"Nichiren Daishonin says: 'For those who have profound faith, it is as though a full moon were illuminating the night' (WND–1, 94).

"No matter how big your problems, you can make yourself shine as bright as the full moon by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

"The moon appears in different shapes during the lunar cycle, sometimes showing only a half-circle or a slender crescent. Sometimes we can't see the moon at all, but the full moon always returns. Together with the sun, the moon is constantly generating a rhythm of hope.

"Whatever happens, always remain bright and positive! Please advance vibrantly with the sun and serenely with the moon!"

"Even on cloudy or snowy days, the sun continues to blaze powerfully in the heavens, sending out rays of light. Similarly, even if your hearts are clouded by worries or buffeted by hardships, the important thing is that you keep on shining in your own unique way. This is because the physical aspect reveals the spiritual aspect.'

"The Daishonin praises the lay nun Sennichi as 'a woman who embraces the lion king of the Lotus Sutra" (WND–1, 949). 'Embrace' here means to uphold the Gohonzon throughout one's life, to never stray from faith, no matter what.

"'Embracing' is another word for 'practising.' It means chanting earnestly to the Gohonzon and doing our best to participate in Soka Gakkai activities aimed at advancing kosen-rufu. By steadfastly persevering in such efforts, we can forge a fearless self and the life state of a lion king that will not be defeated by any problem or challenge."

We, too, are the eggs of ignorance, which are pitiful things, but when nurtured by the chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, which is like the warmth of the mother bird, we developed the beak of the thirty-two features and the feathers of the eighty characteristics [of the Buddha] and are free to soar into the sky of the true aspect of all phenomena and the reality of all things.'

"Having endured a freezing winter on Sado Island, Nichiren Daishonin wrote: 'Wherever we dwell and practice the single vehicle [the Lotus Sutra], that place will be the Capital of Eternally Tranquil Light'* (WND–1, 313).

"While overcoming all kinds of persecution and hardship, the Daishonin opened the way to hope and victory, showing us the means by which we can surmount any adversity, confident that 'Winter always turns to spring' (WND–1, 536).

"The key is to keep practising the Mystic Law, just as we are and in the place where we are right now. Our lives as practitioners who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are treasure towers. Our homes where the Gohonzon is enshrined and our communities where we work for kosen-rufu are 'Capitals of Eternally Tranquil Light.'"

* Capital of Eternally Tranquil Light: Synonymous with the Land of Eternally Tranquil Light. The Buddha land, which is free from impermanence and impurity. In many sutras, this world in which human beings live is described as an impure land filled with delusions and sufferings, while the Buddha land is described as a pure land free from these and far removed from this world. In contrast, the Lotus Sutra reveals the world where we live to be the Buddha land, or the Land of Eternally Tranquil Light and explains that the nature of a land is determined by the minds of its inhabitants.
