"What is most important is that, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo

"When the Daishonin was struggling against harsh persecution while in exile on Sado Island, he declared with great confidence in the future:

"'Were they not Bodhisattvas of the Earth, they could not chant the daimoku. At first only Nichiren chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, but then two, three, and a hundred followed, chanting and teaching others. Propagation will unfold this way in the future as well. Does this not signify 'emerging from the earth?' (WND-1, 385)

"May all of you, in your respective local areas, treasure and encourage each person and support their growth. I also hope you will call forth those with whom you share profound karmic ties in this lifetime—members and nonmembers alike—and confidently lead lives dedicated to fulfilling your personal vow.

"We practice this Buddhism for our own sake. The purpose of our faith and practice is to live true to ourselves. It is to increase our good fortune and open the way to happiness. Since this is the case, if we are easily swayed by trifling matters, upbeat one minute and down the next, we cannot say that we are truly practising Nichiren Buddhism.

"In the realm of the Mystic Law, no matter what happens, we can, in time, positively transform all poison into medicine.

"In fact, there is really no clear-cut dividing line between poison and medicine. The same substance can act as either a poison or a medicine, depending on the dosage and the life force of the individual who takes it. Some have even described medicine as 'poison that saves lives.'

"Similarly, there is no clear difference between what will function as poison or medicine when it comes to victory and defeat in life. For instance, if we triumph in the end, everything we experienced can be seen as medicine. On the other hand, if our lives end in defeat, then everything—even that which seemed to function as medicine along the way—becomes poison.

"What do we mean by triumphing in the end? It means being victorious in faith. For this is our true victory as a human being—one that leads to our victory throughout the three existences of past, present, and future."

SGI Newsletter No. 9070, The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, Part 1: Happiness, Chap. 4: Transforming Suffering into Joy—Part 2 [of 3], 4.3 "Changing Poison into Medicine," from the August 2014 issue of the Daibyakurenge, the Soka Gakokai monthly study journal) translation released 25th Aug. 2014.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
This is the faith that enables us to develop
a life condition of supreme value.
If we exert ourselves in the two ways of practice and study,
we are certain to become people
who can appreciate everything in life and
who are never defeated by anything!
Let's therefore, advance along the great and correct path
of our human revolution.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Gongyoreciting portions of the Lotus Sutra and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyois a ceremony in which our lives commune with the universe. It allows us to fully open the storehouse of treasures that resides within us, and tap limitless wisdom, compassion, and courage from the wellspring of our lives.

"Our vibrant gongyo will not fail to bring forth vigorous life force. Nichiren Daishonin writes:

The neighing of the white horses is the sound of our voices chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. When Brahma, Shakra, the gods of the sun and moon, the four heavenly kings, and the others hear this sound, how could they fail to take on a healthy colour and shine with a brilliant light? How could they fail to guard and protect us? We should be firmly convinced of this! (WND-1, 98990)."

SGI Newsletter No. 9064, Opening a New Era of Kosen-rufu Together, (28) Winning Each Day with Vibrant Gongyo, from the Aug. 3rd, 2014 edition of the Seikyo Newspaper, translation released Aug., 12th, 2014.

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The growth and development of young people
is the light for victory in the future.
Let's give all the support and encouragement we can
to our young men and women
who by exerting themselves
in their practice and study of Buddhism
are trying to achieve their very best.

"To have faith is the basis of Buddhism."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"'And this year, on the first day of the seventh month, he [your son Tokuro Moritsuna] came again to Mount Minobu to pay respects at his father's [Abutsu-bo's] grave. Surely, there is no treasure greater than a child, no treasure greater than a child!'
From "The Treasure of a Filial Child" (WND-1, 1045).

"Nichiren Daishonin addressed these words to Sennichi, the widow of Abutsu-bo. He notes that her son Tokuro Moritsuna travelled all the way from the remote island of Sado to visit his father Abutsu-bo's grave at Minobu, as he had also done the previous year [bringing Abutsu-bo's ashes with him to inter them there]. He praises Tokuro Moritsuna for being a wonderful son and also commends Sennichi.

"Conducting ourselves as exemplary sons and daughters is the behaviour of genuine practitioners of the Daishonin's Buddhism. By chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for our parents—and, indeed, all with whom we share a connection—we can pass on to them the benefit of our good causes. The power of the Mystic Law guarantees that, as a result, they, too, will enjoy peace and tranquillity throughout the three existences of past, present, and future."

SGI Newsletter No. 9065, (23) Conducting Ourselves as Exemplary Sons and Daughters, from the 8th August, 2014 edition of the Seikyo Newspaper, translation released 14th August, 2014
