"Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy.  Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what happens. How could this be anything other than the boundless joy of the Law?  Strengthen your power of faith more than ever."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'Faith for a harmonious family' is the most fundamental of the five eternal guidelines of the Soka Gakkai. Efforts to embody this kind of faith constitute the very essence of Buddhist practice. They also constitute a sure way for achieving kosen-rufu.

"Compassion for others is powerfully nurtured as we work together as a family to develop faith that creates harmony. If we can have compassion towards our own parents, we can develop compassion for other people as well.

"Many people live alone or are not married. Some couples don't have children. There are also single-parent families. Families come in all shapes and sizes.

"But we are all members of the Soka family. We are linked by the deepest, most beautiful life tie—our vow from time without beginning. The members of our value-creating family share one another's hardships, join together to overcome difficulties, praise one another's growth, and appreciate one another. They change complaint into prayer, criticism into encouragement, and share one another's joys and sorrows. They are a source of hope for transforming our local areas and communities. Building genuinely harmonious families is the key to creating a truly peaceful society.

"Today, a steady stream of harmonious families of the Mystic Law is shining around the world. They represent a huge network of millions and tens of millions of people working to create friendship, harmony, and peace. A positive revolution in the family will lead directly to changing the destiny of humankind.

"All around the globe, our members' examples of building harmonious families are producing oases of life that bring peace and security to society.

"The harmonious families of SGI members are bright suns of hope, the fruit of a truly universal religion."

"Now, no matter what, strive in faith and be known as a votary of the Lotus Sutra, and remain my disciple for the rest of your life. If you are of the same mind as Nichiren, you must be a Bodhisattva of the Earth."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In any event, it is no exaggeration to say that the key to harmonious families is to be found in the drama of passing on faith from parent to child. That's why Mr. Toda repeatedly urged parents to raise their children in the realm of Soka.

"Attending SGI meetings together as a family is extremely meaningful. Though children may not fully appreciate it at the time, the opportunity to directly experience the spirit of faith is a powerful force in helping them form a solid connection to Nichiren Buddhism. In particular, all those supporting the future division play the role of truly noble and admirable 'good friends,' or positive influences.

"Parents need to have faith in their children's potential. Their children are all Bodhisattvas of the Earth who have promised to carry out worldwide kosen-rufu in the Latter Day of the Law. The time is certain to come when they will arise, awakened to that mission.

"Praying for their children's growth, never giving up on them, is the test of parents' faith."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'It is said that Ueno [Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro], your deceased father, was a man of feeling. Since you [Nanjo Tokimitsu] are his son, perhaps you have inherited the outstanding qualities of his character. Blue dye is bluer even than indigo itself, and ice is colder than water. How wonderful it is, how wonderful!'
- (WND-2, 809; "Offerings in the Snow")

"The third key to family harmony is to be a family open to the world, making a positive contribution to society and fostering capable individuals who will build a brighter future.

"Today, in the new era of worldwide kosen-rufu, many new members with new strengths and abilities are emerging all around the globe. At the same time, we now have second-, third-, and fourth-generation members who have inherited their faith directly from parents and grandparents and are developing splendidly in the realm of kosen-rufu.

"As we approach the 100th anniversary of the Soka Gakkai's founding (in 2030), the most crucial element in building a strong and enduring foundation for kosen-rufu is the transmission of faith from one generation to the next within the family.

"There were model disciples during the Daishonin's lifetime who correctly learned and carried on the faith of their parents, growing from the equivalent of future division members to fine youth division members. Top on that list is Nanjo Tokimitsu.[1]

"Both Tokimitsu's father, Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro, and his mother, the lay nun Ueno,[2] received guidance from the Daishonin during times of difficulty and put it into practise in their lives.

"Hyoe Shichiro was originally a practitioner of the Pure Land (Nembutsu) teachings, but converted to faith in the Lotus Sutra after an apparent encounter with Nichiren Daishonin. He contracted a serious illness, but remained steadfast in faith and died a peaceful death. As the Daishonin described it, 'he . . . attained Buddhahood just as he was' (WND-1, 458), and 'ended his life in the frame of mind of a true believer [lit. had a correct and steadfast mind at the moment of death]' (cf. WND-2, 499)."

[1] Nanjo Tokimitsu (1259–1332): A staunch follower of the Daishonin and the steward of Ueno Village in Fuji District of Suruga Province. From the time the Daishonin took up residence on Mount Minobu, Nanjo Tokimitsu enjoyed a close relationship with the Daishonin, frequently receiving guidance from him. He played an admirable role defending the Daishonin's followers during the Atsuhara Persecution, for which the Daishonin dubbed him "Ueno the Worthy."

[2] Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro (d. 1265) was a retainer of the Kamakura military government. He was originally the steward of Nanjo Village in Izu Province, hence the name Nanjo. He later moved to become the steward of Ueno Village in Fuji District of Suruga Province, and therefore is also known as Ueno. His wife is referred to as the lay nun Ueno. Sometime between 1260 and 1264, while on an official tour of duty in Kamakura, Hyoe Shichiro met the Daishonin and converted to his teachings. After his death, his wife went on to raise their children alone while maintaining faith in the Daishonin's teachings.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Aug. 28, 2016 + Daily Encouragement Aug 29

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, August 28th, 2016
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
A new era develops
together with fresh new people.
It's in the activities of the local districts and groups
that the real hive of the kosen-rufu movement is found.
With everyone's daimoku
and by combining all our efforts,
let's raise all the talented and able individuals we can
so that together we can become the pillars
of the new era of kosen-rufu!

Sunday, August 28th, 2016
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"But when in the family honour is paid diligently to the teachings, the seven disasters will most certainly be banished."

(On the Nation's Slander of the Law
- WND, Volume II, page 1026)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Losing a beloved family member is indeed a sad and painful event. Though we may understand it with our heads, it takes time for our feelings, our emotions, to accept the reality.

"People need different amounts of time to come to terms with the death of a loved one. The Daishonin teaches that we should chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as much as we possibly can for the deceased.[1]

"We may lose a family member through illness, or more suddenly in an accident or natural disaster. But all who die in the course of devoting themselves to kosen-rufu are certain to transform their karma in this existence and pass away with a serene life condition. And even family members who did not practise Nichiren Buddhism themselves will be embraced in the chanting of family members who do.

"Buddhism teaches the oneness of life and death. The Daishonin assures us that family members united by the bonds of the Mystic Law will meet again after death (cf. WND-1, 1074).[2]

"From the perspective of Nichiren Buddhism, which enables us to savour joy in both life and death, we are certain to attain a state where both life and death are suffused with happiness and peace."

SGI Newsletter No. 9437, The Buddhism of the Sun—Illuminating the World, [9] The Five Eternal Guidelines of the Soka Gakkai—Part 1 [of 5], "Faith for a Harmonious Family"—Making Our Families Castles of Happiness and Security, Nichiren Buddhism Enables Us to Savour Joy in Life and Joy in Death, from the January 2016 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 24th Aug., 2016

[1] In "Hell Is the Land of Tranquil Light," the Daishonin writes: "You should by all means perform as much good as you possibly can for the sake of your deceased husband [by offering prayers for his eternal happiness]" (WND-1, 458).

[2] In "Reply to the Mother of Ueno," the Daishonin writes: "The seeds of one kind of plant are all the same; they are different from the seeds of other plants. If all of you nurture the same seeds of Myoho-renge-kyo in your hearts, then you all will be reborn together in the same land of Myoho-renge-kyo" (WND-1, 1074).

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27.8.2016 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 28.8 Daily Encouragement

* The next few days will see the "Daily Encouragement" section a little bit longer than normal, hope you can spare those few extra moments to read some very important and relevant guidance...

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shinbun and more.

Saturday, August 27th, 2016
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
When we sing Gakkai songs,
songs for kosen-rufu,
everyone feels uplifted
and waves of courage spread.
Voicing our determination
in song,
let's advance together
with the spirit of "One in Mind"!

*"Songs can unite; they can bring people together. Similarly, Gakkai songs--songs for kosen-rufu--unite our members in the cause of widely spreading the ideals and principles of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. Throughout Japan and countries around the globe, our members are singing such stirring songs as they forge ahead valiantly to create a new era. "Songs provide the rhythm for victory. Songs solidify the unity of mentor and disciple." (SGI Newsletter  No. 7657, LEARNING FROM THE GOSHO: THE HOPE-FILLED  WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN, [12] "Many in Body, One in Mind" -- "The Spirit of Many in Body, One in Mind" Is the Path to Certain Victory, from the September 2008 issue of the Daibyakurenge)

"'Song can rally the strength of one's own forces, and ... it can deflate the morale of one's opponents.'  That's very true. This is why Mr. Toda always had members sing inspiring songs. Singing songs is a Gakkai tradition. Let's keep on doing so! Nothing can compare to the confident, dynamic, and optimistic momentum of our members united in spirited song. "...At any rate, songs are important. Let's all sing together." (SGI Newsletter No. 7582, 19th SOKA GAKKAI HEADQUARTERS LEADERS MEETING--PART 1 [OF 2] "It is the Heart That is Important," on June 18th, 2008, from the June 23rd, 2008, issue of the Seikyo Shinbun)

Saturday, August 27th, 2016
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Although Nichiren and his followers are few, because they are different in body, but united in mind, they will definitely accomplish their great mission of widely propagating the Lotus Sutra."

 - WND, Vol. I, page 618)

Seikyo Shinbun, August 27th, 2016

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'There's no need,' Mr. Toda would say, 'for you to rush in and start lecturing your family members on the principles of Buddhism. Even if it takes time, first strive to become a fine person and put your parents' minds at ease. I want you to become people who really care for, respect, and appreciate their parents.'
"When I began practising  Nichiren Buddhism at the age of 19, my father vehemently opposed my decision. It was extremely difficult for my mother, who intermediated between us. From my personal experience, I understand only too well how hard it can be for those whose family members don't practise.
"Based on that, I would like to tell you not to get into emotional disputes over your faith or to try to rush introducing your family to the practice.
"As the Daishonin writes, even if you are the only person in your family who embraces faith in the Mystic Law, your efforts to press ahead steadily on the path to attaining Buddhahood are the true way to honour and serve your family members.
"As practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism, we should care for and treasure our family members. It's important that we carry out our personal human revolution and develop ourselves so that we can become a source of light, imparting hope to our families.
"The direct path to building a harmonious family is for each of us to become the shining suns within our family."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 26th Aug. 2016 To My Friends & Daily Gosho plus 27th Aug. Daily Encouragement

* The next few editions of "Daily Encouragement" will be a bit longer than normal but we hope you have time to read that little bit more…

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The first and most important thing
for those in leadership roles is to
take the initiative in helping members
who are really in the midst
of great problems and trouble!
By visiting members who are in such difficulties,
and encouraging them with all we've got,
we naturally develop and widen
the noble path of Kosen-rufu!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Kyo'o's misfortune will change into fortune. Muster your faith, and pray to this Gohonzon. Then what is there that cannot be achieved?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin always showed his concern for the family members of his disciples—such as Shijo Kingo, Toki Jonin, Abutsu-bo, and the lay nun Ueno—and offered them guidance for building harmonious families.

"In addition, following the Daishonin's advice, the Ikegami brothers—Munenaka and Munenaga—and their families overcame adversity to show brilliant proof of 'Faith for a harmonious family.'

"The brothers' father had opposed their faith in the Lotus Sutra and even disowned his elder son, Munenaka. In 'Letter to the Brothers,' the Daishonin powerfully encourages the latter concerning his disinheritance. Instructing Munenaka about the true way of honouring one's parents, he writes: 'In all worldly affairs, it is the son's duty to obey his parents, yet on the path to Buddhahood, disobeying one's parents ultimately constitutes filial piety' (WND-1, 499). He is saying that listening to one's parents and putting their minds at ease is indeed the way to honour them, but with regard to the path to attaining Buddhahood, the best way of honouring one's parents is to follow that path without wavering, even if one's parents oppose it.

"Of course, one shouldn't needlessly antagonise one's parents.

"The Daishonin relates how Shakyamuni, in disobeying his father, King Shuddhodana, by leaving his palace and relinquishing royal status in order to pursue enlightenment, was actually following the true path of repaying his debt of gratitude to his father (cf. WND-1, 499).[1] In other words, it is not a matter of choosing between honouring your parents and being true to your faith; rather, by steadfastly embracing the Mystic Law, which assures the enlightenment of all people, you will open the way to truly honouring your parents."

SGI Newsletter No. 9437, The Buddhism of the Sun—Illuminating the World, [9] The Five Eternal Guidelines of the Soka Gakkai—Part 1 [of 5], "Faith for a Harmonious Family"—Making Our Families Castles of Happiness and Security, The True Way to Honour One's Parents, from the January 2016 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 24th Aug., 2016

[1] The Daishonin writes: "When the Thus Come One Shakyamuni was a prince, his father, King Shuddhodana, could not bear losing his only heir and so would not allow him to renounce his royal station. The king kept two thousand soldiers posted at the palace's four gates to prevent him from leaving. Nevertheless, the prince eventually left the palace against his father's will. In all worldly affairs, it is the son's duty to obey his parents, yet on the path to Buddhahood, disobeying one's parents ultimately constitutes filial piety. The Contemplation on the Mind-Ground Sutra explains the essence of filial piety: 'By renouncing one's obligations and entering the Buddhist life one can truly repay those obligations in full.' That is, in order to enter the true way, one leaves one's home against one's parents' wishes and attains Buddhahood. Then one can truly repay one's debt of gratitude to them" (WND-1, 499).

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 25 Aug. 2016 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 26 Aug Daily Encouragement

Apologies for the delay, finally back in Tokyo! The guidance in Daily Encouragement for the next few days will be longer than normal BUT we really hope you can give just a little extra time to read it! Enjoy!

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's always make a point of expressing our appreciation
to the families who offer their homes for our SGI activities!
Let exercise good common sense
and be very careful about the neighbours
especially in regard to parking
our bicycles, cars or other means of transport
and talking outside the meeting place.
The expansion of kosen-rufu starts
right where we stand!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Neither the pure land nor hell exists outside oneself; both lie only within one's own heart. Awakened to this, one is called a Buddha; deluded about it, one is called an ordinary person. The Lotus Sutra reveals this truth, and one who embraces the Lotus Sutra will realise that hell is itself the Land of Tranquil Light."

Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 456)

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ——
"…the five eternal guidelines of the Soka Gakkai. They are:

(1) Faith for a harmonious family
(2) Faith for achieving happiness
(3) Faith for overcoming obstacles
(4) Faith for health and long life
(5) Faith for absolute victory

"'In all worldly affairs, it is the son's duty to obey his parents, yet on the path to Buddhahood, disobeying one's parents ultimately constitutes filial piety.' (WND-1, 499; "Letter to the Brothers")

- The Family as a Place Where Each Member Can Grow and Create Value

"I am very fond of the idea of the family being a place where each member can grow and create value. The family is a hub of security and hope, which are so necessary in life. It is a stronghold of happiness and peace. It is a place of revitalisation, for recharging one's batteries each day. It is a positive, nurturing bond that creates the way for self-improvement and fulfilment. It is a castle of harmony and growth.

"Even if its members live apart from one another, a family is always a family. Nichiren Daishonin cared deeply for his mother. In one of his writings, he candidly expresses his regret for not having listened to her words more often.[1]

"The family is a central, recurring theme in the Daishonin's writings. That is why 'Faith for a harmonious family' is the first of the five eternal guidelines.

"Mr. Toda declared: 'The family is the foundation for society. And faith for a harmonious family is the power source for building a strong family. Such faith is an indispensable condition for the happiness of individual families and the flourishing of society as a whole.'

"The family and the home are the foundation for prosperous communities and societies. The growth of each family member through mutual respect and encouragement, and the creation of a realm of harmony and cooperation in the home, the smallest social unit, is the starting point for peace.

"How can we achieve family harmony, which represents world peace in miniature?

"First, we ourselves must strive to be a bright, sunny presence in our homes, enfolding all our family members in the light of compassion.

"Second, we need to respect one another, recognising that the family ties between parent and child, or between spouses or partners, are karmic bonds enduring throughout the three existences of past, present, and future.

"Third, we need to make a positive contribution to society and work to foster successors who will do likewise.

"I would like to confirm all three of these points with you now."

[1] The Daishonin writes: "When my own mother was still living, I went too much against her words. Now that she has preceded me in death, I cannot help but feel deep regret" (WND-2, 898).
