[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 29th June To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 30th June Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's try to help people from all walks of life
to establish a connection with Nichiren Buddhism.
The seed of the Mystic Law planted in someone's heart
is certain to grow and blossom some day.
What we need at the core of our efforts is courage and sincerity.

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbour doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood. Do not have doubts simply because heaven does not lend you protection. Do not be discouraged because you do not enjoy an easy and secure existence in this life."
(The Opening of the Eyes - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 283) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", June 29th, 2011

Thursday, June 30th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It is essential to talk with others one-on-one. The Lotus Sutra states:

"'If one of these good men or good women in the time after I have passed into extinction is able to secretly expound the Lotus Sutra to one person, even one phrase of it, then you should know that he or she is the envoy of the Thus Come One. He has been dispatched by the Thus Come One and carries out the Thus Come One's Work.'
(LSOC10, 200)

"This famous passage from 'The Teacher of the Law' (10th) chapter encapsulates the way of actual practice for disciples who aspire to carry on the work of their teacher.

"People's lives are infinitely varied. Some of your friends may have problems, while others are striving to realise a dream or goal they have set for themselves. Still others may have lost their way. The important thing is giving your full attention to the person in front of you, and to continue making sincere efforts to talk with them. Everything starts from there. Sometimes it may be all you can do to summon the courage to tell another person: 'The Daishonin's Buddhism is great.' But that, too, constitutes the commendable act of sharing this teaching.

"There may be times when the person you are talking to isn't really listening to what you are saying. Yet even in those cases, your sincerity will touch and resound with that person's inherent Buddha nature. From the profound perspective of life itself, your efforts plant the seed of Buddhahood in their lives, which will eventually sprout, grow, and blossom when the time is right. This is the principle of 'sowing the seeds by letting people hear the teaching.' It is important that we continue to talk with others about Buddhism, whether or not anyone else knows of our efforts. Those who do so are supremely noble emissaries of the Buddha who are actually carrying out the Buddha's work of enabling all people to attain enlightenment."
SGI Newsletter No. 8266, Our Brilliant Path To Victory By Shin'ichi Yamamoto, The Fresh Development of Youth--Part 2 [of 2], translated June 27th, 2011, from the May 26th, 2011, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun.

* Pres. Ikeda had an article in today's national English newspaper - The Japan Times. Check it out online at
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/eo20110628a3.html

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's revolutionise the way we use our time effectively!
Closely adhering to times for activities,
let's clearly define what our goals
and objectives are for each meeting, including our planning meetings,
and make every one of them of value and meaning!
Let us spend every precious day wisely and fruitfully.

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"For this reason, when the bodhisattva Never Disparaging makes his bow of obeisance to the four kinds of believers, the Buddha nature inherent in the our kinds of believers of overbearing arrogance is bowing in obeisance to the bodhisattva Never Disparaging. It is like the situation when one faces a mirror and makes a bow of obeisance: the image in the mirror likewise makes a bow of obeisance to oneself."
(Ongi kuden - Gosho Zenshu, page 769, The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 165)
Selection source:"Together with the Gosho - President Ikeda's encouragement", Seikyo Shimbun, June 21st, 2011

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I am sure there are some members who are so busy with work that they find it hard to participate in Soka Gakkai activities. I would like to ask the leaders to warmly encourage and support them.

"In a letter to the lay priest Takahashi, a leader of kosen-rufu in his community, Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'How could I... think lightly of those who, even for a day, have acted as allies and extended their sympathy to me?' (WND-1, 608). The Daishonin's compassion is truly profound and immense.

"Those who participate in or support our activities even in a small way, or who sympathise with our goals, all form a connection with the Daishonin's Buddhism. That is why it is so important to expand our circle of friends by courageously reaching out to others and engaging them in dialogue. Such efforts will call forth one Bodhisattva of the Earth after another."

If we really do have genuine care and concern for our friends,
then our words will definitely echo our thoughts
and touch their hearts.
Let's, therefore, make sure they hear those voices of hope
and concern!

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 24th June To my Friends & Daily Gosho + 25th June Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, June 24th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To take action together and to talk with each other --
this is how to develop the skills and capabilities of new people.
I hope that as leaders we will always enthusiastically support
our Youth Division members' efforts
to introduce this Buddhism to others
and at the same time happily help the growth
of our Future Division members
(primary and secondary school students).

Friday, June 24th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"If in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of millions of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three Buddha bodies with which we are eternally endowed. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is just such a 'diligent' practice."
(Ongi kuden - Gosho Zenshu, page 790, The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 214)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, June , 2011

Saturday, June 25th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'When the bodhisattva Never Disparaging makes his bow of obeisance to the four kinds of believers, the Buddha nature inherent in the four kinds of believers of overbearing arrogance bows in obeisance to the bodhisattva Never Disparaging. It is like the situation when one faces a mirror and makes a bow of obeisance: the image in the mirror likewise makes a bow of obeisance to oneself.'
From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 165.

"No one is stronger than a person who has steadfastly chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the very essence of Nichiren Daishonin's teachings. There is nothing more honourable or empowering than chanting for the happiness of others. Our capacity to chant for the happiness of others itself is a reflection of the life-state of Buddhahood.

"When we change, those in our environment will definitely change, too. Conversations in which we share the greatness of the Daishonin's Buddhism are infinitely profound interactions that vibrantly summon forth the Buddha nature in our own life and the lives of others."
SGI Newsletter No. 8263, LIVING THE GOSHO: WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FROM SGI PRESIDENT IKEDA, (36) When We Change, Our Environment Changes, translated June 22nd, 2011, from the June 21st, 2011, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 23rd June To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 24th June Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"I am definitely going to win!"
"I'll certainly find a way forwards!"
It's when we have this sort of deep, inner resolve
that things start to happen and a new history of victory unfolds.
Let's always advance with daimoku
as the starting point of our actions.

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,'cannot be false in any way."
(The Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 217)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Believe in the Gohonzon, the supreme object of devotion in all of Jambudvipa [the entire world]. Be sure to strengthen your faith, and receive the protection of Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, and the Buddhas of the ten directions.'
From 'The True Aspect of All Phenomena' (WND-1, 386).

"Second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda used to say quite matter-of-factly: 'We deliberately chose to be born poor and sick so that we could spread the Mystic Law [through demonstrating the transformative power of faith to others.]'

"Our current circumstances are like a role that we have taken on in this lifetime in order to fulfil our mission in accord with our eternal vow to lead others to happiness. Since we have embraced faith in the Gohonzon, the supreme object of devotion in the entire world, there is no adverse situation we cannot overcome. Let's activate the protective functions of the universe[by powerfully chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] and win without fail."
SGI Newsletter No. 8261, LIVING THE GOSHO: WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FROM SGI PRESIDENT IKEDA, (35) The Unsurpassed Good Fortune and Benefit of Faith, translated June 21st, 2011 from the June 17th, 2011, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai daily newspaper)

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd June To My Friends & 23rd June Daily Enc.

*"Daily Gosho" will be back tomorrow - some of our team are going on vacation and we have to wait for them to settle in.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
In various areas of Japan
we have been experiencing considerable amounts of rain,
please therefore be on your guard in regards to flooding,
landslides or any other related dangers.
For those delivering our publications in these conditions
please make sure that your safety is the number one priority.
We are all chanting that you will stay safe and in good health.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In our dialogue titled 'The Unifying Power of Culture,' Chairperson Gao Zhanxiang of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society (CCPS) enumerated the five important requirements for the leaders of a new age:

(1) the spirit to seek capable people;
(2) the ability to appreciate capable people;
(3) the daring to put capable people to work;
(4) the sense to foster capable people; and
(5) the broad-mindedness to welcome capable people.

"The key to an organisation's growth and development and the mark of a leader's true ability lie in how many capable people they can foster and enable to give full play to their potential and abilities.

"The 'humanitarian competition' envisioned by Soka Gakkai founder Tsunesaburo Makiguchi is concerned with how many talented individuals dedicated to peace and justice can be fostered.

"When new leadership appointments in the SGI are made, those vacating the positions should support the new leaders wholeheartedly, rejoicing and taking pride in their successes as if they were their own and making even greater efforts together to promote everyone's growth and development."

SGI Newsletter No. 8256, OUR BRILLIANT PATH TO VICTORY, The Fresh Development of Youth--Part 1 [of 2], translated June 16th , 2011, from the May 25th, 2011, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun.

It's important that we really treasure

The first step to making good friends with the neighbours
is a good clear cheerful greeting.

starting with our immediate surroundings.
Let's be winners through acting positively

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 18th June To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 19th June Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, June 18th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The main contributing factors
for the successful development of the kosen-rufu movement are:
sincerity, an unwavering spirit, wisdom and perseverance.
It is by our constant painstaking efforts to develop these areas in our lives
that our lives truly do blossom
with the magnificent blooms of victory and success!

Saturday, June 18th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo."
(On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 4)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, June 18th, 2011

Sunday, June 19th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Could not this illness of your husband's be the Buddha's design, because the Vimalakirti and Nirvana sutras both teach that sick people will surely attain Buddhahood? Illness gives rise to the resolve to attain the way.'
From 'The Good Medicine for All Ills' (WND-1, 937).

"Illness does not equal unhappiness. Illness itself can provide us with an opportunity to develop a more profound state of life and to fundamentally transform our karma. This is the way of faith for attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime. Therefore, though we may experience ill-health, it's important that we stay strong and resolute in spirit.

"The Daishonin affirms that 'sick people will surely attain Buddhahood.' We can definitely transform poison into medicine. With the lion's roar of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can triumph over all illness.

"I am wholeheartedly chanting for the well-being and long lives of all of our members."

SGI Newsletter No.. 8257, LIVING THE GOSHO: WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FROM SGI PRESIDENT IKEDA (34) Never Be Defeated by Ill-health, translated June 17th, 2011 from the June 16th, 2011, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 17th June To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 18th June Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, June 17th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's always be sure to show much we appreciate
the family members of our members who are so kind
to offer their homes for our meetings.
It is very important for us not to talk too loudly outside at night
and to be careful about how and where we park our bicycles
so that we won't disturb the neighbours in the vicinity.
It's also important
that we don't unnecessarily waste any energy in their homes.
Let's take great care
of these extremely precious castles of kosen-rufu!

"Even a feeble person will not stumble if those supporting him are strong, but a person of considerable strength, when alone, may fall down on an uneven path."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Kosen-rufu is a struggle between the forces of the Buddha and devilish functions. As long as we maintain the unity of 'many in body, one in mind,' we can defeat all devilish functions and promote the spread of the Mystic Law. Unity is an eternal theme of kosen-rufu. The Daishonin took great pains to ensure that his followers could work together harmoniously.

"To be 'one in mind' as practitioners of the Daishonin's Buddhism means to share the spirit or commitment to energetically advance kosen-rufu. This describes the heart of people uniting together in the grand objective of realising the Buddha's wish of the widespread propagation of the Mystic Law. Being 'one in mind' essentially means for each of us to make the heart or intent of the Buddha our own, which gives rise to true unity.

"Negative forces unite together to oppose the Lotus Sutra and its practitioners, but their partnership is invariably fragile and fleeting because their aim is not enduring or universal. When the forces of good that champion the eternal Mystic Law are strong, such negative alliances always disintegrate in the end.

"By bringing forth our Buddha nature through chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and awakening to our vow for kosen-rufu from the remote past, we who uphold the Mystic Law can demonstrate the true unity of Bodhisattvas of the Earth."
SGI Newsletter No. 8247, LEARNING FROM THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN: THE TEACHINGS FOR VICTORY, [27] 'A Father Takes Faith,' Unity and Human Revolution Are the Keys to Victory in Our Efforts for Kosen-rufu, from the April 2011 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translated June 6th, 2011.

Responding with lightning speed,
based on a sharp discernment of the situation,
is the very lifeline,
the very essence of what it means to be a "leader."

who can promptly and sincerely respond to the needs
of the hearts and minds of the people.

"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, once said:

"'The brothers Pure Storehouse and Pure Eye convinced their father to embrace faith in the correct teaching by demonstrating the power of the Mystic Law in their own lives. Likewise, there's no need for you to rush in and start lecturing your family members on the principles of Buddhism. Even if it takes time, first strive to become a fine person and put your parents' minds at ease. I want you to become people who really care for, respect, and appreciate their parents.'

"Mr. Toda's guideline of 'faith for a harmonious family' articulates one of our crucial goals as practitioners of the Daishonin's Buddhism. Mr. Toda also said that we mustn't allow our Buddhist practice to become a source of contention or conflict in our family. Sincerity is of prime importance. We must always be sincere and respectful in our dealings with others. We must take the lead by being positive, cheerful, and optimistic ourselves, and have the wisdom and compassion to warmly support and embrace those around us. Our continued efforts to cultivate such harmonious relations in our environment are the key to victory in faith, and they shine with the wisdom of Buddhism.

"When our individual human revolutions and family revolutions as practitioners of the Mystic Law in the Latter Day give fresh prominence to the Lotus Sutra's teaching that all of us are Buddhas and deserving of the highest respect, it will be possible to realise a fundamental change in the karma of our strife-ridden times. Eventually, this hope-filled philosophy, restoring a warm current of compassion to this evil latter age, will spread throughout society and the world."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Buddhism is all about the "mystic principle of true cause."*
It's that strong determination that we are burning with right now
that will definitely shape and open up our future.
With the spirit of "It's what I do from now,"
let us create fresh, new advancements!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"When do the three obstacles and four devils appear? The Daishonin says that they manifest when our 'practice progresses and understanding grows' (WND-1, 501). They descend, in other words, when we are making steady progress on the path to attaining Buddhahood. He writes:

"'There is definitely something extraordinary in the ebb and flow of the tide, the rising and setting of the moon, and the way in which summer, autumn, winter, and spring give way to each other. Something uncommon also occurs when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood. At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat.' (WND-1, 637)

When we realise that the appearance of the three obstacles and four devils signals that we are on the verge of achieving a profound inner transformation in our lives, we will be ready and eager to rise to the challenges they present, our hearts filled with courage and self-assurance. In contrast, if we allow ourselves to be intimidated and defeated by these obstacles and devilish functions, we will end up succumbing to despair and doubt and pull back from the path leading to Buddhahood. The Daishonin's statement, 'The wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat' (WND-1, 637), represents an eternal maxim for our Buddhist practice."

Recently, there has been an increasing number of accidents
involving bicycles.
Let's all be extra careful on wet roads during this rainy season.
Please also remember that using a mobile phone or umbrella
while riding a bicycle is strictly forbidden!
The only way for us to prevent accidents
is to proactively remind each other of such important facts,
during meetings and other get-togethers, over and over again!

Selection source: "Myoji no Gen", Seikyo Shimbun, June 14th, 2011

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The crucial thing in our struggle against the three obstacles and four devils is to always remain on the offensive, ready to vanquish negative functions when they appear. In his letters to the Ikegami brothers, the Daishonin writes: 'Be...fearless' (WND-1, 498); 'You must not falter in the least' (WND-2, 597); and 'You should not have the slightest fear in your heart' (WND-1, 637). If we're passive and retreat, the devilish functions will only intensify; but if we switch to the offensive and keep up our struggle against them with powerful daimoku, they will scatter at the sound of our fearless lion's roar.

"Ultimately, courageous faith is indispensable in the struggle against devilish functions. A readiness to keep exerting oneself--a firm and unwavering resolve--is important. This is why the Daishonin instructs the younger Ikegami brother Munenaga: 'In the final analysis, what you should do is resolve to pursue the Buddha way single-mindedly just as your [elder] brother is doing' (WND-1, 637); 'You should resolve to give [your all]' (cf. WND-1, 639); 'You must raise your voice all the more and admonish [those who slander]' (WND-2, 597); and 'You should confront your father and declare [your position to him]' (WND-1, 637).

"The struggle against devilish functions polishes and deepens our faith. And with the 'sharp sword' of faith that we have polished through such trials, we can triumph over all obstacles and negative workings. That strong faith, that dauntless spirit, is the very essence of the life-state of Buddhahood. Through our efforts to forge a solid, unshakable self through our Buddhist practice and realise our human revolution, we can gain brilliant and indestructible experiences in faith that will inspire our fellow members around the globe, and will continue to be retold and passed on down through the generations."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 12th June - 19th June Words of the Week & Daily Gosho + 14th June Daily Enc.

* There is no "To My Friends" today as there is a Japanese Press Holiday but we have held over "Words of the Week" which was published yesterday to cover the gap. All the best!

right where our feet are!
Let's cherish every person whom we happen to meet

(inviting our neighbours and friends,)
may blossom after blossom of friendships appear everywhere!

Monday, June 13th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The frightening and insidious thing about negative influences--or what Buddhism refers to as 'evil friends' --is that they manifest in truly diverse forms to try to destroy our faith itself.

"...Faith is an unremitting struggle against obstacles and devilish functions. The Daishonin's consistent message to the Ikegami brothers is to clearly recognise the 'three obstacles and four devils' and to keep forging ahead without fear. Fear destroys faith. If we retreat or regress in faith, our lives will be swamped by devilish functions. The key to victory is summed up in the Daishonin's injunction: 'Strengthen your faith day by day and month after month' (WND-1, 997).

"The Daishonin instructed the Ikegami brothers: 'You must grit your teeth and never slacken in your faith' (WND-1, 498). He also encouraged them to fight as fearlessly as he had (cf. WND-1, 498).

"Because faith is a relentless struggle against devilish functions that try to shake our hearts and lead us astray, we need to continually polish ourselves inside and rouse our courage. This is why the Daishonin urges again and again: 'Never slacken in your faith' (WND-1, 498), and 'You must not slacken in the least' (WND-2, 597). Genuine faith is forged through always pressing ahead with the spirit to strive with even greater strength and determination, to progress more today than yesterday and further still tomorrow than today."

Now, more than ever before,
is the time for us to interact and talk
with as many people as we possibly can.
The more we share this Buddhism with others,
the more we expand not only our own happiness but also that of others.
Patiently and with perseverance,
honestly and in our own unique way of speaking,
let's challenge ourselves as courageously as great lion kings do!

"'The Buddha, being truly worthy of respect, never judges by the size of one's offerings. In the past, the boy Virtue Victorious offered a mud pie to the Buddha, and was reborn as King Ashoka and ruled over all of Jambudvipa [the entire world]. A poor woman cut off her hair and sold it to buy oil [for the Buddha], and not even the winds sweeping down from Mount Sumeru could extinguish the flame of the lamp fed by this oil.'
From 'Reply to Onichi-nyo' (WND-1, 1089).

"The lamp fuelled by the poor woman's sincere offering of oil could not be extinguished by even the most violent winds. In the same way, it is your dedicated efforts, fuelled by the sincere desire for each person's happiness, that opens the way to lasting victory.

"No matter how fiercely the winds of adversity blow, they cannot put out the flame of good fortune that we have lit in our lives. Nor can the flame of the noble Mystic Law that we have lit in society ever be extinguished.

"Let's raise a cheer for the women's division! I wish to express my profound gratitude to you all."
