—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"I pray for your health and long life and for your success in all endeavours. I am sending you daimoku. I hope you will all pray, too. Pray that instead of devils or negative, destructive forces infiltrating your being, Brahma, Shakra, and the gods of the sun and the moon—positive, protective forces of the universe—will enter your life! Pray that they will enter the lives of all members in your region and the entire membership of the SGI, as well. If you do this, your strength will multiply a hundredfold, a thousandfold. With such prayer, with such faith, you will be able to realize a fundamental transformation in the very depths of your life. It is the secret to achieving your human revolution. . . .

"That is why we will never be defeated. Let us move forward with this invincible conviction.

"'The voice does the Buddha's work' (cf. OTT, 4). How important it is that we talk with others, that we engage in dialogue! Armed with perseverance and wearing the 'robe of gentleness and patience' (WND-2, 602), let us make a point of always speaking to others with bright and vibrant voices. Let us hold warm dialogues, happy dialogues. Let us hold dialogues that inspire and encourage. Let us hold dialogues brimming with philosophy. Such dialogues are what will pave the way to a truly human and humane world. And let us work hard to link those dialogues to the ongoing victory of our movement."

"The SGI is brimming with fresh energy, and has become a truly awesome organisation. Members in 192 countries and territories are advancing with joy and keen seeking spirit in faith. I wish to praise each and every one of our members for their tremendous efforts.

"We have been able to build such a solid organisation because our members everywhere are so passionate and committed. They are really striving with sincere dedication.

"I hope that our leaders of the new age of kosen-rufu will give foremost thought to how they can contribute to members' happiness and bring them joy.

"Those who immediately rush to the side of people who are suffering; those who are fully dedicated to the welfare of others and society—they will achieve ultimate victory in life. Their efforts enable them to develop diamond-like strength and fortitude."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"

— TO MY FRIENDS --
To all of our meeting arrangers and people who help out
and all who back-up our activities for the sake of kosen-rufu,
throughout this year behind the scenes,
thank you so very much!
Thanks to your selfless dedication and painstaking efforts,
it is most certain that your lives will be adorned with

"Life and society are filled with challenges. Looking around, we see various organisations deadlocked and lacking vitality. We live in a time when the future is uncertain. But organisations that can break through stalemate and press ahead will be able to succeed and thrive. That's why we must keep moving forwards. This present moment is decisive. Nichiren Daishonin proclaims: 'Not once have I thought of retreat' (WND-2, 465).

"The deeper the darkness, the brighter the humanism of Nichiren Buddhism shines. We must never retreat a single step in our struggle. My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda declared: 'We are carrying out a great revolution. It is not a revolution waged by military force or political power. It is a nonviolent revolution—the human revolution. This is the true revolution.'

"When we advance, we will meet resistance, we will come up against obstacles. And when we think we can go no farther, that's when the real challenge begins. That's the time for us to chant with even greater determination and take courageous action.

"We can change the situation. We can expand our life condition. It's important that we strive wholeheartedly in this existence, so that we can look back on our lives with no regrets."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

— TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's pass the conviction of our faith on
to our children, grandchildren
and all who will succeed us
through showing actual proof in our own practice.
By raising as many capable successors as possible,
let's create a great surge for the Law
(of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo) to long endure.

"Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbour doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood. Do not have doubts simply because heaven does not lend you protection. Do not be discouraged because you do not enjoy an easy and secure existence in this life."

"Whenever I meet someone, I think to myself, 'I may never have this opportunity again,' and put all of being into that interaction. I have travelled throughout Japan and around the world, blazing a trail of friendship. I have done that based on my conviction that if I can open the way, young people will follow after me and, as they do, be encouraged by my efforts and what I have been able to achieve.

"That's why I have won. That's why I've been able to build a vast network for peace around the world. When we win, the number of friends and allies we have increases, and that is an important positive force.

"Because we live in a corrupt and evil age, good people are persecuted. That's why it's so important for people dedicated to good to unite. It's vital that we support and encourage one another. There are many people of goodwill, of integrity, of character around the world. We need to value our connections to them.

"We must treasure each individual—that is the only way. This is the key to victory. Let's continue to advance kosen-rufu through sincere and conscientious efforts."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 26th Dec. 2013 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 27th Dec. 2013 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, Dec 26th, 2013
— TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's make sure to convey our heartfelt appreciation
to the people we interact with in our local community and work place
for all that they have done for us throughout the year!
It is the sincerity of our actions that strengthens and deepens
the ties of friendship and trust between us.

Thursday, Dec 26th, 2013
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you
to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many
Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those
persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha
lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,' cannot be
false in any way."

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Saion (1682–1761) was a great Okinawan philosopher-statesman who, in the 18th century, built the foundation for the golden age of the Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Okinawa). He is one of the most respected figures in Okinawan history. . . . A person with remarkable insight into human thought and behaviour, Saion told the following story about an encounter between a boy and an old man. It is a story of advice and encouragement....

"The young Okinawan lad in Saion's story proudly told the old man, 'I have a sword that has been handed down in my family for generations. I polish it every day, never missing a single one!' The old man then asked, 'Do you have any treasure other than the sword?' The young man replied, 'No, I don't.'

"The old man continued quietly, 'That sword is just a small treasure. You have the most wonderful treasure of all: you yourself.'[1]

"The old man's inference was, Why don't you polish the treasure that is your own life? The boy was deeply moved by the old man's words and grateful for this very important lesson.

"This story also resonates with the teachings of Buddhism. What I want to say is that we must always come back to our original point of departure, to us and to life itself. To live with dignity and reveal the full shining potential of our humanity—nothing surpasses this. Only by so doing can we as human beings find true happiness, peace, and coexistence with the natural world. . . .

"It is time we return to the starting point of the human being."

SGI Newsletter No. 8893, The following are excerpts from the 48th Soka Gakkai Headquarters Leaders Meeting in Tokyo on July 18th, 2000. These excerpts were featured in a video of the speech, which was shown during the 2nd Soka Gakkai Headquarters Leaders Meeting of the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu, held in conjunction with the Okinawa Prefecture General Meeting, in Okinawa on Dec. 8th, 2013. The excerpted text appeared in the Dec. 17th, 2013, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai daily newspaper.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Good health is the foundation for leading a happy life.
Let's always try to maintain the very best of good health
which includes doing a powerful Gongyo and sonorous Daimoku each day,
maintaining well regulated eating habits,
and making sure we get an appropriate amount of rest and sleep!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The accepting and upholding of this original Law is expressed in the
single word 'belief' or 'faith.' The singe word 'belief' is the same
sharp sword with which one confronts and overcomes fundamental
darkness or ignorance. The commentary [Words and Phrases] says,
'Belief means to be without doubt.' You should think about this."

of our vow,
let's make precious friends
who will share our eternal joy,
never sparing our voices.'"

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
When children talk,
let's try to carefully and patiently listen to what they have to say.
Such warm caring interaction leads to the further strengthening
of bonds that hold a family together.
Let's spend some meaningful, quality time with our friends and family this holiday season!

Tuesday, Dec 24th, 2013
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Strengthen your resolve more than ever. Ice is made of water, but it
is colder than water. Blue dye comes from indigo, but when something
is repeatedly dyed in it, the colour is better than that of the indigo
plant. The Lotus Sutra remains the same, but if you repeatedly
strengthen your resolve, your colour will be better than that of
others, and you will receive more blessings than they do."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, declared: 'We will never run out of people to share this Buddhism with, because each of us has been born in this world together with a great retinue of karmic companions—people bound to us by ties from the distant past. Let's sow the seeds of Buddhahood. Even though not everyone may listen to us at first, the time is sure to come when the seeds we have planted in their lives will blossom.'

— TO MY FRIENDS —
Let's not be the cause of any traffic accidents!
When driving, let's keep our eyes on the road at all times,
and exceeding the speed limit or drinking-and-driving must be strictly avoided.
By using our wisdom and good common sense,
let's spend a meaningful and valuable time
during this holiday season!

Monday, December 23rd, 2013
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Leave such people strictly alone. The time will certainly come when, by the workings of Brahmā, Shakra, and other gods, the entire Japanese nation will simultaneously take faith in the Lotus Sutra. At that time, I am convinced, many people will insist that they too have believed since the very beginning."

— WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
The Daishonin states,
"Where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward."*
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to
all those members who have dedicatedly and tirelessly played,
behind the scenes throughout the year,
the roles of support and help for all the participants at our meetings.
By taking good care of our health and always staying safe,
first and foremost,
let's add another golden year to our lives!

"Nothing is as noble, profound, and strong as prayers for the welfare and happiness of others. In Japan and around the world, the confident and compassionate voices of our members are revitalising the lives of all those they come in contact with.

"Each and every person is a supremely noble entity of the Mystic Law, embodying the principles of the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds, the hundred worlds and thousand factors, and the three thousand realms in a single moment of life (cf. WND-1, 235). Because of the profound ties we share with others in our environment, therefore, we can also transform our communities and our countries."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, Dec 21st, 2013
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's give the best encouragement we possibly can
to those youth members who are challenging themselves
to complete their goals and targets for this year by courageously
guiding their friends to practice this Buddhism!
Knowing that their seniors in faith are sincerely chanting for their victories
and are always there to support them
is the force that will help them to break down all the walls they face.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In judging the relative merit of Buddhist doctrines, I, Nichiren, believe that the best standards are those of reason and documentary proof. And even more valuable than reason and documentary proof is the proof of actual fact."

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Bodhisattva Never Disparaging of old said that all people have the Buddha nature and that, if they embrace the Lotus Sutra, they will never fail to attain Buddhahood. He further stated that to slight a person is to slight the Buddha himself. Thus, his practice was to revere all people' (WND-1, 756).

"In the Lotus Sutra, Bodhisattva Never Disparaging reaches out to greet and talk with others, conveying his respect for their Buddha nature and awakening them to it.

"Anyone who embraces the Mystic Law will attain Buddhahood. Therefore, even when Bodhisattva Never Disparaging meets with antagonism and hostility, he never lets it deter him from his efforts. He just summons even more life-force, and continues to go about teaching and spreading the Law. His tireless struggle eventually inspires even those who initially scorned him to become his followers and join the ranks of those who uphold the correct teaching of the Lotus Sutra (cf. LSOC20, 310)."

"The French philosopher Voltaire (1694–1778) declared: 'Friendship and truth must triumph over hatred and perfidy.'[1]

"The saha world in which we dwell is filled with the sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness, and death, and rife with negative influences that can lead to misfortune and misery. But all people possess within them the sun of time without beginning—the Buddha nature—that can break through all sorrow and positively transform any kind of karma, just as darkness vanishes when the morning sun rises in the sky.

"The sublime melody of friendship we create through our Buddhist practice awakens this sun in both ourselves and others, filling each new year and each new day with the light of joy."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
We are now in the busy, final stretch of the year.
Let's be creative with how we go about
cleaning, tidying up and organising our surroundings.
Let's make the kind of efforts that will help us to refresh our spirits
and prepare us for welcoming in the new year!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"But now you must build your reputation on the Lotus Sutra and give
yourself up to it."

(The True Aspect of All Phenomena - The Writings of Nichiren
Daishonin, Vol.1, page 385)

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin assures us that we will 'grow younger' (WND-1, 464) through our Buddhist practice. Therefore, in the coming year, may the youth advance with even greater energy, and the members of our Many Treasures Group, with new, rejuvenated vigour!

"By continuing our efforts to reach out to others in dialogue—inviting one person after another to join us in our dance of happiness and victory in life—let us expand our great movement of peace, culture, and education dedicated to building human solidarity and a more secure world.

"Chanting the invincible lion's roar of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, let's challenge ourselves again in 2014!

"I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year! Take care!"
