes, 'in the filter bubble, you don't get 360 degrees—and you might not get more than one,' warning us of the adverse affects of our restricted outlooks."
