[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 30th Nov. 2017 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 1st Dec. Daily Encouragement

A translation of "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

Thursday, November 30th, 2017
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin teaches us,
"You should understand that when
one practises the Lotus Sutra under
such circumstances, difficulties will arise,
and these are to be looked on as 'peaceful'
practices."*
When we face hardships or difficulties,
that is actually the greatest opportunity
for us to grow and develop.
By chanting daimoku with courage and vigour,
let's unfold a boundless rich life state
within our lives!

*"Concerning the 'peaceful' practices of the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law and the practices carried out by Nichiren and his followers now in the Latter Day of the Law, you should understand that, when one practises the Lotus Sutra under such circumstances, difficulties will arise, and these are to be looked on as 'peaceful' practices."

"Though I may be a person of little ability, I have reverently given myself to the study of the Mahayana. A blue fly, if it clings to the tail of a thoroughbred horse, can travel ten thousand miles, and the green ivy that twines around the tall pine can grow to a thousand feet."

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The eminent social anthropologist Nur Yalman noted that the growth of the SGI marked a new age of dialogue in which religions actively reach out to one another, an age of peace. He said he saw this as the SGI's most important contribution.

"Our members around the world are courageously working with me to talk with people from all areas and walks of life, and also pursuing interfaith and intercultural dialogue. The dialogues we undertake in the place we are now will strongly promote human revolution for both ourselves and others and act as a driving force for transforming the world.

"The dialogues that we of the Soka Gakkai are carrying out on a daily basis around the globe are creating a gentle, deep-flowing, yet sure, current of change toward the realisation of a peaceful world."

SGI Newsletter No. 9710, The Buddhism of the Sun—Illuminating the World, [22] A Religion of Human Revolution—Part 2, "A Friend in the Orchid Room"—Dialogue Is the Heart of the SGI, from the February 2017 issue of the Daibyaku-renge, translation released 20th Sep. 2017

Beware of the common cold and influenza viruses.
Be sure to always take preventative measures
by gargling and washing your hands regularly,
using masks* and humidifiers, etc.
to prevent from catching and spreading (such illnesses.)
Take good care of your health, first and foremost,
and advance in the very best of good cheer!

* It's the norm in Japan, and we hear in some other countries, too, to wear a mask especially when you have a cold or other illness that might be contagious.

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 27th Nov - 3rd Dec 2017 Words of the Week, 27th Nov Daily Gosho + 28th Nov Daily Encouragement

A translation of "Words of the Week" published in the Seikyo Shimbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

November 27th-December 3rd, 2017
-- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
"No prayer will go unanswered and
no good fortune will be unbestowed."*
Through having a strong powerful faith
and practice,
let's bring forth the boundless power
of the Buddha and the Law!**
Let's help our friends,
one after another,
to join our solidarity of happiness!

*"If you have faith in this Gohonzon and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo even for a short while, no prayer will go unanswered, no offence unexpiated, no good fortune unbestowed, and all righteousness proven."
(Commentary on "The True Object of Worship" by Nichikan Shonin)

**The power of the Buddha, the power of the Law, the power of faith, and the power of practice. In Nichiren's teachings, the four powers are known as the four powers of the Mystic Law, whose interaction enables one to have one's prayers answered and attain Buddhahood. The power of the Buddha is the Buddha's compassion in saving all people. The power of the Law indicates the boundless capacity of the Mystic Law to lead all people to enlightenment. The power of faith is to believe in the Gohonzon, the object of devotion that embodies the power of the Buddha and the power of the Law, and the power of practice is to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo oneself and teach others to do the same. To the extent that one brings forth one's powers of faith and practice, one can manifest the powers of the Buddha and the Law within one's own life.

Monday, November 27th, 2017
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"Whether you chant the Buddha's name, recite the sutra, or merely offer flowers and incense, all your virtuous acts will implant benefits and roots of goodness in your life. With this conviction you should strive in faith."

(On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime
- WND, Vol. 1, page 4)
Selection Source: "Kyo no Hosshin,"
Seikyo Shinbun, Nov. 27th, 2017

Tuesday, November 28th, 2017
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, clearly states: 'The best way to attain Buddhahood is to encounter a good friend…. [W]e should seek out a good friend. But encountering a good friend is the hardest possible thing to do' (WND-1, 598).

"A good friend is indispensable to attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime, but also extremely rare and precious. Soka Gakkai discussion meetings are gatherings filled with such good friends.

"In our world today, which is like a mire rife with negative influences, discussion meetings are places of mutual encouragement where we can help one another lead happy lives and shine our brightest as 'human flowers' (LSOC5, 142). They are noble assemblies pervaded by the Buddha virtues of eternity, joy, true self, and purity."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 26.11.2017 To My Friends and Daily Gosho + 27.11. Daily Encouragement

A translation of "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

Sunday, November 26th, 2017
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
The Daishonin encourages us to
"Diligently polish your mirror day and night."*
Each and every day is a challenge
of win or lose.
By persistently trying to chant daimoku,
let's continue to develop those
"treasures of the heart" in our lives!

"Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo."
- "On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime", WND-I, page 4

Sunday, November 26th, 2017
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"What is most important is that, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo alone, you can attain Buddhahood. It will no doubt depend on the strength of your faith. To have faith is the basis of Buddhism."

(The Real Aspect of the Gohonzon
- WND, Vol. 1, page 832)

Seikyo Shinbun, November 26th, 2017

Monday, November 27th, 2017
---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"The Daishonin clearly states: 'Nor will I ever reproach [those who persecuted me].' As he points out in another writing where he says, '[this present exile] is not because of any secular crime' (WND-1, 303), he had committed no wrong. All the persecutions and attacks directed at him were unfounded, and it might have been perfectly natural for him to be angry and resentful.

"But he was not. This is because, as taught in the Lotus Sutra, the persecutions he faced were precisely due to his propagation of the correct teaching. They were therefore a source of joy, not resentment."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Bodhisattvas of the Earth
with their indomitable spirit,
continue to the very end
to help others while challenging to overcome
their own personal sufferings.
Their noble lives that they live out
by fulfilling their vow are adorned
with the brilliant light of happiness!

*"Our original essence is pure and undefiled, but we willingly take on negative karma, choosing to be born in difficult circumstances or with various physical or psychological challenges in order to give hope to others by triumphing over these difficulties. By showing proof of the inherent power of our humanity to overcome suffering, we open the way for others to do the same. Likewise, we are able to give real support to people who suffer from similar difficulties. In each new life, we again awaken to our original vow and joyfully embrace whatever challenges it presents us."

[SGI-ToMyFriends-Wagatomo] 24.11.2017 To My Friends & Daily Gosho + 25.11. Daily Encouragement

A translation of "To My Friends" published in the Seikyo Shinbun based on President Ikeda's recent guidance, and more.

Friday, November 24th, 2017
-- TO MY FRIENDS --
Let's help to raise our new
and "younger" members
so that they become
even more capable than we are!
It's from a "leaders'" full on earnest
efforts to encourage others that
our joyful solidarity spreads.

Friday, November 24th, 2017
--- DAILY GOSHO ---
A person of wisdom is one who, understanding the time, spreads the teachings of the lotus sutra accordingly; this is their most important task. If a person's throat is dry, what they need is water; they have no use for bows and arrows, weapons and sticks. If a person is naked, they want a suit of clothes but has no need for water. From one or two examples you can guess the principle that applies in general.

"I stopped by the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum and viewed the exhibition 'A Monumental Journey to the Far Side of the World: The Art of Renaissance Italy and the Boys of Tensho-Era Japan.'

"One of the pieces on display is a plate depicting the Roman general Julius Caesar liberating the people. Caesar once said before a difficult battle: 'The disadvantage [we face] . . . could be remedied by speed alone.'[1]

"The Soka Gakkai's strength lies in its speed. No matter what the obstacles, the champions of Soka achieve resounding victories, defying all odds, through their swift and courageous action."

-- TO MY FRIENDS --
There are various different paths
on the journey of life.
Instead of comparing ourselves with others
and worrying about what they are doing,
let's take one step forwards on our own.
In our own unique way, at our own unique pace
let's carry out our important missions in life!

--- DAILY GOSHO ---
"In this chapter Shakyamuni Buddha revealed the foremost point he wished to convey to us. The Buddha preached the Lotus Sutra over a period of eight years, and eight characters sum up the message that he has left behind for living beings in this later age, the Latter Day of the Law. It is in the passage that reads, 'Therefore, Universal Worthy, if you see a person who accepts and upholds this sutra, you should rise and greet him from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha.'"

"Justice will perish if people fail to be angered by evil. Similarly, only a hypocritical kind of justice conducive to the perpetuation of evil will exist if people stop struggling actively against injustice and iniquity."
