"Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), the 140th anniversary of whose birth was celebrated on October 2nd, declared: 'All the 24 hours of the day I am with [the people]. They are my first care and last.' Genuine leaders are always in earnest, never growing arrogant or negligent. Their sole concern is how they can encourage and support others, how they can energise them and help them make their way to victory. They give their all to this noble responsibility.
"The 'Life Span' (16th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra closes with the lines: 'At all times I think to myself: / How can I cause living beings / to gain entry into the unsurpassed way / and quickly acquire the body of a Buddha?' (LS16, 232). The true measure of a person's greatness is the guiding thought that occupies their mind. Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'From the time that I was born until today, I have never known a moment's ease; I have thought only of propagating the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo]' (WND-1, 965). As heirs to this great spirit, the first three presidents of the Soka Gakkai have 'at all times thought to themselves' about how to propagate the Daishonin's Buddhism in the modern age. This is how in the 80 years since its founding the Soka Gakkai has grown into the international organisation it is today.
