[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] Words of the Week Feb. 29th-March 1st, 2016, Daily Gosho Feb. 29th & Daily Enc. March 1st

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

February 29th - March 7th, 2016
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
Our Men's Division members,
the golden pillars of the SGI,
use the strategy of the Lotus Sutra,
to confront whatever they have to battle with.
They take on any kind of challenge
by chanting daimoku with the roar of a lion.
By visiting each of our fellow members
and encouraging them with great warmth and care,
let's establish the type of unity and solidarity
that shines throughout our local communities!

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Buddhist spirit of treasuring each individual can be supplemented by an additional perspective: the conviction that each person, whatever their path of life or their current condition, has the capacity to illuminate the place where they find themselves right now. We strive to avoid judging a person's worth or potential on the basis of present appearance and instead focus on the inherent dignity of each individual. In this way, we seek to inspire in each other the confidence to live with hope from this day forwards, bathed in the light of that dignity.

Buddhism encourages us to draw lessons and strengths from the challenges we have met in life so that we can achieve personal happiness while inspiring courage in those around us and in society as a whole. Nichiren (1222–82), the thirteenth-century Buddhist priest whose teachings underpin the activities of the SGI, emphasised that the principle that all living beings can attain Buddhahood—that all people possess an inner dignity and can realise limitless possibilities—constitutes the essence of Shakyamuni's Lotus Sutra and lies at the very heart of the Buddhist teachings."

SGI Newsletter No. 9357, SGI President Ikeda's Peace Proposal commemorating the 41st SGI Day, January 26th, 2016, Universal Respect for Human Dignity: The Great Path to Peace, translation released 22nd Feb., 2016

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The foundation of Buddhism is a belief in the inherent dignity of all people. But this is something which, as the following passage from Shakyamuni's teachings indicates, is to be awakened through a process of self-reflection and self-awareness:

"'All tremble at violence; life is dear to all. Putting oneself in the place of another, one should not kill nor cause another to kill.' [i]

"In other words, Buddhism takes as its starting point the universal human impulse to avoid suffering or harm and the undeniable sense of the unique value of our own being. It then leads us to the realisation that others must feel the same. To the degree that we can put ourselves in the place of another, we gain a tangible sense of the reality of their suffering. Shakyamuni called upon us to view the world through such empathetic eyes and thus commit ourselves to a way of life that will protect all people from violence and discrimination.

"The altruism taught in Buddhism does not arise from a negation of the self. An awareness of the unavoidable pain of our own existence and the attachment we feel to the path in life that has brought us to this point can open us to the universality of human anguish, beyond all differences of nationality and ethnicity. It is our refusal to dismiss any form of suffering as unrelated to us that brings our humanity to its true lustre."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's never be lazy or careless
when it comes to taking the necessary steps to prevent a fire.
For example, never overload electric circuits.
And be careful about properly turning off the stove
or other forms of heating when you are not around.
Always remember, carelessness is our greatest enemy!

"'If one can establish a relationship with even just one phrase of the Wonderful Law, that relationship will continue unbroken over a million kalpas, and one can bring to realisation the priceless jewel of the Great Vehicle [that is, polishing and revealing the supremely noble life state of Buddhahood], which is known as being "born in an age where one can encounter the Buddha's Law." This is the Buddha's Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.'
- From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 219.

"Throughout Japan and the world, our youthful successors are actively striving to expand our movement. Their efforts are truly noble and reassuring.

Nichiren Buddhism is the Buddhism of sowing. The good fortune of establishing a relationship with the Mystic Law is imperishable. Similarly, the benefit we accumulate through engaging in Buddhist dialogue with others will also endure throughout the three existences of past, present, and future.

Spreading the Mystic Law is an extremely difficult undertaking. Therefore, the more we challenge ourselves in this endeavour, the more we can expand our life state and build genuine friendships. Brimming with vibrant life force, let's cheerfully share our convictions in faith."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 22nd - 28th Feb. 2016 Words of the Week, 22nd Feb. Daily Gosho + 23rd Feb. Daily Encouragement

A translation of President Ikeda's "Words of the Week"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

February 22nd - 28th, 2016
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
The SGI is a world where everyone
helps to encourage each other.
It's voices of courage which are in turn voices of compassion,
that enhance people's powers of revitalisation.
The Daishonin teaches us,
"Joy means that oneself and others together experience joy." *
Let's all try to lead life cheerfully,
full of great joy and enthusiasm!

*"Chapter Eighteen: The Benefits of Responding with Joy, OTT, page 146

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"This passage refers to the great joy that one experiences when one understands for the first time that one's mind from the very beginning has been a Buddha. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the greatest of all joys."

(The Essential Passage in Each of the Twenty-eight Chapters of the Lotus Sutra, Prophecy of Enlightenment for Five Hundred Disciples -
The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, page 211)

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Faith is a constant struggle against inertia.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Strengthen your faith day by day and month after month. Should you slacken in your resolve even a bit, devils will take advantage' (WND-1, 997). He also says: 'Be ever diligent in your faith so that your desire will be fulfilled' (WND-1, 452).

"Not advancing is retreating. Mr. Toda also constantly warned against having a lax attitude in our faith and practice. He said:

"'Everything in the universe, from the stars and planets to the smallest insect, is constantly changing. Nothing remains the same for a single moment. The crucial question, therefore, is whether we are changing for the better or changing for the worse. When we fail to realise this, we give in to inertia. In other words, the frightening thing about succumbing to inertia is that we are completely oblivious and indifferent to whether we are changing for the better or the worse. Moreover, when we grow apathetic in faith, practicing only out of force of habit, it's the same as if we have stopped practising altogether. Faith in Nichiren Buddhism is an active practice for rapidly changing ourselves for the better.

"Not advancing is not just stagnating; it is regressing. There is no 'this will do' in the realm of faith. Complacence gives rise to inertia and can lead one to stop practising."
