"'A waterfall called the Dragon Gate exists in China. Its waters plunge a hundred feet, swifter than an arrow shot by a strong warrior. It is said that a great many carp gather in the basin below, hoping to climb the falls and that any that succeeds will turn into a dragon.'

"Nichiren Daishonin shares the ancient Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate waterfall with his young disciple Nanjo Tokimitsu, who was battling against adversity.

"According to the parable, a carp that succeeds in climbing the surging waterfall will become a dragon. It illustrates the hope-filled principle of human revolution. Hardships and difficulties all serve as a springboard for personal growth. Taking on challenges is itself a victory. Through earnestly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can triumphantly open the way to a brilliant future without fail.

We each have this faith and practice!
Meaning, no matter what may happen
we will never face deadlock.
By turning poison into medicine*
through this practice,
we can turn the cold trials of winter
into a spring of happiness!

(*) The Buddhist principle that earthly desires and suffering can be transformed into benefit and enlightenment by virtue of the power of the Law.

"Gold can be neither burned by fire no corroded or swept away by water, but iron is vulnerable to both. A worthy person is like gold, a fool like iron. You are like pure gold because you embrace the 'gold' of the Lotus Sutra."

"Each of you, our hard-working and dedicated members, who have triumphed over countless trials and adversities on the road to kosen-rufu, are 'worthy people' who are like 'pure gold.' Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha over the Latter Day of the Law, is certain to praise and applaud your efforts.

"The good fortune we accumulate through striving in our mission for kosen-rufu is truly immeasurable. The life state of Buddhahood we forge during this life time is indestructible and will shine eternally with golden brilliance.

"Let us move forwards together with a spirit of unwavering faith transcending life and death. I am chanting daimoku for the happiness of all of you, my infinitely precious fellow members everywhere."

"[This passage is addressed to Abutsu-bo and his wife, the lay nun Sennichi, who lived on Sado Island.] Each of us who bases our lives on the Mystic Law is the treasure tower, and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo will transform where we are into the 'dwelling place of the treasure tower.'

"The precious members of our organisation's various local groups—such as the Community, Housing Complex, Farming and Fishing and Outlying Islands divisions—are sincerely expanding friendship and trust based on their vow to make their beloved communities into realms of happiness. -- WORDS OF THE WEEK --
We have
"daimoku like the roar of a lion" to chant,
the "strategy of the Lotus Sutra" to employ
and the "perfect unity" to encourage each other.
So as we head into our traditional month of February,
where we "break down walls,"
let's all dynamically challenge ourselves
to break through our obstacles and limitations!

"If we inquire into the origin of Mount Sumeru, we find that it began with a single speck of dust; and likewise, the great ocean began with a single drop of dew. One added to one becomes two, two becomes three, and so on to make ten, a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand, or an asamkhya. Yet "one" is the mother of all."

"'When ordinary people in the latter age hear this doctrine [of the Lotus Sutra], not only will they themselves attain Buddhahood, but also their fathers and mothers will attain Buddhahood in their present forms. This is the highest expression of filial devotion.'

"The attainment of Buddhahood by a single individual leads to the attainment of Buddhahood by their parents and family members. The true purpose of our practice of Nichiren Buddhism is to show our appreciation to our parents and gratitude for others' kindness.

"When the sun of the Mystic Law rises in your hearts, you can illuminate everyone around you. Therefore, there is no need to argue with your family members about faith. Just chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for their happiness and treat them respectfully.

"With the light of warm compassion and wisdom, please create families where joyous laughter abounds. A harmonious family is a microcosm of peace and a nurturing ground for a hopeful future."

"The grand, magnificent treasure tower that emerges from the earth in the Lotus Sutra actually exemplifies the life of every living being, of each individual person. Every person, regardless of race, ethnicity, personal origin or profession, is an infinitely dignified treasure tower, a 'complete entity' of the Mystic Law.
