-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It's our courageous faith, our ultimate strength,
that enables us to start a fresh new life.
Together with our gallant fellow members in Tohoku,
who are so courageously moving on with such unyielding perseverance
(despite the great disaster),
let us all make every effort to advance together
towards a hope-filled future!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"My wish is that my disciples will be cubs of the lion king, never to be laughed at by the pack of foxes. It is hard to encounter a master like Nichiren, who since distant kalpas in the past down to the present day has never begrudged his body or life in order to expose the faults of his powerful enemies!"
(In the Continent of Jambudvipa - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.2, page 1062)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"No matter how tough the challenges we face, we can definitely overcome them and transform poison into medicine. This is what the Soka Gakkai has demonstrated with incontrovertible proof over the last 80 years.

"The Daishonin's Buddhism places importance on the three aspects of teaching, practice, and proof. In other words, the particular Buddhist teaching, the practice that it sets forth, and the benefit one receives from that practice (i.e., enlightenment). In the Latter Day of the Law, the Daishonin's Buddhism alone contains all three aspects. It thus follows that today they are found only in the Soka Gakkai, which is directly connected to the Daishonin. This is borne out by the joyful experiences in faith shared by members at discussion meetings across Japan and around the world.

"We are living in troubled times and many people are suffering. That is why we need to reach out to others and talk to them about the great teachings of the Daishonin's Buddhism and enable them to share the wonderful benefits of faith in the Mystic Law."
SGI Newsletter No. 8226, SGI President Ikeda's Message, NATIONWIDE EXECUTIVE CONFERENCE--PART 2 [OF 2], A Grand Vision for the Future of Kosen-rufu, from the December 26th, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated April 28th, 2011

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Tension, concentration, effort--such mental tautness is essential in developing the dynamic vision that enables us to reject rigid thinking and grasp the constantly changing conditions of the times. French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941) defines this tautness as 'deep-rooted mental healthiness' expressed in 'a bent for action, the faculty of adapting and re-adapting oneself to circumstances, in firmness combined with suppleness, in the prophetic discernment of what is possible and what is not, in a spirit of simplicity which triumphs over complications.'

"These qualities deeply resonate with the spirit of striving to strengthen and brace oneself found in a person of courage.... People of courage with the spirit of ceaseless striving know no limits. The essence of Buddhist humanism lies in the insistence that human beings exercise their spiritual capacities to the limit, or more accurately, without limit, coupled with an unshakable belief in their ability to do this. In this way, faith in humanity is absolutely central to Buddhism.

"The knowledge that one is practising the fundamental Law that encompasses the universe is a source of enduring pride and self-confidence. As such, it should never be confused with the arrogance and unrestrained desire of modern man portrayed, for example, by Goethe's Faust.

"Such pride and self-confidence are tempered by a sense of responsibility and self-discipline, the determination to uphold the principle that religion--which is vital in the formation of human character--must always serve the needs of real people, never those of religious institutions. As Jules Michelet (1798-1874)maintained: 'Religion is comprised within the realm of spiritual activity; spiritual activity is not contained within religion.'

"This distinction--between religion that serves the needs of people and that which demands people serve its needs--is crucial. When this line is crossed, religion can descend into passive compliance, leaving us vulnerable to the impulses of human weakness, ugliness, stupidity and lethargy."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 28th April To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 29th April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, April 28th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
A fresh invigorating greeting goes a long way
in creating heart to heart bonds between people!
By the sincere way in which we behave and conduct ourselves
let us sink deep roots of trust (into society)!
Let us try to give our complete attention and care
to each person we interact with.

--- DAILY GOSHO --
"What does Bodhisattva Never Disparaging's profound respect for people signify? The purpose of the appearance in this world of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, lies in his behaviour as a human being."

Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, April 28th, 2011

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
The humanism upheld by the SGI is rooted in the teachings of the 13th-century Japanese Buddhist priest Nichiren (1222-82), who wrote: 'The Law does not spread by itself: because people propagate it, both people and the Law are respectworthy.' Thus, while we seek 'to rely on the Law, not on the person,' it is through the character and example of people that the Law is taught and spreads. In Buddhism, the Law (Dharma) is not something static. It is people, practising and embodying it in their lives, who enable it to vigorously pulsate in reality.'

"A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In his well-rounded evaluation of information technology, the French scientist and essayist Albert Jacquard observes, 'Information science...supplies only communication canned or frozen. It is incapable of evoking the bursts of creativity that come naturally in the course of a dialogue comprising moments of silence as well as words.'

"It is true that the development of information technology presents opportunities for people to forge new connections. However, relations formed online will have no human face if they are limited to anonymous, depersonalised exchanges. Such interactions can only be inorganic and neutral, far removed from the refreshing wonder, tangible response and satisfaction that come from the effort to realise face-to-face, soul-to-soul communication.

"In contrast to these developments, I would like to note the significance to the human spirit of efforts to engage in dialogue made by Soka Gakkai International (SGI) members on a global scale, particularly through the local discussion meetings that have been at the heart of our activities since the organization's inception. These interactive exchanges, conducted in thousands of locations each day, precisely mirror Jacquard's concept of 'dialogue comprising moments of silence as well as words.' As participants, we experience a sense of joy and fulfilment when our words reach the heart of another, and feel confused and frustrated when they fail to do so. In silence, we patiently struggle in search of better words, and are rewarded with an even greater sense of contentment when they are finally heard and evoke a response.

"The multihued tapestry woven of such tireless striving for dialogue enables us to develop and enrich our minds and souls. It is a furnace tempering and training the inner life. It is the exact opposite of 'frozen communication.'

"It is only when immersed in words and dialogue that human beings can become truly human; one cannot mature into a complete and full-fledged human being without such experiences. It is for this reason that Socrates declared in his Phaedo that misology (hatred of language) and misanthropy (hatred of human beings) spring from the same source."

Our goal of achieving kosen-rufu
means that it is one that spurs us on to take on limitless challenges!
Let us advance now towards our next great milestone,
May 3rd (the day of the Soka Gakkai),
singing aloud hope-filled melodies,
advancing cheerfully and in great high spirits!

"'At times we are born as human beings, becoming rulers of various countries, high ministers, court nobles, or other court officials, and we think ourselves incomparably happy. Thus we content ourselves with such little gains and are delighted with them. However, the Buddha has taught that these accomplishments are mere prosperity in a dream, a phantom joy, and that we should simply accept and uphold the Lotus Sutra and quickly become Buddhas.'
From 'Sovereign, Teacher, and Parent' (WND-2, 36).

"Power, material wealth, and fame are fleeting; they can easily disappear. We must not be swayed by such superficial trappings. As individuals working to spread the eternal Mystic Law, we are drawing forth the indestructible life-state of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity from within, while helping others do the same. We are leading lives of absolute victory. Our hearts are filled with the pride of champions of humanity."
SGI Newsletter No. 8218, translated April 22nd, 2011, from the April 21st, 2011, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai.

to all of our noble fellow members
who have devoted themselves to achieving all our goals and targets
with such unyielding determination.*
We, the ever-youthful SGI, are absolutely victorious!
Now, let's continue together in our winning ways by taking on new challenges.

(*)As of this e-mail, in local elections held in Japan on April 24th, 2011,
candidates fielded by the New Komeito party, who were endorsed by the Soka Gakkai in Japan, are all set to win their seats in their constituencies, for a total of 1,263. This makes the New Komeito the party with the most number of candidates to have won seats in terms of the number of total seats won. The DPJ won 400+ seats, while the LDP, 700+. The majority of candidates ran as independents, with 4,000+ winning seats.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"We have observed many people grow and improve themselves through the process of wanting, seeking, and striving for relative happiness in such forms as wealth, social status, health, and fame. Through strong faith, we who uphold this Buddhism that enables us to fulfil all our wishes can also achieve those desires, and doing so is proof of the power of faith. However, true and indestructible happiness is not found in relative happiness, but in absolute happiness.

"...Absolute happiness is not simply an extension or a higher degree of relative happiness. One can seem to be quite unfortunate in terms of relative happiness, but can actually have a firmly established absolute happiness. An example of this is the life-state of Nichiren Daishonin when he said: 'I feel immeasurable delight' (WND-1, 386).

"Absolute happiness is not controlled by our ever-changing external circumstances, but is a feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction at the deepest level of one's being, born from taking action to fulfil the mission and purpose that one has freely chosen in life.

"The critical thing here is that the missions and purposes we choose for ourselves need to be in accord with the eternal and unchanging Law that permeates the entire universe. Ultimately, the way to build true and absolute happiness is to awaken to one's mission for kosen-rufu and dedicate one's life to that great vow.

"When we dedicate our lives to kosen-rufu, the vast life-states of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth and the Buddha well up within us. So that even though we may be living in exile or in prison, or we may be battling illness, none of those circumstances will bother us and we'll be able to enjoy a life-state of immense joy, fulfilment, and satisfaction. That's absolute happiness."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd April To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 23rd April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, April 22nd, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin states,
"Buddhism primarily concerns itself with victory or defeat."*
It is vital that we speak with unwavering determination.
Let's speak with the courage of a lion king, and be victorious!
Let's all advance together with the very spirit
that we are all different in body but united in mind.

"Therefore, the best way to attain Buddhahood is to encounter a good friend. How far can our own wisdom take us? If we have even enough wisdom to distinguish hot from cold, we should seek out a good friend."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"One day, my mentor Josei Toda and I were talking about the Soka Gakkai's mission to widely propagate the Mystic Law, and I asked him why it was important to strive in faith with the spirit of 'not begrudging one's life' taught in the Lotus Sutra. He replied to the effect:

"'On our planet, people kill each other in wars; our economies are based on the survival of the fittest, and do not necessarily lead to human happiness; and many of society's leaders, who by rights ought to help others, instead often look down on and exploit people. And the same kind of thing is found in such spheres as politics, science, and religion. Call it humanity's karma, but society is complex and full of contradictions. Nowhere there can we find the fundamental path to happiness for all people.

"'Only Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism sets forth the means for fundamentally transforming our karma. It teaches the path of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity, the path of lasting fulfilment and satisfaction. There is no higher path in life than this. That is why, if you give your all for the sake of faith, you will never regret it.'

"Deeply moved by Mr. Toda's words, I renewed my determination to give my all in pursuing this unparalleled path in life just as he taught.

"There is no more exciting, satisfying, or meaningful way to spend one's life than dedicating it to the noble cause of realising happiness for all humanity."

"Second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda called out to his beloved disciples: 'Those who have overcome the most trying challenges are able to help others. We have to keep fighting with tireless perseverance. As long as we have courageous faith, there is absolutely no trial or tribulation that we cannot positively transform, changing poison into medicine.'

"Immediately after the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995, our members in Kobe began holding what they dubbed 'Rising Phoenix gongyo meetings,' which gave impetus to their steady, forward progress.

"One dedicated women's division member of Ever-victorious Kansai, whose home was destroyed in the quake, said: 'The more I encouraged others, the more the invincible Kansai spirit to never be defeated blazed in my heart. I became stronger. Having learned what it meant to hit rock bottom, I wanted to help fundamentally transform the situation in my community and spread happiness.'"

"'My disciples, do not fear! Don't let this golden opportunity slip away! Now is the time to stand up with courage. Based on correct faith, become a votary of the Lotus Sutra, and remain a loyal disciple of Nichiren Daishonin as long as you live!'--Shin'ichi felt this impassioned call of the Daishonin roar through his heart like thunder.

"Shin'ichi asserted: 'Standing up with the awareness that we are disciples of Nichiren, in terms of our concrete practice, is committing ourselves to the Soka Gakkai, striving for kosen-rufu, and living out our lives in the spirit of 'many in body, one in mind'.

"'Directly linked to the life of Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law who battled the three powerful enemies, the Soka Gakkai is the sole organisation carrying out kosen-rufu in complete accord with his teachings.'"

And together let us head directly towards glorious victory!

The Daishonin encourages us,

In order for justice and truth to prevail,
we must be absolutely victorious!

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 17th April To My Friends + Daily Gosho + 18th April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, April 17th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Courageously and in high spirits,
let's make today a truly victorious and successful day!
When we have chanted with such strong determination
there is absolutely nothing that is more powerful and convincing
than the power of our voices and the words we speak.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In the Lotus Sutra only the Buddha's disciples from beginningless time were entrusted with the mission of propagating the Mystic Law in the Latter Day, which is to say, those propagating the Law in the present age are just such disciples and Bodhisattvas of the Earth. For disciples of the Daishonin, genuine faith and practice are found within the courageous struggle to further kosen-rufu in the Latter Day of the Law. As the Lotus Sutra states: 'He or she is the envoy of the thus come one. He has been dispatched by the thus come one and carries out the thus come one's work' (LSOC10, 200).

"...The Bodhisattvas of the Earth do not act because someone tells them to. Because their lives are dedicated to the Mystic Law inherent in the universe, they spontaneously chant daimoku and contribute to world peace and the welfare of society, as naturally as plants and trees grow from the earth.

"...Josei Toda always said: 'The Soka Gakkai is a gathering of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth entrusted by Nichiren Daishonin to propagate the Mystic Law in the present age, the Latter Day of the Law. It is an organisation functioning in complete accord with the Buddha's intent and decree.'"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 16th April To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 17th April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, April 16th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
All of the efforts that we have made
to help others to form a connection with Buddhism
will become priceless treasures and adorn our lives.*
Let's muster up all our courage and share this Buddhism
with as many people as we possibly can!
Let's have conversations that are brimming with sincerity
and that really do strike a chord in other's hearts.

*"Single-mindedly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same; that will remain as the only memory of your present life in this human world."- "Questions and Answers about Embracing the Lotus Sutra", WND-I, page 64 Saturday, April 16th, 2011

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Yet you must grit your teeth and never slacken in your faith. Be as fearless as Nichiren when he acted and spoke out before Hei no Saemonnojo."

Selection source: SGI President Ikeda's guidance, Seikyo Shimbun, April 16th, 2011

Sunday, April 17th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'The Benefits of Responding with Joy' (18th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra teaches each of us to strive in accord with our own ability to 'put forth effort in preaching and expounding' the Law (LSOC18, 286). There's no need to feel pressure to do things a certain way. The important thing is to chant to the Gohonzon honestly, and talk to others sincerely and confidently. Through such continued efforts, we will naturally come to develop a life-state in which we can warmly embrace and support others. The desire to help others will well forth within us.

"In any case, the more we summon forth our courage and talk to others based on chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the more we will be able to help them form a connection with the Daishonin's Buddhism, contributing not only to their happiness but also our own.

"The ancient Indian poet Tiruvalluvar wrote: 'Don't turn away, thinking it is hard work;/ with right effort you'll come through.'"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 15th April To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 16th April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, April 15th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's make our district a perfect gathering of people
striving for kosen-rufu.
All of us are invaluable individuals
with very unique roles and missions to play.
Let's make every possible effort so that each and every one of us,
without exception,
can lead victorious lives by fulfilling our noble missions!

Friday, April 15th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In the end, no one can escape death. The sufferings at that time will be exactly like what we are experiencing now. Since death is the same in either case, you should be willing to offer your life for the Lotus Sutra."

"'At first one may seem to have faith in the Lotus Sutra, but it is hard to maintain that faith to the last. Water, for example, may be stirred by the wind, or blossoms may lose their hue with the fading of the morning dew. How, then, have you been able to persist in your faith up until today? It must be thanks entirely to the blessings you have acquired in previous existences, and to the care bestowed on you by Shakyamuni Buddha. How heartening is that thought, how heartening indeed!'
From 'The Buddha Resides in a Pure Heart' (WND-2, 885)

"As pioneer members who have striven wholeheartedly and made invaluable contributions to kosen-rufu, the wonderful benefits you have accumulated are undeniable and immeasurable. The Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three existences are surely praising and protecting you."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Some think of Buddhist practice as retreating to a quiet place and leading a life of calm and contemplation, but you should know that from its earliest origins Buddhism was a philosophy of practice, of living and energetically engaging with others in dialogue.

"Buddhism is a teaching for helping all living beings, and especially the people who are suffering the most. Therefore, study needs to be rooted in daily life and serve as a guide for action. Study becomes a revitalising force when it provides assurance and self-confidence in the power to overcome life's difficulties and tribulations."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 13th April To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 14th April Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let us use our hope-filled, encouraging voices
to encourage and cheer up our friends
who may be going through tough times.
Let us have a smile on our faces that radiates a warm caring concern.
It is in the very midst of trying circumstances
that we need to be like a revitalising spring breeze.

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"I am praying that, no matter how troubled the times may become, the Lotus Sutra and the ten demon daughters will protect all of you, praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground."

(On Rebuking Slander of the Law and Eradicating Sins - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 444)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, April 13th, 2011

Thursday, April 14th, 2011
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"...one member commented: 'I find it difficult to put into practice the eloquence, wisdom, and compassion that the guidance of the SGI suggests we aspire to.' In response, I said:

"Just be yourself. All you have to do is keep chanting sincere daimoku and advance freely in a manner that is true to yourself. That is what is meant by the Buddhist principle of 'revealing one's true and highest potential.' The practice of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism allows one's true self to shine forth....Surely the true and most humane way for us to live is to advance just as we are, as ordinary people, basing our lives on Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and striving to improve ourselves even if little by little. Buddhism is the great Law that is open to all people; it does not make irrational or unreasonable demands."
