"'Around two hundred years and more into the Latter Day of the Law, I was the first to reveal as the banner of propagation of the Lotus Sutra this great mandala [the Gohonzon of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo) that even those such as Nagarjuna and Vasubanhu, T'ien-t'ai and Miao-lo were unable to express.'

– From the Real Aspect of the Gohonzon" (WND –1, 831).

"This profound intent of Nichiren Daishonin is embodied in the Soka Gakkai Joju Gohonzon* enshrined in the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu (in Shinanomachi, Tokyo).

"With this Gohonzon—requested by second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda—as the 'banner of propagation of the Lotus Sutra' (WND –1, 831), the Soka Gakkai has made steadfast efforts to  compassionately spread the Mystic Law and realise the Daishonin's ideal of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land.'

"The Gohonzon is the means by which all people can become happy. With the conviction 'what is there that cannot be achieved?' (WND –1, 412), let's continue moving forwards based on chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo infused with a vow for kosen-rufu."

* In addition to the words "For the Fulfilment of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu through the Compassionate Propagation of the Great Law," this Gohonzon also bears the inscription "To Be Permanently Enshrined in the Soka Gakkai" (Jpn. Soka Gakkai Joju). As a result, it is commonly called the Soka Gakkai Joju Gohonzon. It is also referred to as the Soka Gakkai Kosen-rufu Gohonzon.

"Nichiren Daishonin wrote many letters to a female disciple [the lay nun Ueno, the mother of Nanjo Tokimitsu], empathising with her profound grief over the loss of a beloved son and offering words of comfort and support.

"He says that family members who are connected by the Mystic Law are always together, transcending the boundaries of life and death, and can forever walk the path of eternity, happiness, true self and purity.

"The Soka Gakkai is a realm of encouragement brimming with the great compassion it has learned from Nichiren Daishonin. We meet and talk with our friends and fellow members, listen to their problems and struggles, share their pain and suffering and chant for their happiness. Let's continue to spread the light of hope through sincere dialogue.."

"Through the dedicated efforts and united commitment of our members everywhere, Nichiren Daishonin's predictions of the westward transmission of Buddhism and worldwide kosen-rufu have become a reality.

"Knowing that he risked persecution, the Daishonin nevertheless went ahead and publicly proclaimed his teaching (on April 28, 1253), for the sake of peace and happiness of all humankind. He is surely praising us most highly.

"Our shared journey to spread the Mystic Law will continue without cease. Let's always strive together in harmony and friendship as we continue to expand our network of Bodhisattvas of the Earth into the eternal future of the Latter Day of the Law."

To all of you who are challenging yourselves 
in the Young Men's Division training groups.
Your efforts to introduce others 
to Nichiren Buddhism 
is the most noble practice of all.
The Daishonin asserts,
"Those who hear even a single sentence 
or phrase of the Lotus Sutra
will attain Buddhahood without fail."
For the sake of our friend's happiness,
let's wholeheartedly engage in conversation 
that enables us 
to share the teachings of this Buddhism 
with them.

No matter how fiercely the winds of adversity rage around us, we will be dauntless and proudly stand firm. Courage is the heart of the Daishonin's disciples.

"He also writes in the same letter: 'Each and everyone of you should be certain deep in your heart' (WND –1, 764). With firm determination, let us forge ahead on the path to victory based on the shared vow of mentor and disciple!"

"'Although I, Nichiren, am not a man of wisdom, the Devil king of the sixth heaven has attempted to take possession of my body. But I have for some reason been taking such great care that he now no longer comes near me."

"Devilish functions sap people's life force and plunge them into unhappiness. They appear in various forms, seeking to take advantage at any opportunity. Here, Nichiren Daishonin states that he, himself, exercised great vigilance in order to keep such negative forces away.

"If we allow ourselves to be intimidated by devilish functions, they will only grow in strength. But if we see them for what they are and courageously confront them with the 'sharp sword' of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they will instead disperse.

"Boldly triumphing over all obstacles that may arise, let's each continue to strive powerfully and without cease "day by day and month after month" (WND –1, 997) to expand our life state!"

"'Although I, Nichiren, am not a man of wisdom, the Devil king of the sixth heaven has attempted to take possession of my body. But I have for some reason been taking such great care that he now no longer comes near me."

-From "reply to Cyran bowl" (WND –1, 310).

"Devilish functions sap people's life force and plunge them into unhappiness. They appear in various forms, seeking to take advantage at any opportunity. Here, Nichiren Daishonin states that he, himself, exercised great vigilance in order to keep such negative forces away.

"If we allow ourselves to be intimidated by devilish functions, they will only grow in strength. But if we see them for what they are and courageously confront them with the 'sharp store sword' of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they will instead disperse.

"Boldly triumphing over all obstacles that may arise, let's each continue to strive powerfully and without cease "day by day and month after month" (WND –1, 997) to expand our life state!"

"The prayers of the practitioners of the Lotus Sutra striving for kosen-rufu are infinitely powerful. This is the assurance of Nichiren Daishonin.

"When we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the very end and take resolute action, boundless wisdom will well forth from within us. All the living beings of the ten worlds will come to serve as protective functions to assist, support and safeguard our gathering of Buddha's.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To everyone who supports 

in various different ways 
the development of 
The Seikyo Newspaper 
and all our other SGI publications, 
let's be sure to express our
utmost respect and appreciation!
The eternal mission of 
The Seikyo Newspaper 
and our SGI publications is to be 
"news journals for humanity."
Let's convey this hope-filled philosophy 
to society!

*On August 24, 1950, Josei Toda shared his idea with profound insight:
"Shin'ichi, the press has far greater power in modern society than we ever imagined.  An outside newspaper can certainly be troublesome, but to publish our own would give us immeasurably great power. Our society should have its own newspaper at the earliest possible time.  Think about it, Shin'ichi." - This became the day of Seikyo Newspaper's origin. (Ref. The Human Revolution, Vol. 4)

**Shin'ichi said: "The Seikyo Newspaper is the organ of the Soka Gakkai. At the same time, I see it as a journal for the people. ... A news journal for humanity.  Ordinary papers are filled with dark and dismal news.  To some extent this can't be helped because it's a reflection of society. Nevertheless, none of these news papers applies any thought or editorial effort to enabling people to find hope and experience joy while living in such a society.  None of them reaches its readers how to truly challenge and overcome life's suffering. But it is just this kind of newspaper that society needs most. Isn't The Seikyo Newspaper the only newspaper fulfilling this function? For that reason, it is truly a newspaper for humanity." (Ref.. "'This story [of General Stone Tiger] applies to you [Shijo Kingo]. The enemies lurk in wait for you, your resolute faith in the Lotus Sutra has forestalled great dangers before they could begin. Realising this, you must strengthen your faith more than ever.'

"My mentor, Josei Toda, often referred to the story of General Stone Tiger. So strong was the general's determination to avenge his mother who was killed by a tiger, that, when he shot an arrow at a stone he mistook for that tiger, he actually pierced it.

"Citing this passage from Nichiren Daishonin's writings, Mr. Toda would urge us to be unafraid of even the most formidable opponent and press on steadfastly to achieve victory in our lives dedicated to truth and justice.

"Following the examples of resolute faith taught and demonstrated by Nichiren Daishonin and Mr. Toda, let us overcome all challenges and triumphantly open a path adorned with magnificent Soka cherry trees in full bloom!"
