-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's chant with strong determination
and confidently and dynamically put our faith into action!
Let's also make every effort
to have cheerful conversations with others,
(helping and showing people what our movement is all about.)
The Buddhist gods, the protective forces of the universe,
will definitely assist those
who dedicate themselves to achieving kosen-rufu.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"On the other, it is to voice what one truly has in mind. Thus one's thoughts are expressed in one's voice. The mind represents the spiritual aspect, and the voice, the physical aspect. The spiritual aspect manifests itself in the physical."

Hip hip hurray for Soka Mother's Day!*
What makes our Soka mothers happier than anything else
is when they see the Men's Division members' making progress
and the Youth Division members' taking the initiative in activities.
Let's always take action based on a strong sense of appreciation!

Monday, April 26th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"As Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The Law does not spread by itself: because people propagate it, both people and the Law are respectworthy' (GZ, 856).

"It all comes down to our awareness of our mission and responsibility as leaders. It comes down to whether we are able to really exert ourselves bravely and vigorously in our efforts for kosen-rufu, taking pride and joy in them and seeing them as a source of good fortune and benefit. This is a point I'd like to emphasise.

"A life dedicated to kosen-rufu, aspiring for the happiness of all humanity, is the most wonderful life possible. As leaders of kosen-rufu, we may go through many hardships, but the joy and growth we experience will be all the greater as a result. We will savour a state of life hundreds and thousands of times more sublime than any millionaire or monarch.

"All of you, my friends are noble champions of this spirit."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho April 24th + Daily Enc. April 25th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, April 24th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
"Though evils may be numerous,
they cannot prevail over a single great truth."*
My dear SGI friends,
advance steadfastly along the great path of justice and truth.
Like a roaring courageous lion king, speak out,
refute all injustice and lies,
and be victorious!

*"Many in Body, One in Mind" - WND-I, page 618

Saturday, April 24th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"To offer an analogy, if in spring and summer one ploughs the field and plants it with seed, then in autumn and winter one may reap and store away the harvest, and all will proceed as one wishes it to. It may seem like a long wait from spring to autumn, and yet within the space of a single year one's wishes will be fulfilled. And in like manner, it may seem a long time to wait in order to enter the state of enlightenment and manifest our Buddhahood. And yet such a manifestation may be accomplished within the space of a single lifetime, and we ourselves can become Buddhas who possess the three bodies within a single body."

(On the Ten Factors - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.2, page 79)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, April 24th, 2010

Sunday, April 25th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In one of his writings, the Daishonin wrote to Shijo Kingo, who was facing various obstacles: 'Live so that all the people of Kamakura will say in your praise that Nakatsukasa Saburo Saemon-no-jo [Shijo Kingo] is diligent in the service of his lord, in the service of Buddhism, and in his concern for other people' (WND-1, 851).

"It is the quintessential power of faith that enables one to become a great victor in life on whom others can rely and depend--be it in the sphere of work, Buddhism, or society. Becoming such a victor is also brilliant proof of one's human revolution."

SGI Newsletter No. 7978, YOUTH AND THE WRITINGS OF NICHIREN DAISHONIN, Work and Faith--Part 2 [of 2], from the February 18th, 2010, issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, translated April 12th, 2010

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Though these are troubled times, please don't allow yourselves to be defeated. Be strong and wise and develop your abilities. "The Ikegami brothers, two of the Daishonin's followers, were from a family that was engaged in construction and engineering projects for the Kamakura military government. Due to slander by their colleagues, however, they were not contracted to participate in the reconstruction of the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine. In other words, they had lost a job they had been counting on.

"The Daishonin wrote a letter to encourage the deeply disappointed brothers at that time, saying that this setback was surely 'the design of the heavens' (WND-2, 950). In short, it definitely had some profound meaning or significance for them. He also advised: 'Avoid any appearance of ill will or resentment [because of not obtaining the construction job].... Be sure to carry your saw and hammer in your hands or hook them at your waist, and always wear a smile' (WND-2, 950).

"Don't despair when things don't go as you had hoped. Don't become depressed and sorry for yourself. Be patient and persevere, putting down solid roots and creating the cause for more fortunate circumstances to present themselves in the future. Faith is about putting down roots of happiness in the soil of our present reality. Eventually sprouts will appear and flowers will begin to bloom in beautiful profusion signalling the arrival of a spring of victory and success.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho April 22nd + Daily Enc. April 23rd

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Buddhism expounds the hope-filled principle of
'changing poison into medicine'*!
The extent to which we encounter suffering
is the extent to which we can grow.
Let us enjoy playing out the wonderful drama of a winning life,
looking at all hardships and sufferings as our honour!

* SGI President Ikeda, states: "The power of the Mystic law to 'change poison into medicine' is absolute. The purpose of faith is to transform our karma and enjoy a life of unparalleled happiness. Prayer to the Gohonzon, chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, is not abstract or theoretical. It is a burning inner flame to be victorious. If that flame of resolve blazes in our heart the instant we chant, we have already won. It is, as the Daishonin declares, like 'a lantern lighting up a place that has been dark for a hundred, a thousand, or ten thousand- years.' (WND-1, 23) This is the practice of human revolution that is accessible to all." (May 15, 2010, World Tribune, p.5)

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho April 21st + Daily Enc. April 22nd

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To our precious exemplary members of the great city of Tokyo,
advance with the courage of a charging lion,
never allow anything to come in your way of clinching victory!
Your mission, as the stronghold of our organisation,
is undoubtedly to take the lead in accomplishing the "Complete Victory of Soka"!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"All humanity owes a profound debt to women and mothers. Having a sense of gratitude for them is the guiding light of a culture of peace. Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'In order to repay my debt to my mother, I have vowed to enable all women to chant the daimoku of this sutra [i.e., Nam-myoho-renge-kyo]' (WND-1, 931).

"The undertaking of 'establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land,' set forth by the Daishonin, is the endless challenge of ridding the world of tragedies that inflict pain and suffering on mothers and children and instead creating peaceful societies that are radiant with their happy smiles.

"The Daishonin continued to warmly encourage the lay nun Ueno, the mother of Nanjo Tokimitsu, who was mourning the loss of her husband and young son. In one letter to her, he writes: 'One who embraces the Lotus Sutra will realise that hell is itself the Land of Tranquil Light' (WND-1, 456). Through her steadfast faith, the lay nun Ueno paved the way to victory for her entire family.

"The lotus flower blooms with unsullied purity from the midst of the muddy waters. We of the SGI are propagating the Mystic Law precisely so that mothers and indeed all those who have experienced great hardships and travails can attain unsurpassed happiness in life."

"Pursuing Buddhist learning that has practical relevance, enabling us to show proof of our practice in society by basing our lives on the Gosho, is the spirit of the Soka Gakkai.

"In the diary I kept during my youth, I wrote: 'No matter how high our leadership positions, if we fail to study seriously, we will be left behind.... The Daishonin's words, 'Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study' [WND-1, 386], apply equally to everyone. No one is an exception.' When we lose our seeking spirit towards Buddhist learning, we open the door for arrogance to creep into our lives.

Be ready to use your voice to lift the spirits of your co-workers and brighten the atmosphere at your workplace.

try to be the type of person who really cares
and looks out for others,
so much so, that people say:

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The growth of our SGI movement based on the principle that Buddhism is manifested in society is also significant from the standpoint of human history. Mr. Toda emphasised the need to foster people with a sound philosophical foundation for the sake of society, and warned us against becoming people whose faith and practice was divorced from the realities of society. He aspired for our members to develop into leaders who would contribute to their country and the world.

"Genuine Buddhist practitioners are concerned not only with their own happiness, but the happiness of others and the welfare of society and strive to work towards that end.

"The hearts of many people these days are empty and barren inside. There are also large numbers of young people who are suffering, feeling lost and alienated, trying to find their way in the darkness.

"I would like each of you...to be the kind of people who can impart encouragement and hope to others of your generation. May your presence shine as a spiritual safe haven or safety net for those who are struggling. It is through realising a growing solidarity of good people in society that we will be able to change the times."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho April 13th + Daily Enc. April 14th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
No matter how strong the winds of adversity may blow,
or how bad the situation might get,
never retreat even a single step.
Boldly challenge the situation,
tell yourself: "Now is the time to turn it around".
Stand up once again and, firmly based on faith,
create a glorious, unprecedented history!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Challenging yourself to contribute to kosen-rufu even in some small way although you're extremely busy--that spirit is truly noble. The benefit you gain when you make an earnest effort to participate in SGI activities, even if it's only for a short time, is immense. Remember, the more challenging your circumstances, the greater the opportunity you have to grow and develop. As Nichiren Daishonin assures us: 'A hundred years of practice in the Land of Perfect Bliss cannot compare to the benefit gained from one day's practice in the impure world' (WND-1, 736).

"What matters is that your heart is directed toward kosen-rufu. The key is to have the attitude: 'Even though I can't attend the meeting today, I'll do my utmost at work, regarding everything as part of my Buddhist practice'; or 'I'm going to knuckle down today so that I can finish up all my work and have time on the weekend for activities'. or 'No matter how busy or tired I am, I'll chant some daimoku to support everyone's efforts, even if only a minute or two.' If you have this outlook, you have already won. Such strong inner resolve will activate the protective forces of the universe and allow you to move in a positive direction without fail.

"Everyone has their own unique situations and circumstances."

"Respectful conduct towards others like that epitomised by Bodhisattva Never Disparaging in the Lotus Sutra. A strong commitment unshaken by any opposition or obstacle. A readiness to stand up against inhumanity and injustice. A wonderful example of winning trust in our immediate environment and promoting understanding of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. [SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho April 10th + Daily Enc. April 11th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, April 10th, 2010
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
All of our "uncrowned heroes" carry such great noble
missions to link the hearts of mentor and disciple
through their deliveries of the Seikyo Shimbun
and our other SGI publications.
In exact accordance with each step you take
our victorious advancement begins.

Saturday, April 10th, 2010
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It must be ties of karma from the distant past that have destined you to become my disciple at a time like this. Shakyamuni and Many Treasures certainly realised this truth. The sutra's statement, 'Those persons who had heard the Law dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers,' cannot be false in any way."

(The Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 217)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, April 10, 2010

Sunday, April 11th, 2010
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"A genuine spirit of concern for all people means we will uphold a philosophy of respect for others and battle negative functions that cause people suffering, while refusing to condone violence or oppression that threatens human dignity or equality. If we see the spread of thinking that justifies using human life as a means to an end or that divides and discriminates against people, then we must vigorously denounce the misguided teachings or ideas that form the spiritual soil for such thought. It is a battle against the fundamental darkness or ignorance that plunges people's lives into suffering and misery. This is the essence of the 'battle between the provisional teachings and the true teaching,' and the crux of the shakubuku spirit in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism.

"In essence, this means firmly believing in the Buddha nature of oneself and others, and therefore respecting all people. The heart of shakubuku is a spirit of compassion. And because the practice of shakubuku also involves resolutely battling the devilish nature or fundamental darkness that derides human dignity, it also constitutes a fearless spirit of refutation in which compassion gives rise to courage.

"We of the SGI have been able to carry out interfaith and intercivilisational dialogue due to our commitment to humanism, which is guided by the compassionate spirit to speak out against evils that trample on human dignity and people's fundamental rights. Because of this, it is possible for us to join together with other religions and philosophies that share the common values of respect for human beings and the dignity of life in what Mr. Makiguchi termed 'humanistic competition' channelled towards eradicating human misery and suffering. Indeed, it is an indispensable requirement of religion in the 21st century to denounce all abuses of human dignity."
