"Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Monday, March 31st, 2014
— TO MY FRIENDS --
To those of you who are about to become members of society,
I hope that all of you will make a great start to each morning
by doing a resonant gongyo.
May you all perform confidently and cheerfully
on the stage where you have a unique mission to play
and one that only you can fulfil!

Monday, March 31st, 2014
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"This is similar to a tarnished mirror that will shine like a jewel when polished. A mind now clouded by the illusions of the innate darkness of life is like a tarnished mirror, but when polished, it is sure to become like a clear mirror, reflecting the essential nature of phenomena and the true aspect of reality. "

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 25th March 2014 To My Friend and Daily Gosho plus 26th March 2014 Daily Enc.

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"
published in the Seikyo Shimbun and more.

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Instead of comparing ourselves with others
let's try to progress one step from who we were yesterday!
By working on polishing our own lives
let's build a solid and firmly rooted self!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"(In the Latter Day of the Law, the votary of the Lotus Sutra* will
appear without fail.) The greater the hardships befalling him, the
greater the delight he feels, because of his strong faith. Doesn't a
fire burn more briskly when logs are added? All rivers flow into the
sea, but does the sea turn back their waters?"

* Votary of the Lotus Sutra: One who practices and propagates the
Lotus Sutra in exact accordance with its teachings. Details here:

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In one of his letters, Nichiren Daishonin warmly encourages and praises the lay nun Toki (the wife of Toki Jonin), who devotedly nursed her ailing mother-in-law, who was in her 90s, until the latter passed away peacefully. The lay nun Toki also faced her own health problems, which had perhaps been caused in part by exhaustion from caring for her mother-in-law. Nevertheless, she refused to be defeated by illness. Encouraging her, the Daishonin writes: 'There is nothing to lament when we consider that we will surely become Buddhas' (WND-1, 657).

"There is no reason to lament and ask yourself why, after so many years of sincere and diligent practice of the Daishonin's Buddhism, you should have to fall ill, or a family member should require nursing care, or some other such situation. Your practice has enabled you to lessen your karmic retribution and makes it possible for you to change poison into medicine. When families practicing the Daishonin's Buddhism pull together to overcome such obstacles based on faith, they will be able to open the way to the attainment of Buddhahood on a truly profound and meaningful level."

A translation of President Ikeda's "To My Friends"

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
As "leaders,"
let's all continue to make every effort to
study the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin
and SGI's guidance each and every day!
Our own growth is the very driving force
for the development of our organisation.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"There is no true happiness for human beings other than chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. The sutra reads, ". . . where living beings enjoy themselves at ease." How could this passage mean anything but the boundless joy of the Law? ."

(Happiness in This World - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, WND-I, page 681)
Selection source: "Kyo no Hosshin", Seikyo Shimbun, March 22nd, 2014

Sunday, March 23rd, 2014
—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ——
"The spirit of sharing Buddhism is the spirit of compassion to teach one's friends and all whom one encounters the way to triumph over suffering and to gain indestructible happiness. It is the courage to uphold the correct teaching of Buddhism, without fearing anything. It is also the strong desire to polish and develop one's life, the motivation to better oneself with the aspiration of doing one's human revolution and attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime.

"Soka Gakkai activities take many forms, from spreading the Daishonin's teachings to holding discussion meetings, engaging in Buddhist study, and promoting publication subscriptions. But the aim of all these activities is kosen-rufu, and the driving force behind them is the spirit of sharing Buddhism with others. If that basic spirit is lost, activities become perfunctory and meaningless.

"When we share Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism with those around us, pulsing with the desire that they definitely become happy, all of our activities will be infused with this spirit and joy will surge up within us. When this happens, our interactions with others will naturally connect their lives to Buddhism.

"All Gakkai activities are directed toward advancing kosen-rufu and establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land. That is our bodhisattva practice as emissaries of the Buddha. It is important that we are filled with the wish to share Buddhism with others, which is the spirit of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth."

"Our lives always begin from this point onwards. Those who keep advancing with the determination that 'Now is the decisive moment!' will succeed in reaching their goal. Let's play out a triumphant drama in which we can joyously proclaim in the end that we have won.

"Even when things may not always go smoothly and obstacles may stand in our way, all we need to do is chant about everything to the Gohonzon. It's important not to become discouraged, but to continue praying with strong resolve.

"Shin'ichi began by referring to the annual fire festival on Mount Wakakusa in Nara Prefecture, which had been held on January 15: 'The mountain is set ablaze once a year, but every spring new grass sprouts again without fail. Though the dead grass burns, the roots of the grass remain, and fresh new grass grows after absorbing the nourishment from the burned grass ash of the previous year.

"The same is true in life. People with deep roots will always flourish, no matter what happens. These roots represent faith. By making your roots as thick and strong as possible, you will be able to absorb good fortune and cause not only yourselves but your families and all your relatives to prosper forever.'"

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
It's the season of fresh departures.*
Let's make sure that we express our heartfelt appreciation
to all those people who have supported us up until now,
starting with our parents!
Let's always walk the path of gratitude,
never forgetting to return the kindness we have received from others!

* Many young people in Japan are graduating from school or college at this time of
the year, and moving on to a new phase in their lives. Similarly, working
people are moving into new positions as of April 1st.

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Become the master of your mind rather than let your mind master you."

(Letter to the Brothers - The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, page 502)

—— DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"In a letter to one of his followers, Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The Buddha dwells within our hearts…. We ordinary people can see neither our own eyelashes, which are so close, nor the heavens in the distance. Likewise, we do not see that the Buddha exists in our own hearts' (WND-1, 1137).

"As practitioners of the Mystic Law, all of you are experts in the art of happiness who have the power to make the life-state of Buddhahood shine brightly within you.

"We may lead extremely busy lives and at times encounter difficult and painful challenges. The Mystic Law, however, enables us to transform earthly desires into enlightenment and change poison into medicine. We can transform all delusions, sufferings, and trials into great good fortune and benefit. We practise the Daishonin's Buddhism, so that not only we, but all with whom we share a connection, can lead victorious lives radiant with happiness.

"Second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda said: 'The Daishonin's Buddhism is a teaching of supreme reason. We exert ourselves in faith so that we can shine with great vitality and savour genuine happiness in life. There is not the slightest doubt that each of us will ultimately be able to bring our unique potential to blossom in the best possible way.'

"A fresh story of victory from March 16th begins with reaching out to one person after another in joyful dialogue, our voices ringing with hope and confidence, and expanding our network of happiness and peace harmoniously, with wisdom and optimism."
