[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct. 29th + Daily Enc. Oct 30th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, October 29th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
How beautiful it is
to spend one's youth devoted to activities for kosen-rufu.
When we sincerely chant daimoku for the sake of our friends' happiness
and strive to talk with them about practicing this Buddhism,
our hearts will certainly overflow with joy and happiness!

"The wonderful means of truly putting an end to the physical and spiritual obstacles of all living beings is none other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo."

"Shakyamuni instructed: 'You must spread [the Lotus Sutra] abroad widely throughout Jambudvipa [the entire world] and never allow it to be cut off' [LSOC23, 330] (WND-1, 398). And the Daishonin declared: 'It is certain that widespread propagation of the Law will eventually be achieved throughout Jambudvipa [the entire world]' (GZ, 816). As these words indicate, the realisation of the widespread propagation of the Law--or, kosen-rufu--throughout the globe was the sincere wish of both Shakyamuni Buddha and Nichiren Daishonin.

"Seven centuries after the Daishonin's birth (in 1222), in a time of brutal war and conflict in an age described in the sutras as 'the evil age of the Latter Day of the Law,' the Soka Gakkai's founding president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and his disciple Josei Toda revived the true lifeblood of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, which was on the brink of being lost.

"As disciples directly inheriting their legacy, we have followed their example of selfless and ungrudging dedication to propagating the Law and fought our hardest for the happiness of those whose lives were steeped in pain and suffering.

"We, the mentors and disciples of Soka, have encountered untold slander and abuse, intense hatred and jealousy, as well as malicious attempts to disrupt the unity of our harmonious body of practitioners. But throughout all, we have remained unperturbed and undefeated, having been thoroughly prepared by the Daishonin's warnings that such obstacles are inevitable. The greater the persecutions and hardships we have faced, the more fiercely our hearts have blazed with lionlike courage."
SGI Newsletter No. 8095, 43RD SOKA GAKKAI HEADQUARTERS LEADERS MEETING, Leave Behind a Wonderful Record of Achievement, from the Oct. 25th, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated Oct. 26th, 2010

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct. 28th + Daily Enc. Oct 29th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, October 28th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
As early mornings and evenings begin to get chilly,
let's be sure to take good care of our health.
Let us not forget that the precautions we take
in addressing seemingly trifle things,
like wearing an extra layer of clothing,
can go a long way in protecting ourselves from illness!
Now is the time to advance cheerfully and in high spirits
without allowing carelessness to creep into our daily rhythm!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) declared:: 'What a novel my life has been!' The stories of our members challenging themselves in their human revolution, their lives dedicated to the grand adventure of kosen-rufu, would surely draw the applause and admiration of even great figures of history.

"At the same time, however, human revolution is nothing special. It all begins by taking one brave step, from what you can do right now. As the Daishonin points out. 'If a person cannot manage to cross a moat ten feet wide, how can he cross one that is a hundred or two hundred feet?' (WND-1, 766). It doesn't matter how small or insignificant the challenge or obstacle may seem, the important thing is to courageously cross that 'ten-foot-wide moat' in your daily life.

"Having the spirit to challenge yourself further is the essence of faith. No matter how good or bad your present circumstances are, keep moving forwards. The path of human revolution lies in continuously challenging your limitations and making tireless efforts.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Oct. 25th + Words of the Week Oct. 25th - 31st

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, October 25th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Rather than comparing ourselves to others,
what is far more important is that we conquer our own weaknesses,
but be patient!
It is vital that we strive to improve ourselves,
steadily and continually, and cultivate our abilities and strengths
so that we can fulfil our own very personal and unique missions,
challenging ourselves each and every day!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---

October 25th-31st, 2010
---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
The Daishonin encourages us to:
"exert ourselves in the two ways of practice and study."*
This is what the youthful SGI spirit is all about!
As the Soka Gakkai's traditional study entrance exam season
is approaching (here in Japan),
let's all study Buddhism and its great philosophy together,
and share what we learn with as many people as we possibly can!

*"Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only a single sentence or phrase." -"The True Aspect of All Phenomena", WND-I, page 386

What is it that makes us human? The answer given by Dr. Lou Marinoff, founding president of the American Philosophical Practitioners Association (APPA) and a thinker with whom I have engaged in a fruitful dialogue, is clear: "In order for us to become truly human, we have to make efforts to grow through developing our best potential." And he further states: "We need to have a good teacher to help us actualize this goal. We develop these ideal conditions to be human through learning from and practicing with the mentor. Soka Gakkai's movement of human revolution through the practice of mentor and disciple is a good example." I appreciate Dr. Marinoff's understanding of our movement.

In a work of his final years, Tolstoy wrote: "Each person's task in life is to become an increasingly better person." In essence, this is human revolution. Without this, any social revolution would be incomplete. According to Tolstoy, "If you see that the society is organized badly; and you would like to correct it, you should realize that there is only one way for society to improve. Everyone must improve. To improve everyone, you have only one method under your control-you must become a better person yourself."

"...in his famous writing 'Many in Body, One in Mind,' the Daishonin writes:

"'If the spirit of many in body but one in mind prevails among the people, they will achieve all their goals, whereas if one in body but different in mind, they can achieve nothing remarkable....Although Nichiren and his followers are few, because they are different in body, but united in mind [i.e., many in body, but one in mind], they will definitely accomplish their great mission of widely propagating the Lotus Sutra.' (WND-1, 618)

"The Daishonin states here that we cannot achieve victory if our minds are at cross purposes, no matter how large our group is or how much influence we possess. In contrast, even if our numbers are small, we will be able to accomplish all of our goals if we are united in our shared aspiration to realize kosen-rufu."

against catching a cold or influenza.
Everything depends on maintaining a good rhythm in our daily lives.

Staying healthy is the key to our advancement
(in our lives as well as towards kosen-rufu)!

Let's go all out to courageously share this hope-filled philosophy
with as many people as we possibly can.
The Gosho says that if one lights a fire for others,
one will brighten one's own way*
Let us each shine like a radiant lighthouse,

"The Daishonin writes: 'When the pine flourishes, the cypress is overjoyed, when grasses whither, orchids weep. Even insentient plants and trees share as one a friend's joys and sorrows' (WND-2, 964).

"To rejoice in our friends' happiness, to sincerely applaud their achievements, to be by their sides and encourage them when they are struggling, and to share both the good times and hard times and weather life's difficulties together with them--true unity is born from such warm-hearted and humanistic ties.

"Mr. Toda once explained unity very simply: 'To say to another member, 'Are you also facing difficulties? Are you struggling to make ends meet, too? Are you also suffering? Then together let's strengthen our faith!' This is what it means to be united in purpose.'

"The Daishonin taught the young Nanjo Tokimitsu this passage from the Lotus Sutra:
'We and other living beings all together [will] attain the Buddha way [cf. LSOC7, 168]' (cf. WND-1, 1003). We attain Buddhahood 'all together.' When we make the vow to practice the Daishonin's Buddhism with others and to grow and achieve victory together, we naturally come to be solidly united in purpose."

It's in our work places or in the home that the true stage
of our human revolution exists.
Happiness blossoms only through taking steady steps,
each and every day, proving that "faith manifests itself in daily life".*

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"...our goal is unity in the spirit of 'many in body, one in mind,' not 'one in body, one in mind.' Everyone has their own precious individuality. We are all different in a myriad of ways--in our professions, age, gender, personality, and so forth.

"Gao Zhanxiang, chairman of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society (CCPS) in China, with whom I'm currently engaged in a dialogue, said to me that respecting each other's differences is the key to growth and progress. Indeed, it is because we are all different that we can learn from each other, allow each other's talents to shine, and reveal even greater potential than we could only by ourselves.

"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, the Daishonin states that the cherry, plum, peach, and damson each embody the ultimate truth just as they are, without undergoing any change (cf. OTT, 200). The Daishonin's Buddhism is a teaching that enables each person to fully exhibit their unique characteristics.

"Unity in diversity is born through each of us working together for the unsurpassed goal of kosen-rufu, while shining brightly in the respective place of our mission. It is not something that happens as a result of a directive. It's a self-motivated unity and an alliance of people all striving to reveal their true brilliant potential.

"What matters most of all is the happiness of each person and their victory in life. One person changing their karma, one person's growth as a human being, is the basis for everything."
SGI Newsletter No. 8091, YOUTH AND THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN, Advancing with the Spirit of 'Many in Body, One in Mind'--Part 1 [of 2], from the June 18th, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated Oct. 14th, 2010

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Unity of purpose is something that must be forged by genuine disciples who base themselves on the Daishonin's spirit and boldly take their place on the front lines of the struggle.

"... The Soka Gakkai is an organisation of members firmly united in purpose--an organisation founded by presidents Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda for the sake of promoting kosen-rufu.

"The Daishonin declares that 'we win through perfect unity [i.e., the unity of many in body but one in mind]' (cf. WND-1, 618). At the same time, victory is also proof of solid unity of purpose.

"I have won in every struggle for kosen-rufu by always making 'advancing in unity'our foremost priority."

"The German sociologist Max Weber (1864-1920) once wrote of his aunt: 'When she told me on numerous occasions that her life had been a hard one, this was not a lament, rather, she meant to indicate that she had fought a good fight.' "Mount Fuji is a wondrous peak that offers immeasurable silent inspiration. The name of Mount Fuji can also be written with the Chinese characters that mean 'incomparable [literally, 'not two' or 'one and only'] mountain.' A wise man once said that the life of each one of us is incomparable and unique like Mount Fuji and that we must stand up based on the solid inner foundation we have forged.

"We are each entities of the infinitely noble Mystic Law, supreme treasure towers of life. We are each unique and irreplaceable. As such, let us stand tall like Mount Fuji, living out our lives with unshakable conviction. Let us live true to our vow from time without beginning.

"...'Be like Mount Fuji!'--that was one of the guidelines for human revolution that Mr. Toda imparted to me."
