"Ultimately, it's up to the faith of each individual whether someone becomes a good friend or bad friend. We can transform oppression and opposition into a springboard for tremendous growth in faith. Adversity is not necessarily an obstacle. Our attitude determines whether we view hardship as an obstacle or as a means to elevate and strengthen our faith.

"Please strive your hardest to vanquish the devil king of the sixth heaven and his ten kinds of troops—in other words, the devilish functions within your own lives.Daimoku gives us the strength to do that. The 'sharp sword' of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo can sever the fundamental darkness or ignorance innate in our lives. Let's make daimoku our top priority in everything we do!"

"'Evil persons too will be good friends to me'  (WND-2, Page 432), is very important.

"'Good friends' in Buddhism are those who support and assist us in our Buddhist practice. Here, however, the Daishonin is saying that 'evil persons' — namely, 'evil friends' or negative influences who persecute and try to obstruct the faith of Buddhist practitioners — are actually good friends to them.

"Why is this? Because by encountering persecution at the hands of such people, he can prove that he is indeed the votary of the lotus sutra. Just as the wind turns the sails of a windmill, adversity enables us to change our negative karma and attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. If we summon ever stronger faith with every difficulty we encounter, we will be able to turn negative influences into positive ones. In fact, that is a hallmark of genuine faith."

It's from the earnest all-out efforts 
of just one single person

Now, by summoning up more courage than ever,
let's move onwards and upwards!

It leads one person in the realm of hell, one person in the realm of hungry spirits, and thus one person in each of the nine realms of existence to Buddhahood, and thereby the way is opened for all living beings to attain Buddhahood. "Everywhere other than the Capital of Tranquil Light is a realm of suffering. Once you leave the haven of inherent enlightenment, what is there to bring you joy? I pray that you will embrace the Mystic Law, which guarantees that people 'will enjoy peace and security in their present existence and good circumstances in future existences." This is the only glory that you need seek in your present lifetime, and is the action that will draw you towards Buddhahood in your next existence. Single-mindedly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same; that will remain as the only memory of your present life in this human world."
