"Why do we experience difficulties even though we are practising Nichiren Buddhism?

"Immediately following the Tatsunokuchi Persecution [in September 1271), the Daishonin wrote a letter explaining the principle of 'lessening karmic retribution.'* Through faith in the Mystic Law, we can make even the most hellish sufferings vanish instantly in this lifetime (cf. WND-1,199). We experience problems and adversities in life so that we can attain Buddhahood, a state of eternally indestructible happiness.

"The Daishonin encourages the three disciples to whom this particular letter was addressed [Ota Saemon-no-jo, the lay priest Soya Kyoshin and Dharma Bridge Kimbara] to advance dauntlessly in complete unity, just like the two brothers who share the same name Chudapanthaka.**.

"In these extremely challenging times of the coronavirus pandemic, our members around the globe are 'transcending all differences among themselves' (WND-1, 217) to encourage one another and illuminate society with a light of hope, courage and friendship."

* Lessening karmic retribution: this term, which literally means, "transforming the heavy and receiving it lightly," appears in the Nirvana sutra. "Heavy" indicates negative karma, accumulated over countless lifetimes in the past. As a benefit of protecting the correct teaching of Buddhism, we can experience relatively light karmic retribution in this lifetime, thereby expiating heavy karma, that ordinarily would adversely affect us not only in this lifetime, but over many lifetimes to come.

** Sons of a Brahman family in Shakyamuni's time, said to have had the same name Chudapanthaka. Therefore, when one was called, both would answer. The Daishonin compares the staunch unity of his three disciples to the two brothers closeness.

"Mr. Makiguchi died just after 6:00 a.m. on November 18th, 1944. By some mystic coincidence, around that same period, Mr. Toda, who was also in prison, experienced a profound awakening to his mission as a Bodhisattva of the Earth and opened a new phase in his life.

"The fighting spirit to stand up alone and take action for kosen-rufu ensures that the vow for kosen-rufu, the baton of the Mystic Law, is passed on.

"'Myo [of myoho, the Mystic Law] means to revive' (WND-1, 149).

"Based on the oneness of mentor and disciple, let us resolve to make the lionhearted spirit demonstrated by our founding president surge forth afresh within us every morning of every day."

"We all battle storms of karma of some kind—be it economic hardship, unemployment, illness, family discord, or other problems. In some cases, our societies may be afflicted by war, natural disasters, or epidemics. The harsh reality of human existence is that our lives are filled with troubles.

"When our organisation began its reconstruction after World War II, many Japanese were leading lives of despair, with no hope for happiness. Our pioneer members of that time rekindled the warm, bright light of human dignity in the frozen hearts of many such desolate individuals and inspired them to bring forth the courage to start anew with pride and confidence.

"And today as well, at this very moment, our members are chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and taking action for the happiness of themselves and others, deeply wishing to encourage and help those who are suffering. While struggling with their own problems, they wholeheartedly encourage and support others, determined to leave no friend behind and to lead victorious lives together. Their spirit is synonymous with the Buddha's vast and infinite compassion, and their behaviour mirrors that of Bodhisattva Never Disparaging, who showed profound respect for everyone he met.

"Inspired by the all-encompassing compassion of Nichiren Daishonin, we are committed to spreading the respectful behaviour of Bodhisattva Never Disparaging and the Bodhisattvas of the Earth throughout our communities and societies and create a monumental groundswell toward the realisation of lasting happiness and peace for all humankind. This is the great significance of our movement for kosen-rufu-rufu."

"Just as the flow of the eternal Ganges began from a single drop of water, our movement grew from dedicated individuals and small groups of people initiating efforts for kosen-rufu in the countries and communities in which they lived. Though tiny, that 'single drop' they each represent is by no means ineffectual or insignificant. It is like 'the single drop of dew that spells the start of the great ocean' (WND-1, 672). In addition, the life of each individual involved in that effort possesses infinite, supremely noble potential. As the Daishonin writes: 'It is like the water of the great ocean, a single drop of which contains water from all the countless streams and rivers' (WND-1, 69).

"Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948), the father of Indian independence, was jailed on numerous occasions during the nonviolent, civil disobedience movement he led to liberate the Indian people from colonial oppression. He was imprisoned for his role in the famous Salt March in 1930—the same year, incidentally, that the Soka Gakkai was founded.

"While in jail, Gandhi wrote to one of his followers about the importance of a vow: 'A vow means unflinching determination. . . . To do at any cost something that one ought to do constitutes a vow. It becomes a bulwark of strength.'*"

"November 18th is the day that Mr. Makiguchi died in prison (in 1944), never surrendering to the oppression of Japan's militarist authorities in his selfless dedication to propagating the Mystic Law.

"Even though he was unjustly arrested and imprisoned, his faith remained unshaken. During his 16-month incarceration, he wrote to his family: 'The hardships we are undergoing now are small and inconsequential compared to those encountered by the Daishonin.'* And in his personal copy of the Daishonin's writings, he had marked the passage from 'The Opening of the Eyes,' 'Here I will make a great vow' (WND-1, 280), with double underlining and written 'Great Vow' in large red characters in the margin.

"Our founding spirit lies in making a vow.

"No matter what the circumstances, Mr. Makiguchi never abandoned the vow he made on founding our organisation—a vow to bring happiness and peace to all humankind. However fiercely the storms of adversity assailed him, he continued to advance bravely and vigorously, driven by the firm conviction that they were 'no more than dust before the wind' (cf. "Hope is a precious treasure for life. Courage is a driving force for victory.

"Nichiren Daishonin teaches us how to powerfully, positively, and wisely draw forth the hope and courage we need to face life's challenges.

"He writes: 'The moon shines more brightly around dawn than it does in the early evening, and is more luminous in autumn and winter than in spring and summer. In a similar fashion, the Lotus Sutra is even more effective in bringing benefit to living beings in the Latter Day of the Law than it is during the two thousand years that make up the Former and Middle Days of the Law' (WND-1, 94).

"The moon shines its brightest at the darkest hour just before the dawn and in the cold, clear skies of autumn and winter. In the same way, the benefits of the Mystic Law shine their brightest in the Latter Day of the Law, when the darkness of human suffering is its deepest, the Daishonin says.

"As the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage throughout the world and uncertainty shrouds the future, the members of our Soka family are chanting tirelessly and encouraging others unstintingly. They are imparting the light of hope and courage to one person after another—to friends, fellow members, and others around them. They are rising to the challenge and carrying out their great mission, wisely putting the principles of Buddhism into practice in society and daily life."

"In "The Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life" and other writings, Nichiren Daishonin indicates that the Bodhisattvas of the Earth can relieve people and the world from suffering by manifesting the fundamental compassion pervading the universe. He says they embody the power of the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo, which he corresponds to the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind and space (heaven).* This could be expanded as follows:

"(1) Just as the element of fire burns and gives light, the Bodhisattvas of the Earth can burn away suffering and pain, changing them into the wisdom to advance towards happiness and illuminating the darkness of the four sufferings of birth, ageing, sickness and death with the light of eternity, happiness, true self and purity.

"(2) Just as the element of water washes away filth, the Bodhisattvas of the Earth can wash away and purify the defilements of karma and the impurities of the age.

"(3) Just as the element of wind blows away dust, the Bodhisattvas of the Earth can sweep away all obstacles and devilish functions and infuse people with fresh energy.

"(4) Just as the element of earth nurtures and supports the growth of trees and grasses, the Bodhisattvas of the Earth can cherish life with a steadfast state of mind. They can build a society of peace, harmonious coexistence, security and safety in which all can flourish in their own unique way in accord with the principle of 'cherry, plum, peach and damson' (cf.OTT, 200).

"(5) Just as heaven provides nourishing moisture to all things, the Bodhisattvas of the Earth can create value that enriches and revitalises the lives of all.

"The Daishonin encourages us on a truly cosmic scale!"

-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
The Daishonin states,
"The lion king fears no other beast"*
Especially in an era of trials and tribulations

it's important that we advance courageously

with heads held high,
and open up a path 

with value creating wisdom.

It's through chanting strong powerful daimoku,

like a roaring lion,

that enables us to win in all challenges.

*Gosho: "Each of you should summon up the courage of a lion king and never succumb to threats from anyone. The lion king fears no other beast, nor do its cubs. Slanderers are like barking foxes, but Nichiren's followers are like roaring lions." (WND-1, page 997)

Let's praise and thank, 

from the very bottom of our hearts, 

all the efforts and great struggles 

that our fellow members 

are making and encountering 

for the sake of kosen-rufu,
let's show them the same 

utmost respect we would a buddha.*
It's through our actions, 

with an open mind and heart, 

that embrace everyone,
that the humanism of the SGI 

shines brilliantly.

*"Therefore, Universal Worthy, if you see a person who accepts and upholds this sutra, you should rise and greet him from afar, showing him the same respect you would a buddha."

"When Nanjo Tokimitsu was gravely ill, the Daishonin, in spite of being ill himself, sternly rebuked the devilish functions plaguing his disciple, saying: 'You demons, by making this man [Tokimitsu] suffer, are you trying to swallow a sword point first, or embrace a raging fire or become the arch enemy of the Buddhas of the ten directions in the three existences?' (WND-1, 1109).

"Given courage by the Daishonin's fierce lions roar, Tokimitsu went on to vanquish the devil of illness and lead a long life dedicated to fulfilling his mission for kosen-rufu.

"Regardless of the difficulties and challenges illness may present, we need to have faith in our potential and live our lives to the fullest to the very end. Living with such strength and resilience is itself actual proof of victory in terms of health."
