The Daishonin asserts,
"A hundred years of practice 

in the Land of Perfect Bliss 

cannot compare to the benefit 

gained from one day's practice 

in the impure world."*
It is most certain that 

if we willingly jump in and engage 
in the midst of a relentless situation 

for the sake of kosen-rufu,
our lives will be brilliantly adorned 

with immeasurable good fortune
and benefit.
Now, courageously and resolutely, 

let's forge ahead, even more!

"This life time is limited, but when we dedicate ourselves to advancing kosen-rufu  and perpetuating the law, our lives will live on eternally in and through our successors–in whom we can be seen, as the Daishonin says above–who will surely and steadily carry on our legacy.

"This vow for kosen-rufu transcends feelings of sadness and grief at the transience of life."

"'Without a single exception all…will become Buddhas'—these words encapsulate the ultimate humanism of Buddhism. Buddhist compassion excludes no one. We pray for the happiness of and shine a light on each person as someone whose life matters."

"Person-to-person bonds – that is what counts above all else.

"Behind each person we interact with is a whole host of family members and friends. This web of human relationships is infinite. Sincerely encouraging and imparting hope to one person is an incredible cause for encouraging countless unknown others."

"My first concrete step in advancing kosen-rufu was made from my local organisation, the chapter [centred in Tokyo's Ota Ward]. In a major breakthrough, we doubled the previous monthly record by welcoming a total of 201 new member households to our chapter that February.

"I had personally decided on a goal of 200 member households from the outset, but as a chapter, we made it our goal to achieve two new member households per unit [present-day group], the smallest organisational level within the Soka Gakkai. That gave us all an immediate, personal target that we vowed to fulfil, as opposed to some far-off, and unreachable goal. We each stood up to take initiative, with the spirit of repaying the debt of gratitude to our mentor. We prayed and took action with courage, meeting and talking with people and reaching out to encourage those around us.

"... At times when our sincere goodwill was rejected or scorned, we encouraged and cheered one another on: 'You did great!' 'All hardships for kosen-rufu turn into benefit!' 'Let's try again!'

"The barrier we broke through in the campaign was actually a barrier in our own hearts, our own self-imposed limits, the temptation to give up, feeling that our goal was too difficult and we could never achieve it."

"Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a near contemporary of our founding president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944), who was 10 years his junior. Tagore wrote:

'The brilliance of the sun

shines in human courage— 

its rays dispelling all darkness from the earth.'*

 

"The sun burns without pause. Its energy is generated in its core, from where it moves unceasingly over a vast period of time to the sun's surface before finally reaching the Earth. The sun nurtures life and illuminates all things on our planet.

"Nichien Daishonin,  the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, adopted the character for 'sun' (Jpn Nichi) as part of his name. 

"He always showed utmost care and support for each person and encouraged them with words that were like the sun's life-giving rays. And he helped one person after another bring the eternal sun of their inner Buddhahood to shine forth and dispel the darkness of all forms of misery from their lives."

It is also defined by unparalleled unity in diversity based on the 'Great wisdom of equality' (LSOC 11, 209-10). It is a realm where individuals freely reveal their unique capacities in accord with the principle of 'cherry, plum, peach and damson blossoms' (cf.OTT, 200) while striving together in common purpose 'with the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim' (WND–1, 217).

"The Daishonin writes: 'In judging the relative merits of Buddhist doctrines, I, Nichiren, believe that the best standards are those of reason and documentary proof. And even more valuable than reason and documentary proof is the proof of actual fact' (WND-1, 599).

"In a more general sense, too, when weighing whether a certain ideal or principle being advocated is valid, we need to ask whether there is written or reported evidence, whether it is reasonable and universally sound and whether there is solid proof of its value in people's lives or in society."

This declaration of gender equality in 13th century Japan shines as a beacon in the annals of human history. In other words, every single person who embraces the Gohonzon and chants Nam-myoho-renge-kyo regardless of gender identity or expression, can absolutely become happy.

"That's why it is important not only to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo ourselves, but to also teach others to do the same. That is what is meant by practice for oneself and others. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is a practice open to all people, no matter who they are, what their background is, or where they're from."

"The Daishonin States that we are without a doubt the Bodhisattvas of the Earth. We are all noble bodhisattvas who have appeared voluntarily in this world with a mission for kosen-rufu. Bodhisattvas are people who work actively for world peace and the happiness of others, bringing their own lives to shine in the process.

"Bodhisattvas of the Earth are great bodhisattvas on a par with the Buddha who have chosen to be born in this evil age rife with problems and suffering. As a result, they experience the same problems and suffering as everyone. But their life state is different because they are proudly aware of their important mission.

"The Bodhisattvas of the Earth never give in to adversity. While themselves going through hardships, they encourage and support those who are struggling and live in a way that inspires hope in others. Reaching out to those around them, they convey through their personal examples the truth that we can overcome all misfortune and become happy."

"The Daishonin writes: 'If you are of the same mind as Nichiren, you must be a Bodhisattva of the Earth'* (WND–1, 385). The Bodhisattvas of the Earth are profoundly noble. Entrusted with spreading the Mystic Law in the evil age of the Latter Day, they appear in this world in accord with their vow to actualise kosen-rufu. Soka Gakkai members are all Bodhisattvas of the Earth.

"Put simply, kosen-rufu means building a happy, peaceful world in which everyone is glad to have been born, appreciates their life and can lead an enjoyable, fulfilling existence in harmony with others. It is just as we say in our silent prayers at the end of gongyo every morning and evening: 'I pray for peace throughout the world and the happiness of all living beings.'"
