"Toda continued to encourage them: 'The Daishonin's teachings are absolutely true. When he faced great obstacles, he declared: "Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbour doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood" (WND-1, 283).

"No matter what troubles you encounter, never doubt the Gohonzon. As long as you keep practising, free from doubt, you are certain to attain the life state of Buddhahood. The Daishonin tells us we can lead a life of absolute happiness without fail. Things may be tough now, but all you need to do is persist in your faith, without doubt. That's what determines whether you win or lose in life. How about it? Can you persevere?"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 25th - 31st Dec. 2017 Words of the Week, 25th Dec. Daily Gosho, & 26th Dec. Daily Encouragement

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

December 25th-31st, 2017
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
The Daishonin teaches us,
"Myล means to revive, that is,
to return to life."*
The sound of people chanting daimoku has
the power to revive everything.
With the spirit as if we had been reborn,
let's make an enthusiastic vigorous start
towards the new year!

*"The Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra" - WND-I, page 149
**Daimoku is the fundamental rhythm of the universe, the most revered of all voices.  Nichiren Daishonin writes: "When once we chant Myoho-renge-kyo, with just that single sound we summon forth and manifest the Buddha nature of all Buddhas ... and all other living beings.  This blessing is immeasurable and boundless" (Ref.: The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, Vol. 1)

Monday, December 25th, 2017
--- DAILY GOSHO ---

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Families are not held together by orders or commands, by authority or domination. They are held together by love, by harmony, by caring and consideration.

"A single unhappy person in a family makes the entire family unhappy. That's why we need to chant sincerely and support one another, so that no one is unhappy, no one stops practising, and everyone finds true joy and satisfaction together. These human ties will engender real unity. Organisations based on authority and control, forcing people to do things in a military-like fashion, are always weak in a crisis."

SGI Newsletter No. 9563, The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 3: Kosen-rufu and World Peace, Chapter 22: The Organisation for Advancing Kosen-rufu—Part 2 [of 2], 22.6 Discussion Meetings Are the Heart of the Soka Gakkai, from the November 2016 issue of the Daibyakureng, translation released 3rd March, 2017

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's put safety as our top priority,
especially during this hectic holiday season.
Let's chant daimoku with unyielding determination
not to let the chance of an accident or incident
come anywhere near us.
Let's spend each and every day meaningfully
creating value!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"As fellow members who uphold the Mystic Law, it's essential that we respect one another. We need to encourage one another as we advance together on the long and difficult road of kosen-rufu. We need to advance with the unity of 'many in body, one in mind,' always acting as 'good friends' to one another."

SGI Newsletter No. 9583, The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 3: Kosen-rufu and World Peace, Chapter 23: The Unity of "Many in Body, One in Mind"—Part 1 [of 2], 23.3 Showing One Another the Same Respect as We Would a Buddha, translation released 6th April, 2017

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's try to spend some quality time
with our child(ren).
Let's try do gongyo and chant daimoku together
as well as share our dreams and memories
as a family.
This winter recess is a great opportunity
to make our family ties stronger
and to pass on why we began to practice
to the next generation of the family.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The bonds between comrades in faith who have worked together to advance kosen-rufu are eternal. There may be times when you think: 'One lifetime with that person is enough for me!' But the important thing is that we work with such people towards fundamentally transforming our state of life. As the Daishonin says: 'You have associated with a friend in the orchid room and have become as straight as mugwort growing among hemp'[1] (WND-1, 23). The point is that people change. And if we didn't change for the better, what would be the point of our Buddhist practice? The Daishonin also writes: 'The dove has changed into a hawk, the sparrow into a clam'[2] (WND-1, 23).

[1] "A friend in the orchid room" indicates a person of virtue. The implication is that the company of a virtuous person works as a good influence, just as one is imbued with fragrance on entering a room filled with orchids. It is said that mugwort supported by hemp plants grows upright.

[2] Expressions taken from early Chinese literature that indicate dramatic change.
