-- TO MY FRIENDS --
In a season with dry air, like now,
let's take every possible precaution to prevent fires!
Let's never be careless about basic safety checks
such as checking heaters before using them
for the first time in the season,
and making sure outlets are not covered in dust, etc..

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"The heart of the Buddha's lifetime of teachings is the Lotus Sutra, and the heart of the practice of the Lotus Sutra is found in the 'Never Disparaging' chapter. What does Bodhisattva Never Disparaging's profound respect for people signify? The purpose of the appearance in this world of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, lies in his behavior as a human being."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"There are countless people in the world whose hearts have been wounded in some way. We need to extend a healing hand to such individuals. Through such efforts, we in fact heal ourselves.

"When beset by some misfortune, people tend to think that no one could possibly be as unhappy or unlucky as they are. They feel sorry for themselves and become blind to everything but their own situation. They wallow in their suffering, feeling dissatisfied and hopeless, which only saps their life force further.

"At such times, what gives someone the strength to go on living? It seems to me that it is human bonds—the desire to live for the sake of others. As long as we are wrapped up in ourselves, there is no happiness. When we courageously take action for others, the wellspring of our own life is replenished.

"When we look after and care for others—that is, help others draw forth their life force—our own life force increases. When we help people expand their state of life, our state of life also expands. That is the wonderful thing about the bodhisattva way. The practice for benefiting others is one and the same with the practice for benefiting ourselves.

"To only speak of benefiting others leads to arrogance. It conveys a sense of self righteousness, as if we are somehow doing others a favour by "saving" them. Only when we recognise that our efforts on others behalf are also for our own sake will we be filled with humble appreciation for being able to develop our lives.

"Our lives and the lives of others are ultimately inseparable. It is vital, therefore, that we follow the bodhisattva way."

SGI Newsletter No. 9112, The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 1: Happiness, Chap. 5: Happiness for Both Ourselves and Others, from the October 2014 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 27th Oct., 2014

"The Daishonin plainly states that true happiness means possessing both wisdom and compassion — in other words, the life state of Buddhahood. If one has wisdom but lacks compassion, one's life will be closed and constricted. Such wisdom, then, is not genuine. To have compassion but lack wisdom or behave in a foolish manner is to be of no help to anyone, including oneself. And compassion that is incapable of helping anyone cannot be said to be genuine.

"Only faith in the Mystic Law encompasses both wisdom and compassion. The Daishonin clearly states: 'Now, when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are expressing joy in the fact that they will inevitably become Buddhas eternally endowed with the three bodies'[1] (OTT, 146). This in itself is 'the greatest of all joys' (OTT, 212).

"President Toda maintained that 'individual happiness and social prosperity must go hand in hand.' The individual happiness referred to here is not self-centred; rather, it means cultivating true humanity—developing into a person who possesses wisdom and compassion and helping others do the same.

"The Lotus Sutra (Nam-myoho-renge-kyo) has the power to actualise both individual happiness and social prosperity."

SGI Newsletter No. 9112, The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 1: Happiness, Chap. 5: Happiness for Both Ourselves and Others, from the October 2014 issue of the Daibyakurenge, translation released 27th Oct., 2014

[1] The three bodies of the Buddha refer to the Dharma body, the reward body, and the manifested body. The Dharma body is the fundamental truth, or Law, to which a Buddha is enlightened. The reward body is the wisdom to perceive the Law. And the manifested body is the compassionate actions the Buddha carries out to lead people to happiness.

"Nichiren Daishonin declares: '"Joy" means that oneself and others together experience joy. . . . Both oneself and others together will take joy in their possession of wisdom and compassion' (OTT, 146).

"Both ourselves and others matter. Caring only about one's own happiness is selfish. Claiming to care only about the happiness of others is hypocritical. Real 'joy' lies in both ourselves and others becoming happy together.

"Second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda said: 'Becoming happy yourself is no great challenge; it's quite simple. But the essence of Nichiren Buddhism lies in helping others become happy, too.'"[1]

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, Oct 28th, 2014
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Though we might find ourselves in the midst of a hectic life,
let's try to spare some time to read!
Even five minutes of reading a day can go a long way.
A person who is constantly investing time in learning
is never deadlocked!

Tuesday, Oct 28th, 2014
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Today there are people who have faith in the Lotus Sutra. The belief of some is like fire while that of others is like water. When the former listen to the teachings, their passion flares up like fire, but as time goes on, they tend to discard their faith. To have faith like water means to believe continuously without ever regressing."

"Our warm and welcoming SGI gatherings—open to members and guests alike—shine as in light of hope illuminating our communities. As frozen hearts melt, trust grows. When we foster strong ties with our neighbours and others close to us, the realm of Soka will become a safe haven for them at a crucial moment.

"No matter how others may respond, let's take the initiative to greet them and expand the circle of those who have a connection with Nichiren Buddhism. Our women's division members are role models in this sphere.

"In helping others, working for their happiness—a sense of purpose shines. Doing so gives us joy and the strength to live our lives. It enables us to do our human revolution.

"Nichiren Daishonin states: '"Joy" means that oneself and others together experience joy' (OTT, 146). True joy and the greatness of faith lie in the fact that we strive not only for our own happiness but help others become happy, too. Our sincere concern and prayers for others will definitely be understood by them someday."

Oct 27th-Nov 2nd, 2014
— WORDS OF THE WEEK --
We practice a faith that enables us
to overcome any and all obstacles.
The Mystic Law is the absolute law (of the universe).
With such unyielding conviction,
let's chant daimoku until we overcome
the challenges that confront us now.
All of our struggles to overcome our present hardships
will definitely transform into priceless assets in our lives.

Monday, Oct 27th, 2014
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"When the people all chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the wind will no longer buffet the branches, and the rain will no longer break the clods of soil. The world will become as it was in the ages of Fu Hsi and Shen Nung. In their present existence the people will be freed from misfortune and disasters and learn the art of living long."

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Single-mindedly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same; that will remain as the only memory of your present life in this human world."

(Questions and Answers about Embracing the Lotus Sutra - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, Page 64) Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, Oct 26th, 2014

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Basing everything on the Gosho is the unchanging formula for being ever victorious that is alive and vibrant in Kansai.

"During that intense time of the Osaka campaign I presented a young women's division member with a Gosho passage and encouraged her to always keep it in mind. It is the passage from 'The Opening of the Eyes': 'Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbour doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood…. Foolish men are likely to forget the promises they have made when the crucial moment comes' (WND-1, 283).

"True faith is tested in times of adversity. True commitment to the path of mentor and disciple is tested when one is alone.

"Later, that young woman moved to Brazil, which became her noble place of mission. Keeping this Gosho passage in her heart, she strove tirelessly as a women's division leader to the end of her life, and helped build a solid foundation for kosen-rufu in South America.

"In the light of the Daishonin's writings, the ties forged through a life dedicated to the Mystic Law endure eternally throughout the three existences of past, present, and future.

"At this special time of the autumn equinox [when the deceased are traditionally remembered in Japan], I am praying sincerely for the eternal happiness of all our deceased fellow members, as well as that of the deceased relatives and ancestors of our precious members everywhere."

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Those with the heart of a lion king are sure to attain Buddhahood."

(Letter from Sado - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol. 1, Page )

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Speaking of the attitude we should adopt in studying the Gosho, Mr. Toda once said:

"'You should be aware that all of Nichiren Daishonin's[1] writings are based on faith [in the Mystic Law]. . . . You should realise that unless you grasp the fact that the Daishonin's passionate spirit and his profound confidence of leading all people to enlightenment form the basis of his writings, your efforts in studying the Gosho will be meaningless.'

"It is vital to study with absolute faith and take action for kosen-rufu in accord with the Daishonin's great confidence of leading all people to enlightenment. When we study the Gosho with this kind of faith and practice, Mr. Toda said, 'We cannot help but feel the flame of faith blaze up still higher in our hearts '[1] That flame creates the light that enables us to change despair into hope and transform karma into mission.

"In his letters, the Daishonin wholeheartedly encouraged his disciples, who were dealing with a wide range of problems and challenges. That's why it's important to apply the Gosho to our own lives as we study. We should regard the Daishonin's writings as personal letters to us, and put his teachings into practise in our lives.

"A certain men's division member in Singapore was involved in a traffic accident that left him paralysed from the waist down. He was also later afflicted with tuberculosis and then suffered bad burns to his leg.As he battled one onslaught of karma after another, he said he gained immense strength from the following Gosho passage: 'The three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat' (WND-1, 637).

"This wise men's division member realised that his difficulties were testing his faith, and today, taking pride in his mission to demonstrate the power of Nichiren Buddhism in his own life, he is positively advancing along the path of creating happiness for oneself and others.

"Those who have engraved the Daishonin's writings in their hearts are strong. They establish a solid pillar in their lives that will not be shaken by any storm. They can see obstacles and devilish functions for what they are and cut through them. They possess the sharp sword of faith that has been polished by diligent, devoted study."
