"Life is the foremost of all treasures."

(The Gift of Rice - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 1125)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The deeper the darkness that shrouds society, the brighter Nichiren
Daishonin's Buddhism shines--for it teaches us how we can transform anything
negative into something positive, in accord with the principle of changing
poison into medicine.

"My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, often said: 'Unless we
make earnest efforts to develop a foundation of strong faith, we will
readily be swept away by the ever-changing tides of the times.' He also
said: 'Let's do our best! Stand firm, no matter what happens.' The important
thing is to forge ahead decisively with the heart of a lion king."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The power to achieve kosen-rufu is found in the solidarity of true
champions. Victory cannot be attained by a crowd of bystanders or a
disordered collection of people who lack self-reliance; it can only be
achieved through the unity of champions who each resolve to take full
responsibility on their own. Courage and strength well up in those who
consciously take on everything as the protagonist and person responsible for
achieving their goals. Unlimited wisdom and ardent resolve also surge forth.
And by striving with unstoppable vigour and boldness, they will experience
vitality, fulfilment, and joy.

"As the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) once wrote: 'Those who live
for a lofty purpose experience constantly increasing goodness.'"

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Dec. 29th + Words of the Week Dec. 29th - Jan 4th 2009

Translations of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" and
"Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, December 29th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It is said,
"Don't halloo till you are out of the woods."
Overconfidence is our greatest enemy,
especially after a successful achievement.
Buddhism is all about 'true cause'.*
"From now is what matters! I'm ready for a new challenge!"
Let's always have such a spirit, such a fresh new determination.

*Whether experiencing suffering or joy, we need to
continue chanting the Mystic Law with the prayer in our
hearts to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. No matter
what happens, we need to continue advancing a step at a
time towards kosen-rufu, in high spirits and with robust
hearts. Those who maintain such a strong mind of faith
moment by moment will be embraced in the original Buddha's
immense and boundless compassion. This is the wonderful
essence of the Buddhism of the "mystic principle of true
cause."
(Lectures on the "Expedient Means" and "Life Span"
Chapters of the Lotus Sutra by Daisaku Ikeda, Volume 3,
page 24)

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"It goes without saying, therefore, that persons who study
the teachings of Buddhism must also [observe the ideal of
filial piety and] understand and repay their obligations."

Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, December 29th, 2008

December 29th, 2008 - January 4th, 2009
---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
Thank you all so very much for all your selfless,
dedicated efforts,
that made this whole year a great victory and success!
The Daishonin encourages us,
"You will grow younger, (and your good fortune will
accumulate.)"*
Brimming with a youthful and passionate spirit, more than ever,
let's together launch off on a fresh start towards the victory
of 'Mentor and Disciple'!

Sutra--these, the Buddha says, are truly hard to measure."

Let's all stay absolutely accident free especially during

What is important is that each of us decides,
"I'm not going to let a fire or any other kind of accident
occur!"'
First and foremost,
let's chant daimoku earnestly and seriously about this!

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & daily Gosho Dec. 26th + Daily Enc. Dec 27th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Friday, December 26th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It is only through battling through storms of hardship that one becomes
a truly great individual.
Remember the Buddhist principle, "Earthly desires are enlightenment".
For those of you who are encountering trying times,
I assure you that now is the time to make the greatest development,
the greatest growth,
keep the flame of faith and practice burning brightly, more than ever.

*"When Nichiren and his followers recite
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are burning the firewood of
earthly desires, summoning up the wisdom fire of bodhi or
enlightenment." - The Record of the Orally Transmitted
Teachings, page 11
**"Overcoming problems, realising long-cherished goals and
dreams--this is the kind of daily life from which we
derive our sense of accomplishment and happiness. SGI
President Ikeda has emphasized the importance not of
severing our attachments, but of understanding and,
ultimately, using them." (http://www.sgi.org/desires.html)

Friday, December 26th, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Now, no matter what, strive in faith and be known as a
votary of the Lotus Sutra, and remain my disciple for the
rest of your life. If you are of the same mind as
Nichiren, you must be a Bodhisattva of the Earth."

(The True Aspect of All Phenomena - The Writings of
Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page 385) Selection source:

Saturday, December 27th, 2008
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In order to advance kosen-rufu within the community, we should insure that
Gakkai activity centres become a source of pride for all the neighbouring
residents. And when we hold activities there, we need to always be
considerate about such things as parking and noise, so that the neighbours
will not be bothered or inconvenienced. It's important that we conduct
ourselves in such a way that residents feel that a Soka Gakkai centre makes
their communities more bright, vibrant, and prosperous.

"Another reason to build large, structurally sound activity centres is so
that residents will be able to use them as evacuation centres in the event
of natural disasters, such as earthquakes or typhoons. Our facilities should
offer protection to the community, help it flourish, and give its residents
joy. Soka Gakkai centres should be like lighthouses contributing to the
development of the local area. We should protect and care for our centres as
if we were the keepers of a lighthouse."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Dec. 24th + Daily Enc. Dec. 25th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo
Shimbun and more.

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The brilliant light of Buddhist wisdom
radiates throughout our character and finds expression in our actions.
Oh youth of Soka!
Manifest this wisdom in every aspect of your lives
and may you shine brilliantly as wonderful and capable individuals!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"...by all means persist in preaching the Lotus Sutra and causing them to
hear it. Those who put their faith in it will surely attain Buddhahood,
while those who slander it will establish a "poison-drum relationship"* with
it and will likewise attain Buddhahood."

(How Those Initially Aspiring to the Way Can Attain Buddhahood through the
Lotus Sutra - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, page 882)
Selection source: "Kyo no hosshin", December 24th, 2008

*Poison-Drum relationship: Nichiren Buddhism explains that even though some
people react negatively upon hearing about the Law, they can eventually
attain Buddhahood through this reverse relationship. (This is also called a
poison-drum relationship, in reference to a Nirvana Sutra tale of a drum
laced with a certain toxin that when beaten causes the deaths of all who
hear it, whether or not they wanted to listen to it. Similarly, the Lotus
Sutra will provide the seeds of Buddhahood to all who hear its preaching,
whether they embrace or oppose it.)

Once they hear about the Mystic Law, they will eventually embrace it, just
as a seed, once planted, will eventually sprout. For this reason, regardless
of their reactions, it is important to courageously tell others about the
greatness of Nichiren Buddhism based on a sincere desire for their
happiness—regardless of whether they respond positively or not.

Sowing the seeds by letting one hear the teaching and sowing the seeds by
leading one to arouse faith in it—these two stages of planting the seeds of
Buddhahood illustrate the importance of sharing Nichiren Buddhism with
others and thus helping them form a relationship with the Mystic Law.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Only a Buddhist teaching of fundamental transformation--one that teaches
the importance of taking action amid the tumult and turmoil of society--can
offer the means for genuinely changing this strife-filled saha world into a
Buddha land and for actualising the principle of establishing the correct
teaching for the peace of the land.

"Also, the Daishonin says that two thousand years of propagating Buddhism
during the Former and Middle Days of the Law are inferior to even a brief
time spent doing so during the Latter Day of the Law. Buddhism during the
Former and Middle Days was basically a teaching for people of superior
capacity, and benefit could be gained through even the partial or implicit
teachings.

"The Latter Day, however, is an age of quarrels and disputes,* when the
proponents of various partial and implicit teachings will all proclaim their
particular school of Buddhism to be perfect and absolute. These teachings
will function as negative influences that obstruct the spread of the correct
teaching. In such a confused and disordered age, only the teaching of
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo of the Buddhism of sowing--which directly activates the
Buddha nature--will lead people to enlightenment. That is why propagating
the correct teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for even a brief time in the
Latter Day is superior to spreading partial or implicit teachings for a long
period during the Former and Middle Days of the Law."

Great River Enriching Humanity Eternally--Our Victory as Disciples Is the
Greatest Way to Repay Our Debt of Gratitude to Our Mentor, from the October
2008 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translated Dec. 4th, 2008

*Age of quarrels and disputes: Also, age of conflict. The last of the five
five-hundred-year periods following Shakyamuni's death, which are described
in the Great Collection Sutra. It corresponds to the beginning of the Latter
Day of the Law. In the Great Collection Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha speaks to
Bodhisattva Moon Storehouse about the first four of the five
five-hundred-year periods following his death, and then says that, in the
next five hundred years, quarrels and disputes will arise among the
followers of his teachings, and that the pure Law will be obscured and lost.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Dec. 23rd + Daily Enc. Dec. 24th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
To all of our leaders and those who are in positions of responsibility:
I hope that you will do your utmost to work selflessly and wholeheartedly
for the sake of our precious members!
"You must not spend your lives in vain and regret it for ten thousand years
to come"*.
Never slacken in your efforts to reach out and encourage people!

*Gosho Source - The Problem to be Pondered Night and Day, WND - 1, Page 622.
"In the light of the above points, this shows, my followers, that you had
better cut short your sleep by night and curtail your leisure by day, and
ponder this! You must not spend your lives in vain and regret it for ten
thousand years to come."

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"(Those who put into practise even a phrase or a verse of this sutra are
certain to attain the way, for it is the teaching related to them.) This may
be likened to iron particles drawn to a magnet or dewdrops collecting on a
mirror."

page 80) Selection source: "Yasashi Kyogaku", Seikyo Shimbun, December 23rd,

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"While many religious traditions encourage aspiring for some otherworldly
paradise, the Daishonin teaches that this world, the here and now, is the
true place for carrying out Buddhist practice. He explains that opening the
way to victory amid severe trials and tribulations is itself genuine
Buddhist practice for polishing and forging our lives.

" 'One day's practice in the impure world' could also be said to epitomise a
teaching of transformation that truly leads those living in a defiled age to
happiness. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the great Law that enables us to instantly
bring forth within our lives the state of supreme enlightenment of the
Buddha. By transforming our mind or attitude, we can immediately transform
our state of life.

"Because this is an evil age, various problems and difficulties arise in the
course of daily life. It stands to reason, then, that we who choose to
dedicate our lives to a lofty mission will face even more daunting
obstacles. The key, however, is to use these obstacles as a powerful impetus
to earnestly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and actively challenge ourselves to
overcome the problems we face. Each day that we spend engaged in this manner
is one of life-changing practice, and the continuation of such practice over
time produces the great benefit of attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime."

"The most trying times represent the most wonderful opportunities for
challenging ourselves in our Buddhist practice and deepening our faith. All
of our arduous efforts at that time will turn into incalculable benefit.
Quite simply, 'a hundred years of practice in the Land of Perfect Bliss'
means Buddhist practice in a comfortable environment free of hardships. Such
circumstances would make it difficult for us to accomplish our human
revolution. And without polishing and forging our lives, the goal of
attaining the Buddha way would remain out of reach even if we practised for
a hundred years."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Dec. 20th + Daily Enc. Dec 21st

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, December 20th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Overconfidence and carelessness are our greatest enemies.
Let's always remember this.
And let's constantly remind one another of this point so that each and every
one of us can
lead a victorious life free from accident or incident.

Saturday, December 20th, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"This sutra is superior to all other sutras. It is like
the lion king, the monarch of all the creatures that run

creatures that fly in the sky."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"...the phrases 'the deeper the roots' and 'the farther the source' mean
having faith that is deep and firm. With the power of faith, we can
definitely triumph over any of the three obstacles and four devils that may
arise to assail us in the course of our struggles in life and in our work
for kosen-rufu. If we maintain a strong sense of purpose and determination
to fight for kosen-rufu, we will be able to see negativity or devilish
functions for what they are and prevail over them. Deep faith is the sharp
sword for cutting through any and all obstacles.

"In addition, the phrases 'the more prolific the branches' and 'the longer
the stream' mean that if we have the courageous faith to remain undefeated
by obstacles, we will enjoy not only success and prosperity in our own
lives, but our victory in turn will form the foundation for the success and
prosperity of our descendants for generations to come.

"Accordingly, striving earnestly for kosen-rufu, here and now, becomes the
cause for happiness and prosperity in the present and the future. All of our
hard work and effort to share the Daishonin's Buddhism is transformed into
good fortune for our families and loved ones throughout eternity. This is
the principle of causality of the Mystic Law."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The existence of our fellow members in our surrounding environment
helps to spur us all in the direction of improvement
and serves as the wellspring of our own personal advancement!
Let's grow stronger and happier together!
And let's continue to develop and expand our wonderful solidarity of great
good!

pray for order and tranquillity throughout the four quarters of the land,
should you not?"

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Mr. Toda said: 'If you have faith in the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin,
you need to exert yourself just as the Daishonin instructs. That's what
would please the Daishonin.' 'Just as the Daishonin instructs'--this is the
crucial point. If you strive for kosen-rufu, the three obstacles and the
four devils will arise, and opposition will be inevitable.

"Mr. Toda also said: 'Nichiren Daishonin boldly propagated the Lotus Sutra
unafraid of persecution by the Kamakura military government. We also need to
rouse our courage, unite, and forge ahead on the great path of kosen-rufu!'
Courage and unity are vital.

"He further stated: 'We possess the Gohonzon. The Lotus Sutra says that
wherever people have strong faith, their land [remains safe and tranquil]
(LS16, 230). What have we to fear? We mustn't be overly swayed or troubled
by the passing tide of events. If we're fainthearted, we won't be able to
accomplish the great undertaking of kosen-rufu.'"

December 15th-21st, 2008
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
To all of our youth who are in the midst of studying for entrance exams,*
we are all sincerely praying for your success and wish you all the very
best!
By offering a few words of encouragement,
even just jotting down a few lines on a postcard, etc.(can greatly help and
encourage).
Let's do our best to take care of and support our young people
so that, in the future, they will grow into mighty trees.

* The Japanese school year finishes in March of next year so from here on
until the end of February there are various forms of exams going on to

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] To My Friends & Daily Gosho Dec. 13th + Daily Enc. Dec. 14th

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Saturday, December 13th, 2008
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
There is nothing more powerful or stronger than justice and the cause of
good.
There is no one who can refute what is the plain and honest truth.
Let's summon up our courage and speak out with confidence!

Saturday, December 13th, 2008
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both
suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what happens."

(Happiness in This World - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol.1, page
681) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, December 13th, 2008

Sunday, December 14th, 2008
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The spirit of refuting falsehood and error is the essence of the
Daishonin's Buddhism. In a letter to his disciple Shijo Kingo, who spoke of
the greatness of the Mystic Law to his feudal lord, a follower of the
corrupt priest Ryokan of Gokuraku-ji temple, Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'How
admirable it is that... you communicated this teaching [the Lotus Sutra] to
your lord and urged him to take faith in it. Even though he may fail to
accept it now, you have managed to avoid the offence of complicity' (WND-1,
461). Remaining silent in the face of evil and injustice is actually a form
of support for them. It's tantamount to being an accomplice. The true spirit
of the Daishonin's Buddhism is to fight tirelessly against such abuses and
triumph through the power of words.

"The great Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) wrote: 'It is impossible
to live without a knowledge of the difference between good and evil.' One
cannot lead a truly meaningful life without being able to distinguish
between good and evil, and it is a sound philosophy of life that teaches
this."

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Thus you should understand that so long as a practitioner of the Lotus
Sutra remains unwavering in faith, free of all false alliances, entrusting
himself wholeheartedly to the Lotus Sutra and practising in accordance with
the Buddha's golden words, he will without fail be able to prevent disaster
and prolong his life in this present existence, to say nothing of in the
life to come. Splendid recompense will be his, and he will fulfil his great
vow to broadly proclaim and propagate the Lotus Sutra."

(Letter Sent with the Prayer Sutra - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin,
Vol.2, page 460) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun,

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Leaders need to be capable and to demonstrate their abilities. Crucial to
this end are the power of faith and the power of practice. For it is through
the power of faith and the power of practice that we can manifest the power
of the Buddha and the power of the Law, which constitute the ultimate force
for victory. True ability for a leader of kosen-rufu lies not in such
superficial things as being a good speaker or cutting an attractive figure.
What matters is having the spirit to fight for kosen-rufu, the spirit of not
begrudging one's life for the sake of the Law. Genuine Buddhist leaders
dedicate themselves with selfless altruism for the welfare of others.

"Our top leaders mustn't complacently think that someone else will take care
of things or do what needs to be done. If they apply themselves with even
greater seriousness and dedication, they will easily be able to bring forth
tens or even hundreds of times the ability they are now.

"We must never forget the spirit of not begrudging our lives and the spirit
of oneness of mentor and disciple."

Challenging Our Human Revolution, from the Nov. 14th, 2008, issue of the
Seikyo Shimbun, translated Dec. 9th, 2008.
