The word "heard" of "This is what I heard" cannot apply to a person of no faith. But a practitioner of the Lotus Sutra may be said to have "heard" the substance of the doctrine put forth in "This is what," etc. With regard to this, Words and Phrases, volume one, says, "'This is what,' etc., are words indicating faith and compliance. Faith means understanding of what one has heard, and compliance means that [one proceeds to follow it as] one follows the path of teacher and disciple."  In effect, then, Nichiren and his followers are persons to whom the phrase "This is what I heard" may apply.

Today again, let's start the day 

with chanting daimoku.
"This sutra can fulfill their desires,
as a clear cool pond 

can satisfy all those 

who are thirsty."*

Brimming with 

a robust life condition 

through our "faith equals health"
and speaking 

with a refreshing voice,
let's cheerfully expand 

our circle of friendships!

*"Muster your faith, and pray to this Gohonzon. Then what is there that cannot be achieved? There can be no doubt about the sutra passages that say, 'This sutra can fulfill their desires, as a clear cool pond can satisfy all those who are thirsty,' and 'They will enjoy peace and security in their present existence and good circumstances in future existences.'"

"The heavenly deities are sure to protect us. Therefore, even it the results at the time were not what we hoped for, we will win in the end and be able to look back with gratitude, realising we were indeed protected and everything that happened had a profound meaning.

"That's why it's important to advance with great confidence,'not harbouring doubts in our hearts' (WND-1, 283), and observe the Daishonin's counsel to 'not have doubts simply because heaven does not lend you protection' (WND-1, 283). By resolutely basing ourselves on 'faith for absolute victory,' *'we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood' (WND-1, 283).
