[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 30th June, 2015 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 1st July, 2015 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
No matter how deep our karma might be
it is certain that we can overcome it,
that is the power and strength
of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin!
By chanting with immovable conviction
let's strive to achieve results
with determined and focussed action!

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It is the heart that is important. No matter how earnestly Nichiren prays for you, if you lack faith, it will be like trying to set fire to wet tinder. Spur yourself to muster the power of faith."

(The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra WND-1, page 1000)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"All of you who are striving earnestly for kosen-rufu are 'foremost among all living beings' (LSOC23, 327). Wearing the badge of honour of noble lives praised by all Buddhas, let's forge ahead towards even greater victory in life.

"In order to build invincible, ever-victorious bastions of kosen-rufu and life, let's advance with the undefeatable spirit demonstrated by the Daishonin when he declared: 'Still I am not discouraged' (WND-1, 748).

"I am constantly praying that all our members will lead long, healthy, and fulfilling lives and enjoy boundless and immeasurable good fortune."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] June 28th 2015 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + June 29th Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, June 28th, 2015
--- TO MY FRIENDS ---
In the dialogues we have with others,
if we listen to what the other person has to say carefully,
they will open up their hearts.
By showing our honest concern and care
about the things that worry or concern them
and trying to understand their situations,
let's have the type of conversations
that are full of sincerity and enthusiasm
which will guide them to true happiness!

Sunday, June 28th, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"If you should fall into hell for some grave offense, no matter how Shakyamuni Buddha might urge me to become a Buddha, I would refuse; I would rather go to hell with you."

(The Three Kinds of Treasure - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Volume 1, page 850)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, June 28th, 2015

Monday, June 29th, 2015
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin describes faith as being of two kinds: one like fire, and the other like water. Let us again review these well-known concepts.

"'Faith like fire' corresponds to the faith of those who, when they listen to the teachings, are inspired to strive actively in their Buddhist practice, just like a fire burns brighter when logs are added, but who lose enthusiasm for their practice as time passes, just like a fire eventually burns out. This kind of faith is not self-motivated, but stimulated by external influences. That's why when the fuel or inspiration runs out, their passion is extinguished. As a result, they are susceptible to being swayed by other external influences and 'tend to discard their faith' (WND-1, 899), as the Daishonin writes.

"'Faith like water,' on the other hand, corresponds to the faith of those who have an inner-generated seeking spirit for attaining the Buddha way. Such people continue to press forwards unflaggingly, remaining steadfast in their Buddhist practice, refusing to be deterred by any external influence."

SGI Newsletter No. 9254, Learning from the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin: The Teachings for Victory, [67] "The Two Kinds of Faith." The Buddhist Spirit of Placing Utmost Importance on the "Heart", from the October 2014 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released 11th June, 2015

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, June 26th, 2015
--- TO MY FRIENDS ---
Let's transform anxiety and despair into hope and courage.
What will help our fellow members to change their inner resolve
is wholehearted encouragement, brimming with strong life force.
Let's all do our very best to offer
one-on-one personal encouragement and guidance!

Friday, June 26th, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"... in the end your father forgave you with no ill effects. And having carried through with the filial resolve you had made before, how could you be anything other than filial sons?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Treasuring each individual. Respecting everyone. This fundamental spirit of respect is the heart of Bodhisattva Never Disparaging's practice [of bowing in reverence to all people]. Treating all people with respect is the highest "behaviour of a human being" (cf. WND-1, 852).[1]

"Inspired by our shared wish to realise a peaceful world based on the humanistic principles and ideals of Nichiren Buddhism, I hope you will courageously and sincerely make every effort to engage in dialogue. Irrespective of others' attitudes, please share your beliefs with confidence and wisdom. This is the path by which both you and others can attain Buddhahood.

SGI Newsletter No. 9255, Dynamically Advancing into the New Era, (14) Accumulating Immeasurable "Treasures of the Heart," from 19th April, 2015, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun translation released 12th June, 2015.

[1] In "The Three Kinds of Treasure," Nichiren Daishonin writes: "The heart of the Buddha's lifetime of teachings is the Lotus Sutra, and the heart of the practice of the Lotus Sutra is found in the "Never Disparaging" chapter. What does Bodhisattva Never Disparaging's profound respect for the people signify? The purpose of the appearance in this world of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, lies in his behaviour as a human being" (WND-1, 851–52).

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] June 25 2015 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + June 26 2015 Daily Encouragement

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, June 25th, 2015
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin states,
"The wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat."*
It's when we hit a wall of obstacles
that we have the great opportunity to grow.
Having unyielding conviction in this point,
let's stand up and courageously take on any challenge
that we might be facing now!

*"There is definitely something extraordinary in the ebb and flow of the tide, the rising and setting of the moon, and the way in which summer, autumn, winter, and spring give way to each other. Something uncommon also occurs when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood. At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat." - "The Three Obstacles and Four Devils", WND-I, page 637

Thursday, June 25th, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter, but winter always turns to spring."

Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin",
Seikyo Shimbun, June 25th, 2015

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Makiguchi's intent was to 'demonstrate scientifically and empirically that the Mystic Law, the supreme teaching of Buddhism, is a universal law governing the lives of all people.'[1] And he indeed proved, 'by accumulating countless evidence of both fortune or misfortune, that the Mystic Law is not merely an abstract philosophical truth but an infinite source of life force that is manifested in the actuality of daily life.'[2] In other words, he said, 'it became possible to prove in every case and to absolutely anyone that Nichiren Buddhism is an infallible law of life.'[3]

"The Daishonin writes: 'Nothing is more certain than actual proof' (WND-1, 478). One example of actual proof is more effective in the effort to achieve kosen-rufu than a million words of theory."

To all of our "Mamoru Kai" group members
(volunteer cleaning groups for SGI community centres),
we are all so grateful for your dedicated efforts
to keep our "Kosen-rufu castles" so clean and tidy.
When the weather gets hot,
please take every possible measure to prevent
from suffering from heat exhaustion or heatstroke,
by constantly keeping yourselves hydrated, etc..
Please take good care of yourselves and stay healthy,
first and foremost!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"All disciples and lay supporters of Nichiren should chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim. This spiritual bond is the basis for the universal transmission of the ultimate Law of life and death."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The 'Life Span' (16th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra closes with the Buddha saying that he constantly asks himself how he can help all people attain Buddhahood:

"At all times I think to myself:
How can I cause living beings
to gain entry into the unsurpassed way
and quickly acquire the body of a Buddha? (LSOC16, 273)

"Let us continue to answer this question day after day through our vibrant, dedicated efforts for kosen-rufu. And let us always strive cheerfully together as members of a harmonious gathering overflowing with the noble virtues of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity, united by ties that transcend the bounds of life and death."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd - 28th June 2015 Words of the Week, 22nd June Daily Gosho + 23rd June Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

June 22nd-28th, 2015
-- Words of the Week --
A person who tries to introduce others
to Nichiren Buddhism
is indeed an emissary of the Buddha.
Therefore, there is no need to feel afraid or be hesitant.
As the Daishonin states,
"But still I am not discouraged,"*
let's share this Buddhism with as many people as we can,
proudly and with confidence!

*"Because I have expounded this teaching, I have been exiled and almost killed. As the saying goes, 'Good advice grates on the ear.' But still I am not discouraged. The Lotus Sutra is like the seed, the Buddha like the sower, and the people like the field. If you deviate from these principles, not even I can save you in your next life." - "The Essentials for Attaining Buddhahood" - WND-I, page 748

Monday, June 22nd, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Deep in the Snow Mountains lives a bird called the cold-suffering bird that, tortured by the numbing cold, cries that it will build a nest in the morning. Yet when day breaks, it sleeps away the hours in the warm light of the morning sun without building its nest. So it continues to cry vainly throughout its life."

(Letter to Niike - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 1027) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, June 22nd, 2015

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"There is a pioneering women's division member in Shikoku [the smallest of Japan's four main islands] who devotedly cared for both her aged mother and mother-in-law. While facing a series of hardships—including harassment by authoritarian Nichiren Shoshu priests, her own illness, the death of her beloved son—she continued to participate in Soka Gakkai activities together with her husband, committed to advancing even one step, even one millimetre, every day.

"Having emerged triumphant over all, she says with a smile: 'Tears of gratitude fill my eyes, knowing that all the hardships I went through were to show others the power of the Mystic Law. Those hardships made me want to share Nichiren Buddhism with everyone and help them become happy.'"

SGI Newsletter No. 9257, A Bright Gathering of Eternity, Happiness, True Self, and Purity, from the July 2015 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 18th June, 2015

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 21st June, 2015 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 22nd June, 2015 Daily Encouragement

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Sunday, June 21st, 2015
— TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin teaches,
"Trifling matters accumulate to become grave ones."*
Even the smallest victories, when accumulated,
open up a path to great joyful victories.
Let's advance, even if it is one step,
or even just half a step.
Let's succeed in the challenges we face today!

*"Dewdrops accumulate to form a stream, and streams accumulate to form the great ocean. Particles of dust accumulate to form a mountain, and mountains accumulate to form Mount Sumeru. And in the same way, trifling matters accumulate to become grave ones." - "The Bodies and Minds of Ordinary Beings", WND-I, page 1133

Sunday, June 21st, 2015
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"If Nichiren's compassion is truly great and encompassing, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo will spread for ten thousand years and more, for all eternity, for it has the beneficial power to open the blind eyes of every living being in the country of Japan, and it blocks off the road that leads to the hell of incessant suffering."

(On Repaying Debts of Gratitude
- The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin,
Volume 1, page 736)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin",
Seikyo Shimbun, June 21st, 2015

Monday, June 22nd, 2015
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"It is very noble for those caring for family members who are ill or aged to find the time to take part in activities for kosen-rufu. Families who strive in this way will create boundless treasures of the heart, and their compassionate teamwork will shine as a model of hope and inspiration for their communities."
