[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan. 31st + Daily Enc. Feb. 1st

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
What's important is that we make every effort to win today.
What's important is that we make every effort to win now.
From the very moment we make such a determination,
the path towards a new stage in our lives begins to unfold.
Let's all write a new drama in our human revolutions.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"But just as a high wind creates great waves, or a powerful dragon brings forth torrential rains, so my admonitions called forth increasing animosity."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The lives of all of you who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and exert yourselves for kosen-rufu are infinitely noble and respectworthy. You have as yet tapped only a fraction of the boundless power of Buddhahood you possess, and revealed only a tiny portion of your limitless Buddha wisdom.

"This 80th-anniversary year is a time for each of us to freely and unstintingly manifest our Buddhahood. There's nothing to hold us back. Let's allow the eighty characteristics of a Buddha to shine forth from our lives with their full untrammelled brilliance."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, January 29th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
All of our assistant leaders,
who enthusiastically work towards fulfilling their missions,
are playing a very important and vital role in helping us all
to achieve total victory for kosen-rufu.
It is indeed everyone's energetic and compassionate support of each other that doubles the momentum of the SGI movement.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,' cannot be false in any way."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I hope you will make even greater efforts than you have till now to meet and talk with others, fostering heart-to-heart communication for the sake of kosen-rufu. Please pursue dialogue with a bright and confident spirit.

"...As leaders, it is especially important that you take the initiative to talk with as many people as possible. That's the way for you to develop even more impressive character and become even more inspiring leaders.

"Without initiative, there is no victory. Without fighting spirit, there is no faith. Whatever the situation, never give in to fear! Press forwards with courage. Speak out. Strive with all your might and create a history of successive victories."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan. 27th + Daily Enc. Jan 28th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Fearless indomitable courage! This is the "Okinawan Spirit".
It is my fervent wish that these treasure islands* that illuminate the world,
send forth surging waves, carrying (the message of) peace and justice (far and wide)!*
Let us dance joyfully to the rhythm and spirit
of the victory of the mentor and disciple relationship!

* Okinawa, is one of Japan's southern most prefectures, consisting of hundreds of islands spread over a 1000 km area. During World War II, Japan had used these islands as a first line of defence against the Allied forces, deeming them expendable in preventing an assault on Japan's main islands, and as a result countless Okinawan lives had been cruelly sacrificed. After the war, under American rule, Okinawa had become home to several U.S. military bases. It was here in Okinawa, that President Ikeda chose to start writing his novel, The Human Revolution, on December 2nd, 1964 with a fervent wish that the people of Okinawa will transform this land that had seen so much human tragedy into a haven of lasting peace and prosperity.

Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, Jan 27th 2010.

Thursday, January 28th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Gaps of various kinds always arise between plans and reality. That is why it is essential to actually test one's plans to see how well they work in practice.

"Shin'ichi had always done this himself. When a plan based on abstract theories is put into actual practice, things may not always turn out as expected and problems can arise. In some cases, these can even lead to accidents. As a result, it is vital to plan based on the actual conditions as ascertained through careful and repeated checking."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan. 26th + Daily Enc. Jan 27th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
A revolution within a single individual can bring about a change in the entire world!*
The history of the SGI is a perfect illustration of this.**
It is a great drama of the victory of "human revolution".
I would really like our youth division to do their utmost to always keep this spirit alive!

* "A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation, and further, can even enable a change in the destiny of all humankind." Central theme of the "New Human Revolution" by SGI President Ikeda.

** Today, January 26th, is the founding day of the Soka Gakkai International.

"Strengthen your faith day by day and month after month."*

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In his well-known writing 'The True Aspect of All Phenomena,' the Daishonin states:

"Shakyamuni Buddha will enfold in his robe those who...persevere in propagating [the Lotus Sutra undaunted by persecution on the part of the three powerful enemies]. Heavenly gods will make them offerings, support them with their shoulders, and carry them on their backs. (WND-1, 385)

"Today, our activities for peace, culture, and education are winning the highest praise and recognition in countries around the globe. The many commendations we have received are clear proof that we have fought against obstacles like those described in the Daishonin's writings and triumphed over them all.

"The Daishonin urges us to live our lives with the robust spirit that encountering hardships on the path of faith constitutes peace and comfort (cf. OTT, 115). Mr. Toda also declared: 'Rejoice when you encounter hardships. This is the time to demonstrate the power of faith. It's an opportunity to change your karma. Through overcoming such trials, you can attain boundless, everlasting good fortune."

"We are living in very difficult economic times at present. But I hope you will challenge yourselves with the powerful conviction that such circumstances represent a perfect opportunity for you to do your human revolution, and that you will change all poison into medicine.

"Let's do our best!"

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's always be careful about all possible sources of fires.
Especially before going out, make even more sure
by checking out aloud that things are as they should be.
Also, let's make sure to regularly maintain all the heaters that we use, and, every once in a while, make sure to ventilate the rooms when using them.
Never be overconfident or careless about things.
Each and every day, let's make absolutely every effort
to prevent any type of accident or incident from occurring.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan. 21st + Daily Enc. Jan 22nd

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Come, let us engage in conversation (with friends and fellow members)!
There is nothing more powerful more moving than real life experiences!
The flowers of good fortune blossom gloriously
in a place where discussion overflows with joy,
and where people genuinely praise the efforts of each other!

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, said: 'Meet as many people as you can. Engage in dialogue brimming with boundless vitality, determined to open others' hearts from the moment you meet them. Remember, the realm of the human heart can change without limit.'

"My disciples,
be fearless
and speak out resolutely.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The varied sufferings that all living beings undergo--all these are Nichiren's own sufferings' (OTT, 138). All living beings in this troubled saha world have sufferings. Everyone has different kinds of problems--problems that are truly varied and diverse in nature.

"But we can definitely overcome life's sufferings and problems, no matter how serious or deep-seated they may be. This is the purpose of faith in the Mystic Law. The essence of Buddhist dialogue is meeting and interacting with our friends in the compassionate and empathetic spirit of the Daishonin.

"In other words, as the Daishonin's emissaries, we wholeheartedly encourage others, assuring them with unshakable conviction that they will definitely become happy. And we also strive with them to bring forth wisdom and courage so that we can triumph together over our problems and sufferings. There is no more noble work of the Buddha than this.

The character remarks: 'That shows what can become of people.'

that is going to make this, our 80th year,
the most glorious, the most victorious!

Our wonderful Women's Division members,

sake of people's happiness and peace in society) in the world,

The courageous voices of women are indeed the driving force
that will change the current of the time for the better.
Today again, let's all advance together cheerfully and energetically!

when one understands for the first time that one's mind
from the very beginning has been the Buddha.

"Mr. Toda repeatedly shared with me the wisdom he had gained from his life-and-death struggle in prison. He would say:

"People are people, no matter how grand their title. Never bow and scrape to anyone based on their position or status in society.

"What matters most about a person are their principles and their actions. That's why the Soka Gakkai youth, who uphold the world's supreme philosophy and are acting for the happiness of others, should always have the courage to talk to anybody about their beliefs with self-confidence and conviction.

"The people are the most important. The Soka Gakkai is an organisation of the people, and youth are its main protagonists. Always advance with strength and fortitude! Courage! Courage is the key!

"The people are sovereign. You, my young friends, have nothing to fear. Speak out for what you believe is right, filled with courage, hope, confidence, and good cheer. That's also how Goethe lived his life. Please do your best!"

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, January 16th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Along the path of youth,
there is naturally a constant series of worries and challenges,
one after another.
But my dear precious young friends,
don't you ever be discouraged, no matter what happens, and
never ever give up!
On the earth that is nourished with your fortitude and perseverance,
your flower of victory and success will most certainly blossom!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The first shi of the word shishi, or 'lion' [which means
'teacher'], is the Wonderful Law that is passed on by the
teacher. The second shi [which means 'child'] is the
Wonderful Law as it is received by the disciples. The
'roar' is the sound of the teacher and disciples chanting
in unison. The verb sa, 'to make' or 'to roar,' should
here be understood to mean to initiate or to put forth.
It refers to the initiating of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo in the
Latter Day of the Law.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
If we consider ourselves to be leaders of kosen-rufu,
let's initiate decisive action right now,
making the type of resolve as if we were totally reborn!
Each and every day,
let's live out our lives to the fullest,
without having any feelings of regret,

shadow follows the body and clouds accompany rain."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan. 14th + Daily Enc. Jan 15th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
By meeting and talking with people,
let's expand the bonds of trust we share with others.
That is what kosen-rufu is all about.
With our united efforts of having courageous and
encouraging dialogues, with as many people as we can,
let's imbue the whole of our countries with hope and vitality!

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It is extremely rare to be born as a human being. Not
only are you endowed with human form, but you have had the
rare fortune to encounter Buddhism. Moreover, out of the
Buddha's many teachings you have encountered the daimoku,
or the title, of the Lotus Sutra and become its votary."

(Letter to Jakunichi-bo - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 993)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, Jan. 14th, 2010

Friday, January 15th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In a discussion with representatives of a youth delegation from China, I was once asked what had been the key to the Soka Gakkai's development. I replied without a moment's hesitation: 'Our treasuring each and every one of our members.' This is my conviction and my unwavering philosophy.

"To treasure each person--this is truly the foundation of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. As the saying goes, 'One is the mother of ten thousand' (WND-1, 131). The enlightenment of one person opens the way for all people to attain enlightenment. The Daishonin states: 'When the dragon king's daughter attained Buddhahood, it opened up the way to attaining Buddhahood for all women of later ages' (WND-1, 269). This is a case of 'one example that stands for all the rest' (WND-1, 269).

"Each Soka Gakkai member embodies the entire Soka Gakkai. Wholeheartedly encouraging each individual member we encounter, therefore, will serve to invigorate the entire organisation. As long as open, one-on-one dialogue is fostered. our organisation will continue to flourish. This means giving confidence to those feeling lost and confused, hope to those burdened with worries, courage to those sunk in despair, joy to those filled with sorrow, wisdom to those beset by hardships, staying power to those facing setbacks, peace of mind to those gripped by fear, and conviction to those stalled by uncertainty. Such a steady stream of encouragement becomes a powerful source of revitalisation. It fosters bonds of joint commitment, of working together for a common cause. Through these supportive efforts, we actually take a step closer to happiness for both ourselves and others."

SGI Newsletter No. 7908, LEARNING FROM THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN: THE TEACHINGS FOR VICTORY, [11] "The Three Kinds of Treasure"--Part 2 [of 3], "Treasuring Each Person"--The Guiding Spirit of Our Actions as Genuine Practitioners of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, from the November 2009 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translated Jan. 8th, 2010

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Jan 13th + Daily Enc. Jan 14th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all of our noble fellow members from Dai Kyushu
(southern Japan),
with the proud mission of leading worldwide kosen-rufu,
now is the time for you to burn with passion!
Let's demonstrate the true strength of oneness of mentor
and disciple to the entire world.

*Kyushu was the site where the second Soka Gakkai president, Josei Toda, had called for the spread of Nichiren Buddhism throughout Asia. On Oct. 13th, 1957, at the inaugural meeting for Kyushu General Chapter in Fukuoka, he had impassionedly declared, "I pray that, with the energy and enthusiasm you have demonstrated here today, you will strive to bring happiness to not only the people of Japan but of all Asia." Calling out to the young men of Kyushu in particular, he entrusted them with the mission of realising kosen-rufu in Asia and the world. Shin'ichi thus felt deep significance in the fact that he was departing from this historical place of Kyushu for Hong Kong, the starting point of kosen-rufu in Asia.

"In life, it is important to enjoy our challenges. Every effort requires hard work and entails difficulties of one sort or another, the key is not to rue difficulties but to enjoy them as challenges. That's the secret to opening the way to happiness. You can't exercise your full abilities if you're only motivated by a sense of obligation. Those who find joy in life's challenges and do their best with a positive, eager attitude are unbeatable."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all our youth and youthful spirited,
never be discouraged, never lose heart,
no matter what your circumstances might be.
Those who uphold this faith and practice,
throughout their lives,
will most certainly, at the end of the day, be victorious!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Even in this scene of grief, there were those who declared angrily that the enemies of the Lotus Sutra should have their tongues cut out, that they should never be allowed to sit with the others in the assembly. Bodhisattva Kashyapa vowed that he would appear in the form of frost and hail in the lands of the enemies of the Lotus Sutra."
